It's Record Store Day friends!
instead of bogging you down with a bunch of how do you do's and what have you's, we'll just cut straight to the chase.  so get on with your bad self.

Record Store Day Exclusives:

Akron/Family - "Everyone Is Guilty" b/w "Total Destruction" 7" (Dead Oceans)
Here's your chance to hear the first single from Akron/Family's new album Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free (May 5th), "Everyone Is Guilty" available on a limited run 7" with an exclusive B-Side not found anywhere else.
Akron/Family - "Everyone Is Guilty" (live)

Blitzen Trapper - "War Is Placebo b/w "Booksmart Baby" 7" (Sub Pop)
Blitzen Trapper remind me of Elliott Smith in a strange way. Like if E.S. decided to not stab himself in the heart (sic) and instead picked up a slide, drank a gallon of whiskey a day, and played the best fucking country-tinged ballads the world had ever known.  That said, both tracks are exclusive to this release and are well worth you taking the time to pick one up.
On Pink & White Swirl Vinyl! Comes With MP3 Code!

Cursive/Ladyfinger (ne) - Split 10" (Saddle Creek)
Cursive has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and while "From The Hips" is taken from their most recent (amazing) album Mama, I'm Swollen, it also pairs it up with "Universal Shrug", an exclusive b-side for this limited picture disc.
Cursive - "From The Hips"

As for Ladyfinger (ne), this was my introduction, and goddamn am i amazed.  Pretty much full throttle rock with enough tortured whine and palm muting to make any living body pump their fist and tap their toes.  As with the Cursive side, Ladyfinger (ne)'s side contains the song "Little Things" from their most recent album Dusk with the exclusive addition of the  insanely rocking "Old News".
Ladyfinger (ne) - "Little Things"

Sonic Youth/Beck - "Pay No Mind" / "Green Light" split 7" (Matador)
I'm surprised it's taken this long for Beck and Sonic Youth to make a split record, but it finally has and we should take it for what it is.  With this release Sonic Youth offer up their take on Beck's '94 opus "Pay No Mind", and Beck responds with a chilling rendition of Sonic Youth's paranoia inducing 1986 gem "Green Light".

Elvis Perkins in Dearland - "Lorraine, Lookout" b/w "I'll Be Arriving" 7" (XL Recordings)
My introduction to Elvis Perkins was through a live show while living in Seattle.  I had been offered a job as driver for the band on an upcoming tour and was to meet them that evening.  What i didn't expect was to be blown away, but that's what had  happened.  Sadly the tour didn't work out, but the band kept on with their ways and continued making captivating music.  "Lorraine Lookout" is a new song exclusively recorded for this 7" with the B-Side "I'll Be Arriving" from his most recent LP Elvis Perkins In Deerland.

Magnolia Electric Co. - It's Made Me Cry 7" (Secretly Canadian)
Holy Shit! This may be my favorite record Jason Molina and co. have ever released. His familiar warble sometimes straining for Orbison heights but staying within his own territory of fluctuating melancholy while the band plays on with eerie strings and plodding drums. This four song set barely clocks in at 8 minutes leaving the listener feverishly waiting for more.  This is what 7"s should be, dazzling displays of a band at their most fine-tuned.

Vetiver - "Wishing Well" b/w "Pay No Mind" (Sub Pop)
Vetiver remind me of middle period Kinks when they had finally shaken that teeny bopper image and started churning out ambitious concept albums. This 7" contains two brand new songs exclusive to this record, grab one while you can.
Blue Marble Vinyl!  Comes With MP3 Code!

Flight of the Conchords - "Pencil In The Wind" b/w "Albi The Racist Dragon" 7" (Sub Pop)
Does this really need a description?
Two exclusive new favorites from the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords.
Comes With MP3 Code!
Flight of the Conchords "Albi The Racist Dragon"

Obits - "I Can't Lose" b/w "Military Madness" 7" (Sub Pop)
Two brand new songs from this new project by the legendary Rick Froberg (Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes).  Not to be confused with his past projects, Obits comes across sounding like a more garage rock version of Superchunk, with a little more snarl than the Chapel Hill kids could muster.  I back this single hard.
Cherry Red Vinyl! Comes With MP3 Code!

