In 1947, Alan Lomax went to the infamous Parchman Farm prison in Mississippi to record the inmates. It's all vocals and rhythm with sledghammers. Tragic circumstances - real music. Music that's sung because people wanted to or had to - not to show off or make some money. Songs from the gut.

His melodic slide playing always inspires.

"We'll Never Turn Back" by Mavis Staples, produced by Ry Cooder. Soul-wrenching performances by Mavis, and Cooder's slide on "Eyes on the Prize" brought tears to my eyes. A classic collection of gospel-style "freedom songs" that is one of the most inspiring I've ever heard. Honest, off-the-floor recording with Ry Cooder and band. This is absolutely where I'm coming from these days.
