Current mood:  busy
Category: Music
… but that doesn't mean that CRB hasn't been busy! Since our last blog entry, we've played a whole bunch of cool gigs. Some highlights:

- The Teddi Dance for Love at St. John Fisher was a great time. We played toward the beginning of the 24-hour dance marathon and we thought the college kids might conserve their energy, knowing they had more than 20 hours of dancing ahead of them. No way! We were pleasantly surprised to see how much they got into classic rock, and sang along with a lot of our songs. They danced the whole time -- what a great crowd!

- The Cobbles School Ice Cream Social has become an annual event for us, because a lot of our kids go to school there. The kids were a blast -- they were thrilled that we even played a Miley Cyrus tune for them.

- Outdoor summer gigs are our favorite kind of gig, and we played a bunch in the summer of 2008: the Moonlight Concert Series at the Fairport Gazebo, some cool private parties, Wickham Farms in Penfield, and Under the Sun & Stars YMCA benefit at Powder Mill park. The YMCA benefit goes down as being literally the hottest gig we played -- the temperature was in the 90s and we were in the direct sun. But we got some decent video from the gig (at least in terms of sound) and some of those songs are now on YouTube. Check them out if you haven't already!

- THE LANDING!!!! We had our first gig at The Landing in Fairport in May -- it was a blast. The place was packed, and stayed that way until we were done close to 2 a.m. The owner was thrilled -- he was surprised that a lot of his "regulars" stuck around until closing. We are back at The Landing -- this time on a Saturday -- on October 18! Be there -- it will be a great time!

Current mood:  optimistic
All of us in CRB are parents, and we're fortunate to have healthy kids. That's why we're happy to be playing at this weekend's gig, the Teddi T Dance for Love. The dance benefts Camp Good Days & Special Times, a camp for kids and families affected by cancer and other troubles. The Dance -- did we mention it's 24 hours long? -- has raised more than $500,000 for the camp in the past 26 years. By the way, we're not playing for 24 hours. Just an hour or so, starting at 9:30 on Friday. And here's a bit of trivia: Joe, our drummer, played in that first dance some 26 years ago. If you have a spare 24 hours and a lot of energy, come join us!

Here's a link to the event Web site. They will be posting live updates so if you're couch potatoes, maybe you can check out the pictures, take pity on the dancers with sore feet, and send them a contribution.

Current mood:  cheerful
We had a great time last night playing at Jukestock 2008 at the Jukebox in Spencerport. We debuted a couple of new songs -- "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Me & Bobby Magee" and they went over well. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch!

The other bands - Farmship, Shidoobees, Dan Frank & the True Believers, and Jaded Lady - all did an awesome job. It was a really good mix of music.

Now we're working on some tunes that are made for dancing -- some old favorites and some new ones -- for the Teddi T Dance Marathon in February.

Update from Lee Starr,

I just got home from Jim's with the completed demo. Things went well and we had fun working together on this project. We think it came out very nicely.  Honestly, I don't think the mix can get much better. We put a lot of time into it and it rocks. I believe this is a good representation of our sound.

When CRB started (just about a year ago), we quickly assembled a drummer, a keyboard player, a lead guitar player, acoustic guitar players, singers ... but no bass player. We asked everyone we could think of in search of a bass player who wanted to play the kind of music we had in mind, and who lived in or around Penfield. No luck.

Finally, Lee called his good friend, Jim Bareis, an excellent bass player who lives in Brockport (known to us as the Town of Far, Far Away), and asked if he would pitch in. Jim, being an amiable, music-loving fellow, agreed ... with the proviso that we continue to look for a bass player that lived nearby.

During the following months, Jim was more to us than just a temp bass player. He had an astute ear for when a song wasn't grooving quite right. He hauled tons of sound gear to practices and gigs. He was host to one of our more fun practices (ok, it was mostly a jam session) in his house in the Town of Far, Far Away. He was relentless in his quest to get our sound right (not an easy task with our seven instruments and five singers). And most importantly, he became a good friend to the rest of us.

A few weeks ago, Jim told us that as much as he's enjoyed his stint with CRB, the commute was really ... too far away. Plus he wanted to focus on his other musical endeavors. To be blunt, the dude quit.

As luck would have it, Lee met a guy named Dave Catalfo at a party. Dave mentioned that he was a musician ... and Lee mentioned that we needed a bass player. Dave was into the music we were playing, lived nearby, and played bass! He even had a son at Cobbles Elementary School, where most of the band's kids go to school. It was a match made in ... well, Penfield.

So right now we're spending some time breaking in our new bass player and getting ready to record our demo ... which leads us back to Jim in the Town of Far, Far Away. But that's another blog entry.

Until then, welcome Dave ... and thanks a million, Jim.

CRB played two fun gigs in September -- a BBQ cook-off in Leroy, NY, and the Kidney Walk in Seneca Park.

We always like gigs that feed us, so the BBQ cook-off was a great one! It was also cool to hang out with and listen to other area bands. Special thanks to the guys in "Closing Time" for all their help with our sound.

The Kidney Walk gig was the first-ever early morning gig for many of us. The votes are out as to whether or not we want more of those! But it was a great cause and a great day. Kudos to all the walkers!

During the next few months, we'll be recording a demo and adding lots of great new songs to our playlist. If you want to hear about upcoming gigs, subscribe to our blog!
