Osk is one of those DJs that you know can pull off any blend mixtape concept. He's got that ear for what works and he understands that the foundation for a good blend CD is the beats. Not only that he subscribes to the notion that shit must be perfect, you can hear it in the little nuances in every release. The 3-5 second clips that keep that interlude going, that few seconds of a vocal clip that tie the "concept" of the track to the title of the mixtape. It's the little things every time out the box and it's those little things that separate a good mixtape from a great one.

Talib and Mos Def are two MCs not to be fucked with on the MIC. The current masses are sleeping and will probably still sleep on those two, let's hope Blendstar wakes up a couple tho. I love how "Beef" starts off with the old Gangstarr and the Osk switches it up before the verse drops and slaps the shit outta you with that hard shit. Styles P and Talib is actually a good fit. "The Level" lyrically can't be denied no matter what beat you put behind it but that neck snapping shit doesn't hurt. On the Talib Kweli blend side of things, "Move Something" is that perfect marriage of 2 beats and vocal, bottom line: that's my shit. I love how Osk tied in Ghostface and Jay Z on "Ms Fat Booty Pt3"...again it all comes back to the beat used as the foundation. Jean Grae is a best if you didn't already know. She will eat an MC like it's a snack, peep "Say Something" and say something different. On the Mos Def blend side of things, "She Wants To Move" is the shit. Mobb Deep and Q-Tip in the mix too, that's how you create your own exclusive.

Smooth, precise, enjoyable, skillful...all words to describe this release. The mixtape is out there people, go download it, burn it, stock it away in your Ipod, cherish it cause you don't get joints like this to much these days.

Title: Pete's, Rhymes and Life (The Pete Rock Story)
..> ..>

Review by: Big Chew
Track list

It's rare these days that DJs want to tell a story with a mixtape. One of the best mixtapes ever made called The Willie Bryant Story dropped earlier this year and was supremely slept on by the masess and I fear the same will happen with this project. We didn't review that project because we had a hand in making it but that was a mistake and once I get another hard copy of that CD it will be right there with this CD in the Rapmullet listening session. So if you want to know how I feel about DJ Osk's latest project just know I hold it in regards to Willie Bryant and that should speak volumes.

Can you believe there are hip hop fans who don't know who Pete Rock is? I mean how can you be a real fan if you don't know the history? I hope this project sheds some light on Pete's influence for the new jacks. I'm giving you a few highlights but honestly all you need to do is go listen to it on the Listening Session and form your own opinion...you will be happy you did. At the very least peep the interludes and learn some shit about Pete Rock. "Pounds Up" is my shit. Pete Rock and MOP need to work on some new shit cause the Osk blend had me open. "Thick Ropes" is all head nod and neck braces. "Run" by Ghostface is a hard track to blend cause Ghost is all emotion and if you use the wrong beat it will be exposed...Osk flipped it proper and he used two beats. The Saigon flip on "Do You Know" has the ill bass...that's why I'm fucking with it. I think "On The Mic" with Big Shug and OC is a true sleeper. OC is the first official "most lyrical" if you ask me. The vibe on "New York" is the shit too...thats what a quality blend will do...make you hear a track in a totally different way.

Two and three beat blends, precise transitions, and Pete Rock interludes make this a true street certifed project. Osk builds the "story" of Pete Rock from his beginning stages right up till 2007 and he does it with music. One thing that sticks out the most to me beyond anything else is that Pete Rock is soulful. His production varies but the constant is the soul vibe that each joint gives off. Some might call it "real hip hop" but it's really just the soul that your hearing, music with some meaning. Track list

