FLIES ARE SPIES FROM HELL
–
Red Eyes Unravelling (self release) - The Southern English band have been
slowly building up a reputation with their consistent playing and their
self released demos/singles, and all the time the instrumental post rock
thing has been building to a point now where the whole idea is almost stagnating
– too many bands all following the same blueprint. Are Flies Are Spies
are almost in danger of missing the whole boat with this long overdue debut
album...? Almost but not quite because their take on euphoric
anthemic instrumental post rock does have a little extra in there. Sure
they do all that epic building up until things touch the sky and explode
like a black emperor thing like all the others, but Flies Are Spies From
Hell have a little sense of classical Englishness in there with their piano
and their dramatic time and space - a healthy hint of early Genesis in
those melodies, a more than welcome touch of proper prog and there goes
a bit that sounds like something off The Lamb and there’s a bit of a nursery
crime (nothing TOO obvious). These Flies are a little less predictable
with their refined melodic instrumental post rock adventures. There may
not be any groundbreaking musical revolutions here, there is some rather
healthy meat on the bones though and some positively adventurous foundations
to build on. This is a more than satisfying debut album, something a little
more for you post-rock flavoured progheads – more than challenging some
of the bigger names associated with the whole scene - and with gorgeous
things like the rather subtle, rather strident
King Sly, more than
enough to hold on to. Flies Are Spies From Hell have made a fine fine debut
album, a bit more than just another instrumental post rock band here, no
boats missed, no great deadeners, all good and growing with every new listen.
Recommended.

Current mood: satisfied
Debut album “Red Eyes Unravelling” – Released 12th December 2009....
Our 7-track debut album will be released next month – some new versions of old favourites alongside newer material – same forward-looking, solid, epic instrumental post-rock. It was recorded by our friend Joe Harding (whose day job is engineering for Sting’s keyboard player oddly enough). We used studios in Clapham (Morcheeba’s old “Back Passage” studio), Haslemere and London. The artwork is by our mate and I Am Joy Festival / Joy Gallery founder Joe Worthington. Its been held back by various maddening things like the studio being attacked by lightning, postal-strikes and incompetent printers but now its here and we’re very happy with it. We hope you enjoy it too.
Cheers to everyone who supported the making of this record, and to everyone in advance for buying it...
“Red Eyes Unravelling" 1. Swimming in Streets 2. Wallow in Threat 3. Glass Light Shatters
4. Mountain Language 5. Welcome Wolves 6. King Sly 7. Great Deadener

Hi everyone, just thought i would give an album update as its been a while since you have heard from us on this front. We have decided to remaster the album before releasing it as we were not completly happy with a few elements of the previous master. This is very frustrating as were so eager to get it out but in our view you can't release something your not completly happy with other wise whats the point in doing any of this.
We will keep you updated as to when it will be released but we expect it to be in the very near future. We were so close to releasing the album that we actually sent it to be printed and at the last minute had a change of heart. Joe Worthinton from the I Am Joy crew who does all our artwork has done an unbelivable job with our album artwork and for that were forever in debt to him.
We are currently booking some shows for the second half of 09. A potential trip to Europe sits in the mist, so too does a tour in November and some sporadic gigs from now until then so we will keep you posted as and when more news comes out.
Currently listening to east strikes west who are just about one of the best up and coming bands around right now. keep an eye out for them and give them a listen too.
We hope to see you at our gig at the I Am Joy festival on Aug 13th!! Should be an amazing Festival with evrything in the spectrum of art and music to be displayed. I Am Joy - Chichester - this Aug.
We are also playing at a festival in wales later in Aug which should be amazing too. Comfort festival Aug 21st - 23rd, check it out and come along.
Thanks Will -

Lastfm'er TomG88's (Tom Griffiths) review of the Good Ship, Kilburn show : "First onto the pitlike stage of the Good Ship are
Flies are Spies from Hell,
winners of the best name competition by far I feel. They are not some
trashy metal band as perhaps the name implies, they are a piano led
post rock outfit. And while they sound initially like they are going to
be interchangeable with any one of a hundred others, these guys
distinguished themselves not by being innovative but by being masters
of their chosen art. Fantastic drumming, brilliant piano, heavy guitars
(I especially loved the long haired headbanging rhythm guitarist who
looked like he'd wandered out of a metal band) and a suberb sense of exactly
when to put in a break out or launch into a solo. This is the kind of
music that makes you see stuff in your head, I especially liked a track
with a very arabian feeling opening riff that just went on to become
more and more epic... i'm listening to them now and they don't lose anything to the studio either. Prima.
Wild Dogs In Winter,
then, had a tough act to follow. They did so by playing something
totally different, very very slow building, spare and slightly drone-y
music with lots of lyrics, and occasional melodic rocky releases of
tension. This band didn't really suit the hyped-up post-rock
already-slightly-drunk crowd, who talked over a lot of their stuff. I
thought they were good, if hit and miss, some tracks where the vocalist
used entirely spoken word lyrics, like poetry with a sinister backing
track were hypnotically effective, but unfortunately I really don't
rate his singing voice that highly.
Round 3 and the also quite well named Maybeshewill
stepped up to bat. The sound was mercifully much better than at the
Windmill. It was still apocalyptically loud, but all the instruments
and samples could be discerned, rather than merging into a fuzzy mess.
Maybeshewill subvert the traditional quiet loud quiet loud formula of
post rock by starting loud and getting EVEN LOUDER in the rock out
bits. There's not much else to do but nod your head and slide into the
relentless yet somehow still musical noise. The sample from previous
album finale Not For Want Of Trying felt devastatingly apt in these uncertain times as the guitars and drums howled around it. I think I finally get it.
Und endlich haben wir And So I watch You From Afar...
At the Windmill, these guys were the more melodic of the two
headliners, but tonight they showcase a much harder direction, heavier
even than Maybeshewill with a real punk rock moshpit feel to their
heavy guitar post rock. This band have so much manic energy when they
play live that it gets everybody going. I am not a frequent listener to
angry music, but anyone who is should listen to this."