Camera Obscura - French Navy 7" (4AD)
The first single from the Brill Building inspired outfit Camera Obscura's fourth album My Maudlin Career. I can't say enough nice things about this single.  Beautiful pop with production reminiscent of Phil "Shot her in the face" Spector.  This record is a real treat.

The Smith- The Headmaster Ritual/Oscillate Wildly 7"
First time this single has been released in the U.S. exclusively for record store day! Classic tracks from one of the landmark bands of the 80's.

The Stooges - 1969 7"
A repackaging of the Stooges classic anthem "1969" on 7" with a new picture sleeve.

MC5 - Kick Out The Jams b/w Motor City Is Burning 7"
A reissue of the incendiary single from punk's grandfathers.  Right now, right now, we want you to KICK OUT THE JAMS MOTHERFUCKER!

Jenny Lewis - Carpetbaggers 7"
The A-side is from her most recent LP Acid Tounge, while the flip side shows off her taste with an Elvis Costello cover.  This is well worth your time.

New Order - Temptation b/w Hurt 7"
Another re-issue, this time around from the classic post Joy Division outfit from Machester.

Green Day - Dookie LP
Remember 1994?  This vinyl re-issue should have everyone with their eyes closed thinking back to those golden days before Punk was a buzz word and Blink 182 were just a twinkle in the eye of teeny boppers everywhere.

Talking Heads - '77 LP
The 180 gram Vinyl edition of The Talking Heads classic debut is finally available just in time for record store day!

Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope LP
For the first time since it's release nearly two years ago, Regina Spektor's now classic begin to hope is finally found it's way to vinyl.  You can release the collective sigh now.

Booker T. - "Warped Sister" b/w "Reunion Time"(Anti-)
Booker T. (of & The M.G.'s fame) has just released some driving ass instrumental blues rock that is blowing my mind as i type this.  "Warped Sister" is nothing like the "Green Onions" we've all come to know and revere as something almost otherworldly, this is an older, wiser, dare i say it, more focused attack coming from years of hibernation and frustration.  I don't know what pissed him off but goddamn, it suits him.  "Reunion Time" on the other hand finds itself coming across more like a Japancakes b-side with the use of slide guitars and subtle soothing melodies.  What's not to like?

Pretenders - "Break Up The Concrete b/w "Love's A Mystery" (Shangri-La)
"Break Up The Concrete" is the first single from the newly reformed Pretenders, while the B-Side is a previously unreleased version of "Love's a Mystery", sounding more like The Pretenders of years gone by than the current output.

Tom Waits - Live from The Glitter & Doom Tour 7" (Anti-)
Two songs ("Lucinda" & "Ain't Goin' Down To The Well")from the much talked about Glitter & Doom Tour stop in Atlanta, Ga.  followed up with a side of majestic beauty ("Bottom of the World") from the European swing in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Get it while you can.

Bad Religion - Bad Religion 7" (Epitaph Records)
A complete reproduction of the very first Bad Religion 7".  This is the classic punk record that began the mighty Epitaph Records nearly 30 years ago. WOW!

Andrew Bird/Loney Dear - Split 7" (Polyvinyl)
These two toured together earlier this year and the culmination is this lovely 7".  One new song from each artist, exclusive solely to this release.
Comes With MP3 Code!

Jay Reatard/Sonic Youth - Split 7" (Matador)
One new song from each artist, Sonic Youth deliver "No Garage" a perfect example of the unpredictable instrumental noise blasts this band is capable of yet for some reason this reminds me of Pussy Galore without the hate-fuck vibe.  Meanwhile Jay Reatard comes out the gate four on the floor with "Hang Them All",  a raging rocker with traces of late period Husker Du and early Sweet for all the kids to get crazy about.  I fully support this record. Fuck Yeah!

Pavement - Live Europaturnen MCMXCVII LP (Matador)
This is one of my favorite things to come out as part of Record Store Day, the long lost live LP from Pavement's '97 European Tour in support of their Brighten The Corners album.  As Pavement rank as one of my favorite bands and the memories of seeing them live having my mind blown each and every time, it's nice to finally have an official document on vinyl that captures the genius of latter era Pavement that shows off the playfulness and chaotic abandon they let loose every time they took the stage.

