Current mood:  annoyed
So, you know how we were all excited about Heavy Meadows coming out on vinyl and then it came out last week and a bunch of you ordered it and life was grand? Well, it seems fate has decided to rain on or parade. The vinyl, sadly, is defective. We're quite outraged with this company actually, but mostly just bummed.

So what's the solution? Well, it needs to be repressed, so it won't be available for a couple more months. It will be on solid white this time as opposed to orange, but it will actually fit on your record players so that you can listen to it! That's an important feature to have.

If you've already ordered/received your defective copy no worries, we will contact you and make sure you get a new one!

Sometimes life hands you lemons kids. Squeeze 'em up.

xoxo

Okay, first of all, say word. It is downright ABSURD how many good local releases came out this year. I can honestly say that I listened to new releases by local artists more than everything else. That is so rad! Detroit is an amazing place to be for music.

Lightning Love - November Birthday
Prussia - Dear Emily, Best Wishes, Molly
Hidden Ghost Balloon Ship - s/t
Friendly Foes - Born Radical
Mason Proper - Oily Oxen Free
Nomo - Ghost Rock
Pas/Cal - I Was Raised On Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Laura
Child Bite - Fantastic Gusts of Blood
Pop Project - Stars of Stage and Screen
The Silent Years - The Globe
The Word Play - How I became Illustrated
The Dead Bodies - CCCCXX
The Terrible Twos - s/t

And the best one of course, Javelins Heavy Meadows.

Okay, okay now here's my top 5 for 08. this year new music on a national scale didn't excite me much. So all I've got is 5 faves. Here's the skinny:

Why  - Alopecia
I listened to this record more than anything else this year. Yoni is a great lyrist, the music is fantastic, but it was mostly because the mood of this album really connected with the way I was feeling earlier this year. It's got a special place in my heart forever.

Portishead - Third
Guh. Who saw this coming? No one, that's who. I love to see a band come back after such a long time and totally reinvent themselves! Well, I love it when it's good anyways. When I listen to this,  it feels like a record of songs that Radiohead would write, but it doesn't sound like a Radiohead rip off. I don't know if that makes sense. What a sad, pretty voice Beth Gibbons has. It's good to hear it out from underneath all those effects they used before. I hope they make another record.

The Sea and Cake - Car Alarm
How exciting! 2 Sea and Cake records a year apart from each other!?!? Hell yes. They went back to tinkering with electronics a bit on this one, and I love that. One Bedroom is my 2nd favorite from them and they used lots of cool electronics on that as well....actually because of this record it might be my 3rd fave now. Keep 'em coming boys.

Anathallo - Canopy Glow
That cover is so creepy. I'll tell you what, they really pulled it together and took their band to the next level with one. Its just so much more focused as a cohesive record, not just a collection of jams, which is what I felt about the last one. I have tons of memories and good times attached to Floating World, but Canopy Glow is leaps and bounds a better record. Matt's lyrics and style has turned into something unique, and Jeremiah's drumming is perfect for the band. Northern Lights is the most beautiful song I've heard in YEARS. I'm lucky to know these people.

Colour Revolt  - Plunder, Beg, and Curse
Oh man do love this record! It's what I've been waiting for from these guys. Jesse has the coolest voice ever! So tough, but wild and sometimes even pretty. Most of the time actually. Swamp makes me loose my freaking mind every time I hear it. More people should catch onto this record. They should be bigger than The Beatles. well. You know what I'm saying.

I liked these too:
Born Ruffians - Yellow, Red, Blue
Gang Gang Dance - St. Dymphna
Make Believe - Going To the Bone Church
Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
Rahim - Laughter
Dri - Smoke Rings
Deerhoof - Offend Maggie
Cryptacize - Dig That Treasure

I'm going crazy here. Okay, now here's a bunch of stuff that I jammed pretty hard all year, but these didn't come out in 2008:

STEELY DAN - anything I could get my hands on.
Lifetones - For A Reason
This Heat - Deciet
Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
Mos Def - Black On Both Sides
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
The Clash - London Calling
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key of Life
XTC - Skylarking
Wire - Chairs Missing

Alright. Time to vent.

Jim O'Rourke? What happened to that Drag City release I've been promised?? Why do you torture me so? Two new Dirty Projectors albums? Nope. We didn't even get one. Boooo. And where's those 2 songs Longstreth was doing with David Byrne? Did I miss that? My Morning Jacket - Bummer dudes. To their defense, there's no way anyone could follow up Z. It's TOO good. The Notwist.  Not the exciting comeback I was hoping for.

And finally, a couple of specific jams that got me going this year:
House Jam(xxxchange remix) - Gang Gang Dance
Electric Feel - MGMT
Ring My Bell - Anita Ward
Paranoid - Kanye West
Good Side - Lifetones
Gardenia - SM and the Jicks
Black and Gold - Sam Sparro
Lady Grinning Soul - David Bowie
Candyman - Mary Jane Girls
Strange Overtones - Byrne/Eno

Yo ho ho!

As you can see, we've posted our new Christmas cover "Blue Christmas Goes On", which is featured on the (free!) Suburban Sprawl Music 2007 Holiday Compilation. You can get the whole thing at www.subsprawl.com

A few notes about "Blue Christmas Goes On":
It's all original music by us, we basically just janked the lyrics and threw them in the song. Those lyrics come from 2 different tunes, The first being(of course) the classic holiday song "Blue Christmas", and the 2nd from a lesser known group, PFR. The song title is called "Life Goes On" and it was one of my favorite songs growing up as a kid. The lyrics from this song are in the last verse of ours, and the words just seemed to flow together so well with the theme of "Blue Christmas" that I had to throw them in there. Rarely anything, even covers, are simple with us. Ah well.

-------------------------------

So again, check out www.subsprawl.com for some Christmas cheers and jeers, 2007-2002!
Here's a list of other songs by us that you can find on the website from years past:

2004:
Javelins - Cowboy Kringle
Featuring Santatron 3000(Matt Rickle/Zach Curd/Dave Lawson/Darrin Ficcirelli) - I Accidentally Slept Through Christmas

2007:
Em News(Matt Rickle/Trevor Naud/Kate Bracken) - All Fireplaces

2006:
Provo/Howl(Julian) - A Song From Last Year

2005:
Provo/Howl - Snowmen Have Hearts
Em News - Electric Sled

Happy Holidays!

Hello Myspace friends,

We are glad to inform you that in 2007 things will finally be picking up around here!

As you can see, we've just posted a demo of a new-ish song that will be on our upcoming full length this winter. We hope you like it! It's sort of like a glimpse into our musical process, the actual version will be somewhat different. We think about stuff way too much.

Also, check back in the coming months for other demos that we'll post in an attempt to get people excited in our new 'lil disc!

xoxo!
