DOUGLAS MILES & APACHE SKATEBOARDS

Douglas Miles ( fine artist) and Apache Skateboards ( AS) is art and
about the making of art. AS is not a gimmick, marketing stratagem,
cliche, stereotype, or vanity project. AS is the new way art is being
made. The success of AS has come about
because of the way AS see themselves fitting
into the (art) world. It has also come about by the way
they do not fit into traditional artistic agendas.

AS is part of a viable art movement
(and may have started one as well).
Lowbrow, pop art, native pop, street art, skateboard art, are
just a few of the labels ascribed to the work of Douglas Miles and AS.
They have created their own forms
and
projects to meet the need for art devoid of
the "cult of personality" aspect so prevalent
in the art world. AS is about raw creativity in
varied forms.  The AS "team" consists of thinkers,
filmakers,writers, photographers, skateboarders
 artists and designers.

AS works continually in film, photography, fine art,
 skateboarding, murals,multi-media projects,
 community projects, skate park planning,
skateboard events, apparel design, television, film,
youth conferences and
speaking engagements.
The documentary: Walk Like A Warrior /
The Apache
Skateboards Story is ready
for release and film festival screenings.

Short films directed,
written and produced by the AS "team"
detailing current music- art projects and
skateboarding are posted
regularly online.

The work of AS has been well documented.
The fine artwork of Douglas Miles is inextricable from AS projects.
The links below attest to AS/Douglas Miles' contribution
to the field of art, native art, skateboarding, and
the Indian community.

Not an exhaustive listing but meant as a
reference point for others to research AS and it's work.
It is difficult to confuse AS with any other
organization(s), AS continually, and consistently
creates new works  and projects around skateboarding
(but is not exclusive to skateboarding).
Museums, schools, galleries, skateboarders,artists
and communities ( Native and non-Native)
all play a role in the AS movement as AS takes
art to "the people", making it accesible.

AS has worked with: The Gila River Tribe ( twice), Salt River Pima Maricopa,
Red Lake Nation ( Ojibwe), Navajo Nation (twice)
White Mountain Apache Tribe , San Carlos Apache Tribe , Chemehuevi Tribe ( CA), Agua Caliente Tribe/Warm Springs (CA)
( twice) ,Tohono O'Odham Tribe, Jicarilla Apache( NM)
Gallup UNM, Princeton( NJ) Brown University ( RI)
Harvard( MA), IAIA Museum, Santa Cruz Museum of Art History ( CA),
The Peabody Museum ( MA) and soon, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum( MA).

Apache Skateboards ( the art of) are now in the permanent museum collections of: The Montclair Museum ( NJ) The Eiteljorg Museum ( IN),
The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum ( NM) and
The National Museum of The American Indian
(DC). Apache Skateboards have been featured in
numerous gallery shows and museum exhibitions since 2003
as well as The Art Train USA project.

Amazingly almost no curators or cultural workers have written about
(or requested info from ) AS. Thus it falls upon AS to further
establish
in it's own words, thier role and contribution in the larger arts community.
The DIY ( do-it-yourself) ethic was /is prevalent in the punk rock and
hip-hop movements. The DIY ethic plays a major role in the AS
 movement as well.

For too long Native art has been viewed as "primitive" due to
hierarchical points of view. This has served to directly and indirectly
demean Native art constructs and techniques. This labeling process
serves to deny the innovative ingenuity and aesthetic power of
various tribal (art)forms. Native artists must identify thier own
work without regard for categorizations via archeological
 or anthropological viewpoints.
These schools of thought have continually served
as ways for ( Native) artforms to be theoretically " hi-jacked".
This "hijacking" creates a " pristine lens of the past"
through which all Native art is now viewed. This makes
it
difficult for "modern" art forms to gain recognition
and or acceptance. At this stage in history it is
extremely important with regard to cultural
and intellectual property to establish the AS
work record. Various venues have already
emulated/attempted similar themed programs without
mentioning/listing the work(s) of AS as
 a contributing factor.

