(Manchester, NH) – The New Hampshire Troopers Association today endorsed Jeanne Shaheen for US Senate, citing her work on behalf of state troopers when she was Governor and her commitment to fighting in Washington for the resources that troopers need to do their jobs.  As Governor, Shaheen toughened the penalties for anyone who risks the safety of a law enforcement officer by committing a hoax, strengthened sick leave for troopers and put more state troopers on the road.
"We don't often endorse in federal races, but in this case we wanted to be certain that New Hampshire voters know that as Governor, Jeanne Shaheen looked out for the needs of troopers," said Lou Copponi, President of the New Hampshire Troopers Association.  "She worked to strengthen our sick leave, raise our pay and put more troopers on the streets.  She has always been a friend to law enforcement in New Hampshire and she will be a friend to law enforcement when she is in Washington."
"Following September 11th, as Governor, I called on state troopers to meet new challenges to our state's security and to respond to the new safety concerns of our citizens," Shaheen said.  "Our troopers rose to meet this challenge ably and without hesitation.  I am proud of the work we did together to put more troopers on the streets and give the troopers the resources they need to do their jobs."
As Governor, Jeanne Shaheen signed legislation to put more troopers on the streets of New Hampshire and she toughened penalties for anyone who risks the safety of a law enforcement officer by committing a hoax.  Under Governor Shaheen, the sick leave rules for troopers were strengthened so that so that no trooper suffering from injury or illness would have to jeopardize his or her ability to support their family.
The New Hampshire Troopers Association represents the non-commissioned men and women of the New Hampshire State Police.  NHTA is committed to ensuring the best possible working conditions for all troopers and works to improve pay and benefits to the men and women of the New Hampshire Troopers Association, who provide professional service to all of New Hampshire's citizens.

(Manchester, NH) —Friday, October 3, 2008, former Governor and current candidate for U.S. Senate Jeanne Shaheen visited the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and received the endorsement of the Metal Trades Council, which represents 2,400 workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. At the shipyard, Shaheen met with workers and discussed the need to protect American jobs. Earlier in the day, Shaheen also released a statement expressing concern over the release of September's job loss numbers, which set a five-year high.

"Jeanne Shaheen has been a great friend to the shipyard and a supporter of the rights of workers here," said Paul O'Connor.  "For too long, John Sununu has put the special interests ahead of New Hampshire's interests.  We need a new direction and new leadership in Washington that will put New Hampshire's middle class families first.  The New Hampshire Metal Trades Council is proud to endorse Jeanne Shaheen because she will stand up for New Hampshire's families by ending the tax breaks for companies that ship American jobs overseas, making health care affordable for every American and strengthening our economy by helping create 21st century jobs."

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Metal Trades Council, which represents so many of New Hampshire's hard-working families," Shaheen said. "Our economy is failing and the middle class is paying the price for the disastrous Bush-Sununu economic policies that have gotten us here. In the Senate, John Sununu has voted for tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.  He's voted for billions in tax breaks to Big Oil while middle class families suffer in this economy.

"When I was Governor, we created 66,000 new jobs in New Hampshire while keeping New Hampshire's tax burden the lowest in the nation.  I'll take that same kind of commonsense leadership to Washington. And when I was Governor, we fought to protect the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and keep those jobs right here in New Hampshire.

"In the U.S. Senate, I will oppose efforts to strip Shipyard workers of collective bargaining rights and I will always fight to make sure the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard gets the resources it needs to remain the best shipyard in the country and I will fight to protect the Shipyard from any attempts to close it."

(Manchester, NH) —Today, at events in Nashua, Concord and Lebanon, former Governor and current candidate for U.S. Senate Jeanne Shaheen met with seniors to discuss the impact of the current economic crisis on Social Security and the consequences of privatization, had John Sununu succeeded in privatizing the program.  In the House of Representatives, he co-sponsored legislation that would require workers under 55 to privatize some of their retirement savings and in the Senate, he has proposed three pieces of legislation that would have privatized Social Security.

"What has happened the last few weeks on Wall Street shows how dangerous and how wrong John Sununu is on Social Security," Shaheen said. "We cannot afford to gamble people's retirement security on a risky privatization scheme.

"If John Sununu and George Bush had succeeded in privatizing social security, the impact of the recent economic crisis would have been catastrophic for millions of Americans who rely on Social Security to keep them out of poverty.

"The way to strengthen Social Security is for Washington politicians to stop borrowing from it. Because of John Sununu and George Bush's reckless spending, our national debt has doubled to 10 trillion dollars, and they've financed their reckless spending by taking money out of the Social Security trust fund, and borrowing money from countries like China.  And John Sununu's risky privatization scheme would add 2 trillion dollars to the national debt.

"We need a new direction in Washington. It's time we had leaders who put the interests of New Hampshire's families, not greedy hedge fund managers and investment banks, first.  That's what I will do as your Senator."

