Friends,

First and foremost, does anyone know what kind of guitar Alex Weir is playing in The Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense? My curiosity was piqued when I revisited this DVD the other day for the first time since that fateful night when I dared Dan to eat a tablespoon of ground cayenne pepper.

Perhaps more importantly (although, it would be a bit ridiculous for me to make that assertion), we'll be playing a show this Friday at the Berkley Front with our friends Sh! The Octopus.

Thanks to everyone involved with the great shows last weekend in Lansing and Toledo.

LAST FRIDAY:  It was really nice to get back to Mac's bar.  And gosh, Calliope and LaSalle were great, weren't they?  We're trying to set something up with them June 20 at The Small Planet (East Lansing).  We're also going to play an acoustic set at The Record Lounge earlier that afternoon, so stay tuned for details!

LAST SATURDAY:  And how about Mickey Finn's in Toledo?  Three words:  THE HAT COMPANY.  Check them out if you haven't already.  It's like someone took a poodle skirt, sewed one end shut, and now uses it as a musical bag of tricks.  Listen to them and tell me I'm lying.  And by the way, it was really nice to see friends from across Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline.  Figure out that Superdrag thingy...pleeeaaaaaaase!

THIS WEEKEND:  We're back in Detroit with our Friends The Pop Project and Sh! at the Northern Lights Lounge.

Friends,

What better way to celebrate May Day than to guzzle three beers, shower (while guzzling a fourth), get dressed, call three friends (one of which hasn't already guzzled four beers), have them pick you up, and rendevous to Mac's Bar to see Those Transatlantics and three other great bands?  On Saturday, rinse and repeat...

This is a person-by-person Those Transatlantics update...

Trevor has been taking delight in the fact that when he walks down the street with the rest of the band, strangers assume that they are witnessing a group of well-meaning twenty-somethings feeling charitable and taking a bum out for lunch.  Unless, of course we're walking through Ferndale or somplace like that.  Then, people just think he is one of the dudes in Child Bite.  What very few people know is that he keeps a minimum $6,000-worth of travelers checks stored in his hobo beard at all times.  He is also writing new horn and string parts for a few songs on the new LP because his dog ate the old ones.

Kate is writing lyrics to the song One Leg Ed, Brontosaurus. When she is finished, it will no longer be called One Leg Ed, Brontosaurus.  She is also honing her skills as a vibra-slappist, which you can witness this Friday.

Dan just got a new keyboard (or as we like to call it: musical booze shelf).  It sounds really nice, but more importantly: it is larger than his old one...and more flat too!

Mike has been re-potting funeral plants and breaking the basement windows at Dan's house. Amendment: ...and becoming that dude you're friends with on Facebook for no apparent reason, but who responds to every status update you ever make. Creepfest '09.

Nate has been teaching high school students in rural mid-Michigan that using the words "gay" and "retarded" as adjectives is frowned upon outside of rural mid-Michigan.  He tries to inject American historical and geographical information into his lesson plan whenever possible – typically, once or twice a week.

In spite of how much fun we have doing the aforementioned things day-in and day-out (how's that for a folksy expression, Mrs. Palin?), we have scraped together a little free time to play some shows. Yippee!

The first of these shows is the International Pop Overthrow Festival on Friday, April 10, 2009 in Detroit (well, actually Hamtramck).  This should be a great show, as we're playing with our friends, The Pop Project and a bunch of other great Detroit bands.  FYI, the Festival begins tonight (Wednesday) and lasts through Saturday.  You should definitely try and stop out for as many of these shows as possible!

In addition to these hottt shows, we may have another 2 announce on April 25 in Detroit, but that's still in the worxxx!  Suddenly, I'm typing like that dude you went to highschool with who you "friended" on Facebook, but who you never really want to talk to ever again.  You know that guy, right?  Apparently, I'm him (hence the earlier Amendment).  We've also got many more shows booked in May and April, but we'll talk to you about those in detail at a later date.  For now, if you must know, check our calendar.

In any case, we REALLY hope to see as many of you as possible at these shows!

Love,
Those Transatlantics

It's sort of easy to forget about Superdrag. If you own any of their albums (I'll bet many of you own/owned their debut, Regretfully Yours, and didn't think once about grabbing their amazing sophomore effort, Head Trip in Every Key, or either of their two releases thereafter) they sort of sit there 11 months out of the year, and then, seemingly out of nowhere, they pop out at you while you're scanning "S," looking for your copy of Steely Dan's Greatest Hits or The Smashing Pumpkins' Lull EP, and you crack a smile and slide them off the shelf. At least, that's one of the two ways it seems to happen for me. The other involves me getting home from the bar at 2:30 a.m. and heading straight for my music collection humming the melody that accompanies the lyric "It would be a superdrag (superdrag) if you would pass me by..." Hatfield and I used to throw back a PBR or five listening to The 'Drag after the bar.  In fact, the summer before Those Transatlantics started, we got real "ambitous" and raked our entire yard - revealing a total lack of grass, which was ironic now that I think about it – listening to In the Valley of Dying Stars.

