This was emailed to us, from the lovely Sue Cavendish at Netrhythms.. it gave us a big head for a minute and then we decided we whole heartedly agreed with her (about the artists and gig) so why not tell the world !

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hello Everyone -  welcome back to NetRhythms

http://www.netrhythms.com

I'm rejoicing in the new generation of folk musicians and singers with a bunch of albums and tours currently on our Listings. I can't remember when the scene was so vital and live performances so enriched by young talent. Sometimes it all comes together - with certain movers and shakers lighting the blue touch paper, so to speak.

So I'd like to give four NetRhythms Folk Awards to John McCusker for his talent in bringing so many wonderful projects together (Under One Sky; Drever, McCusker, Woomble)
to Heidi Talbot for one of the loveliest albums to be released this past year (In Love + Light)
to Boo Hewerdine for releasing his best work to date (with Toy Boxes 1& 2 and the new album promised shortly)
and to Tom Rose of Navigator for signing them and releasing their music.

It may be premature to talk about a Best Gig of the year but surely last Friday at the Union Chapel
with Kris Drever, John McCusker, Roddy Woomble, Heidi Talbot , Boo Hewerdine, (and Andy Cutting)
will be hard to beat.

‘Songs from the Floodplain’ is Jon Boden's second solo album, the first being the well received and self-released ‘Painted Lady’ (2006).

“... Boden is a man to watch” - The Guardian

Jon Boden’s most recent albums include the highly acclaimed Burlesque (2006) and Matachin (2008) with dynamic, multi-award winning big band, Bellowhead - and Vagabond(2008)  with the equally feted traditional duo, Spiers & Boden. He has also recorded and performed with Eliza Carthy on both of her Mercury Prize nominated albums.

Not only has Jon toured internationally with Bellowhead at a range of prestigious festivals, he's also performed on Later with Jools Holland (alongside new fans, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and made two other televised appearances at the BBC 2008 Proms. Bellowhead were recently appointed Band in Residence at London’s South Bank Centre, following in the footsteps of St Etienne.

Jon has, in addition, also found time to compose many theatre scores, most recently for the RSC's Merchant of Venice and Hamlet at The Globe Theatre (2008).

Jon Boden, who was born in Chicago in 1977 and grew up in Winchester, graduated in Mediaeval Studies from Durham University and since becoming a parent, has since settled in the South Yorkshire dales.

Songs From The Floodplain is a return to Jon’s rock roots and follows in a long tradition of post-apocalyptic literature, from The Last Man by Mary Shelley (1826) through Ridley Walker by Russell Hoban (1980) to, more recently, The Road by Cormac McCarthy (2006). This is probably the first time the subject has been seriously tackled in the form of an album, though, it has to be said that ‘Songs from the Floodplain’ is far less bleak then that of the many novels which examine the subject.

Although the album doesn't tell a complete story, there are strong thematic links between all the songs. The ambiguous character of 'The Preacher' looms large in the darker numbers (‘Penny For The Preacher’, ‘Dancing in the Factory’) whilst the character of 'The Gypsy's Daughter' dominates the middle of the album as a mocking onlooker to an archaic folk custom in ‘Beating the Bounds’ and then later, as an object of adoration in ‘The Pilgrim's Way’ and ‘April Queen’. Never quite sure whether an actual flood or a devastating man-made disaster has just occurred, all one can be sure of is that the basic fabric of community has survived and images of rain and flood are never far away giving ‘Songs from the Floodplain’s vivid narrative, epic proportions. The final track of the album (‘Has-been Cavalry’) brings all the themes together with a defiant hymn-like quality.

“A mover and shaker on the folk scene.. Jon Boden salutes his teenage rock roots … Mixing tenderness and anger in equal measure …a refreshingly original creation’.  - The Observer

"UNDER ONE SKY" TOUR / ALBUM..

The twelve artist musical celebration "UNDER ONE SKY" is touring this month into December, The album is available to buy early at the shows or upon release in February 09. You can listen to a track from the album, on the player now.

