The most disturbingly compelling thing that I've found online recently...?
Thursday, January 08, 2009
As ever it seems that I totally love to gas about fashion… I have been officially 'outed'… I have a passion for fashion!

The other day on the 1Xtra Breakfast Show we had a lovely fashionable theme, sugar coating our conversation and tunes. We chose Pharrell Williams as our Hatrick Hero musical icon, because Trevor and I mutually decided that he was key contender in the apparent hip hop / indie crossover that has developed since he arrived on the scene… Even though some of you listeners disagreed… But that's what I love the most… Both fashion and music are linked topics of debate.

We invited stylist Harris Elliot who has worked with the likes of Mark Ronson, Dizzee Rascal, John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Amerie, Ciara, Scarlett Johansson and more. He gave us an interesting insight into a couple of his biggest trend predictions for 2009… Leather and Bright colours…I've elaborated a bit and added some pics and things…

LEATHER - Rocking a nice warm leather jacket is oh so HOT right now!

Biker: Pharrell Williams looking typically, swaggertastically hot in blue, black and white leather biking jacket! FYI: You can easily pick one of these up on the net y'know…

Grey: Okay so Mia and Santogold always look heavy. But please note Santogold's battered grey leather jacket (left). FYI: You can easily get one pretty much identical to this in any vintage shop, choose a size that's a little bit small to get slightly cropped look, but not to tight too move!

Fitted: Lupe Fiasco looking sharp in leathers!

Collarless: Fierce Scarlett Johansson! I think this is proof that you blatantly wouldn't mess with a lady in leather.

You can send your measurements to leather manufacturers abroad online and get a leather creation of your dreams made for you cheaper then it would cost you over here!

BRIGHT COLOURS - Male or female it's important to keep it loud and proud too. I had a boyfriend once that only wore black. He was way too serious in the end!

Miss Sevigny (middle) is a true style trooper and on this cover of Nylon (hipper than hip American mag) she is delicious.

Singer/actress Paloma Faith always gets it right. Accessories are a good way of introducing colour if you are sceptical, oh and accessories look better when they are bigger in my opinion.

Bob Marley has become my biggest style icon recently, check out the matching green combo… I ADORE HIM.

Jamie from Klaxons is working this 80's throwback zip-up I think this would good on Trevor behind the decks? Men look lovely in pink.

One of Harris' most important tips was, whatever you wear… wear it with confidence and I couldn't agree more.

Gem Xx

To listen to Harris Elliot explaining why he thought Kelly Rowland used to look like Dionne Warwick and why he had to allow Daniel Bedingfield's dodgy boots.

A friend of mine recently said this to me during a phonecall... " God, I'm such a professional, I stayed at work to get things finished when I could've been at The Spirit party!" and that really did mean something as this friend of mine is a massive Scarlett Johansson fan and had been personally invited to attended the launch of Frank Miller's new film 'The Spirit' starring Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, and Samuel L Jackson.

Each of those big 'starry' names attended a launch party in London recently and I was there, hungover from the 1Xtra & Radio 1 Christmas party and armed with a microphone...I just didn't have the heart to tell her in that phonecall that it was actually a load of codswollop.... Okay so my bitterness may be increased by the fact that I was in the media scrum/pit where the 'stars' where paraded along with their PRs (PR's job is to get whoever they are looking after as much press coverage as possible) literally tugging them along. "Great tugging action!" I exclaimed to Samuel L Jackson's (fierce looking) lady PR, I was genuinely impressed, I would be terrified to tug Mr Jackson... Needless to say no smile was cracked! It was my first time behind a rope in this type of situation and I was soon realising that it wasn't that much fun! I'm sure that there must be some 'star' out there that has lost a tooth from a microphone being shoved in their face. It was weird.

My knees did knock together as Samuel approached though and I got out my two all important questions. Eva was savvy and beautiful, a lot smaller in real life than I expected and revealed to me what she eats for breakfast every morning, Scarlett seemed so very demure and ladylike and comic legend Frank Miller (also director and writer of Sin City) didn't really like me asking him what he like for brekkie and walked off... Ooops.. I need to learn some red carpet etiquette it seems...and if I'm honest I would've probably loved the party if I was on the other side of the rope!(The Spirit is out in cinemas on January 2nd 2009)

Wowsermatrouser! Myself, Charlotte (far right), and Janine (far left)  decided it was time for the 90's trio girl group to be revived….. We asked you guys what you think we should be called. Some of the response were too rude to tell you but our faves were:

Sourbabes
Sisters Without Voices (SWV)
1Xtra Honeyz

BUT……..

We let Rampage have final choice and 'GIRL'S ALLOW IT' was born…and even convinced Trevor Nelson not only to manage us but also feature on our first track! We then consulted a top stylist about our image...

Our cover of 'Freak Like Me' originally by Adina Howard was exclusively sung live today on the 1Xtra Breakfast show. Please have a listen and let us know what you think!???

I was very excited about meeting UK designer, Ozwald Boateng.. I felt totally inspired! It was refreshing to meet someone from deep within the confusing fashion world that's obsessed with status, big egos, extravavagance, seriousness and drama!

I've only ever been in the same room as the acclaimed tailor from afar (he's been comfortably seated in the front rows of various fashion shows and I've been standing at the back in awe of the entire event!)…. but interviewing him was better than imagined.

Ozwald and Trevor have known each other since they were young and you could tell that they enjoyed hanging out together again. No 'showbiz', just two 'ol skool Hackney boys done good!

He spoke about how they used to go to the same parties when they were in their teens! Apparently Trevor would be wearing leopardskin shirts on the decks whilst Ozwald always dressed in a suit of some sort!

Listen now to hear the full interview:

I'm interested to hear what you think of Ozwald Botang, does his work inspire you too? Which other designers do you rate?
