ORNE: The Conjuration by the Fire

Here’s a great LP by a Finnish outfit formed by members of doom-metal band Reverend Bizarre. They play real dark progressive rock with complex and subtle instrumentation including keyboards, flute and sax. This one should strongly appeal to fans of a.o. BlackWidow, Still Life, Steel Mill, Necromandus. However, Orne bring their material with a very personal, melancholic, Nordic approach.

- Hellride Music, USA:

Taking cues from the greats such as Van der Graaf Generator, Black Widow, King Crimson, Gabriel-era Genesis and Pink Floyd, Orne create majestic darkly progressive rock with a folk flair. Features Peter, Void and Albert from the highly acclaimed Doom trio Reverend Bizarre as part of a full seven-piece band. This is destined to be a classic.

Album of the Month November 2006 (*****)

Nimi Orne ilmaantui silmiini vasta viime vuoden kev....ll.. Reverend Bizarre haastattelun yhteydess.., vaikka kokoonpano onkin toiminut yhdess.. nimell.. Orne jo vuodesta 2002 saakka ja jopa ennen sit.. nimell.. Mesmer. Ensimm..isest.. kohtaamisesta ehti kulua per..ti puolitoista vuotta siihen hetkeen, kunnes Ornen musiikki kantautui korviin saakka albumin The Conjuration By The Fire voimin, sill.. tiukka p....t..s olla tutustumatta demomateriaaliin piti loppuun saakka. Orne on hyvin pitk..lti pian hajoavan Reverend Bizarren kokoonpanosta ja vierailevista soittajista koostuva progressiiviseen rokkiin suuntautuva yhtye, joka sekoittaa ainakin ensimm..isell.. albumillaan hyvin mielenkiintoisella tavalla progea ja 70-luvun heavya aina doom-metallin ja jopa folkin s..vyihin, pit..en samalla kiinni hyvin h..m..rist.. ja tummista tunnelmista. Jo t..m.. tieto riitti tekem....n The Conjuration By The Fire yhden odotetuimmista kotimaisista albumeista aluksi vuonna 2005 ja sittemmin t..n.. vuonna. Sen sijaan jo itsell..nikin pitk..ksi venynyt The Conjuration By The Firen odotus palkittiin lopulta albumilla, jonka toisia puolia osasin odottaa, mutta samalla Orne p....si my..s yll..tt..m....n sek.. koko ulosantinsa tyylitajulla, albumin tyylill.. ett.. sen pienimmill..kin yksityiskohdilla.

Maailman siirrytty.. jo jonkin aikaa sitten 2000-luvulle, ovat monet perinteisiin raskaan musiikin lajeihin pyrkineet projektit kaatuneet erilaisilla tavoilla omaan mahdottomuuteensa ja onhan se totta, ett.. tiettyjen aikakausien henke.. on hyvin vaikea tavoitella yht.. aikaa aidolla, toimivalla ja tuoreella tavalla. Orne tekee ainakin omalta osaltaan mahdottoman mahdolliseksi, sill.. jo vuosia hautunut The Conjuration By The Fire ei ole ainoastaan aidosti oman aikakautensa edustajalta kuulosta albumi, vaan my..s ehdottoman tyylitajuisella n..kemyksell.. toteutettu annos jotain jo kauaksi j....nytt.. Orne yhdistelee s..vellyksiss....n niin 70-luvun tunnelmallisen progen sek.. doom- ja heavy-metal b..ndien soundia todella aidolla tavalla, mutta sotkee l..pi albumin mukaan my..s folkahtavia elementtej.. aina mets..isi.. huiluja ja pianoja my..ten, unohtamatta tietenk....n oman latauksensa albumille tuovia saksofoneja. T..ss.. kaikessa hienointa on kuitenkin se, kuinka Orne sitoo t..m..n kaiken yhteen omalla persoonallisella tavallaan, kuulostamatta liikaa esikuviltaan ja viem..tt.. silti ulosantiaan liian moderneihin suuntiin. On nimitt..in ....rimm..isen hienoa huomata, kuinka sek.. raskaimmat ett.. kevyimm..t puolet kunnioittavat juuri 70-luvun ehtaa soundia ja vaikka s..vellyksien ....rip....t liikkuvat kaukana toisistaan, sitoutuvat ne t..ll.. tavoin yhteen jopa todella tunnelmallisilla tavoilla. Oman s..vyns.. albumille tuo toki sen kokoonpano, jota Albertin mahtavat jylh..t vokalisoinnit, Vicarin tunnistettava soundi kitaroissa, Voidin tyylitajuiset rumpuraidat ja vierailijoiden korvaamattomat s..vyt vahvistavat jatkuvasti mielenkiintoisemmilla tavoilla.