Under One Sky is an hour-long vocal and instrumental suite by the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer John McCusker in collaboration with a dozen of Britain's finest musicians.
Originally a joint commission by the PRS Foundation, the Scottish Arts Council and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Under One Sky sets out to explore and interweave the many different traditions, genres and influences at work across today's dynamic UK folk scene. Bringing together an array of established and emerging talent from both sides of the Border, McCusker's hand-picked ensemble includes Blur co-founder Graham Coxon , Idlewild vocalist Roddy Woomble and acclaimed Gaelic songstress Julie Fowlis. Revered balladeer John Tams and rising star Jim Causley also feature among the singers. McCusker himself heads a crème-de-la-crème instrumental line-up of Andy Cutting (diatonic accordion), Ian Carr (guitar), Emma Reid (fiddle), Iain MacDonald (bagpipes/whistles/flute), Ewen Vernal (bass) and James Mackintosh (percussion). Within McCusker's compositional framework, each musician has been encouraged to contribute to the music's development and arrangements, infusing them with a vibrant collaborative spirit.

Tour dates start in Scotland on 25th November @ Glasgow Fruitmarket

Award winning trio Lau are back in the studio this month finishing their new album (working title) "Arc Light" . The album is expected March 30th on Navigator. We are excited
by this, having heard a new tracks performed live on the November Uk tour. Could be the sound bar is going to be raised yet further!

Dean Owens has been out on a few dates with Eddi Reader and Nels Andrews, we have lined up a first single release " Raining In Glasgow" appears January 19th
digitally with some bonus tracks.

Boo Hewerdine's Toybox No.2 mini album is out now and has just been recommended by Observer Music Monthly this week. "Simple poetic reflections on life and love" ***
you can see Boo on tour with Drever, McCusker, Woomble and Heidi Talbot in Feb 09, starting at Union Chapel London on Feb 13th and he's pretty much always touring
year round, so check the dates on his myspace and website. The Toybox mini albums see Boo in stripped back acoustic mode and the new volume has already had
plenty of radio support- check out the sublime "White Lillies" and for the first time, you can get your hands on his original version of "Harvest Gypsies" (made popular on Kris Drever's 2006 Black Water).

"People Like Me" by Alyth, is coming out on Navigator February 23rd 2009, much more on this fine artist and album here soon - her beautiful voice is really something else, just incredible
and we hope you'll agree. You can sample a taste via the "This Is Navigator Records" compilation now.

The Martin Green Machine, have a sound that's seriously off the wall and forward thinking, taking in elements of folk, jazz, rock, dub, electronics, poetry and spoken word
and much more it somehow manages to remain joined up and intriguingly inventive . This collision of musical styles comes to Navigator via a new album released January 26th.
Martin launches the record at Celtic Connections when he will be showcasing a full brass band concert as well as performing with Lau, clever and busy boy that he is!

Heidi Talbot and Kris Drever release a new duet "The Blackest Crow" from Heidi's award winning new album " In Love + Light" on March 16th 2009, supported by round two
of the special duo touring, where Heidi and Kris sing their wonderful songs from across their catalogues together. Not to be missed. Two of the best voices in folk music today.

Mawkin:Causley are currently ahead of schedule with their knob twiddling with the super talented Stu Hanna ! - he of Megson (who's producing), in a London Studio! The highly anticipated debut album is coming to store new you in mid march 2009. Expect the unexpected is our advice, when the young guns bring you their take on English traditional tune and song.. a genuinely exciting proposition awaits.

A gorgeously dreamlike, roots -world - psychedelic platter is coming is the form of the re-vitalised Angel Brothers. The duo return in spring with their self titled new album
and some special live dates are promised. The album is currently scheduled for April 27th 2009 and a single will proceed its release entitled "Ghosts".

The "This Is Navigator Records" 17 track compilation we put together originally for Rock n Reel magazine, went down so well we have now made it available as a super cheap
(under £4) album available from all stores now. You'll find some as yet released tracks, demos and key album tracks and singles from our roster.. and it's a good place to start
if you want to a sample of the music we release here.

We are just putting together an double album anthology of the English musical genius (not using the word lightly, he is !) Chris Wood (expected late April) working title "Albion"

Talking of genius.. Sandy Wright is nominated for Scottish Composer of The year at the Trad Music Awards and Navigator are putting out a specially commissioned compilation
featuring Roddy Woomble, Heidi Talbot, Lori Watson, Boo Hewerdine, Dean Owens, Kris Drever and many more all singing the magical songs of Sandy Wright. The real bonus
is we have managed to twist Sandy's arm into making us a new studio album to go with it.. more on this when it's completed.

Up the workers !
