Hey everyone, As some of you may know I am in my final project at Full Sail, this means I have 5 months to make a game with 4 other guys. So we have a pretty cool idea and we are 2 months into production and just got a very basic demo up. So here is what this email is all about. We need testers. So what will a tester do: every few weeks we will send out an email with a link to the newest version of our game, in the email we will say specifically what we want people to test for. Then you just play the game and email us back answering the questions. Super easy, Super fun, and super helpful to us. If you want to go ahead and check out the newest version that we have go to smashbricks.blogspot.com and click on the newest release in the top right corner. If you are interested just email me back (include your name and email) and I will put you on the list. Thanks guys, Grant Shonkwiler Project Lead White Board Logic smashbricks.blogspot.com PS This is a very early version so it doesn’t look or sound pretty we know

So today starts Final Project. Just five months till I finish with a great game (hopefully) and graduate from Full Sail. So today we got our groups. My group is already presented with an interesting challenge because we are the only team that only has 5 team members (all the others have 6) but we are already rising to the challenge. The jobs so far (not 100% set in stone) Me Project Lead, Naveen Nattam Technology Lead, Scott Rodda Interface Lead, Franklin Ludgood Gameplay Lead, CP Wilkinson Asset Lead. We have some great initial ideas and have already started researching to see how they will work. All in all I am really excited for the next five months they will be hard but fun I am sure. Well that is all 10 days to GDC I am really excited. Also my website is now almost completly finished. I have put up more projects, some design docs, and my resume both on the page and for download. Check them out and let me know what you think. grantshonkwiler.com PS I am one film away from making my top films of 2007. Should be up this weekend.

So I realize that more people read this blog then my other one so I will keep posting everything here also. (But if you are bored check out gshonk.wordpress.com). Here is my two most recent posts from there. So I realize I am getting really bad at this blog writing thing so I'm just writing this to let you know that I am still alive and my plans for this blog and a future website. Currently I am in my last month of Full Sail before the five months of final project so I am extremely busy with school. Also I am getting ready for my first GDC which I am extremely excited about. I will be writing about GDC and my experiences there. Now for the blog I have a few things that I want to write in the next few months first I am going to do my top lists of 2007 including, Movies, Music and games. But right now I am very behind in the movie and game department so it will take me a few weeks to catch up. Also I will be posting a resume soon and hopefully I will have a website up and running in the next few months. Until the next time. Go download my friend and classmate Naveen Nattam's game Blobula its awesome. This is his game for a competition we had here at school. http://nattam.blogspot.com/ Enjoy. And I will be writing more soon

So I really just wanted to post some of the stuff I have been saying on my other blog. I use it mostly for school/work related stuff and will continue to use this one for more personal posts. So here is what I have been saying over there. Here is the other address gshonk.wordpress.com.Posted a few days ago For those of you who don't know I recently wrote an article for Game Career Guide www.gamecareerguide.com/features/439/student_testimonial_full_sail_.php it out I'm pretty excited about it. Also I believe I have fixed the installer for my game if someone would download it and let me know if it is or isn't working that would be awesome(email me at gshonk@fullsail.edu). Posted Today Here are some pictures of my openGL project from last month. This was an awesome class taught by Richard Wright the author of The OpenGL Super Bible. Along with this class we also had MAR1 a assembly programming class. Everything in the scene was completely hand modeled and crafted. Including most of the textures. The front of the level. The Diner inside of a small skybox filled with white fog to set the mood. The windows and door are transparent with textures applied. A closer look at the front door with the awesome menu banners. A view of the bar. Things to notice. Bar stools, Foot rest, Pie holder with spinning pies. Singing in the rain poster Here is where i spent most of my time to get the look of a booth I needed to hand model a curved surface I ended up using a thing in openGL called NURBS ( Non Uniform Rational Basis, or Bézier Spline). This took me a good two days of research and work to figure out how to use. After getting the look I wanted I asked my teacher if there was an easier way he said no but he was in shock that I figured out how to use NURBS. Apparently no one really uses them Hand modeled table and chairs. Another shot of the bar. And back room. Another angle of the whole scene. Closer shot of the pies. Also today was the Rugby World Cup Final. Congrats to South Africa on a good win. It was a great world cup. Can't wait for 2011.