I wonder how many DJs actually love making mixtapes? I mean if you don't have some sort of passion for the art then why bother. Its not going to get you rich but if done properly it will most certainly open some doors for you. One of the main reasons I listen to DJ Osk is that he takes the time to put thought into his projects and always presents himself in what I call a proper mixtape way. This project is no different.
I can't say I've always been a Method Man fan, plus I think his flow is tired. "New York" is really nothing different, don't get me started on the hook either. M*E with Styles of Beyond on "Do Dat" pretty much ate that Method Man track alive. Dude said..."and a burner that gets hotter than a Philippine Christmas"…that's hot! (Literally) The "What Now" Osk blend was fire. Sean Price and Termanology on a track is a good look. I'll admit I slept on Black Milk. "Shut It Down" has that classic vibe to it. R. Walker is hosting. If you're not familiar with dude he's a skilled Harlem MC doing his thing. Check out "Yea It's Walker" to peep the word play. "Letyourselfgo" remix might be my favorite joint on the whole CD. Evidence needs more shine on the east coast. Peep Phonte on that hook…true words people. Big Shug and Big Twin on the same track is crazy, "Legbreakers". Those are two cats you don't want to meet in a dark alley with a pocket full of money. If you still are sleeping on R. Walker peep his freestyle on track 14 and then add him to your mixtape rotation. "Southern California Sunset" is smooth, can't front; this is an anthem for the summer. Another MC cats are sleeping on is Piseas, classic MIC style with a liquid flow. Jean Grae kilt her verse on "Say Something" too…Talib Kweli keeping her sharp. I know DJ Osk doesn't have a new track that features Truck Turner! I haven't heard dude since he served cats back in 1997. "Live At the BBQ 2007" was fly tho and Mr. Turner can still rhyme his ass off. Shout to Osk for rocking "Surrender" too. I remember hearing this a minute ago, Rashid Hadee did his thing on this one and the scratched hook is classic.

The bottom line is that this is a dope mixtape. It's "mixed" of course and its full of slept on bangers. This is what "mixtapes" is truly all about people. You go and find dope music, play the shit you like and make the listener hear how you hear the music. I don't care what you play if you actually mix the true heads will listen to it. They may or may not like it but they will listen and they will find and MC or two that they never heard before and become fans…and that's what a mixtape DJ is supposed to accomplish. (7/28/07)

DJ Osk
Title: Rzavoir Dogs

Review by: Big Chew

This mixtape is why you cop and are a fan of mixtapes in the first place. DJs are in the giving mood this December offering up "official" free downloads for the masses. Thanks to Osk for following suit and also for coming up with one of the tightest mixtape concepts of 2006. While other DJs are working on the same ol format of "blend city vol. 254" DJs like Osk drop memoriable mixtapes that carve out a piece of history in thier respective years. See I'm a fan of "the mixtape" more so than the "mixtape DJ". What that means is when you're shooting the shit about this game and you bring up memorable mixtapes you're talking about "the mixtape" specifically; "95 Live", "50 MCs", "Hang Em High", "Spring Tyme Stick Up", "Butta Mixin Rican", "Bittersweet", "Philmatic" and now "Rzavoir Dogz".

If you're not a dumb ass you already now the concept is a play on the movie Resivoir Dogs using Redman, Kool G Rap, Lord Finesse, Big L and Big Daddy Kane as the characters and obvioulsy Osk is play clips of the movie throughout. Now that the slow people possibly understand whats going on lets get into the music. For me shit didn't get set off till Redman said "I'm like rah rah...like I had cerablepalsy" over GZA's "If Your Living In The World Today" and then subsequently Rae's "Verbal Intercourse". If you dont' know Redman was born to rhyme over a RZA beat. To hear G Raps rapid word play on "Fast Life" was bringing back memories while Osk gave "Foul Play" a whole new vibe and actual made that song sound better than the original. Lord Finesse may be lost on the new hip hop generation so next thing you know cats will think the beat for "Liquid Swords" and "Shadowboxing" are the originals for "Brainstorm". Now "MVP" has been used to death but I never get tired of hearing it. Big L's methaphors where def a head of thier time and Osk breaths new life into this old classic. When I heard "Thick" over a classic LA The Darkman beat I had to rewind it and just let me say OC is a beast people. I don't think I've ever heard a DJ use Ghosts "Assassination" to blend a song but it fits with "Put It On", although Kid Capri on the hook was and is always a little much. The thing that stood out the most to me with Big Daddy Kane's section is the fact he sounds dope next to MCs like Pun and the GZA. "Any Type Of Way" has Kane lyrically crawling all over and ODB classic beat. If you don't know "RAW" there is no help for you....Osk did the track justice tho with the remix.

