Sharing some Samples mail with our beautiful friends! Keep it coming!

____________________________________.

Just a quick thank you
i just wanted to let you know that the sound of the voices and the melody of the samples music is a pretty powerful thing. just today, i was driving my two kids for a playdate and popped in a samples live double disc...i am twenty nine years old and yet immediately felt like i was 19 again. fully.

just like that, i went back ten years. i found myself standing in the dorm room of the boy i "liked" in college on the night we discovered we were both samples fans! we danced there together like silly kids! just ENJOYING the music. and each other. it was joy.

then! i remembered the group of friends that piled into my mom's minivan with me for a pseudo spring break trip to Florida. i did most of the driving and that last leg was ROUGH, having had the least amount of sleep! i put the samples CASETTE TAPE in and my friend awoke and smiled. she stayed awake and just sang along with me as we sailed into the most beautiful sunrise. your music playing was the perfect backdrop for a most perfect arrival.

then, i was brought back to Lupo's in Providence, RI the night before a final exam. A friend and i got the tickets fully aware it was during exams. We said, "fuck it! we will deserve the break from studying!" and we DID deserve it...and the show was refreshing, as always. your music holds a special place.

so there i am today, driving in the car, and hearing the "weight of the world", i realize...the world is not as big as we think...and our experiences are not as far away as we remember. your music linked me back up with myself. all over again.

so thanks. peace.

~manda (:

Ronnie Reade
Hi Sean,
Im David, Ronnie's younger brother. I just wanted to say that he got me into the Samples music years and years ago and I have been a huge fan ever since! I absolutely love your work, I have made a CD of all my favorites and listen to it on the way to work and at home all the time. My favs are "Everytime" .. "Streets in the rain" .. "Indiana" .. and "Sacred Stones" .. to name a few. Your music is so original and inspiring.

I hope that I can catch a show sometime with Ronnie, but my work in the navy keeps me crazy busy.

Again, thanks for being a great source of motivation to me!

Re: Free Nature, Save The Wolves
Hi you guys....

I think this is a wonderful effort !!!!! I'm happy to see this..I'm from Idaho and have supported the wolf recovery since it was a mere debate years ago.
So when I heard the news of "open season" on the wolves, I've been disappointed to say the least.
It's no secret I didn't vote for Butch Otter and have never liked him for what he has been able to get away with in this state and I do feel like he mislead the good people of Idaho, again, when he was running for governor.
Sad to think the money I donated to this cause is for not...since Otter wants to kill all but 100 wolves in this state, just above the number needed to put them back on the endangered list
Which doesn't make sense when you think about all of the time, money and effort that has been invested into this recovery.
Thank you for supporting an issue so close to my heart.
Shari

Hey -

I'm so glad to be able to have you all on my "list". I got turned on to the Samples back in 97' and I've found it difficult to find your stuff. Needless to say, I downloaded a lot tonight off the isound.

I just wanted to say on a personal level, some of your songs have gotten me through a lot of turmoil in life. Sean, your lyrics are so personal and so connected to actual life, it blows me away how you guys aren't selling out stadiums. "As Tears Fall" has been a staple.

Thank you all for providing an awesome sound!

Sincerely,

Lee DiBella

Just wanted to ask...I really like your song Who Am I and I love playing it for people on acoustic guitar (mostly my family who loves folk and bluegrass up in Maine). What is the meaning behind this song? Great lyrics and everytime I sing it it makes me feel so small in this world of so many issues and where I fit into the world. Hope to see you sometime in VT or NH!

Thanks for your music and thanks for the isound player.

Feel us shaking is one of my favorites. I remember, back in the day, it used to make me sob. But it wasn't completely sad sobbing. It just had the power to hit me right in the soul and gullet. :)

RE: Did You Ever Look So Nice
That's my favorite Samples song. "Did You Ever Look So Nice"

Every time I hear it I make it a personal dedication to a sister of mine who died 10 years before I was born. Why? I don't know actually.

