"Mistress, Reptile Mistress! may already be familiar to some, having been previously sold as a CD-R exclusively at United Fruit's shows. However, this fully mastered version - released on She Said Records, a fledgling new Glasgow-based independent, and featuring previous single Shake as a bonus track - is a must for current fans and curious ears alike, with all five tracks serving as the perfect introduction to one of Glasgow's most exciting new acts. From the frantic smashing of drums on opener Push it, to the grooving experimentation of Final Test, this EP bears an intelligence and glaring rawness which challenges rock convention, yet is short and powerful enough to catch your attention and crawl under your skin. Inspired by the experimental stylings of Sonic Youth and Shellac, while remaining refreshingly original, this is an effort worth investigating."

"United Fruit are a dynamic, assertive and thunderous quartet. They are neither insular nor malnourished in sound. United Fruit will leave you almost hot-headed after every song you listen to.
The ‘Mistress, Reptile, Mistress!’ EP is something
quite significant. Glasgow is producing some of it’s most exciting
music to date and this EP pulls the trigger and fires United Fruit into the core of it.
The initial track ‘Push It’ wields an antagonistic
streak, it may not sound melodic to some in birth however, as the track
progresses it produces an addictive attitude of fury that you just want
to live repeatedly. The melodies become apparent through a masterfully
played guitar and I found myself skipping back sections to listen to
with hunger.
‘Shake’ will
always be the track that lifts me with excitement. It has a lusty
prowess but manages to throw out sonic licks. It builds several furious
guitar blowouts and drums of bloodied turmoil. It’s vocals are produced
by a man with control over the fire in his chest and the passion in his
veins. It is gloriously fervid.
From start to finish this EP delivers. It is a cavalcade of massive
percussion and desperate shredding guitars. I cannot fault this in any
sense and my only regret is that I cannot listen to it more than I
already have. United Fruit have produced an EP that has sewn seeds of
their potential and it is going to grow into something of epic yet
effortless proportions." Halina Rifai - Glasgow PodcART - August 2009 http://www.glasgowpodcart.com/?p=1544#more-1544

"Rather urgently abrasive five track EP from this immediate Glasgow four piece. Tightly wound jagged guitars and new wave post hardcore angular hardcore noise-rock goodness that bites down hard.. .Reptile Mistress indeed, a demanding sound, a wired sound, all creeping in from different angles and gooseberries jarring with blackberries and lemons and bananas and experimental visceral intensity and we like this lots... all discordant and jagged and nagging at your head to eat your oranges and your Fugazi and your Shellac and your Mclusky and... yes... go grab your united fruit, five a day needed, obey your mistress, strenght of character."
Organ Magazine - 19 July 2009 http://www.organart.demon.co.uk/
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"United
Fruit are one of a bunch of weird, heavy-ish rock bands currently
weirding out Glasgow, alongside No Kilter, Ex Wives , Holy Mountain and
Bronto Skylift, who they've done a split 7" with. This is the first EP
from the four-piece, although you could previously get your hands on it
as CD-R at their highly talked about shows.
It might be brief
- less than 20 minutes - but 'Mistress, Reptile Mistress!' manages to
hit all the usual alt. rock touchstones (Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Shellac,
Mclusky) and offers hints that United Fruit could eventually break away
from them, such as on the catchy grunge of 'Shake' or in the heavy,
groovy breakdowns on 'Push It' and 'Track The Hunt' - bringing some new
vigour to the buzzed out, disc(h)ordant punk rock.
Back-to-back, 'Final Test's' slower, sludgier sound and 'Future Law's'
primitive hardcore show more contrasts, and what fun United Fruit must
be when they bust out live."