The Jesus Lizard - Inch 9x7" Set (Touch & Go)
Shit your pants now.  Every Jesus Lizard 7" conveniently reprinted and housed in special plastic packaging that when unfolded can be hung from the wall as the most bad ass poster ever conceived.  This is only in an edition of 2000, so grab it now, because these will not be available EVER AGAIN.

and if that shit doesn't get you amped, tonight at 7 pm will see the rebirth of True White Brother, show up early and stake out a claim for yourself.  but that's not all, following at 8 pm at The Monolith you can catch Furnace, Finisher, Mako, The Flood, and Operator Dead Post Abandoned.  And if that still doesn't get your motor revved, there's always Unwed Sailor at the Soundpony at 10pm with Fiona Forte and Volcano.  Today is shaping up to be an awesome day!
We'll see you soon.

A.C. Newman - Get Guilty LP/CD
Carl Newman has been behind so many excellent bands and albums that by 2009 it has become increasingly easy to take a new album for granted, to mistake his steady craftsmanship for complacency. While it's true that Get Guilty doesn't break any new ground, you'd be wrong to think that Newman is treading water or just cranking out albums because it's his job. The album is full of songs that would have made the cut for the New Pornographers' last couple albums — in fact, some (like "The Heartbreak Rides" and "Submarines of Stockholm") would have bested everything there. At the risk of sounding heretical, at this point in time the A.C. Newman records are superior to the New Pornographers albums. Sure, the NPs make bright and shiny indie rock albums that sound great on the radio, but they also have acquired a layer of gloss and bombast that makes it hard to truly embrace their sound. On his solo albums, Newman is more relaxed with the arrangements; many of the songs forgo the insistent rhythms of the NPs for a more stripped-down and immediate feel. While there is less experimentation here than on Slow Wonder, it's still nice to hear Newman thinking small(er). He's also more focused in the songwriting department when he's on his own, forsaking the often manic twists and turns of a typical NP song in favor of a more direct approach. That's not to say that Newman has suddenly become a confessional singer/songwriter; it's just that he appears more confident in writing songs that simply sound good. It may not seem like a big distinction but it really is, and it helps give this record (like it did with Slow Wonder) a feeling of peace and warmth that wasn't really part of Newman's game until very recently. Of course, all that being said, Get Guilty is still a Carl Newman record — so you get all the things you've come to expect from him: insanely catchy songs, loopy and indecipherable lyrics, and first-rate female backing vocals (here provided by Kori Gardner of Mates of State and Nicole Atkins). Call him a journeyman indie rocker if you like, take him for granted if you must, just don't write him off. Anyone who can craft a record that sounds and feels as good as Get Guilty deserves to keep on making records forever. (From AMG)
"Like A Hitman-Like A Dancer"

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion CD
Animal Collective have brought the celestial down to earth with each record, but they've never sounded simultaneously otherworldly and approachable quite like they do on Merriweather Post Pavilion. Their eighth studio LP, it finds them at their best — straining farther away from conventional song structure and accompaniment, even while doubling back to reach lyrical themes and modes of singing at their most basic or child-like. Where before AC expertly inserted experimental snippets into relatively straight-ahead songs, Merriweather Post Pavilion sees them reach some kind of denouement where pop music ends and pure sonic experience begins — the sound is the only structure. Dismantling the framework of a pop song almost entirely (but using recurring passages in a very poppy way), the group offer a series of overlapping circular elements, all of which occasionally come together for a chorus but then break apart just as quickly. The music itself, at least what's describable about it, consists of deep bass pulses and art-damaged guitars with overlapping vocal harmonies that rise in a holy chorus. This may sound much like previous Animal Collective highlights, but where those records seemed like a series of accidental masterpieces — the type of work that sounds brilliant only because it's been culled from hundreds of hours of tape — Merriweather Post Pavilion is a perfectly organized record, not a note out of place, not a second wasted. It has the excitement and energy of Sung Tongs, the ragged sonic glory of Feels, and Strawberry Jam's ability to make separate parts come together in a glorious whole. Like the best experimental rockers surging toward nirvana — from the Beach Boys to Mercury Rev — Animal Collective have not only created a private soundworld like none other, they've also made it an inviting place to visit. "My Girls" - live in St. Louis '07