Great song
Mike

Man is so made that he can only find relaxation from one kind of labor by taking up another Anotole France

..and so begins the transition from the road to writing. With the exception of a few isolated shows, including the Rocks Off Concert Cruise in New York this Friday, Sullys Pub in Hartford this weekend and the upcoming East Coast jaunt, I will spend the next few months working on material for a new record. Plans are in the formidable stages right now so we dont have any specifics but we hope to have a new record and subsequent tour in early 2007. Of course, the band will play a few shows before then, but the majority of the time will be spent writing and recording.

MERCHANDISE
In addition to the new record, we mentioned in the last E:mailer that we are working on new designs to include on a new website and merchandise. Both the site and the new merchandise will be unveiled before the end of the year.

In the meantime, we have a limited number of tee shirts from the summer tour still available online at the Samples Country Store. Several of those designs will be discontinued once we roll out the new merchandise.

Many thanks to all of the fans who joined us on the last tour. Looking forward to another 20 more.

BOOKING
Interested in booking the band for a corporate or private event? Serious inquiries only. Email management@thesamples.com.

The Samples Bio

Denver, CO

As the Samples celebrate their twentieth anniversary this year, it's tempting to write their history in an incredibly dramatic fashion. Why, you can almost imagine the movie trailer voiceover..

They started life as a major label band, but when they found that the industry wasnt hep to their jive, they threw off the shackles of the majors and went indie. They toured the USA and elsewhere and found that their true calling was the call of the road. With the wind at their back, they built a reputation one which still stands today as one of the best live bands of all time. They are THE SAMPLES!

Man, thats great copy.

Except that, truth be told, there arent horror stories from the Samples major-label experiences that are still keeping the bands leader, Sean Kelly, up at night. Its getting to be a little blurry, he admits, seventeen years after that initial grab for the brass ring. That was a long time ago. (Major labels) are such a small part of my career.

And while its a well-honed urban legend that the only way to experience the Samples is in the live arena where, lets be honest, they are pretty awesome- its only half the experience. Once youve factored in studio albums, compilation albums, and official live releases, youre at eighteen discs and risingand thats including their most recent release, 2005s Rehearsing for Life, on Apache Records.

The line between live and studio is so pronounced that, when asked which studio album best captures the feel and spirit of the band in concert, Kelly really has no answer. Both are so different, he insists. Were good in the studio, too. Were very efficient, practical and resourceful. There's an element to us on the recordings thats really pretty, that's really nice. They're two different machines: apples and oranges, but never trying to be an apple, not trying to be an orange. If I want to capture it live, we'll go make a live album.

Which, as noted, they have done. 1997's Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility, their first live album, has been described as a staple of musically-hip college students everywhere during the late '90s, while Kellys personally fond of the more recent Live in Colorado, which emerged in 2004.

When it comes to the Samples studio albums, however, Kelly's a parent who loves all his children equally. With every CD, we come out of the studio knowing that we've done our best, he states, with confidence. Each one of them is like a photo album of that year what weve been through, the songs, the tours and I feel like they don't have a shelf life. Theyre like wine, in a way, at least for me. They ferment; they just seem to get better. When I listen back, I'm, like, Wow, that was a cool album!

Kelly reveals that, as a celebration of their anniversary, theres been talk of recording a collaborative album with friends of the band, but for the most part, the Samples will be spending their twentieth year as a band much as they've spent the years preceding it: on the road. It'd be nice if there were other avenues (to success), concedes Kelly, but were doing it our own way and taking a scenic road.

Perhaps it's because hes always looking forward, but, when asked to sit back for a moment and sum up the sound of the Samples, Kelly admits that, frankly, hes probably the last person to whom you'd want to pose that question. You'd really have to ask a fan, he says. I honestly cant tell you what the Samples sound is. I can tell you what it's not, though. It's not cheap. It's not synthetic. And it's definitely not lacking in soul or spirit or passion.

We move so quickly that I hardly even have a chance to listen to our stuff, but once in awhile, when were on a break, I stop and look back and go, Man! That's a lot of touring and a lot of albums a lot of sacrifices, a lot of responsibility, and a lot of accountability. Its rarely that I actually get to sit down and really listen to figure out what it is that were doing. I just know that its rooted always from the same place: integrity.

