Jagermeister is considered to be a family name as well with some moder
variants being Die Jaeger and incorrectly spelled Yaeger. Recipe and Taste
The official Jagermeister recipe is highly confidential, however has
been stated to be a blend of a total of 56 different herbs. Anise is an
important part of the liqueurs flavor, however it isn't as prominent in
the Jagermeister blends as in what are considered the true anise
flavored liqueurs. Jagermeister is a digestif spirit closely in line
with similar Central European stomach bitters, including but not
limited to the Hungarian Unicum, the Denmark Gammel Dansk or Czech
Becherovka. Different than many other drinks, Jagermeister has a
somewhat sweeter flavor. Jagermeister is best served on tap at
Jägermeister's recipe is kept secret but is speculated to be a
blend of 56 herbs. Although anise is a major component of its flavor,
it is not as dominant in Jägermeister as in true anise-flavored
liqueurs. It is a digestif spirit similar to other Central European
stomach bitters, such as Gammel Dansk from Denmark, the Hungarian
Unicum, or Czech Becherovka. In contrast to many such drinks,
Jägermeister has a sweet flavor. On tap, the drink is ideally served
at 4°F (-15.5°C).
Insider Germany, when a liqueur is called bitter, that means the
liqueur is actually bitter. Jagermeister, however has a sweet flavor
and is referred to as Krauterlikor or literally liqueur of herbs.
Throughout Germany, there are numerous brands of Krauterlikor, however
most of these liqueurs are not exported. The market leader in Germany
is Jagermeister.
History
Jagermeister in German literally means "master hunter". This is
derived from combing hunter or Jager with master or Meister. The famous
Jagermeister logo is the prominent head head of a stag with a a radiant
cross between the stag's antlers. The story is referenced from Saint
Hubert. On the end of the Jagermeister label is a poem by Otto von
Riesenthal published in 1848 which reads as follows:
Das ist des Jägers Ehrenschild,
daß er beschützt und hegt sein Wild,
weidmännisch jagt, wie sich's gehört,
den Schöpfer im Geschöpfe ehrt.
This Poem translated In English is as follows:
This is the hunter's badge of honour,
that he protect and nourish his game,
hunt sportingly, as is proper,
and honour the Creator in the creature.
Preserving the rhyme and meter, the poem is translated as:
This is the hunter's badge of glory:
That he protects and tends his quarry,
Hunts with honour, as is due,
And through the beast to God is true.
Founded
The Jagermeister was first founded by Wilhelm Mast in 1878. The
herbal liquor formula however was developed in 1934. The product was
first introduced throughout the German marketplace in 1935.
Interestingly, the original purpose was as a medicine to cure digestive
problems and incessant coughing. Throughout Germany, Jagermeister is
still considered to be a digestif and many German households retain it
for purposes and refer to it as "liver-glue" or Leberkleber.
In the year 1970, Jagermeister was first exported to the United
States along with 60 other countries. The liqueur became very popular
by the innovative efforts of Sidney Frank. Today, the liqueur is
extremely popular as an alcoholic shot. Jagermeister is served very
cold as a shooter in many American bars today.
Jagermeister in Sponsorship and Pop Culture
Since the 1970's, the brand of Jagermeister has been associated with
motor racing. Jagermeister has sponsored numerous European racing
teams, especially with those fielded by Porsches and BMWs.
Additionally, Jagermeister has been involved with Formula ONe, DRM,
Kremeer, Moritz, Zakspeed and Brun Motorsport. It's orange logo is
highly recognized in motorsport livery. Jagermeister also sponsors the
domestic table tennis team TTC Jagermeister Calw.
Jagermeister is also closely associated with the Bundesliga of the
German football league. The Eintracht Braunschweig was the firt sport
sponsor of the Jagermeister and renamed their team Eintracht
Jagermeister. Throughout Germany, now Jagermeister is advertised on
various stadiums.