Orne kumartaa siis The Conjuration By The Firella vahvasti 70-luvun suuntaan aina albumin hillitty.. 50-minuuttista kestoa my..ten, kuulostamatta kuitenkaan mill....n tavalla v..kin..iselt.. uudelleenl..mmittelylt.., mink.. sijaan tiet..m..t..n voisi varmasti arvata albumin ilmestyneen juuri kyseisell.. vuosikymmenell... Koko The Conjuration By The Firen taian voi tavoittaa ainoastaan kuuntelemalla sen ja vaikka albumin erinomaista laatua voisi ihan hyvin kuvailla loputtomilla adjektiiveilla, kuvastaa albumia ehk.. kuitenkin paremmin se, kuinka se koostuu jatkuvasti hurmaavammista osasista, ollen kuitenkin kokonaisuutena nimenomaan osiensa summa. In The Vaultin puheintron ja utuisen akustisen n..pp..ilyn, sek.. mahtavan Lighthousen eeppisen rakenteen, tummien urkujen ja puheoutron v..lille mahtuu nimitt..in paljon kaikenlaista, mist.. on ihan turha edes yritt.... saada t..ytt.. otetta viel.. ensimm..isill.. kuunteluilla. Akustisista tunnelmoinneista aina saksofonin eroottiseen s..vyyn, jyrkk....n heavy-metalliin ja hallittuun rakenteeseen ylt..v.. A Beginning avaa varsinaisen kappalemateriaalin komeasti, esitellen samalla Ornen ominta itse....n. Lapsi....nien my..t.. tummiin tunnelmiin etenev.. Anton hurmaa hieman kevyemmill.. tunnelmilla, jotka koostuvat kuitenkin yll..tt..v..n monista tasoista. Sen sijaan Island Of Joy vie kontrastia j..lleen vaikeammaksi, mets..isien huiluin h..ystettyjen tunnelmien ja heavy-metallisten raskauksien v..limatkan ollessa melkoinen. Vastapainoksi Frontline Dreams raskautuu vasta lopussaan ja Opening By Watchtower sis..lt.... hyvin minimalistisilla tavoilla albumin syvint.. antia ennen sen eeppist.. loppua.

Koko The Conjuration By The Firesta tai sen yksitt..isist.. kappaleista tunnelmineen voisi todellakin kertoa vaikka miten paljon, mutta n..in vaikuttavan albumin kohdalla se tuntuu l..hinn.. muiden kokemusten m....rittelemiselt.. etuk..teen. Ornen kokoonpanon ydin on jo aiemmin osoittanut, miten vaikkapa doom-metallia voi tehd.. 2000-luvulla eritt..in perinteisell.. ja silti uskottavan tuoreella tavalla. Nyt The Conjuration By The Firella sama kokoonpano on tarttunut ehk.. jopa viel.. vaikeampaan aiheeseen ja tehnyt sen, mihin en ihan ..kki.. olisi itsek....n uskonut. Albumia ei tulla varmasti nostamaan niiss.. tietyiss.. piireiss.. 70- tai 80-luvun progressiivisen monis..vyisen rockin loistavien albumien rinnalle, mutta toisaalta on hieman vaikeaa keksi.. syit.., miksi n..in ei voisi tehd... Ilmestymisvuosi tuntuu The Conjuration By The Firen kohdalla l..hinn.. ilmalta, Ornen onnistuttua tavoitteessaan ....rimm..isen tyylitajuisesti. Orne ei ole tyytynyt ainoastaan poimimaan elementtej.. sielt.. ja t....lt.., vaan se tuntuu aidosti el..v..n tyylins.. ajassa, jolloin musiikin laajan kontrastin progressiivisimmat, tunnelmallisimmat ja raskaimmat ....rip....t sidotaan yhteen tinkim..tt..m..sti aikansa tyylill.., sekoittamatta mukaan hivent..k....n asiankuulumattomuuksia. Pitk....n odotettu Ornen debyytti ei pet.., sill.. se on t..ysin rehellinen ja aidosti tinkim..t..n ajankuva 70-luvun moneen kertaan menetetyist.. maisemista omalla persoonallisella tavallaan, jolloin kyse on jostain paljon suuremmasta, kuin monien harrastamasta kuivasta uudelleenl..mmittelyst...