AS looks forward to working with curators, writers, galleries,
museums, communities and print/web media.
This article is written in an effort to better inform
cultural workers, museum staffers and those who work
in the field of( Native and non-Native) art about AS.
AS is creating the context within which thier work can be more
effectively and actively viewed and respected in the
here and now.

Here's something for you to enjoy and waist your not-so-precious  time with on New Years Day. We know this is not an exhaustive listing but it was exhausting putting it up. Don't say we never gave you nothing. Where these blogs and sites are now, we don't know. Nor is it the final word on APACHE Skateboards. We are writing our own history, charting our own course, making our own projects, moving at our own pace, and have NO IDEA what we're doing from one minute to the next,  but  " It's My Life And I Can do What I Want" ( c. the Animals)

WE  want to thank all our FRIENDS, Contributors, FANS, Writers, Photogs, FAMILIA, and Brothers and Sisters. These posts do not represent our opinion at times but we are honored to have been featured by and to be  in such good company/companies/brands!

Ok folks:

This is the place where I find ( found) BLOGS
or you can post your OWN BLOG/ LINKS about ( POST) APACHE SKATE BLAST.

Relive the memories, fun, frolic, mayhem, dust, mud, blood, frybread, skating, chick sightings,
JxFxAx mosh-pit , Agent Orange dissapointment, brushes with the law, wildlife or BOBCATS,
...HERE...If you got pics go ahead and post em as well.

( APACHE Skateboards does not endorse the thoughts or words of those who DO post,
just the raw creativity...)

From the Blog of DAMN THE NAN:

...Just about five hours of sleep later, the bro and I got up got ready and decided to meander to San Carlos for the Skate Blast, I made it a mission to see JFA and Agent Orange, all the while soak in the sights and sounds of San Carlos since I haven't been there for a while. I suppose it was in our best interest to leave a lil bit later and sleep more because by the time we got into town, burn out session from the night before kicked in full gear and kept us immobile for a long while. The Skate Blast was pretty cool. Not much room to sit so walking around was frequent, but my time was mostly spent in my truck. Man the tiredness is torture!!! A ride to San Carlos Lake woke us up, and waited the rest of the Skate Blast out.

A caravan through town ended at D. Miles' place and the feast of frybread and bad ass music began. I was itchin for an ndn taco BUT hearing the lovely chaos from atop the hill made me anxious. I started talking to random people, as I usually do in awkward social occasions, and managed to strike up a new friendship with one Tim and one Tom. The two were cool enough to be generous with their provisions and as a four-pack we ventured beyond and uphill to glory. Shit Outta Luck aka SxOxLx was up and to my glee was a rockabilly band that happened to consist of NATIVES!!! I'm convinced that they need no pomade as their hair is just greasy :p. The beginning of the "pit" started then. Pretty small, but kicked ass. The Tics followed, then The Revenge, Dephinger, and the Sirens. During this time the pit grew, the dust flew heavenward, and time seemed irrelevant. It didn't matter if you were native or non, you ended up the same color of San Carlos dirt. It took a lot to hold myself back; I felt like a good round of ass kicking would be the exclamation point to my night. Alas I felt too pretty to revel in that kind of mischief. And rightly so I suppose. Surprises around every corner.

During Dephinger, Tim and I stood on the east side of the stage (the entire first half was on the west) where a particular group of ne'er do wells sidelined. I wasn't in the front but at some point in the set, the kids in the back and the kids in the front of the crowd (not us bystanders) made history and did the most KICK ASS version of Red Rover known in the history of the world! It was chaos and dirt, plain and simple. It was one of those things that you HAD to see for yourself. One could've mistaken it as the retarded offspring of rugby or something. How the kids came up with it, I don't know. I'm almost entirely sure that I will never see it done again for several reasons:

* you have to be at a show that has adequate space to perform something of that magnitude

* you have to have crazy kids who don't mind beating the snot out of each other – happily might one even note!

* it HAS to be in dirt

* there have to ZERO douchebags present so that they don't stop it

Here's to those bitchin kids and the RED ROVER! Sickness. It's mental.