Like I said above....ill concept and one of the best of the year. I liked the rawness in the mixing, meaning shit wasn't always smooth or completely on beat sometimes. It gave the project character tho, especially some of those grungy acapellas and hard transitions. I can certainly appreciate the time and effort Osk put into the project. Break down the MCs used and you find some of the most classic lines ever in hip hop. Not only that it's all over RZA beats! It doesn't get much better creative wise. I know the masses will sleep on this CD considering what young cats consider "old school" these days. Regardless this is that CD you put other people up on and they bug the fuck out cause it's like finding a pound of weed on the side of the road. In this current "microwave" hip hop culture its good to know you can find some slow roasted hip hop cooked to perfection. (12/13/06)

DJ Osk is world wide people, better recognize. Some DJs talk a bunch of shit, drop so called "exclusives" that are on every other "exclusive" mixtape, don't break records, live off the internet for these so called "exclusives" and pretty much run in place. Then you have DJs who seek out good music, support good music and actually play good music when "good" music isn't considered the norm. Am I a big fan of underground hip hop? NO. But I like to hear good music and that's where a DJ Osk comes in to play.

If you consider yourself a hip hop connoisseur and don't know who Esoteric is well I have news for you. You're not a connoisseur. I live 35-40 minutes outside of Boston and if you're a New Englander who dosen't know Esoteric or 7L for that matter then you've never left your Moms basement. Do yourself a favor, listen to "Death Wish" and then start checking for their new album. "Lyrical Swords" is my joint. The GZA is lyrical prowess at its best and along with Ras Kass this track is a rare jewel. Ras: "stick to bitches walls like I'm Peter Parker." Both MCs will have you rewinding shit. "Let's Dance" is just fun man. You know the beat and the rhymes are fly and flashy. My favorite track on the whole CD is "Daisycutta" with 7L, Esoteric and Kool Keith. This joint has an ill vibe and that beat is some next level shit. The more I hear "We Getting Money" by Fat Joe, the more I hate that song. (Jabs a pencil in ear) The sleeper track of the CD is the M.L Freestyle. Dude got a nice conversational flow and he has a conscience too. "Make My Own" is that straight head nod. I need that instrumental; it's perfect for dropping knowledge as Evidence did just that. I'm usually a big fan of Rashid Hadee but I couldn't get into "You Can't Hide". I think it was the stale hook and that beat was too stripped down from what I'm used to hearing from him.

This is a good, quality listen people. It's intelligent hip hop man. I can't think of anything else to describe it. It's always good to hear MCs that know "who they are" as opposed to trying to be something their not. My thing is like this; we need some more real hardcore type beats with the lyrical content that's all over this CD. I think it would hold cat's ears better, I know it would with me. True to form Osk is mixing at a high level. It's a classic mixtape formula with a quality host. When you bring together an MC (Esoteric) who knows hip hop and a DJ (Osk) who knows hip hop it can only mean one thing----a bangin' CD. (6/22/06)

DJOSK WORLDWIDE WARFARE MIXTAPE

" Like the drop says, " G-MODE IS IN THE BUILDING ". Welcome DJ Osk. I know he's from over sea's I just don't remember from where, either way if you're in Amsterdam you're a luck fuck. M-1 holds down the hosting duties, I fuck with dude although he likes to spew off about what's "real" hip hop. I don't like being told what's real hip hop and what's not. Simple explanation: Raw beats and Raw rhymes. Every type of subject matter has its place and you can't force feed the masses anything. Like he says on this CD, "1 fan at a time". That's real simple people. While we're talking about M-1, I was a little disappointed that he didn't have more music on the CD. (Frowns) Osk is one of the only DJs I heard play CL Smooths new joint "Smoke In The Air" and he blended it at that, shit was tight. I fuck with KRS One especially joints off Criminal Minded but he needs to let the whole "I taught all the conscience rappers" talk. I would still pay to see the man rip the MIC on a live show though. In keeping with the blends, "Party Ya Ass Off" with the Liks was my joint. That's feel good music right there and they keep it funky on the lyrics still too. The best and most impressive track on the CD is "4 Brothers" with Masta Ace, Wordsworth, Punchline and Stricklin. This is classic rewind rapping at its best. The sleeper MC on the whole CD is Blaq Poet outta QB. This man is raw with it, got a lot on his mind and will lyrically beat your ass if given the chance. Osk def got his mix on with this CD. Sometimes it worked and sometimes the transitions were about to cause a car wreck and he faded shit out quickly. Def a CD to check out and to appreciate some true lyrical abilities. I keep hearing about these G-Mode cats taking over the game, shit is becoming a reality.....one fan at a time. (3/24/06) by BigChew"