Lyrics to all the new songs from our New Samples CD “Rehearsing for life”

Cheers,

Sean

                        Brown Eyes In The Sun

I want to live- where the horses still run free

Gazing through the canyons at the faces on the trees

Living off the land where golden eagles soar

Resting by the river listen to it roar

Brown eyes in the sun

Brown eyes in the sun

Brown eyes in the sun

But can I fly away?

They made me bring the wagons and the wagons had the guns

The teepees been on fire since the early morning sun

One buffalo still standing as she prays in no ones name

They ask her not to worry as the sky begins to rain

 Brown eyes in the sun

Brown eyes in the sun

Brown eyes in the sun

But can I fly?

But can I fly away?

Brown eyes in the sun

Brown eyes in the sun

Brown eyes in the sun

 HEAVEN

The color of skin on a crying face

A look so sad you can’t find your place

Walk with me beneath the sky

Never ask or wonder why

You call this heaven?

You call this heaven?

A painted picture of the city at night

The paint is dripping from a brush that’s held to tight

A baby’s crying for its mother not to be alone

Welcome to a world that’s mending while the rips are sewn

You call this heaven

You call this heaven

School is out but only for the ones with silver spoons

Counting sheep like they were lions from the darkest rooms

We killed the earth and along the way we choked the sea

Spilling hatred far below the roots of every tree

                 My Guitar

Woke up today and grabbed my guitar

Headed to the beach in the godfathers car

Set us a fire and threw on some wood

Theres nothing like the warmth it feels so good

Were just singing our songs

Were not doing anything wrong

Leave alone we said to one of the cops

An out of work actor wearing Hollywood props

Up against the wall and show some id

You forget to mention that this is the land of the free

 Were just singing our songs

Were not doing anything wrong

Were just playing our songs

Were not doing anything wrong

Woke up today and grabbed my guitar

Headed to the beach in the godfathers car

The bad seed in the garden of love

From the devil it grows to the good lord above

Were just singing our songs

Were not doing anything wrong

Were just playing our songs

Were not doing anything wrong

                                           SAD WORLD

 Whistle train

 Take me to the end

 I v had many days

 Spent without a friend

What a sad world because no one knows the answers

What a sad world because no one has the answers

 Im making one more stop

For all the things I’ve lost

 I making one more stop

For a few things that I forgot

What a sad world because no one has the answers

What a sad world because no one has the answers

  Whistle train

 Take me to the end

 I v had many days

 Spent without a friend

What a sad world because no one has the answers

                  TOO YOUNG TO DIE

The man out on the street today made a stand

He says his life was filled with love and hope

Then pointed at the trees he used to swing on

And asked where the child within has gone

So you say your soldiers are strong enough

I say there feathers in the wind

No wars to win no seeds to sow

No swings to twist and turn

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust

Is that the truth at all?

Ever after will never be the same

 But I’ll keep searching anyway

When I  look at you upside down

From a place iv never been

I dream of the waves and hold you in

Look at the way the clouds

Are sifting through a clear blue sky

Remember now you’re free

But you were too young to die

One more time just to be held

Any stranger’s arms will do

Ever after will never be the same

But ill keep searching anyway

When did the winter freeze?

Who knows the time of year?

I dream of the waves and hold you in

Look at the way the clouds

Are sifting through a clear blue sky

Remember now you’re free

But you were too young to die

The man out on the street today made a stand

He said his life was made of love and hope

Then he pointed at the trees he used to swing on

And wondered where the child within has gone

I   heard the funeral march

Watching from far above

I dream of the waves and hold you in

Look at the way the clouds

Are sifting through a clear blue sky

Remember now you’re free

But you were too young to die

Maybe now you’re free but you were too young to die

Maybe now you’re free but you were too young to die

4th fret I think

                         DAD

Dad did you ever wonder

Who I grew up under

Can you even remember?

