News & some reflections on 2009: 

Simple Simon:  Hell freezes over is so 1950's of a term...  Regardless, in the summer of 2009, something to that liking happened, and the Simons (Simple Simon) hit the studio.  Since then, some tweaking, more recording, and as of December 13, they have been busy mixing what we'll tentaively call "record number six".  They've also hit tape (tape?) in a marathon December one-day recording session (17 songs!) for what we'll tentatively call "record number seven"
 
The long time rock and rollers are in prime form, or as it says on their myspace: "Older, seasoned and way the f**k cockier"  Uh huh.  That being said, the music is hostile, explosive, yet melodic and, um,  tender.  Tender?  Never.   Rock and roll in true Simon form is what it is and always be, and they are very excited for you to hear it.

Packaged, sonic reproductions for one of said tentatively titled "records" will be available in LIMITED PRESSINGS for the music enthusiast in early 2010.  The quick goal is to have some for House Of Blues, Chicago show on 2/13/2010.
Javelinas on Hiatus - It ain't over till the fat lady sings, and if you hadn't noticed, Javelinas are men. They had a great run with Dirtbath and and even better run with Seven Sisters, with some great new music being crafted up the pipe.  We know the break is necessary, however anxiously look forward to some sparks out of their camp in 2010.  Details will follow.

Frosting - 2009 was a year of legal red tape for finishing the debut record.  Without letting the cat out, some clearance was necessary.  All is done, record is mixed, and Frosting are in artwork phase.  2010 release is definite.  Look for the beginning of potential Frosting live shows - yes LIVE band shows, in 2010.  Details to follow.

In the Kentland world, we lost two "unsung heroes" of the entertainment world.  Rick Sullivan (soundman of Bally Doyle Downers Grove), and Jim Krzak, (musician and respected Chicagoland magician.)

Life is really short - and in Spiv's eyes, no time for pussy-footin' around. Rock and roll, as anything in life, has it's ebbs and flows.  I vow to make things happen, record music, play shows, and try to remain positive in an industry that often dumps bags of crap at the Kentland doorstep at every turn.

Oh, I just got new boots, so bring on the crap.

Hey world of Kentland!  SPIV here!

Sending out a quick blog from the bowels of the Kentland rock and roll machine.  I've been in Madison, WI the last few days, mixing some fine rock and roll - take a breath - The first new music to come out of the Simple Simon camp in 10 long years!!

Exciting times, indeed!

On the books, to look forward to:  Simple Simon has a couple of 2010 shows:  a nice warm-up jam @ the comfy confines of Chicago's Elbo Room on Fri. Jan 8, 2010, then - bringing out the big guns at House Of Blues, Chicago on Sat, Feb 13,  with their good friends, the Lovehammers. ...You'll want to get your tickets in advance...

Where the hell is the FROSTING record already?  Let's just say there's been some kinks in the fabric, all of which the super hot Kentland Iron has pressed right back into those big pants.  So, the release date has been pushed back - look for spring, 2010.  Of course - details to follow..

In the meantime, there are always scattered members of the Kentland family sweating it out in the sometimes mundane, sometimes seen as "taboo" restaurant/bar/cover music scene.  Nonetheless, it entertaining as all hell.

The Frosting Collaborative has shortened the band name to "FROSTING".  Been dealing with a tad of legalities over the past 2 months, but the record is MIXED and MASTERED.  Artwork is in the post scribble stage, and the makings of an actual BAND are in the works.  Details as they come along!

What the hell is a GINA GLOCKSEN BAND?  Well long time KENTLAND cohort, Kris Gutrich (Simple Simon, Blackmaker) has joined Her new band.  Most of you probably know who Gina is but if you don't she is an accomplished singer who was on season 6 of American Idol. She SMOKES.  The begining shows will be predominatley cover shows with some of her new songs to boot... and the scales are in the beginnings of leaning the other way!  Rock on with that...  The website is http://www.rocktheglock.com/>

Anyway, Spiv here.  It's been a while now, hasn't it!  Yes, our hearts are still beating, and we're alive and well here in KENTLAND.


