it occurred to me years ago, as self checkout aisles just started to proliferate, that something like this could happen.

i finally heard it in person yesterday at the local superfresh.

the guy ahead of me bought some a bag of nuts, 'loose' as it were--the kind that you bag yourself and need to be weighed.

he placed the bag on the scale/scanner.

a second later, the self checkout machine voice said, "please remove your nuts from the scanner."

I realized that this lady in a yellow dress was probably a big deal when my dad refused to let me watch my regularly scheduled programming and forced me to watch the news instead. Witnessing the collective shock and subsequent joy in the house was worth missing an episode of MacGyver.  I think for once, my parents were homesick.

Next time I'm in NJ, remind me to rummage through the basement to find the half-dozen 120-minute vhs cassettes chock full of People Power coverage.
