The Leatherettes @ The Doghouse (Go North Festival) Dundee 06/06/08
I ran across to The Doghouse for this one. I'd been telling everyone who'd asked where I'd be at this time - there was only ever going to be one choice and that was for this band. I'd not seen them live for ages - in fact it may have been the last time Dead Earnest put them on at the Westie. I arrived just as they were starting the set, only to be blown away on a visual level before I'd even heard any of the set. First off Becca was sporting a new hairdo - black and decidedly the gangster's moll - you'd have forgiven her if she'd been wielding a gun rather than a guitar - wearing this tight mid-length dress and yet moving around that stage with venom attacking her electric guitar with purpose and letting out this awesome vocal that set the nerve ends jangling and the hairs standing up on the back of your neck. Meanwhile, co-electric guitarist Johnny - yes, just two cats on guitars - resplendent in suit was unleashing a howl of fuzz guitar over the pre-set electro-percussive programmed rhythms. A bit like a mix of early Siouxsie & The Banshees crossed with biting Jesus & Mary Chain stripped down but roaring with the energy of The Ramones, this was something that took you by the throat and refused to let go. They dedicated the second number to the recently departed Bo Diddley, called it "Bonnie Diddley" and hammered out this raging hook of a riff on the guitars with beefy rhythms as the song just scorched out of the PA, Becca's vocals becomeing ever more potent and powerful. With red hot song following red hot song, they went onto cover a Vaselines track with a vocal performance that revealed they can do commercial and even make that work too. The next track was red hot and on fire with bursts of electric guitar breaks as the vocal howls out and the chorus is decidedly infectious while the rhythm and riffing positively takes the roof off. It's solid, heavy and astonishingly stunning with Becca's vocal soaring, powerful and furnace hot. What follows has you jaw-droped as Becca downs the guitar to do just vocal and, over the fuzz riffing and electric squall of Johnny's guitar and the solid driving electro-percussive rhythm, and she just explodes with a vocal performance that is decidedly electrifying and simply awesome as she delivers the line "we're gonna break down barriers" while kicking the shit out of the actual barriers at the front of the stage. It all sears through your skull with electric intensity while the whole audience is by now leaping about and the whole scene is just amazing. A slower, more deliberate song follows that seems almost commercial by comparison, but flows and drives just the same. All that and more produced one wild and absolutely nuclear set from just two guitarists, a vocalist who sends shivers down your spine while still remaining in tune and crushingly powerful, who took control and had you transfixed from start to finish. A visual as well as an aural treat, this was mesmerising, astounding and utterly incredible stuff. "Wanted to see more factor" (out of ten) - there's not a number high enough!!

COME IN EARTH...
Hi martians and leatherette-ettes
Its been a while since an update so we kicked ourselves up the arse and it seemed to do the trick.
We are busy working on a whole new set of material and will be recording a 7 inch in the next few months.
We are also recruiting a 3rd member in the shape of a drummer so things are all changing and expect a fucking explosion!
We also found out we are appearing in a Rock Documentary due for release this year, oooh the shame.
In other news, we have been busy starting up a new club night called FEVER which is fortnightly in Dundee. The only Rock-A-Rama Bop in town! In other words, the Fonz's favourite hangout.
More updates very soon we pretty pretty pretty promise!