Sidney Frank made the Jagermeister brand incredibly popular
throughout the United States by associating it with the wild partying
of heavy metal bands Slayer, Metallica and Pantera. He then took the
band underground to sponsor tours and rock bands such as Hanzel und
Gretyl, Orange Goblin, Hemlock, Bloodhound Gang, Dog Fashion Disco,
Corrupt Absolute, My Ruin and SikTh. The company also sponsors the
Jagermeister Music tour which is held biannually. The Jagermeister
brand is frequently referred by numerous artists and bands in their
songs.

Information for Jagerette/Jager Dude Program All State Promotions, Inc. is a promotional agency that employs part-time spokespeople who primarily represent Jagermeister on an exclusive basis in the United States.
All State promotional people, referred to as Jagerettes and Jager Dudes, create awareness of Jagermeister through personal appearances, usually in teams of two at bars, pubs, restaurants and special events, such as concerts, trade shows, and conventions. During these appearances they educate consumers about Jagermeister.
Among their topics:
- The origin of the product.
- The legends associated with Jagermeister.
- The herbs, roots and spices in Jagermeister.
- The many ways to mix Jagermeister and the correct way to serve it.
- Jagermeister's National and International popularity.
The Jagerettes/Jager Dudes educate through conversation with consumers and wait staff. In markets were permissible they promote through the use of product related games such as "Jager Trivia" and raffles. The Jagerettes/Jager Dudes also decorate the establishment using various promotional items (where permissible). Jagerettes/Jager Dudes are not allowed to provide services to the establishment, i.e. they do not serve alcohol during promotions and they do not handle money.  Jägermeister Herbal Liqueur is imported from Germany by Sidney Frank Importing Co., Inc. For years, Jägermeister has been the 1 shot choice of millions. The marketing and advertising of Jägermeister has always been untraditional. Rather than pure print, radio, or billboard advertising, Jägermeister goes right to the consumer at the bar. Jägermeister reaches out to its fans through parties, spokesmodels, tap machines, and now, music.
The pairing of Jägermeister with music is only natural. Since 1994, Jägermeister has added music to its act by sponsoring bands. From local acts to national acts, Jägermeister bands help spread the word about Jägermeister. We are proud of our bands, many of whom we have watched grow and graduate from their mothers' basements to local bars and national arenas.
How does Jägermeister sponsor a band? Well, once we decide we dig their scene, we supply them with giveaway items where legal. Items are branded with the Jägermeister logo and the name of the band. From posters to guitar picks, t-shirts to hats, we cover our bands. In return, we simply ask for a little love? mentioning Jägermeister between and during sets, imbibing a shot on stage, hanging a few banners, or wearing a t-shirt.
Today, Jägermeister sponsors more than 200 bands nationwide. Based on the likes of our Jägermeister consumers, most of our bands play alternative or album oriented rock. However, we also have some country and even (gasp!) a polka band. Our roster includes bands such as Slayer, HIM, Lacuna Coil, Hinder, cKy, the Bloodhound Gang, Chimaira, Dope, GWAR and more. These bands spread their love for Jägermeister throughout their audiences. This is why a local bar band with a strong following is just as important to us as a national act.
Jägermeister is also a proud sponsor of one of the biggest summer events, OZZFest! Every summer, a Jägermeister Booth is set up at every show on the OZZfest tour. Jägermeister sponsored Ozzfest bands come out to our booth every day to sign autographs and greet fans! Giveaways, Jägermeister Jagerette Models and Jägermeister Bands on a tour!
We loved the concept so much, in 2002, we introduced the Jägermeister Music Tour to audiences all over America. Our first tour, featuring Drowning Pool, Coal Chamber, Ill Nino and 40 Below Summer stormed across the nation to sold out shows! Since that time, the Jägermeister Music Tour has been out with some of the biggest names in rock and metal from Staind to Disturbed to Slipknot and, of course, the almighty SLAYER! Fall 2006 brings a whole new genre to the Jägermeister Music Tour as we bring you Slightly Stoopid and Pepper... coming your way this October!