KENT: A past tense and a past participle of ken.  KEN: knowledge, understanding, or cognizance; mental perception: an idea beyond one's ken.
LAND: (noun) a realm or domain: the land of the living. (Verb)(one version) to come to rest or arrive in a particular place, position, or condition

JAVELINAS, for undisclosed reasons, have cancelled a whole slew of shows and are amidst a "rebuilding" period.  Chris and Spiv can be seen doing scattered low-key acoustic shows in the meantime...  Have no fear, the fire is high and there are many many new songs coming up the pipe.  Stay tuned.  FYI, excuse me, but I just found a blog review from a well respected punk online zine (punkrocktheory.com) that was posted back in  2/08 about Javelinas Seven Sisters::  http://punkrocktheoryzine.blogspot.com/2008/02/javelinas-seven-sisters.html


SIMPLE SIMON has landed a somewhat historic show  - The REUNION SHOW  of a Chicagoland 1980's METAL staple dive/club "The Thirsty Whale".  The Simons DID play "The Whale" a few times back in the day, as well as pre-Simon days.  The "reunion" venue is Shark City in Glendale Hts. Il. The date is 10/24/09.  Read about it in the IE - promotion is all over the place. . Nay-sayers fuck off.  This will be a blast - DOZENS of re-united bands from that rare era of Chgo hard rock will converge and throw it down on two stages all day and all night long...


BLACKMAKER has thrown some new / "vintage" songs from the archive that haven't seen the light of day in some time up on the myspace. "Way It Seems, Cult Divine, How does it feel, Tired".  Cool stuff that was never released.  So, enthusiasts - Check it out: Go visit at www.myspace.com/blackmaker.  They will be adding new unheard clips, photos, etc over time!


 
Spiv has joined yet another money maker to assist the "machine" - a cover/tribute band called PettyCash. www.pettycashband.com   The band plays Tom Petty and Johnny Cash all night long. All of the members have their hands in various "original" music projects, and will further continue those.  Pettycash is a venue to make some cash, build some camaraderie, and bang heads/swap ideas/ collaborate in the future with regards to making rock and roll music with like minded-motivated musicians that will do what it takes in the big picture of independent music to make things happen. Some notable friends are in the mix:  Matt  Friscia (Firetone Records, Poster Children, Team Rockit), Spiv (um... you know Spiv)  Caroline Kovas (Carolina, Tin horse), Tony Sansone (the Tony Sansone Experiment).  First show will be at  Real Time Sports in Elk Grove Vil. IL, 9/25/09

All hail the town of Munster IN.  They have sucessfully transformed the once mundane "blues fest" vibe, and deemed the new Munster Music fest "Edgy and varietal".  Chicagoland fans of JAVELINAS - it's only a 30-40min drive depending on your logistics to this festival just south of Lake Michigan.

Here's their pitch:
Experience a wide variety of music to include classic rock, country, punk rock, R&B, disco and folk songs at the Munster Music Festival, July 10-12 at Centennial Park.  Formerly the Blues, Jazz & Fine Arts Festival, the NEW Munster Music Festival will feature popular local groups and bands from Nashville and the East Coast.

Rock on with that.  Although Nashville and the East Coast are musical, pretty, hip  and all that, MMF has made a wise decision to inject their fest with some straight up rock and roll/americana/punk and a little F**k you with the stellar addition of JAVELINAS.

No worse than a bad day in Chgo traffic to get there - make the trek, catch the show!

Rock on!

Kentland News!  Simple Simon had a successful recording bout, the first time in about 10 years!  As planned, the lads begun the exciting task of tracking, first, 10 songs from the post King EP writing sessions.  Intentions are to keep tape rolling throughout summer 2009, with a dual focus of finally recording the unrecorded past, as well as inking fresh ROCK!  Exciting times!

Javelinas in writing mode as well.  I had the pleasure of sitting in on the last Javelinas rehearsal - be ready to feast your ears on some great new music this summer!
