Tampa City Council Approves Transgender Protectionsby Carlos Santoscoy..City leaders in Tampa, Florida have decided in favor of outlawing transgender discrimination. The City Council approved the measure that bans discrimination based on gender identity and expression in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations with a 5-1 vote. District 6 Council member Charlie Miranda altered his previous yes vote during a November 19 second reading of the bill. Miranda was not available for comment. “In 38 states it's legal to fire otherwise qualified employees because of their gender identity or expression,” R. Zeke Fread, director of Pride Tampa Bay, said in an email. “By adding gender identity and expression [to the list of protected classes] our council members are sending a clear and strong message that discrimination in the workplace, accommodations and housing is not acceptable in our city,” he added. Fread called passage an “important victory for our transgender brothers, sisters and our community.” In an email alert by the conservative group Christian Issues Council, the group called the ordinance an “assault on Christian values” and urged members to oppose the bill. “Please stop this assault on Christian values!” Terry Kemple said in the alert. “If the City Council hears a loud voice from the Church, they'll think twice and we may actually defeat this proposal. If they don't hear from us, be ready to lose a few more of the religious freedoms our country was established to protect.” The group says it opposes the legislation because “people who dress like the opposite sex will be allowed into the restroom of the gender they feel like today” and “special privileges will be granted because of a person's aberrant sexual behavior.” Fread, however, said proponents of the legislation greatly outnumbered opponents during Thursday's meeting. “There were so many people lined-up to speak, the council had to extend the allotted time to accommodate all the people waiting to address the council by an extra hour,” he said. Ever wonder what it would be like to be part of a live studio audience for a television talk show like Oprah or Ellen? Until now you’d have to fly to ....L.A..., ..New York.... or Chicago for that experience, but now you can do it right here in ....St. Petersburg....! Filming begins on Saturday, December 5 for a new nationally syndicated gay themed television talked show called “Dennis TV”. The program is being pitched to a number of national channels including Bravo, Lifetime, WTBS, WGN, Logo and others. It is being billed as a sort of gay version of Oprah, Montel or other highly successful talk shows. While the host himself is gay and the program will target an upscale gay audience many of the proposed issues and topics will have a more mainstream appeal suitable for a wider general television audience.
I am privileged to be doing some work on the ground floor of this exciting new venture and am helping the producers secure the people who will be in the audience for the first taping. We already have part of the studio filled so there are only about 50 seats currently available. Tickets are ..FREE.., but you do need to RSVP so we have an accurate head count. You may call me directly at 727-542-6958 or email audience@dennistv.com. We need your complete mailing information as we will be sending you a ticket which will be required for entry. Doors open at ..10:00 a.m... and will be locked at ..10:30 a.m... (because we are filming for TV we can’t risk any outside noise or interruptions during the program). The studios are located at ..2031 5th Avenue South...
I guarantee you will be amazed and impressed at the professional nature of this studio and the program. I really thought I had walked into the set of talk show in ....L.A..... when I first went to the studio. There has been a huge investment in this endeavor and we should be thrilled to have it right here in St. Pete. If you’d like to learn more about the program you can visit our website at www.dennistv.com. The site has some sample segments on video to give you an idea of the kinds of topics that will be discussed.
I’d love to see some of you in the audience! *************************************************************** From: Lynn Marvin Dingfelder [mailto:lynntmd@mac.com] Sent: Thursday, November 19, 2009 5:23 PM To: Carrie West Subject: Yes it was a wonderful City Council vote today & I'm verrrrrry proud of my husband! Importance: High Hey Carrie... Thanks for having my husband, Councilman John Dingfelder as one of your speakers at your GaYBOR meeting last week. He said he got a great reception & I wanted to say a big THANKS for having him & for all your hard work in Ybor (love the email blasts!)! And I share your feelings on today's Council vote. In fact I saw some post commenting on " how happy they were about todays City Council vote" ... and how "now all we need is County Commission" & I want to say to you EXACTLY! You KNOW where John stands, you know what he's done ... isn't he just what we need/want on County Commission? Thats why we need your help! If people want progressives on County Commission... maybe you can help me get some volunteers who will work for someone who has shown where his heart is? We are walking t his Saturday morning 9:00am, knocking on doors of targeted voters (we will have a primary on August 24, 2010 & then the General, Nov 2nd, 2010 & there are R's already in the race). You know what it takes to win an election ... and we sure would appreciate if you could help direct the people who really want positive change & equality in Johnny's direction? John Dingfelder for County Commission~ District 1

