Tarot Series IV: The Emperor

Artist: Various Artists
Title: Tarot Series IV: The Emperor
Genre: Industrial/ Dark Ambient/ Experimental

Track Listing:

01 Mytrip - Reign Over the Headless
02 Sala Delle Colonne - Un impero Nel Deserto (slow)
03 Regosphere - To Lead Rather Than to be Led

The Father figure. In all our lives, this is the figure that has the most potential to elevate us to the greatest of heights, or throws us to the depths of hell on Earth. In my experience, I have seen few that are fairly indifferent to the presence of their own paternal influence, as most either love their fathers unconditionally as they have been loved by him, or absolutely despise them for making them victims of their ignorance and abuse. Whatever directions your relationship with Dad have taken, no one can deny that his power is among the most absolute while our heart continues to beat. This is The Emperor, the transcendental embodiment of paternity, discipline, achievement on a grand scale, and masculinity. This card is the one that means the most to me personally, and to elaborate why, I will take this chance to tell you about significators, the cards that parallel us and who we are.

Significators are very much an extension of our astrological and numerological associations. While an astrological sign is a general list of our characteristics and tendencies, a significator combines the numerological essence of the time of our birth with the energy of the sign we are born under. Combine all of the numbers in your birthday, month, day, and year, and should this number be greater than 21, combine those. Now look up the card that corresponds to that number. That card is not only a more concrete representation of who you are, but also tells you what you are on this planet to achieve, and what you are most capable of doing to enrich your own life and the lives of those around you. My significator is the card in question, and I could not be more proud to be a King among men...

The songs featured on this single are my favorite in the Serie so far, not because they are tributes to The Emperor, but because they are an exceptional accompaniment to an authoritative but just energy. They range from deep, determined and black, to feeling so much like the warmest embrace from Pater to child imaginable. The latter being the best way to describe "Reign Over the Headless" by Mytrip. A deeply comforting and ethereal piece, like the most perfect breeze blowing all over you as you stand before a shore, with sounds similar to the whisper of waves as they die upon the sands. With sands in mind, we are then transported beyond the proverbial shore and into a barren but magical place with "Un Impero Nel Deserto", the song I have come to favor the most from this series. Translating to "An Emperor In the Desert", this perfect combination of sounds like Middle Eastern flavored cello, hand-slapped Indo-Islamic percussion, as well as traditional lute and string drones instantly puts you next to a handsome figure as he makes his way across dunes that are made up of the sands of time themselves. Surprisingly (and thankfully), this is not the only version of this track, as Mehmet of Sala Delle Colonne has composed a more rhythmic version, yet unreleased at press time. The closing track is sure to please followers of a more Industrial style of Drone, Noise or Power Electronics. "To Lead Rather Than to be Led" is composed of a strangely ambient, seemingly undulating static and an almost arpegiated low-frequency. Very purist and to the point.

Though I did not receive word of this series soon enough to have been able to contribute to this particular single, I was able to submit a song for the card of wishes and cosmic unity, The Star, which will hopefully be released in October. I am not bitter whatsoever, but intensely greatful to all the artists on this single for they beauty they have wrought... The Rex is pleased.  http://www.heathenharvest.com/article.php?story=20090531150101414&query=tarot

Sala delle colonne - «Cronache»

Industrial/Experimental
Autumn wind productions

Out now the compilation "Nikolaevka" on Palace of Worms

..

VA – Nikolaevka CD

The Battle of Nikolaevka (Никоаевка) was fought on January 26, 1943 as small part of the larger Battle of Stalingrad. The Battle pitted forces of the Italian 8th Armys Alpini Corps against the four Soviet Armies. The Italian 8th Armys Alpini Corps, consisting of Alpine Divisions 3rd Julia, 2nd Tridentina and 4th Cuneense and the 156th Vicenza Infantry Division. The Soviets had already occupied every village and bitter battles were fought by the soldiers of the Tridentina to clear the way. In fifteen days the soldiers covered 200 km on foot, fought twenty-two battles and spent fourteen nights camped in the middle of the Russian Steppe. Temperatures during the night fell between −30 °C and −40 °C. On the morning of January 26, the spearheads of the Tridentina reached the little hamlet of Nikolayevka, now part of the village of Livenka. A Soviet division occupied it and the surrounding area. The Alpini immediately began their heroic attack as they knew that this was the last Soviet position blocking their way to safety. But the Soviet forces held their ground, and after hours of fighting the Italian units became desperate as each hour increased the risk that Soviet reinforcements could arrive. General Luigi Reverberi, commander of the Tridentina division, stepped onto one of the last three tanks as the sun began to set and, yelling "Tridentina Avanti", led his men personally on the final assault.

