The final two tracks from the Kinks' set at the Rainbow in '72.  Waterloo Sunset is arguably Ray's finest moment as a songwriter and record producer and Village Green Preservation Society is the title track to arguably the band's greatest album.

As promised, here's the next set of videos culled from the Kinks' Rainbow Theater gig in London in 1972. A blistering set shot for BBC-TV and broadcast in '73.

These are the first two songs from an outstanding ... albeit much too brief ... Rainbow Theater (London) gig shot for the BBC.  Filmed in January 1972 and broadcast the following year, here's the Kinks augmented by a New Orleans-style horn section.  For those of you who've become addicted to these Kinkian missives, rest assured that I'll post the remaining segments by hoot night.

Very cool, quasi-biography of The Kinks in the context of 1966. Ray discusses Pete Quaife's brief departure from the band, England's World Cup victory, The Beatles' best album, Revolver, and his own Dead End Street.

Here's the promo video for Dead End Street in all its campy, Dickensian glory. Great social commentary from Ray about England's working classes:

"What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor
No chance to emigrate
I'm deep in debt and now it's much too late."

I don't know if this was commissioned by Wes Anderson or made by some clove-smoking Royal Tennenbaums obsessive, but this is a pretty good video featuring Strangers, one of my favorite Kinks songs and probably Dave Davies' high water mark as a songwriter.

Let us return to the Book of Davies for a holy trinity of Kinks badassery, beginning with Get Back In Line. One of Lola vs The Powerman's best songs, this is a mostly solo rendition from Christmas 1977.  Dave's harmonies have always been a linchpin of the band's sound and this one is no exception.  And you gotta love the fact Dave stopped cleaning his musket just long enough to sing backup.

Muswell Hillbillies is one of my favorite songs in the Kinks canon and this is a great, rootsy version done for the German TV show, Beat Club, on May 27, 1972.

The Kinks perform Destroyer during the 1983 State of Confusion tour and illustrate that they were probably the only mid-'60s band to positively influence mid '70s punk AND who demonstrated a reciprocal influence. Kickass.

Ray was one of the first musical guests to appear on Conan O'Brien after 9/11/01, performing the Kinks classic, Days. A short time later he was interviewed by The Onion's A/V Club, and when discussing the songwriting process ... the songcatching process, specifically ... he talked about the Conan performance.

"I did a thing on Conan O'Brien last night called Days. They picked the song, because I guess they liked the sentiment. Really, at the present time you're analyzing every lyric in songs. I remember I was doing this song Thursday night in Boston, and I thought, 'God, I can't sing this at this time.' It is a tricky time for that. But I guess I was fated to write it. I think I'm kind of one of these people. All the ideas are out there, and it just depends on who grabs them, you know?"

Cool feature on the Kinks that looks to be from the late '90s/early '00s and is probably British in origin.  The greater emphasis on Dave's contributions is refreshing, as are the interviews with him and Pete Quaife.  It would've been nice to hear from Mick Avory, one of my favorite drummers, but his rumored addiction to midget porn made filming difficult.  Anyway, this clip seems like it's part of a larger documentary, so I'll try to find more.
