Thanks to AMP Magazine for choosing Secret Lives as their Monthly Music Recommendation for November!

Here's what they had to say:

The Facts: Though their name implies a group wanting to be kept under wraps, Secret Lives of the Freemasons are doing anything but. With a dance-inducing sound and a "let's get this party started" attitude, this group from Asheville, North Carolina, has created an an album that is the perfect soundtrack to Friday nights.

Review from RockMidgets.com

Secret Lives of the Freemasons are either very smart or very lucky. As they ready Weekend Warriors for release, it seems they're fortunate enough to be in possession of some all-important qualities. Firstly, they're gifted with unusually pristine pop sensibilities, meaning that the mainstream is most likely poised to welcome them with open arms. Secondly, and most importantly, they've got the knack for producing hooks big enough to catch a whale.

Combining party-ready pop punk with vocals heavily reminiscent of Glassjaw / Head Automatica frontman Daryl Palumbo, Weekend Warriors is the sound of a band having the time of their lives, and winning your heart in the process. 'Mascara' boasts a chorus destined for the airwaves, while 'Feels Like Home' is a near-flawless pop highlight.

Closing track 'Life Begins at 40oz' wraps things up in style, leaving you with the feeling that it's only a matter of time before the stages these guys perform on get a hell of a lot larger.

REVIEW FROM SMNNEWS.COM

This North Carolina band play the kind of melodic-rock that was just makes you want to get in your car, roll the window down and sing-along! In this day and age of metalcore bands screaming and growling their way through entire records, it is refreshing to find a band where the singer actually weaves melodies instead of deconstruct them. Secret Lives of the Freemasons have been slugging it out in the VFW Hall and basement circuit for the past few years and 2008 finds them releasing their debut album for Victory Records. Hopefully the label's considerable resources can help the six-piece get the kind of recognition they rightfully deserve.

Their carefree arrangements and hooky guitar refrains recall Hot Rod Circuit's poppier moments. Their entire approach actually brings me back to 1999, when bands like this were more common. The band relocated to Winston-Salem and recorded Weekend Warriors with producer Jamie King who is known more for his work with heavier bands like He Is Legend and Between the Buried and Me. The move paid off in spades as his crisp mix fits the bouncy arrangements perfectly. The songwriting is also impressive with fully realized lyrical ideas and dynamic shifts around every corner. The dissonant chords that push and pull the verses of "Dirty Laundry" set up the kind of triumphant chorus that most bands would kill for! The award for most impressive track goes to "Why We Run." From beginning to end, this one never lets up from delivering one earworm after the other! Time will tell if Secret Lives can reach the larger audience that Victory Records can help them reach but what is certain, they deserve it.

We Say: 5 out of 5

It's a rare thing indeed to find a band that gets you on your feet, AND singing along the first time you ever see them live. That, however, is exactly what Secret Lives of the Freemasons does.

Secret Lives of the Freemasons is: vocalist Brien Worsham, guitarists Jim DeBardi and Tucker Ensley, bassist Josh Carden and drummer Travis Moss. To put it quite simply, these guys know how to rock the house.

On first listen of their newest album Weekend Warriors, A Victory Records release, I was struck by how many of the tracks I recalled after checking it out in its entirety. The album starts off hard and fast with the new party anthem "Chug and Leave," and only gets better from there. Instant favorites like "Mascara," "Dirty Laundry," and "The New Whack" get you singing along immediately, and heartfelt tracks, "Feels Like Home," and "Painting Monsters," are this generation's side-A mixtape songs.  The grand finale, "Life Begins at 40 Oz," seems to be a parting thank you for listening from the band - it pumps you up and gets you on your feet, dancing.

Travis Moss's clean and precise drumming is relentless throughout, as are the skilled guitar stylings of both Jim DeBardi and Tucker Ensley. Bassist Josh Carden steps to the plate with a more upfront style of play, and an amazing stage energy. Vocalist Brien Worsham stymies critics with his vocal ability - almost every track features his multi-octave range reminiscent of Fallout Boys' Patrick Stump, a roughness that reminds one of Head Automaticas' Daryl Palumbo as well as the gritty growling associated with other post hardcore acts.