Cheers to everyone who came out to see us on
our tour with Wild Dogs in Winter a couple of weeks back. It was definitely our
best yet. Cheers to Wild Dogs for being such a good laugh. They created
spine-tingles every night – and still managed to sound majestic looking like
pickled prawns having burned themselves raw in the bright Brightonian sun. Was
brilliant to share stages with Maybeshewill and ASIWYFA – we moshed our
bollocks off. Will got headbutted and I cut my head open on Vicky’s bass but
such are the occupational hazards. Cheers to all the promoters : King Ale Shows; Nice
Weather For Airstrikes; Final Cut; Jimmy / Big Hair @ The Cellar, Oxford; Ally @ Hamptons;
and everyone in the I Am Joy collective. Big cheer for everyone who made the
last night in Chichester such a blast, and for
the aftershow parties. Final thanks to all the bands we played with – check out
the links below.
We’ll get some photos up soon.
Take care, Chris.

Thank you to everyone who came out for our recent gigs with Monsters Build Mean Robots. We had a great time, hope everyone enjoyed themselves too. Cheers to all the bands we played with (especially fbcfabric&reindeer who were sublime and true gents). There's some photos from the tour uploaded now.
We're working on the album now so won't be playing much at all (apart from our Vessels gig at the Chi of course). I'm starting monthly nights with the I Am Joy Festival in Chichester so look out for them too......
Chris.

Hello all, we have had two excellent evening of the tour so far this week. High Wycombe and Petersfield. High Wycombe was a great show. The nags head is a cracking little venue and line up was very enjoyable to be a part of. Constellations stood out for me. The man played a great solo show, layering beautiful loop after beautiful loop whilst hammering drum patterns over his pick ups. the effects were stunning and Chris and Pete plan to get him down to Chichester very soon for an I AM JOY night/ bully the ugly girls night. Although i had to get home i think Chris and monsters build mean robots drank long and hard into the small hours of the morning with fine Wycombe folk, who provided them with a place to stay, a lock in and free grolsch. So thanks to everyone in Wycombe, the place was rammed and it was a top night. Petersfield, our home school town gig was very quaint and civil, great to see our friends at this gig and who ever else turned up. Pete managed to get a good sound so were all happy. It was a good gig. Tonight we all hit the road and head east towards kent. Thats right, rochester tonight!! see you there i hope, Up C Down C will surely put on a fine show and once again we will be pushed to perform at our best. I love Instrumental rock
Will

I think sometimes other bands get the best out of you. Last night Monsters Build Mean Robots played to such a high standard that it put the pressure on us to try and be at our very best. The same can be said of 'FBC Fabric & Reeindeer' and 'eat lights become lights' the night before in Brixton. This is whats its about. Playing with excellent bands who step it up night after night and force you to keep focused and on your toes. The joiners is one of those venues where you can put your mind at rest, and your trust in the hands of the sound engineer because your always guaranteed a great sound. Thanks to Sweat Mouth who delivered us some core penetrating drones. Sweat mouth are amazing because even though two of their members could not make it last night they refused to pull out and instead improvised between the two of them. Superb stuff. There are lots of bands I think who could take a leaf from their book. And also thanks to the excellent Ni Dieux Ni Maitre who were also great, playing music of a similar vein to Sweat Mouth but with the addition of some pounding drums {the first time they have ever used drums i believe}. The night was inspiring and we want to thank Aline from UZine who came to the show and is writting some words about us and I believe she is also writting a piece on Monsters Build. So keep an eye out for that. Right, two days now to shovel our souls from the grotty floor and get them back inside us before we go to High Wycombe on wed, which im told by Mr Pete Lambrou, has a lovely little post-rock type scene burried beneath the surface. We shall hopefully see some of you pagan wanderers on wed then. Au revoir Will x

Mmm, another cracker. Cheers to everyone who came down. Eat Lights Become Lights were brilliant - we refused to let them leave the stage until two encores had been played..... All the staff were lovely - I think we may have found our new home for London gigs. Just listening to the fbcfabric&reindeer album - real downbeat atmospheres and Ballardian alienation, go see.....
Ni Dieux Ni Maitre and Sweat Mouth tonight. Love those Sweaty buggers....
By the way, its Reading weekend right? Does anyone still go to that juvenile, over-priced, corporate soul-suck anymore??