Devandra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon LP
In the early days of Devendra Banhart's career, his ghostly voice singing down the phone and captured on four track was more than enough to lend the eerie mysticism required for his nonsensical material (of course, it didn't hurt that his voice was bewitching no matter the lyrical content). As he gradually acquired confederates and the ability to record in studios, the clear problem was going to be retaining that same ghostly personality that made his early recordings so special. Decamped to a woodsy compound nestled in Topanga Canyon, and an enterprising home studio built within, manned by early champion Noah Georgeson, Banhart has weathered the storm of accessibility very well. Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon is many things -- perhaps too many things, but its successes outnumber its failures, and it essentially solves the problems inherent in confining a free-form singer to time signatures and arrangements and rhythms imposed by outsiders. It's also a success in that it finds him more comfortable within those confines than 2005's Cripple Crow, his first full-band record. Of the many things Smokey Rolls is, first of all it's his White Album, as he marshals his many influences into a mural of closely drawn portraits, whether it's Victor Jara on the opener, "Cristobal," Gilberto Gil on the deep polyrhythms of "Samba Vexillographica," Jewish wedding music and Borscht Belt comedy in equal measure on "Shabop Shalom," or, in the oddest combination, Dave Brubeck and Grand Funk (separately, not together) on the eight-minute "Sea Horse" (with backing vocals from another influence, the winsome Vashti Bunyan). The album is also his Blue -- Joni Mitchell's Blue, that is -- with several songs dedicated to the destruction of a relationship, with poignant lyrics ("Mama, I ain't waiting but I'm still holdin on"). As an aside, given the cast of "bearded bums" present, Smokey Rolls is also his Absolutely Free and, given his representation by Neil Young manager Elliot Roberts, it must be his After the Gold Rush. Certainly, his surreal life continues to yield more material -- consider the inspiration of becoming lost with friends in the Orinoco basin until a stork lands and immediately leads them far into the jungle to a tribe of yopo-snorters ("Tonada Yanomaminista"). And, amid the trippy songs and confessional singer/songwriter material, there's yet more evidence of Banhart's continuing musical idiosyncrasies: "Saved," which comes complete with a gospel choir, has the production mark of the late '70s (but not in a good way), while "Lover" is a surprisingly funky fusion of soul and pop, like Jackson 5 with a backing group of Archie Bell & the Drells plus the Manson Family on vocals. Continually beguiling and fascinating, even as he leaves his four-track days farther behind, it's clear that Devendra Banhart has much more ground to plow. (From AMG)
"Carmensita"

Bon Iver - Blood Bank LP/CD
Bon Iver's debut album made a huge splash in 2008, receiving both critical acclaim and near-mainstream popularity as the record fanned out over indie rockers, alt-folk fans, and lovers of quietly emotional and frequently inspiring songs sung by a dude with the voice of an angel. All the adulation was well deserved, because For Emma, Forever Ago is the kind of record that manages to capture a musician's soul and transmit it in a way that truly connects with a large array of listeners. It's an impressive achievement and one that holds up over many listens. Released in 2009, the Blood Bank EP is both a pause for breath for Justin Vernon and a reminder why so many people fell so deeply in love with the record and the sound he created. Recorded over a couple years and in various locations, the EP sounds like outtakes from Emma, but not in a bad way. "Blood Bank," with its subtly propulsive drums and idiosyncratic lyrics, would have been one of the album's best moments. The same goes for the more experimental but still beautiful "Babys," which features both some gently jarring piano and Vernon's soothing, multi-tracked falsetto. The only stretch Vernon makes here is on the closing "Woods" -- in a somewhat bold move, he embraces Auto-Tune and warps his vocals into almost unrecognizable shapes. Starting off as a lone voice, he begins to harmonize with himself and then adds layers of warbling vocals until the song builds to a frenzied, backwoods R&B symphony of weirdness. It's a move that could send lots of people into fits of disbelief but strangely enough, it works -- especially over headphones, where the vocals can envelope you completely. It's probably a direction Vernon won't follow, but it's an interesting experiment that keeps the record from sounding like outtakes (worthy outtakes, but outtakes all the same) from For Emma, Forever Ago.  (From AMG)
"Blood Bank" live in London Dec. '08