SP recently caught up with the band on their current tour and enjoyed two shows at different venues - The Orpheum in Ybor City, FL and Backbooth in Orlando, FL. The high energy performance these guys give and dance party anthem style songs keeps the crowd on their feet, cheering for more.

Keep an eye out for these guys. One thing is for sure - they're going to be big.

After the first spin of Weekend Warriors, the newest release from Secret Lives of the Freemasons, it became instantaneously clear to me that these boys will not be living very "secret lives" for much longer. Being one of Victory Records most recent roster additions, Secret Lives were set up for success. Weekend Warriors, which is the band’s second full-length album, has become one of those albums that I just can’t stop listening to and will soon be on the IPOD playlists of post-hardcore fans everywhere.

The first track on the album is "Chug And Leave." With lyrics resembling the typical college student’s weekend storyline, this starting track is destined to be a dance-along, sing-as-loud-as-you can type of tune. The upbeat drumming techniques of Travis Moss and sharp guitar riffs provided by Jim Debardi and Tucker Ensley, only add to the "danceability" factor. The album then moves into a more lyrically-evolved direction, with front man, Brien Worsham belting out "your tongue is a brush bucket of drama-- go out and paint the town blue tonight," about midway through the song. Moving further ahead, the album tends to take on a more hardcore version of pop-punk. The drumming remains quick and decisive throughout the entire album and the dual guitar melodies create a vision in my head of teenagers rocking out as hard as they can at a show. When coupled with a standard groove infused bass line and melodic vocals, the Secret Lives surely got it right this time around. Whether it be the catchy vocals of "Dirty Laundry" or the sing-along styling of "The New Whack" and "Why We Run," these songs will bring any true post-hardcore music fan out of their seats.

Comparatively speaking, Weekend Warriors has been said to exhibit vocal stylings similar to Head Automatica with musical stylings similar to Glassjaw. Personally, I think that the vocal and lyrical content is more developed than that of Head Automatica but the album definitely shows some musical characteristics one might find in an old Glassjaw tune. Weekend Warriors is a no-questions-asked amazing follow up to This Will Make You Dance and the label change from AstroMagnetics to Victory Records becomes quite obvious in terms of quality and likeability (not to mention the dropping of a third guitarist). Victory Records made a great decision signing Secret Lives of the Freemasons last summer, as Weekend Warriors is a great release from an up and coming band that is sure to be hitting the scene hard within the next few months.

This is the kind of band that you want to root for. You just know that they're driving around in some beat up van, and playing in some pretty dark clubs. Secret Lives of the Freemasons deliver these songs with the kind of passion that only true believers can sum up. The lead singer unleashes a mighty yowl over big guitar riffs, and the drummer propels the band forward while remaining sympathetic to the songs. This band is all about doing the fundamentals, and doing them well. The producer has done a good job of harnessing the power of the band, and there's no doubt that these 12 songs must sound great live! The Who-like drum and guitar flourishes of "Feel Like Home" will induce some serious air guitar playing. "Mascara" is like an endless hot riff, and the bass is deployed more up front to great effect. So go ahead, root for The Secret Lives of the Freemasons. We need all the authentic, hard working bands that we can find. And the fact that they can write really catchy, three-minute plus anthems doesn't hurt either.- Phil Rainone

Secret Lives of the Freemasons - Weekend Warriors

5 out of 5

I was recommended to SLOTFM about a year ago. I was interviewing a band and I asked the question, "Who can't you stop listening to?" He said "Secret Lives of the Freemasons", he was right. They have a very good solid sound to them and are exciting. If I had to put my finger on whom they sounded like, I would say Fall Out Boy at first. I have never been comfortable with someone's voice like I am with SLOTFM. They keep it simple and make it count with every note and lyric that they sing. Certain bands seem like when they release an album, you can tell if they had a good time with it, or it they were at each other's throats the entire time. If I had to guess, these guys had an awesome time recording Weekend Warriors. Just in time for summer, expect a pretty big response from these guys, like Taking Back Sunday big. I am pretty speechless about what else to say about these guys, they're just that damn good.