- Aki Nuopponen

Reverend Bizarre ..kolmikon uusi b..ndi Orne ammentaa vaikutteita vanhasta Genesiksest.., Black Widowsta, Pink Floydista ja King Crimsonista ja lis.... joukkoon annoksen suomalaista melankolisuutta. B..ndin tummanpuhuvassa proge-rockissa on paljon tuttua, mutta silti se on h..mm..stytt..v..n tuoretta. Harvoin mik....n levy vie menneess....n yht.. nopeasti kuin The Conjuration by the Fire. Ornen unenomaiseen satumaailmaan ..po j....d.. pitk..ksikin aikaa. The Conjuration by the Fire on ep..lem..tt.. yksi parhaista debyyttialbumeista pitk....n aikaan.

Wow.

Klasse.

„Opening by Watchtower" klingt vom Titel her schon schr..g.

Take two third 70’s dark progressive rock a la Spring , Steel Mill, Fantasy, Necromandus , Black Widow, early Floyd, have a little Maiden and Witchfinder General or Reverend Bizarre if you want to, mix in some folk influences (ala Jethro Tull and Comus ), and ’ Fire’ , you start to get somewhere near the sound Orne make.

Orne are a project of Finnish musicians or how they listed it as ’the officers present in the temple’, brought together by Reverend Bizarre guitar player Peter Vicar, he also wrote most of the material within this CD. Opening up we get 1 minute Lovecraftian narration by imperator Patrick Walker whose evil voice is a piercing mix of Christopher ’ Saruman ’ Lee and Orson ’Dark Avenger’ Welles before "In the vault" a hazy guitar/keyboard drenched number floats in, and off I go I’m to musical underworld. Once you’ve been mesmerized by another Rev Bizarre member Sir Albert Magic Witchfinder vocals, it’s impossible to let go and step out. Albert’s vocals on "Anton" and "Lighthouse" in particular is phenomenal. The placid acoustic sections on "Island of joy" , " Frontline dreams" and "Opening by watchtower" are pushed along by flute, sax and piano, the vocals once more lifting the entire sound to an elevated stage. At times it is quite haunting and occult, evoking visions of the elder gods sealed within ancient underground places initially freeing themselves and arising from their tombs to unleash their rage on human race. Around this the arrangements always shine, offering many layers of beautiful vibratos to discover. Another thing that I like about this CD is the subtle use of piano and organs. They are not overbearing, but they definitely add the right atmosphere and a similar air of mystical pagan musical delight.

Lovers of aforementioned bands might want to look over this one, dark vibes all round, and at just over 48 minutes long this would have fitted onto a slab of vinyl just nice. The whole of this CD is inventive and absorbing, it has been such a long time since I listened to an amalgamation of sounds like these. I can only say that now after my 20th listen this appears to have gained rotation status on my CD player for a long time to come. There are just enough moments on "The conjuration by the fire" to make you realize Orne are something special. ..

Lavoro consigliato.

Orne is a solo project of Reverend Bizarre guitarist Peter Vicar (or Hierophant Kimi Kärki as he is titled here). He is accompanied by his band mates from the doom plus couple of other musicians. But the basic situation is like Reverend Bizarre would be playing something completely different. Just remember that this is Orne and nothing more, nothing less.