"Mistress, Reptile Mistress!" EP out shortly!
Current mood: excited
"Mistress, Reptile Mistress!" EP is released by SHE SAID RECORDS! GET IT! LOVE IT! SHOVE IT! You can buy it in our online shop at http://unitedfruit.bigcartel.com/ or at gigs. We celebrated the release on the 28th of May at the Captain's Rest with two fabulous bands, Hey Vampires and Hey Enemy, a bunch of friends and loads of other lovely people. The gig was quite a racket: kitchen foil outfits, various (more or less drunk people) climbing up the stage and taking over the mics and drum sticks as well as inflatable bananas bouncing in the audience! Unforgettable experience... Thanks for playing with us, thanks for coming to the show, thanks for supporting us, big thanks to Derek (you crazy redneck!) and thanks to the Captain's Rest for letting this happen! See you soon! There's a feature on us in the March issue of "The Skinny" : "United Fruit: The seeds of succes
Written by: Ryan Drever
United Fruit are currently lighting up the murky Glasgow underground with their unique brand of experimental rock. As the band continue to break the ice, just a year in, they sit down with Ryan Drever to tell the story so far One of several new bands currently providing the antithesis to Glasgow’s wealth of jangly indie upstarts, United Fruit — named after the controversial American corporation of the same name — have been turning heads on the local circuit in recent months. Their palette might fall somewhere in the ballpark of Sonic Youth's experimental wiles and the visceral intensity of At the Drive-In, but they've a hungry, raw sound all of their own. Iskandar Stewart (vox/guitar) and Stuart Galbraith (guitar) both played in bands prior to UF and, after little success, decided to take a break. The duo spent over a year "just getting into music again", as Stuart reminisces. "We thought it was a good way of writing. Me and Iskandar would just sit around and listen closely to a lot of sounds." Iskandar picks up the conversation. "We'd sit and listen to great bands like Sonic Youth or Shellac and go 'that sound is amazing! How do they do that?' Then we'd start trying our own interpretation of it all, incorporating other elements, to try and create something else." Judging by their recent live shows, we'd say mission accomplished. The rest of the band met through seemingly chance encounters. Having already acquired drummer Marcin Dabrowski — after the Polish student moved to Glasgow from France to study politics — the band switched from a standard three-piece (guitar, bass, and drums) set-up to using two guitars. Shortly after, Bassist Marco Panagopoulos was drafted in, completing the line-up. "It turned out Iskandar worked with a friend of mine," says Marco. "He told me to check out their MySpace. Where it said ‘sounds like’, it just had ‘two guitars and drums’. I jokingly asked: ‘So, I don’t suppose you’d be needing a bass player then?’ It turned out that they did, so I joined the band." In the intervening months the band clicked and spent the majority of their time perfecting their set before attempting to venture on stage. "We practised a lot before playing live," explains Iskandar. "Rather than getting gradually better as we played more gigs, we wanted a bit more impact from our first one." United Fruit have been plugging away at the underbelly of the Glasgow scene ever since, featuring repeatedly on bills across the city whilst finding solace in an ever-expanding group of bands treading similar waters. An enthused Iskandar tells of the band’s excitement to find like minds: "It just sort of sprung up on us that there was a healthy scene going. I think Glasgow’s always had a healthy scene, but in our sort of niche we’ve found something great." Since becoming a four-piece the band have recorded and self-released a single (Shake) and more recently a four track EP entitled Mistress Reptile, Mistress. Although it is still very much the beginning of the band’s ascent, it would appear the DIY approach suits them well. However, according to the band's ever-talkative vocalist, a helping hand wouldn’t quite be batted away: "I’d love to get signed and not have to worry about anything. Ideally, we just want to keep releasing stuff until we find someone that would be willing to ‘invest’ in it in some way and appreciates what we’re doing." In the meantime, the band look set to take their wares to farther points across the country for as long as is physically and financially possible, having only merely touched on this earlier last year. With a tight set, constant gigging and unwavering enthusiasm, it seems Glasgow might not be the only city to sample United Fruit in the not-so-distant future." Review of the gig with Citizens and Hey Vampires, 10th of February 2009, at Captain's Rest, Glasgow:
"Enter United Fruit (****), who command the final gathering (now including members from the other bands) with a tight, yet visceral and often funky set. From opener How Long's off-beat rhythms and soaring choruses to the riled-up energy of closer Shake, the band lay waste once again to the Rest's PA, weaving a brazen rhythm section with discordant guitars and jagged, melodic screams to the delight of the crowd, especially when the action spills onto the floor. On the whole, this is concrete evidence that good noise is alive and well in Glasgow. [Ryan Drever]"