Right after than visual blessing I began to fraternize with some locos from CA. To be honest I'm not sure how I started talking to them, oh well I did and let me just say I have an overwhelming appreciation of talking to random people. I really really really do. Now I don't want to come across as a sexist Nan but there is something different when talking to guys. I don't want to dis my lady friends (except for the few who are cool like that) but sometimes I just want to let out the dirty joke here and there and NOT offend anyone. If you really know me, you know how much of a joker I am. I laugh at any given moment and if a good ol' tasteless joke falls out of me mouth, I expect laughter, not puzzled faces. I have the vocabulary of a sailor and I just let loose sometimes. In any case, a rowdy bunch of understanding dudes like that reminded me that I'm not the only one with their head in the gutter. My thanks to them…even if they thought my name was Arlene...where the hell did that come from.....I dunno...oh, and thanks for the beer…better when it's free.

Now the JFA set itself was everything I wanted it to be, well it surpassed expectations because it was on a porch, in the desert, on a reservation, Apache to be specific. You can see the awesomeness now right? Again my personal thanks to Douglas Miles Jr. and family for that.
Anyway my fav was "Preppy" and wished I got into the mess at the stage but I didn't. Brutal carnage of this magnitude (points at self) is best reserved for jerks, not fun loving people. It was right around the end of the set that I was distracted and never quite made it back to the top-o-the hill. It got brutally cold out of nowhere and my bro and I left. Agent Orange only stayed on for a few songs then the cops came, or so that's the rumor. But oh well. Made it home around 3 or so; not as bad as the night before course the drive from San Carlos is about an hour and half. Not bad. I thought I'd be all bad ass and make church (with the sinning going on) but slept in. All in all, a great way to end spring break. I wish a lot of you coulda made it out. But for those who did, and new faces I met, THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD TIMES!!!

Apache Skateboards / Apache SKATE BLAST '07 w. J.F.A.
Homie Roll Call!

This is long overdue but you ALL rocked IT!:

On Saturday, March 31st, under a clear Arizona sky, the second annual
Apache Skate Blast was held on the San Carlos Apache Nation (two hours
east of Phoenix).

Brought to you by Apache Skateboards (San Carlos, AZ ), anchored by
J.F.A. (Huntington Beach, CA) and with big back-up from AZPX
Skateboards (Phoenix, AZ), this event rocked, rolled and brought the
skate tribes together again to compete, create and wrapped up with a
concert featuring the legendary J.F.A. With major support also from
Charlie Stevens of Gilson Wash District Council, San Carlos Apache
Tribal Council and the San Carlos Boys and Girls Club, this event was
for all youth and promoted the "positive" aspects of this thing called
skateboarding.

With over 65 skaters competing in various categories, all who entered
recieved a skateboard. This was due to the generous support of our
"friends" listed below. With the highlight of the day being the "old
school" competition, a crowd favorite, Matt Price, Tracy Nelson, Rob
Locker, Brian Brannon, and Alex Wessen bert-slid, spun, pogoed, and
ground their way into history beneath the Peridot mesa on Apache land.

After the competition, prizes were handed out, we convened for "food of
the gods" which featured the ever popular fry-bread and beans. With the
chow-line crowd looking like the opening scene from "The Warriors",
everyone chopped it up and prepared for the nights concerto of the
desperado(s) with Corky & Dephinger, Chocolate Helicopter, The
Mongoloids, Shining Soul and The A.I.M. and J.F.A.

It was evident as J.F.A. took the stage that thier sonic groove and
musically mixed mayhem has only intensified over the years. With dust,
dirt and cactus as their moshpit, J.F.A. rattled the canyons, bear,
mountain lions and rattle snakes awake. It's no small wonder J.F.A.
never broke barriers set by radio playlists. Their own integrity and
not
compromising their rocket fueled style has allowed them true creative
freedom. More well-known bands should take lessons from them. They
careened through their greatest "hits" as if there were hell hounds on
their trail: "Beach Blanket Bong Out", "Johnny D", "Preppie", "We Know
You Suck", "Charlie Brown", "Lowrider" and many more! With an encore
they left the crowd yelling for more, they won over new fans from all
generations and tribes.

This is how lightning strikes twice. This thing of ours keeps growing, I want to thank all those who wanted to make it but couldn't but TOLD someone, sent or posted or pasted a flier.