Christmas in December

The years are passing by

With just new ways to cry

Unable to explain

The troubles and the pain

 It’s always getting harder

The past is getting farther

If someday I go somewhere

You will always be there

But you’ve grown old alone

But now and then we phone

Theirs never much to say

As voices fade away

Dad, do you know where I am?

Or if I had my own plan?

Would you ever believe me?

That I loved you deeply

The years are passing by

With just new ways to cry

Unable to explain

The troubles and the pain

                             Moves me like a river

Snow against the windshield

Driving back alone

Windy city Wheatfield’s

Frozen to the bone

Running through the headlights

A truck without a home

Shelters me on cold nights

I loved you on the phone

Hold me if it’s painful

She sleeps on beds of nails

I told her I could love her

But her body seems so frail

Hold me if it’s painful

She sleeps on beds of nails

I told her I could love her

I told her I could love her

She moves me like a river

Strung out at every door

Only friends that left for ever

Will be coming back for more

In the morning through her eyes

Only darkness swirls in hope

Something told me all along

That she’ll never find her way

She moves me like a river

Strung out at every door

Only friends that left for ever

Will be coming back for more

In the morning through her eyes

Only darkness swirls in hope

Something told me all along

That she’ll never find her way

6th fret

                          Never’s

I never cared too much about

Everyone who was running around

I never stopped to say goodbye

Or look real deep into your eyes

I never stayed in one place for long

I never thought I would sing this song

I never knew how to be set free

Or   take the time to really see

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I never wavered in the wind

I never end what I begin

Butterflies in green and gold

I never watched there wings unfold

I never had enough to say

I never thought there was a way

When all the world has settled down

I never thought I would leave this town

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I never stood out in the rain

I never held the horse’s mane

I never stopped to say goodbye

Or look real deep into your eyes

I never walked you to your home

A dozen roses have come and gone

I never said how I love you

To many pieces wrapped in blue

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

I have too many nevers

                  SUPER STAR

No one can be your happiness

Inside your wilderness

Now I know were one of a kind

So I never want to go home

Find the light that guides in every soul

Shine it far to see

Because you have never seen cry

Doesn’t mean I never do

All these days end up on calendars

And faded magazines

Like on an ancient wall

When gods would all run free

When did you become a super star?

In a Neon world

These machines can be destructive

As they chew around the world

I remember 1970

When it was cool to be

Someone without a home

Unlike a rolling stone

Does the earth revolve around the moon?

Like a spinning wheel

That’s our home above the trees

And below the melting sees

No one can be your happiness

Inside your wilderness

Now I know were one of a kind

So I never want to go home

3rd fret G-Am-C

                 Young and Free

So Long ago in a summer field

The grass would flow like a turning wheel

The day as long as your pony tails

Our bodies young and tough as nails

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

Not a thing to do not a place to be

Un troubled lives for you and me

Counting stars across a summer sky

As each one falls into our eyes

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

And now the world is crying out

For no god hears a silent shout

I need to run through those fields again

Just one more time before the end

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

We used to be so young and free

We tried to fool the world that no one sees

The Samples
Rehearsing for Life

From the opening salvo of ‘My Guitar’ to the closing anthem, ‘Moves Me like a 'River,’ “Rehearsing for Life” will be on veryone’s Top 20 list for 2005 and beyond. The Samples fold rock, jazz, bluegrass and ‘jam band’ into an unforgettable gumbo of sonic perfection. Recorded during a time of turmoil in America – hurricanes, war, job loss and general discontent, this CD speaks honestly, but with hope. If the tracks, ‘Sad World,’ ‘Too Young to Die,’ and ‘Never’s’ don’t touch you, then please check out, you’ve lost all feeling. The jazzy track ‘Heaven’ and mysterious track “Brown Eyes in the Sun” are departures from previous musical efforts. This is no ‘sounds like’ or ‘cross between so and so’ CD. The unique Samples-sound has been the soundtrack for many fans lives of a 20 year period. This disk of all new material is unique, haunting, and memorable. Unlike other releases, The Samples have updated the unique sound to be more reflective of today’s current tastes.