Well, Albert’s vocals are one of the most recognizable thing at first and his voice sure suits the mood more than well. Also the use of saxophones and flutes creates some serious chills on my back every time either of them is at present. Guitars are mainly used for picking, but there are some heavier riffs as well accompanied by organs, but mostly the playing is really mellow and dark. There are still few moments, where the band lets loose and go with the flow.

The album seems to get better and better the more you listen to it and the songs have been placed so that each one is better than the one before, but so that it is always a joy to return back to the beginning. Altogether, the album has got that special down to earth spirit and when the vocal melodies and the mood are constantly in order, you can be sure that you will enjoy every single moment like I did. A must have album, if you like dark and atmospheric, yet slightly demanding music.

New Record Releases volume 28:

Orne ( Fin) – The Conjuration By The Fire ( Black Widow) Since Pete Vicar (Kimi Kärki) and Albert Witchfinder from Reverend Bizarre fame is featured in this Finnish project I would expect a devestating old-school Doom Metal masterpiece but instead are this album a very very different story and way beyond Reverend Bizarres outrageously slambering howling sound. Ornes first album is a progressive symphonical moody piece of work. Some hints of Reverend Bizarre mainly of Alberts superb vocals and Petes awesome guitarwork but this album includes organs, flutes and saxophone and with those ingrediences I would state that The Conjuration By The Fire is placed somewhere of the early Avant-garde rock classics King Crimson, Amon Duul II, Gong, Van Der Graaf Generator to state a few names along with a more gothic progressive style. It’s a very inspiring album to listen to, thats for sure. I also find some early Pink Floyd influences in here. I see this and feel that this is a concept album even though there are 7 different stories. Looking at the lyrical side of the album I find them to be more of a poetic poems than regular lyrics. The Conjuration By The Fire is also a challenging piece of work, awesome soundpicture, I dig the variation here with all the angles of different arrangements. Orne have made a wonderful piece of disc, a marvellous travel through crimson landscapes and melancholic progressive atmospheric cosmic hymns. A essential release.

HELLRIDE MUSIC
http://www.hellridemusic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14972

All of us know and love the trinity that make up Reverend Bizarre and for those of us that do, the breakup of the band impacts the Doom Community much like the break-up of The Beatles stunned the rock world. The scale is much smaller of course, but no less impactful on legions of true fans.

But the spirit of the band lives on and will continue to do so as the spirit of the greats always do. It’s also comforting to know that talent of the musicians extend into other realms of music and the collaborations will hopefully never cease. Case in point, Kimi Kärki’s (Peter Vicar to most of us) progressive rock project, Orne.

Orne’s first official release, The Conjuration By The Fire, is epic in scope, utilizing not only Kimi’s prodigious guitar skills, but also organ, Rhodes piano, soprano saxophone, flute and various percussion instruments. No less than seven musicians contributed to the project including both Void and Albert from Reverend Bizarre. Perhaps the most compelling and outright stunning achievement worthy of accolades all on it’s own merit, is that Kimi composed each of the songs on The Conjuration…, with arrangement assistance from the contributors to the project. For those that have heard this already, this is no small feat given the complexity of the music within.

Judging from the acknowledgments section of the booklet, it’s pretty clear that Kimi is a vintage prog aficionado, because I’ve never heard of half the bands, let alone able to pronounce their names. Even with my limited background in the genre, the amalgamation that comes to mind is Foxtrot-era Genesis, crossed with first album High Tide and first album Black Widow. Expect multiple turns in mood, time signatures, structure and key with voice and all instruments doing several things at one time - all the elements that make prog what it is coupled with creativity, chemistry and superb musicianship that might propel Orne to break out of the ’prog’ tag to something even larger.

Those expecting ’heaviness’ will get it, however it comes from not so much the music itself as with the lyrical material. There are riffs no doubt, (check out midway through "A Beginning") but it’s prog, not Heavy Metal we’re talking here. However, there is a heavy, HEAVY occult inspiration and when we aren’t squirming in demonical mire, we’re weighed down in more mortal matters. Check out "Frontline Dreams", which is a masterpiece both from a musical and lyrical standpoint.