So after that long rant about gaming here is my more of what I am up to since that game was over. Not much really. Except me, Matt, and Micah went to Key West for a few days (I have the sunburn to prove it). It was about an 7hr drive which ended up being cool because I got to see almost all of Florida ( CURSE YOU TOLL ROADS I'm poor now). Funny thing is once you get past Miami and start to enter the keys there is only one road and it is mostly two lanes so Thousands of people have to use this road and it is packed. We got stuck in the middle of the Everglades in traffic but that was ok because it was cool just to look around at that swamp its pretty awesome. It reminds me a lot of the Burren in Ireland but with swamp instead of rock. So we finally got to Key West ( we drove through the Ramrod Key HAHAHA) and got to our hotel decided to go drive around and see the island. Yea so there are NO good beaches on that stupid island who would have guessed there would only be 2 beaches on an ISLAND and one was all homeless people. So we just drove around and began to realize that Key West is for older people then two 19 year olds and a 20 year old. (It is pretty much just all bars). So we went back to our hotel and went to the pool and met these awesome British chicks and their crazy Irish protector. So we hung out with them till the pool closed then we went and walked around the town some more. I saw some interesting things (I'll leave it at that). Then we went back and crashed woke up the next day and just hung around the pool with the Brits then went out for a super nice dinner (yes family I spent $22 on a meal), giant cookies and Cigars. We ended up just hanging in the cigar shop and talking to the owner a super nice old guy who wanted to teach us everything about cigars ( I think I kind of impressed him with how much I knew) I learned a lot. So we went and sat on the beach and watched a thunderstorm roll in. I have to say sitting there smoking a nice cigar looking at the stars super clear and the lightening rolling in was one of the best experiences I have had in a while. So we talked to the Brits and we were gonna go to Miami with them but Micah and Matt decided they didn't want to (party poopers). So we headed back and decided while going through Miami we would stop at the Marlins Phillies baseball game. It was more like the homerun derby, event the pitcher of the Phillies hit a homer. It was sad though there were only like 5,000 people at the game, granted it was the hottest baseball game I have ever been too. It was also a really long 9 inning game it took about 3:30 hrs. So we left that and got to drive through a nice big thunder storm WOO. Now we are all back safe for two days nursing our wounds I have been working my way through the AFI top 100 films (over half way now) and catching up on some reading. New classes start tomorrow (crappy schedule 5pm-1am Tuesday- Saturday) but I am still really excited. Welp off to bed. Laters All Grant RUGBY WORLD CUP IN 2 DAYS.
I love these guys.

Alrighty then so I didn't post a blog every week like I said I would. I didn't even make it for once a milestone. My bad but other things are much more important like making a great game. Or at least I think it is a great game because I love playing it. It has been an extremely long and hard two months working on this game. I loved and hated every minute of it. I have finally realized how much I love making games, programming, and working with/leading a team. Ok lets take it back to where I left off (I am not going to post all of the milestone scores because I don't remember them all) we worked for two weeks on our engines and tools, this was a completely new experience for all of us since we had never made tools before. I ended up spending a lot of extra time tweaking my editor and engine (for the 2d animations) since Kisor would be using it as much (ended up being more) as me. We ran into some problems with communication and integration during that first month but it was all smoothed out. During the second month I began working on the AI for the enemies in the game and all of the game sounds. It turns out that we had two of Kisors friends want to make our sounds and soundtrack for us so that was super awesome. The AI was a lot of fun to work on and an interesting experience. And the sounds were just super fun. That was our alpha milestone. Next was our Beta milestone. I had to write up a tutorial level (which meant that we needed to design a level as a team) and make mini games and do anything else that needed done (that ended up being my job a lot in fact the whole group worked on each others stuff all through out the month this helped in the long run). The tutorial level was a snap and the mini games were just funny I designed them all off of things in day to day life (sorta) 1. is a baby kicking(more like bouncing game) in which you must keep the baby in the air for so long (this was my producers idea) 2. Was based off the song "99 red balloons" you shoot down red balloons. 3. Was a male bathroom etiquette game (more like a quiz on how to act in the restroom). After that was just bug testing and polish. So another team took our game (now with 4 levels 3 mini games and a boss [I did the AI for that one too]) and played it till they broke it then wrote down all the problems. Meanwhile we did the same for another team. This was pretty fun because we got to play another game and just break it. We were lucky that most of the bugs in our game were easy to fix. Then we had presentations which was awesome except I talked to long because I got really excited. And that's about it. I learned a ton this month mostly how to work with others and bring an idea to fruition. I tried to keep it short and simple. I've been playing System Shock 2 to recover. How did I miss that game o so many years ago. Grant PS The game should be up on UdderPunch.com some time soon. PPS Check next blog for more personal.