[Don't worry, there is Those Transatlantics news in here somewhere]

In any case, I started my annual Superdrag Month about a month ago, which brings me to its close.  Somewhere in there, while we were on our way...
* * *  *  ** * * **
  * ** *blizzard *  ** *
* * **   *  ** * *

 ...to play the January 10 show at the Elbow Room, we (Kate, Nate, and I) listened to Head Trip... and Last Call for Vitriol as my GPS led us astray.  Kate remarked "I totally forgot about these guys," probably recalling a drive back from a 2005 show in Lansing when we (she, myself, and Hatfield) listened to Head Trip... and I nearly killed us while trying to simultaneously drive under an overpass and light a clove cigarette.  Nate, who is likely the TTa member most receptive to FM rock and roll (as is found on Last Call...), said he was digging it while sending Kate and I picture messages of canned "Jack Mackeral."  I opened my message while driving and nearly ran us off the road, but I blamed it on the weather.

This morning, Trevor sent me a text message: Superdrag new album in March.

That's nice to hear.  Sort of makes me want to rake the yard.  Clean things up a little...

After running that complicated member "bait-n-switch" nearly two years ago, we started work on our new album.  I feel that our follow-up to Knocked Out is very much in the spirit of Head Trip in Every Key. It certainly makes me feel the same when I listen to the tracks we have nearly completed. This is a strange perspective to have, considering I had a significant part in one record and none in the other. In any case, we are drawing closer to the completion of the record. You can bet we'll keep you posted.

Until then, we've got some shows (Detroit, Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, Toledo, etc.) to keep you interested, and we're booking more as you read this.

See you in April, May, etc.

Whatever you do, Do the Vampire.

Yee haw!

That was a fun show last week at Rubbles with our very special friends, Javelins and The Sinners, don't you think?  We really appreciate all y'all that came out to see us and them and the other guys (not to be confused with The Kind of Guys...).  For those of you who weren't able to make it (shame on you!), check out the photos we posted here.

Don't fret if those photos aren't enough; we've got a few shows booked (and several more on the way) during the late-summer and fall of 2008.  Be sure to check back often to see when we'll be in your neighb...er...nearby.

On Halloween, we're back at Rubbles for what will likely be a creep-fest to rule all creep-fests. This means that things will be very creepy. We'll let you know who will be sharing the bill as soon as we know. Creepy Creep!

In other news, Trevor has been crafting a country-infused, glam-rock opus that details his recent struggles with betting on unnamed racehorses; Kate has been at the racetrack betting on any horse that has a name; Dan has been writing songs about the effects of barbituates on the sleeping habits of horses.  Nate has been learning how to whistle the 'Stones "Wild Horses"; and  Mike has been discussing installation art with convicted murderers.  Most of this is true.

Love,
Those Transatlantics

Comrades,

It is with great excitement that we announce the return of friend and co-founding member, Kathleen Bracken.

"How did this all come about?" you may ask…

To answer simply: we arrived at the conclusion while recording instrumental tracks for our upcoming and yet-to-be-titled LP, that Kate's presence was being missed noticeably in both process (for us) and product (for you and us). In realizing this, we all talked it over for quite some time, and (hooray!) we have reached an agreement that any and all future Those Transatlantics music will include her artistic contribution via sweet, sweet voice and musicality-sation-ness-ocity.

Capital "A" Also, our close friends and musical allies Dan Louisell and Nate King have joined us to help finish the upcoming record and assemble a live performance that's sure to knock you socks off, so don't point your feet at us next time you come out to a show [bracketed as opposed to parenthesized: HA!]. We are sooooooooooooo excited to get out and play for you, debut the new material, and play some of the ol' standards we've all come to enjoy.

Speaking of ol' standards, we posted some of our favorite moments from the Self Titled and You're Seated in the Back EPs on the MySpace homepage…you know, the page you were just looking at. Additionally, we put some of the tracks from Knocked Out up so you could keep yourselves amused while we spruce up some preliminary takes of the new jams for your previewjoyment.

Because you have eyes, you probably already noticed that there are some new photographs up as well. Your eyes would never betray you; and as a result, we can confirm that these photos do, in fact, exist. In these photos (which were taken by this gal), you will notice that the current TTa line-up is comprised of five persons: Dan, Kate, Mike, Nate, and Trevor. Joe [Clark], our resident bassist and gifted-son, has been tracking his little [big] heart out with us in the studio.

Phew! Hopefully that all makes sense. Check back because things are really starting to roll along.

LOVE!!!

-Those Transatlantics