Credit must also be given to Albert, who proves what a versatile vocalist he really is. Not only is he blessed with a great voice but also the ability to emote – and emote he does on this, in ways he really couldn’t with Reverend Bizarre or The Puritan. Patrick Walker from Warning fame, does the spoken word intro and outro, with the type of voice that really ought to grace Masterpiece Theater.

I can’t recommend this enough, not only because it’s a mammoth compositional achievement but because it’s vastly different from most any current music around. Sure it gets twiddley, but that’s the hallmark of the genre! Really a musical achievement here. I expect Kimi to start scoring symphonies and soundtracks shortly.

METAL MAYHEM
http://www.metal-mayhem.co.uk/reviews/orne.html

This album was three years in the making. It was delayed by the record company due to lack of money, lawsuits over the band name and tracks were lost by the studio, but it was certainly worth the wait. The Orne is a side project of Kimi Kärki better known as Peter Vicar of doom masters Reverend Bizarre. The other two members of Reverend Bizarre also feature on this album; however they are not going to be a permanent fixture of the band line-up. Albert Witchfinder has plans to carry on with his own band, the puritan. The band in total is a seven piece featuring guitars, organs, sax, flute and more making music in the style of the darker prog bands of the 70s. The band describes themselves as, "dark progressive rock with a folk element".

The music is beautifully constructed from the band featuring many different instruments. The band plays acoustic guitar, drums, flute, saxophone, keyboards, and organ during the course of the album. The individual instruments adding layer after layer to the songs creating a wonderful overall sound. The music has a darkness surrounding it, while remaining a melancholy listen. The album compares well to the best of the 70s bands that have influenced it. Favourable comparisons to Black Widow and Genesis with Peter Gabriel and other bands like Wishbone Ash. Black Widows Clive Jones has given it his seal of approval on there website. While it is a good step away from the work done in Reverend Bizarre it is still an excellent album. The Black Sabbath influence of there work in Reverend Bizarre does rear its head from time to time during the album, but this is more about the band recreating the sound of other progressive bands of the 70s that had dark feelings about them.

Fire unifies the album from the album title, then as a running theme through the songs. In Lighthouse a creature of fire is summoned. In Opening the watchtower the watchtower is opened by fire then on frontline dreams the troops are under fire from the weapons of war. The album breaks in with the track, In the vault. This features Patrick Walker of doom band Warning. He reads out an extract of S.L. MacGregor Mathers’ translation of The Key of Solomon the King. This sets the scene perfectly for the H.P. Lovecraft inspired, In The vault. The following track, A Beginning is a black widow esque number about a semi-religious experience that Peter once had. The third track Anton is about Franz Anton Mesmer, the man responsible for the discovery of animal magnetism. Mesmer had also been a patron of the arts supposedly having given his support to a young Mozart. This would also be the bands original namesake song as prior to 2000 the band was known as Mesmer. The band changed it’s name to Orne after a H.P. Lovecraft character. However due to a lawsuit the name has since been changed to The Orne. Island of Joy is a historically inspired song about Crete and Minoan culture. Frontline Dreams has been written about the chaos in the trenches of the First World War and catches the sorrow of the event. The troops go off to die in horrific ways. The song seems to examine the futility of war why exactly they went of to do this. Lighthouse finishes off the album. It’s a dreamlike song that finishes off the album the way it started with Patrick Walker reading another extract as an outro to end the album.

I’d recommend this album to any fans of 70s prog fans or Reverend Bizarre, while it is different from they do it is still excellent and I feel would still appeal to there fans. With the demise of Reverend Bizarre this band is one to carrying on enjoying

PROGLOG AFTERGLOW

http://www.progopinion.blogspot.com/

Waardering: (3 uit max. 5 JoJo’s)

’Orne’ is een fictieve persoon in H. P. Lovecraft’s (1890-1937) ’The Case of Charles Dexter Ward’.
"Fire is the element of power, it consumes but also create, it is always restless, always hungry. Hail victory, hail ever-burning Rosicrucian lamps and watchtowers of the elements. Amen!".

There is a Finnish family called Orne. They have expressed their wish that I would change the band name to something different. I have now decided to change it to The Orne. If this will not be enough, there might be a trial coming up.