The Apache SKATE BLAST is an event to bring awareness and help build
skateparks across the reservation(s), we want to thank the following
friends and supporters.

Here's the lowdown on the the showdown, so GO to Cowtown and see the WORK for yourself. You'll be mystified and terrified as art jumps off the wall and into your laps. It's worth the drive to TeMPe and you can scour the racks of EastSide for new (old)  James Brown vinyl or Zia for the best used music. BUT for that new deck, sick gear, or flyest kicks this side of Melrose or L.A.?  Any of these Cowtown locations will help you get your fix of the NEW.   + = SELF  HELP  GRAPHICS = +

y

          = APACHE  SKATEBOARDS =

To the Director/ Staff and Governing Board of

SELF HELP GRAPHICS , Boyle Heights L.A.:

An Apache artist from Arizona, I live and work in San Carlos on the Apache Res. It is 2 hours East of Phoenix and very remote. The history and culture of the Apache is strong here. But today we fight ( like everyone else ) for respect and to survive in a country that has forgotten us and who we are, however:

In December 2005 I was part of a show aptly titled ; "Reciprocal Cultura" with Leslie Gutierrez-Saiz at IMIX Books in Eagle Rock CA. During the opening I met Omar Ramirez , . He introduced himself and I did not know him before but based on viewing my work he asked if I would be interested in working with Self Help Graphics at an altalier workshop. Having never been to Self Help but well aware of it's importance and historical weight within the Chicano Art ( Movement) Community for decades.

I was humbled and honored at his request.

He made me the proverbial " offer I couldn't refuse".

So I waited and the call finally came in the Spring of 06 to participate in an altalier whose themes would be comics, terrorism and love. Or love in the time of terrorism., or "terrible love"

(as I finally came to call it. ) Many phone calls later, with dates set and scratched, "El Maestro" Jose Alpuche himself called me and we nailed down a date during the week of August 21-25, 2006. After my biggest art market of the year in Santa Fe New Mexico on August 19-20th , and an 8 hour drive home, some sleep on Monday, I drove another 8 hours Monday night to LA.

I spent one week in Boyle Heights at Self Help Graphics. With no short cuts, I ate, learned, slept, printed, sweated and laughed in a very work intensive print shop. I went home each evening exhausted but excited for the next day as the print began to take shape and colors began to carefully explode onto the paper.

During that historic week , I met and worked with the staff, curators, board members, community volunteers, President of the Board, and Vice President of the Board at Self Help Graphics. I want it to be known that I was treated with the utmost professionalism by all mentioned and afforded much respect. Many came out from the local artist community to meet and see my art and welcome me to the neighborhood.

I finished my print and after being encouraged by Lalo Alcaraz who was "glad he wasn't last" , I was amazed at the power and grace of my new silk screen work. I then realized that artists in the greater community of L.A. are blessed to have their own "indigenous" arts organization like Self Help Graphics.

My prayer is that none take it for granted and that all offer the help and support it is due.

It cannot "run itself" and needs people who are willing to "work" to make it an even stronger force in the larger community. Self Help Graphics without knowing has strengthened me in my own battle for artistic respect. I see that it has helped numerous artists "make it" and I am now honored to be one of them.

The mission and goals of Self Help Graphics is bigger than all of us. We are all Self Help Graphics and we are all responsible for it's flexing ( in the larger art world) and growth.

Today of course Self Help Graphics ( and the culture ) of East LA is known around the world but

I still want to offer a special "Salute" to:

Jose Alpuche and Son of Self Help Graphics for their time and

conversation(s)

And for working patiently throughout the process.

A special Thank you to all the Governing Board for their support and patronage of my work.

A big Thank You to Omar Ramirez for tapping me on the shoulder at IMIX Books.

A Thank YOU to Director Gabriel Tenorio and thanks for the taquitos.

Thank you to my L.A. host(s) Stephen Saiz and Leslie.

Thank You to IMIX books for the opportunity to show.

And once again THANK YOU to Self Help Graphics for not forgetting the Apache(s)

and letting me be part of your grand history and movimiento East of the Los Angeles River.

Viva Self Help Graphics!