Sigur Ros -  Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust LP
With their fifth full-length album, Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust (translated as With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly), Sigur Rós have taken the poppy, sunshiny leanings of their previous album a step further into the light. The band has always been known for otherworldly soundscapes, and while there is enough of that here to keep the faithful happy, the band also writes straightforward, three-minute pop songs like the incredible catchy, sticky-sweet duo ("Gobbldigook," "Inní Mér Syngur Vitleysingur") that kick the album off like the first rays of the morning sun blazing through your bedroom window. That feeling continues on through the album as both the joyously soaring vocals and the buoyant melodies keep things floating happily on air. The arrangement of sound is quite different from previous albums, too. In the past their sound was characterized by a great wash of instruments merging together into great, gently heaving walls and waves of sound; on this album, for the most part, you can pick out individual instruments whether it's the acoustic guitar that underpins many of the songs (and provides the main backing on the intimate and quite lovely, and quite un-Sigur Rós-like, "Illgresi") or the lone piano that begins "Ára Bátur" (which does expand out into an epic undertaking with over 90 people including the London Sinfonietta and London Oratory Boy's Choir eventually playing on the track). Despite the few tracks that reach for the heavens, for the first time the band sounds grounded and stripped down. Songs like "Festival," with its pounding bassline and charging drums, and the melancholy album closer, "All Alright," which is based on a lonely piano figure (and features lyrics sung in English for the first time in the group's history), are firmly tethered to earth and shorn of excess artifice. In the past it was easy to be impressed with the sound of Sigur Rós, to be carried away by the grandeur of the band and be hit hard by the titanic emotions. On Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust you can really hear the human hearts behind the wall of sound, and while the emotional impact is on a smaller scale, somehow it is even more affecting. (From AMG)

Titus Andronicus - The Airing Of Grievances CD
Remember the Keystone Kops and the way their paddy wagon would careen wildly down the road and all the Kops would be hanging on for dear life as they were whipped about crazily? Listening to Titus Andronicus' debut record, The Airing of Grievances, makes you think that maybe the band recorded the album in much the same way the Kops chased criminals. It's a rollicking, rambling, yowling mess of a record framed by the band's half-baked literary ambitions (check the band's name and references to Cormac McCarthy and Albert Camus) and vocalist Sarim Al-Rawi's yelping vocals (which are oddly reminiscent of Mick Jones at his most stray cat-like). In the Keystone Kops scenario, he's the wagon and the bandmembers are the ones just barely holding on. Or maybe it's more of a tug of war where everyone ends up in the mud. Either way, the wild dynamic action makes The Airing of Grievances an exhausting, entertaining listen. At their best on tracks like the title song and "Fear and Loathing in Mahwah, NJ," Titus Andronicus sound like Bright Eyes with their guitars plugged right into the wall socket or Arcade Fire with fewer lessens but more consumption of cheap beer. The untrammeled enthusiasm with which the group attacks the songs covers up almost every tiny flaw in the album's design. For example, the far too reverential Springsteen cop at the beginning of "Joset of Nazareth's Blues" is redeemed by the sheer improbability of Al-Rawi's unhinged vocal style. Elsewhere, it might be weak lyrics saved by guitar heroics or less than inventive song structures fixed by the overflow of energy that flows through the record like a river of beer sweat. Nothing can fix the meandering ballad "No Future, Pt. 1," which pretty much stops the record dead in the home stretch -- the band and especially Al-Rawi just might not be cut out for introspective power ballads. The songs that follow finish up the album on a high note, with closer "Albert Camus" proving that the band can slow down a bit without losing the drive that sustains it elsewhere. The Airing of Grievances isn't a perfect record by any means but it is a lot of fun, and if they can avoid cleaning up their sound too much and keep plugging away, they may come up with something great someday. (from AMG)