I have consulted several lawyers about this, and a professor of name law. It seems that I should not be afraid of facing this threat of a trial. Let's see what the future brings.

I will quite soon write a disclaimer where I will make it clear that this band and the choosing of the name has nothing to do with their family / house.

THE CONJURATION BY THE FIRE IS OUT!!!
Tuesday, July 18, 2006

Category: Music
We started as a drums - guitars -duo with Void. The year was 2003.

Thursday 6th November, 2003

Drumsounds. Void felt he lacked any feeling towards playing and felt it technically difficult too, so we decided to start the actual recordings in Saturday. The actual drumsound that was accomplished is very dry and 1970s like. I like it, and am sure that when we add echoes, etc., it will be just perfect. Void, then again, prefers the more heavy drumsound that was done for A Beginning demo. It had almost stadium band qualities... That sound was great in its own right, but I haven't been sure if that's the perfect drumsound for ORNE... so... regression to old sounds is the name of the game.

Saturday 8th November, 2003

"In the Vault" guitar (acoustic), some guitar effects, drums. "A Beginning" drums, guitars for light parts, demoguitars for heavy parts. "Anton" drums, demoguitars (this one needs really accurate guitarplaying).

A long day, but a lot was accomplished. Void seemed to be in doubt about the sound solutions of "In the Vault". The demoversion had blurred, almost foggy and very dreamy electric guitar arpeggio pattern. This time I used acoustic steel guitar, with which I tried to strive towards some kind of Ennio Morricone feeling. The second mic input (space mic) will surely be mixed and effected in this weird psychedelic way, but one guitar track will remain clean and precise.

"A Beginning" was quite easy one. The 2nd oldest song of the album and definitely the one which was played the most. Can't remember any real troubles with this one... Void can correct me here if my memory fails me.

"Anton" was hard to play, but we managed to get quite good drum take. Guitars were not as good, those will be re-recorded.

Monday 10th November, 2003

"Island of Joy" drums, guitar for light parts. Demoguitar for heavy parts.

Four and half hours of a five minute song... The fast parts had some really tricky parts for Void, and he really wants to get the best out of him. I counted perhaps four or five perfect sounding takes, which then had one kick drum in a wrong place. Quite frustrating, but somehow it started to feel fun towards the end. The final version has great ending, but it lacked perhaps the ultimate tom tom fills some versions had. Still sounded phenomenal in parts, and timing should be ok too (perhaps the two fast parts have slightly different tempo, though).

We will continue today with "Frontline Dreams" and hopefully "Opening by Watchtower" also.

Tuesday 11th November, 2003

"Island of Joy" drums for the last part re-recorded.

"Frontline Dreams" drums, guitar for light parts, demoguitar for heavy parts.

This took a long time to get it right.

The song has basically two parts, a peaceful one and a heavy one. We had problems with both. My fingertips are sore from playing endlessly the same chord progressions... Void was complaining the pains he got to his feet from playing "Island of Joy". Also his arms were somewhat tired, we had to put one "Island of Joy.. tom tom on a separate track, as he was not able to play it anymore with everything (lots of stuff going on) else.

Wednesday 12th November, 2003

"Opening by Watchtower" drums, demoguitars.

Quite a torture here, used a click-track throughout except in the end. There were some places in the song that need really storming drums, and we finally succeeded to have a take that Void was (almost) happy with. Just in time to end the sessions...

So, now we only lack drums for "Lighthouse". That one will take place Thurstady the 20th November.

15th Nov some really bad news:

I knew this was too easy this time.

Paappa "vitun mmmikoura" Venho called me last evening and told me had had accidentally deleted three of the already recorded songs. This means we will have to record "In the Vault", "A Beginning", and "Opening by Watchtower" all over again. Paappa will of course take no payment of the lost time, and I will fucking make sure he will give some extra studio time to ease my anger.

A curse? Sure... The wandering jew is still haunting, it seems.

So, Void, it seems I will have to do some guitars in Thursday. There is another band in Friday, so it's not wise to put drums up for the little stint. I'll do some of the guitars instead, the definitive versions, and the intro again...

Thursday the 20th Nov
I did one little session alone, it was . Recorded the intro AGAIN and final guitar for Anton.