Sala Delle Colonne..Cronache..Autumn Wind - Masterpiece (2008)

http://www.crucialblast.net/webstore/newadditions.html

New from the always-challenging and mind expanding void explorers behind Autumn Wind Production comes another disc of grim soundscaping, this time from the Italian industrial project Sala Delle Colonne. This is a mysterious Italian outfit for which I was unable to find out background information on - all we have is the music on this album and one newer track that was posted online to go by in order to navigate Sala Delle Colonne's dark soundworld. The new track that I heard online was in the vein of neo-classical music, kind of like a more symphonic version of Amber Asylum's doomy chamber music maybe, a majestic and evocative arrangement of strings and horns and thunderous tympani, quite beautiful sounding. But on Cronache, Sala Delle Colonne has gone for a different atmosphere altogether, weaving together loops of what sound like World War I and World War II era military songs with blasts of harsh, corruscating noise, demonic voices, pounding war drums booming in the background, distorted samples of speeches and shortwave transmissions, and crystalline electronic oscillations that seem to mimic the whine of falling bombs and mortar fire, all combined into sinister soundscapes titled after specific European cities and years ("Africa 1915", "Moscow 1917", etc) and seeming to follow some kind of unstated narrative structure. Its at the same time very nightmarish and hypnotically beautiful, some of the more psychedelic electronics sounding not all that unlike some of Bastard Noise's stuff, but always accompanied by those relentless heavy drumbeats and deeply ominous samples of wartime media. Autumn Wind calls Cronache a "study of war in song", and it definitely succeeds in evoking a consistently grim, bloody panorama of early 20th Century battlefields and bomber-choked skies.

In May 1915, South African forces attacked the German occupation forces in the German colony. The forces succeeded and liberated the area of its German suppressor. The country, now known as Namibia, was then given to the United Kingdom. This rather unknown fact should be a rather big one in the history books, as it is one of the first pieces of land Germany lost after beginning their offensive in 1914. You might question me, as you think you are reading a history book right now. But you are awfully wrong there! This is "Cronache" the debut album of Martial-industrial act Sala Delle Colonne, hailing from Italy. Released through Autumn Wind Productions, so surely not an album to ignore. SDC knows their history, or better said that of their grandmothers and fathers. There are many Martial and Ambient acts out there that use history as a guideline through their music. But "Cronache" is the first one to me which is so specific in events. Although this isn't a concept album, every song on itself is.

Official as can be, "Cronache" starts with a prelude. Although I know quite a lot German war songs, the one given in "Prelude" is unknown to me. But however, very interesting. A looped scream-noise sound fades in to eventually take over the German soldiers singing. "Africa 1915" follows with copper instrumentation blowing a bombastic tune. A war drum is played in a minimal way but yet keeps on marching. Now and then it gets a little noisy, with a strange (rather happy-sounding) melody on the background. Sadly it can't be heard good enough to analyze what it is exactly. The noise gets louder and ends in a ringing tone. The third track "Berlin 1926" is a bit chaotic to me, in a negative way. I suppose the artist wanted to use the treaty between Russia and Germany settled in 1926 for this song as a theme, but I cannot really follow it. It's just all a bit too noisy to be good Martial-industrial, and a bit too soft for Noise. "Lion 1930", a bit better than the previous track and it gets a little bit darker now and then. First thing that I seem to notice as that SDC used many soundscapes and samples, which is perfect seeing the themes of the album, but in every song one too much. "Moscow 1917" is one of the best tracks of this CD to me. The slow playing horns, supported by a low muffed beat sounds very atmospheric and especially, very Soviet Union. It is a bit wrong of me to say so of course, as the Soviet Union was established in 1922, but the revolution started in 1917. So a song called "Moscow 1917" with such Soviet sounding marching music is always great.

From Moscow we go to London, 23 years later. "London 1940", is the first track where I can truly hear the theme without looking at the song name. Electronics, taken out of control, symbolize the flying bombs eventually kissing the ground with a large blow. The same electric sound takes care of all the other sound which can be heard in a city which is being bombed. Sirens, screaming people, all symbolized and worked out with one electronic tone. Phenomenal! I almost forgot to notice the WW2 samples on the background.

To proceed to track seven we need to awaken another ghost of Berlin. I think everyone knows what the song "Berlin 1945" resembles and I wasn't surprised to hear mister H. talking and yelling in the deep background of the track. The military drums are nice, together with the dark sounds cape, but with the event(s) in my mind I expected a bit more of this track, lasting only 3,1 minutes. We go 4 years back in time to arrive at the eight track called "Paris 1941". Dark ambient sounds capes finally give me the feeling that I have arrived in history. I would've liked it better if "Paris 1941" was one of the earlier tracks on the release, to give me this feeling immediately. Nice work here. The last city we enter is the capital of the SDC's homeland Italy. "Rome 1922" follows where "Paris 1941" ended, only now with added Martial beats. "Finale" is a great end to this release, with another unknown Military song to me. With the ambient low whistle on as its décor, it gets louder and harder to end at the half of the song. After a few minutes of silence, a secret track emerges, consisting out spoken words and an organ music base.

I definitely had a ride through history listening to "Cronache", but I am not as enthusiastic as I would want to be. I feel like the ending of the CD is much better than the beginning and that some tracks don't represent the theme of the song that good. Maybe that is why nothing is said about the song names in the supplied booklet. But nonetheless, interesting material and excellent music for a debut album. I hope SDC can keep its head above the water, in the huge ocean of sample-based Martial / Industrial.