Also at the events, Shaheen introduced the Social Security Guards, a group of New Hampshire voters from across the state who will travel across the state to set the record straight on Social Security and let seniors and their families know what's at stake in this election. At the event in Nashua, Social Security Guards Angie Kopka and Mike Atkins discussed why they are supporting Jeanne Shaheen.

"If you've been watching Wall Street lately and seen the stock market falling apart, you know that it's more important now than ever that we protect Social Security, and that's why it's so important that we help elect Jeanne Shaheen to the US Senate this November," Kopka said.

"When it comes to protecting our Social Security, the choice in the race for US Senate could not be more clear," Atkins said. "Jeanne Shaheen has a long record of speaking out against privatizing Social Security and fighting for our seniors, and she'll continue fighting for seniors as our Senator."

(Manchester, NH) — Today, former Governor and current candidate for U.S.
Senate Jeanne Shaheen was joined by stem cell activist and actor Michael J.
Fox for a discussion about the need for a new direction in stem cell
research.

In his work as head of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's
Research, Fox has been a tireless advocate for the expansion of stem cell
research and the development of better treatments and a cure for Parkinson's
disease.

"I am proud to be here today, campaigning for Governor Shaheen, who has
always been an advocate for expanded stem cell ressearch," said Fox.  "For
too long, ideology has dictated science policy in Washington.  We need
leaders like Jeanne Shaheen in Washington who will stand up for a new
direction in stem cell research and return to the practice of putting
scientific advancement ahead of ideology."

Shaheen, who has consistently been an advocate for expanded stem cell
research, learned last year that her eldest granddaughter, Elle, has
diabetes.

"I believe that Elle and kids just like her here in New Hampshire and all
over the country deserve the very best medical care we can give them,"
Shaheen said. "I believe that families in New Hampshire have the right to
the best medical research. But unfortunately, in the US Senate John Sununu
has stood with George Bush against the development of these potentially
life-saving treatments and cures.

"We need a new direction in stem cell policy in Washington.  I think that
researchers should be permitted and encouraged to pursue both embryonic and
adult stem cell research, with ethical oversight from the National
Institutes of Health. These lines of research could hold the key to cures
for diabetes, Parkinson's, spinal cord injuries – they could impact the
lives of families like ours all across the country.

"Yet under George Bush and John Sununu, we have lost seven years of
potential advancement in stem cell research.  We've lost seven years in the
development of potential cures.  We need leaders who will put scientific
advancement ahead of ideology.  We need a new direction in Washington."

In July, Shaheen outlined a plan to enhance the role of science in the 21st
century, which included expanded funding for stem cell research and a return
to the principle of placing scientific advancement ahead of ideology. In
2007,  when given the chance to vote on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement
Act, John Sununu was the only New England Senator to stand with George Bush
and vote against lifting Bush's ban on funding expanded stem cell research.

On Monday, Jeanne Shaheen for Senate unveiled a new web ad about stem cell
research, featuring Steve Walter and his son, Alex. View the stem cell web

September 19, 2008 - Friday
(Manchester, NH) – Today, Jeanne Shaheen spoke the Portsmouth Rotary Club to outline the need for a new economic direction for small businesses and middle class families. Shaheen also called for increased accountability and oversight in the financial markets in the wake of the turmoil on Wall Street and outlined three steps she believes we should take to prevent this kind of crisis.

Shaheen also kicked off a fire fighters tour today with stops in Manchester and Hampton to discuss her proposals to take our economy in a new direction that works for working families. Shaheen was joined in Manchester and Hampton by IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger and PFFNH President Dave Lang and firefighters from across New Hampshire.

"For too long, George Bush and John Sununu have put the needs of the special interests ahead of working families, driving our economy into the ground," Shaheen said. "The lack of oversight and lax regulation in our financial markets has padded Wall Street's bottom line at the expense of working families.

"The root cause of this crisis is the deterioration of regulation in mortgage markets," Shaheen continued. "John Sununu sat on the banking committee in the Senate for five years while this crisis was developing, and did nothing to prevent it. And now this crisis is putting additional strain on middle class families who are already struggling in this economy. Housing values are dropping even further, pensions and 401ks are in jeopardy and it is becoming harder and more expensive to borrow. We need to end the abusive practices on Wall Street and that means we need a new Senator."

At the Portsmouth Rotary Club, in response to the recent turmoil on Wall Street, Shaheen discussed immediate steps we can take to bring tougher accountability to the markets:

*First, capital, liquidity and disclosure requirements should be developed and strengthened for all financial institutions.
*Second, we should end our patchwork system of overlapping and competing oversight and create one, streamlined system of oversight that functions effectively in 21st century markets.
*Third, we should regulate financial institutions based on the products and services they offer, not based on the kind of institution they are. For example, investment banks who are in the mortgage loan business should be subject to the same regulations as commercial banks.

Regulation should identify, disclose, and oversee risky behaviors – regardless of what kind of financial institution engages in them.