2004

Thursday the 19th Feb.

The Snail creeps onward again...

Antti Fredriksson recorded bass guitar for these songs:
In the Vault
Anton
Island of Joy
Frontline Dreams
Opening by Watchtower

...and did a splendid and fast job I must say!

Tane gave us wrong information: it was not "Opening by Watchtower" that was deleted, but "Frontline Dreams" (and, as stated earlier, also "In the Vault", and "A Beginning" were destroyed, the first one has now been re-recorded with guitars and bass on).

This makes things easier for Void, I hope... So, the next sessions will be 8th, 9th, and 10th March. Void will do the drums for "In the Vault", "A Beginning", and "Lighthouse". It is possible we will do live cut with bass, guitar, and drums for "Lighthouse", and IF we get a chance to rehearse, perhaps all of these three!

Monday the 8th March.

Mostly drum sounds, and we also managed to play A Beginning almost through.

Tuesday the 9th March.

Great work!!! The basstakes are indeed finished, and all is left after this day for drums are two small takes. Then I'll do the rest of my guitars.

Just hope we will be able to book more time and soon. When the guitars are finished, I will take the basic tracks home and listen them through.

Then it's only those guitar parts by Pekka, keyboards, vocals, flutes, and saxes. Easy...

Wednesday the 10th March

A bad day for a change... the fucking digital tracker had collapsed after we left the builiding in Tuesday, changing the position of the snare track in Lighthouse... should be retrieveable, though... miracle man Pena Dassum will take a look at it later. Orhervise we will use the snaresound leaking from other mics, but then we will not be able to effect it too much.

Then we discovered there were timing problems with the basstrack of Opening by Watchtower. They are so bad that some tom hits by Void appeared to be late -- will have to either lose some of the tom hits or effect them very heavily. Now recorded guitars are more or less in sync with the basslines. Most of the people will not probably hear or care about the stuff I'm talking about here.

Void did the small percussion parts to In the Vault, and I recorded the acoustic guitars to Opening by Watchtower and to the choruses of Lighthouse.

The drums in the last section of Frontline Dreams, recorded in Tuesday, appeared to be just great, so they were left there (and Void will probably reply to this that those takes were not too good, but ok when compared to Opening by Watchtower).

Sill on the makings list:
guitars:
* all of the heavy metal parts (A Beginning, Frontline Dreams, Opening by Watchtower)
* normal guitars (A Beginning, Frontline Dreams... maybe Island of Joy, will have to listen that through)
* Pekka's parts (which I will record if the man will not be able to show up)
vocals: all
keyboards and Rhodes piano: all
flutes and saxes: all
* mixing
* mastering

There HAS been some progress. I've been so fucking busy with my dayjob I haven't been able to write here. But shortly:

Monday the 3rd May
A guitar day. I was able to play all of the Heavy Metal guitars.

Tuesday the 4th May
Another guitar day. Most of the remaining clean guitar takes are now done. Since Pekka, the other guitarist, was not able to show for some reason, I did some of his parts as well, leaving some decorations and one solo to be filled later.

Then we did a rough mix of the basic tracks with drums, bass, and guitars. As Void says, I'm guite happy with the results so far... And Void's drums will get even better when we mix and master this fucker. No worries there...

Monday 6th September
Tuesday 7th September

We did all of the organ and piano parts... Hammond, Rhodes and Wrlizer sounds... and fucking hell I am happy with the result!!! Some of the sounds could be from Uriah Heep's classic album Demons and Wizards... I dare to say this will be an excellent album.

All we need now are the flutes, saxes and vocals, then it's the time to mix and master. Next studio days are 20th and 21th October.

Thursday 21st October

Today the soprano saxes were recorded for "A Beginning" and "Anton". Flutes for "Island of Joy" and "Frontline Dreams". Tomorrow still flutes for "Opening by Watchtower" and "Lighthouse".

Void can tell you more if he wishes. I was able to be there for two hours only. Tane had said he'd have everything ready in the morning... well he arrived late and it took an hour to get the songs and the mic ready... the usual troubles with the fucking digital tracker (oh how I have learned to hate that machine...).