Dirtblonde / Leatherettes
White Noise, Rubber Heart /Jet Black And Bleached
The split album harks back to earlier times, a cheap and effective way to promote bands with similar ideals, if not sounds (my favourite being Kill Rock Stars pairing of Huggy Bear and Bikini Kill) in order to promote a sense of kinship, of a loose scene. Both Dirtblonde and Leatherettes also evoke back to an era (largely imagined) when music was rawer, sleazier, less accommodating to mainstream assimilation. In short, generally good, dumb fun. Both bands trade in rudimentary drumbeats, filthy riffs, feedback and untrained, raucous female vocals. Most of the twelve songs here are short, sharp shocks, often dissolving into a chaos of noise.
Dirtblonde open proceedings with two prime examples of nasty, primitive garage-punk-pop in the forms of 'The Hangman' and 'Snow White'. So far, so good, but things take a more inventive twist. 'Call It Art' is more nuanced with its lone guitar, heartbeat bass drum and lonesome voice intoning 'I should be getting older / But I can't'. 'His Name' lifts/borrows/steals from Patti Smith's 'Horses' right down to the phrasing – 'The train keeps coming' – but it kinda feels like the Raincoats playing homage with its rough, intuitive musicianship. It's a pretty effective and engaging tribute right down to its play on the 'Gloria' section of 'Horses', itself a homage to Van Morrison's Them. 'You Wanna Be Me' is good, snotty fun, rough as fuck with a fantastic, simple riff and some caveman drumming, climaxing in a huge, filthy guitar driven ending. Dirtblonde finish off with 'Teenage Bride', a Crampsy riff topping off a cool maelstrom of noise along with lyrics straight from the school of Iggy/Psychocandy: 'Give my eyes / Give my eyes / For a switchblade knife / Down, down, down… Give my life / Give my life / For a teenage bride', but it's rather cool, with some nice touches. Dirtblonde's album starts enjoyably, albeit predictably, enough, but the last four songs are great. Twisted geniuses in the making.
Dundee duo, Leatherettes, have been scaring and enthralling live audiences over the last year or so. They employ similar tools to Dirtblonde; rudimentary percussion, jagged guitars and raw vocals but Bekka's voice has a real sense of edginess to it. 'Asylum' builds into a good chorus though the production sounds a little subdued forcing me to turn up the volume several notches. 'Shoot To Thrill' is pure, unadulterated bratty punk-pop with its howled vocal, razor sharp guitar and basic but effective beats. Bekka sounds out on a limb as she yells 'I wanna break down barriers' before launching into the biting but playful chorus:
You got a pistol You shoot to kill I've got a 45 I shoot to thrill.
Leatherettes are truly in love with the trashier end of pop culture. '66 Miles' sounds like an unholy alliance of Suicide with guitars and T-Rex on bad drugs. 'Mickey and Minnie' is such a wonderful, catchy dumb song reimagining the much loved cartoon characters as the stars of a contemporary version of Badlands as Bekka screams and squawks 'Run, run away with me little Mickey / Rock, rock away with me little Minnie'. 'Telephone Wires' sees the introduction of a bass guitar. Oh the sell-outs. And it clocks in at just over five minutes, which, in the world of the Leatherettes is akin to prog-rock. In reality though 'Telephone Wires' has a cool groove interspersed with economical bursts of guitar and a desperate, panicked sounding vocal. Final song, 'You Stole The Fuck' still reminds me obtusely of the Lounge Lizards weird take on "Money' with its curious rhythm track and scratchy guitar in the chorus, especially in the sparse 'You stole the fuck from me / So fuck me some more' passages. Leatherettes are… well more twisted geniuses really.
Dirtblonde and Leatherettes operate in a twilight world where the canonical bands are not the Beatles or Beach Boys and their heirs but the Cramps, 60s garage punk, The Stooges, Pussy Galore, The Kills, mid 70s New York punk. An imagined place where music can offend and inspire not simply end up as incidental music in a mall or on football highlights. And for this, and their winning ways with the primitive, primeval riff and hook, I salute them. Turn up the treble and pass the amphetamine please!

The Leatherettes 'Johnny Thunders' EP.
We must get our act together and get around to writing up the promised review for their stunning split album release with Dirtblonde but hell we are having so much fun getting down and dirty with it that we've forgotten the real purpose as to why it was sent to us in the first place.
This EP features four slices of caustic DIY gnarled shade wearing, hip hugging fuzz pop from Dundee's premier dislocated duo Becca and Johnny - minimalist primal scuzzy boogie for all is what you get for the asking. 'Johnny Thunders' the opener sounds not unlike an over excited Fay Fife doing her best Debbie 'X Offender' Harry impersonation while fronting the Ramones, the frayed and stripped to the bone production though not as bargain basement as the Mummies yet not far off adds to the edge.
The dirtily fraught 'Born bad' with its slinky side winding riffs and pouting fuck you demeanour is a bearing down vibrant slice of gritty fuzzed out and mutated three chord candy pop that sounds to these ears as though it was fathered by early career Suicide.
'Mickey and Minnie' provides for a spot of saccharine laced stutter boogie, furiously feisty and the best thing here - a kind of ASBO waving half cousin of Toni Basil's 'Mickey' fronting off, happy slapping and whipping the Shangri-La's to drag them kicking and screaming through a hedge backwards.
Last and by no means least - 'Betty Danger' pick pockets the Steve Jones trademarked Pistols power chords and has it firing the under the hood cylinders of a dragster demolition derby entrant - imagine early career Mono Men and Ministry collaborating to cut their chops on Eddy Cochran's 'Something else' - well cool. Available to download 18th June.

The Leatherettes - Jet Black And Bleached
DUNDEE is on fire. The View, The Law and now The Leatherettes have arrived to burn holes in your brain. The duo of Johnny Yen and singer Becca Bomb create stripped backed fuzzed up guitar noize. A mix of The Cramps and The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Leatherettes are everything we need in music. Songs like Shoot To Kill with Becca's voice sounding like it's been squeezed through a radio are simple psychobilly, just guitar and drum machine. but with lyrics such as 'you've got a pistol/I've got a gun/you've got a 45/you're not the only one', Becca has as much attitude as Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie. Jet Black And Bleached is out now. Their Johnny Thunders EP is also a free download from www.filthylittleangels.com The Leatherettes play Box, Glasgow tonight (June 22) and West Port Bar, Dundee next Friday, June 29.