Void: I won't be there tomorrow, I leave the Town in the morning. But I called Tane and gave him instructions (Flutes in "Lighthouse" only to those two choruses, and that fast part at the end of "Opening by Watchtower" just as in the pre-production demo... Rest of "Opening" is ready if I understood right from Tane). IF you won't make it tomorrow, I guess Tane should know what to do. Big cheers for Void for doing the supervising today and hopefully tomorrow morning!

Tane promised to let me and Albert know about the possible dates for vocals and mixing. Everything should be ready for mastering in November.

Finally light at the end of this tunnel.

Void / Jay added:

Hah, of course he didn't follow the demo 100%, no one could do that with practically no practice. At the studio today I realised what we should have done: we should have notated the sax/flute passages for the chap, not just play him the demo and tell to do exactly the same. You know, those original "solos" by mr Crazypants are pretty freaky at times. So, with the limited time and limited possibilities, we did what we could. Not necessarily always the best possible solutions, but I hope you are satisfied. I think I will be. And at least this guy plays million times better than mr Crazypants.

Oh, we already did the end of Opening as well, but since it isn't as good as it could have been, we'll fix it up first thing tomorrow morning. So only Lighthouse really left. However, against your specific instructions, I'm going to ask for some diabolical trills or something at the end of the spoken word/"drum solo" part. Could add to the dynamic structure there, yes yes, could add could add!

Wednesday the 1st December

Already wrote on that. One guitar for "Anton", vocals for "Anton" and "Island of Joy".

Thursday the 2nd December

A hard and long day, but the vocals Albert did for "Opening by Watchtower" and "Lighthouse" are phenomenal.

Received the spoken intro and outro from my brother Patrick Walker. They are Godly, pure and simple, and will add great depth to the whole album.

This was a hard day also because of the death of Hermanni. R.I.P.

Today we will do the rest of the songs: "Frontline Dreams", "A Beginning", choral takes to "In the Vault", and some addings to the spoken outro with Daniel helping us as well.

Albert added:

The vocals are completed now. I just have to do few parts for the intro later.
Yesterday was the hardest day I have ever had in the studio. During the session I got a call about Hermanni's condition and then we went to the vet. When Hermanni was taken away for the needle we both cried so much. I felt totally ruined. But I had to return to studio. I didn't want to...and in some ways I feel I did wrong to go there...but I didn't want to let Peter down either. So I bought six pack and returned and did the vocals. Just concentrating harder than ever even when I was in sorrow so hard. I was also VERY tired.

Today was a hard one too, because of my tiredness. I had been reading for few hours, then I went to doctor because of my heart condition, then I had exam of ethnology and then went to studio for a long day. I was of course still upset too. But now I feel calm as the thing has been done. I can have some rest.

This Orne thihng was truly a hell to do because of all these many things and obstacles but I am glad I did it. One day I will remember so much when listening to these songs. I guess it was during recording of "Conjuration..." that I had to say good bye to my friend. The latter part has been done with holding the tears. Maybe you will hear it. Or maybe you hear the anger and power.

2005

Monday the 3rd of January

Today we managed to mix "Anton", "Island of Joy", "Opening by Watchtower", and "In the Vault". Rather good rate, I'd say. And sounds a lot better than I had expected. A lot. Damn. Sounds really good.

Tomorrow we'll do the rest, and then, from Wednesday onwards, get back to Crush the Insects.

Tuesday the 4th January

Mixed the spoken intro, "Lighthouse", "Frontline Dreams" and "A Beginning". What a day... we started around 3pm and were done 1am. "Lighthouse" took five hours to mix, a new record I think for us...

A long but fruitful day it was. Void dumpster-dived a great Saarioisten Perhepizza for me and Tane, and some cucumber, bread, etc. for himself... there is still one Pizza for Albert as well for todays Reverend Bizarre session... that's the way! Dracula pills were needed again as well.

There seems to be enough money for two separate masters at Finnvox. We need to figure some things out still, but I'm hopeful...

24th May

Tomorrow we finally master this fucker at Finnvox!

End of studio diary, hope you enjoyed...