To see all the Photos, Links & More & click on the Gossip Star Dishing with Mark & Carrie 11-4-9 You are Invited to the Sneak Pre view Cocktail Party "The Pianos in Ybor" Saturday, Nov 7, 8-10PM @ Gallery Live (Next to MC Film on the corner of 8th Ave & 15th Street Ybor City) The Tampa Bay Business Guilds "Citizens of the Year" It was a packed night at the Ritz in Ybor. The Annual Tampa Bay Business Guild Award Banquet set a record crowd. The night to celebrate and honor the friends and advocates that work so hard in the area for GLBTA causes. At the helm of the catered dinner gala was Fox TV Channel 13 anchor Russell Rhodes, MC'ing with his classical wit and humor. Guild President Corrie Jeffries was dressed to the t's in his tailed tuxedo. Some of the GLBT local politician and officials included newly appointed Tampa's first female and lesbian chief, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor, elected openly Gay Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner, and Circuit Court Judge Carolyn Tesch. It was an great honor for us to bestowed the Tampa Bay Business Guild's "2009 Citizens of the Year Award." In presenting the award Commissioner Kevin Beckner gave a heartfelt introduction and we were handed a framed letter from Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and a plaque from the Tampa Bay Business Guild honoring "Mark Bias and Carrie West as 2009 Citizens of the Year and two of the founders of the GaYBOR District Coalition." We humbly accepted the recognition among our friends, peers and Business Guild Members. "We have lived and been a major part of the Tampa Bay GLBT community almost all of our lives. This is a great honor you have given us and we THANK YOU!" "The President's Award" given by Corrie Jeffries, with a video introduction by Florida State Representative Rick Kriseman was given to former Guild President Dr. Scott Barry. "Volunteer of the Year" went to Felicia Filallo from the Human Rights Campaign. The "Non Profit Group of the Year" went to the Susan B. Plotnik Board members for years of service for women causes.. SHAME on the Tampa Cuban Club!!! First, We would like to THANK All of You who sent E -Mails & made Calls!!! We assumed the Cuban Club was totally unaware of the kind of HATE projected by Buju Banton who was mysteriously scheduled to perform Friday, Oct 30 at their club. We informed the Cuban Club & then many of you of the situation. This guy advocates in his songs and in person violence, hate, killing gays and beating up women! It was up to The Cuban Club to do the right thing after that. PRIDE Tampa Bay & MC Film (we never spoke on behalf of the GDC) decided not to protest the event. We felt that the Cuban Club is totally responsible for booking the act, let it go on & for the consequences afterwards. Below is the only letter we received from the Jose Berenguer, President of the Cuban Club cubanclubtampa@verizon.net . You decide for yourself the tone it was written in. Interesting that only Gays called him? Humm... We think not because most of the 100's of calls and letters we received were from Ybor City busineses and Tampa straight allies. We do not advocate profanity nor did we instigate the controversial concert. The 50+ cancelled performances around the country were noted in the Tampa Tribune & St. Pete Times papers in regarding locally The Ritz in YBOR CITY, Hardrock Hotel in Orlando & Jannus Landing in St. Petersburg . It will be very interesting to see what, if any damage control the Cuban Club does. With GLBTA PRIDE, Mark & Carrie ********************* Below is from the President of the Cuban Club Mark/Carrie, I appreciate you sending this out. I have been on the phone all day with concerned citizens from the Gay community. Some of the post, especially Mr. Wolfe contacting me at my private office and then putting my personal phone number on the internet is completely wrong. The Club has hosted many events, including Gay, Church, Rap, etc...We respect everyone and request that if calling the office please refrain from using profanity or threatening the office staff--THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE TODAY. Everyone has the right to protest because that is your right. We did not know about the history when this was booked at the last minute and we never saw anything in the newspaper stating that all these venues cancelled the event--since no one on the board follows reggae. TODAY, We know the real story and will make sure this artist does not return to our venue. respectfully Jose

Ghostly Lore Tales of Ybor City In the almost thirty years in Tampa area we have always loved the uniqueness and historic aspect of Ybor City. Yes, it is quaint historic, ethnic and very open to a variety of cultures that keep it going. No one group has a ruling hand in Ybor. Just by its early beginning it served on a non-segregated community. Often the beginnings of a village are filled with terrific lore stories of ancestry or ghostly spirits of the past. I went out into the area to find and hear about some of the historic Ybor City ghost lore stories. I started out with some old stories we have heard, "Oh that place is haunted." My reply is ,"Why and what have you heard that makes you tell me that... that place is haunted?" Here are a few of my interesting findings. Teatro on 7th (previous Big City Tavern) I had been told has a cynical spirited ghost in the 2nd floor restaurants hallway from the kitchen to the dining room. Often tripping or pushing servers with a tray full of plates of food. Some servers say they feel like a rope came up and tripped their legs. New owners chef Bill and Leigh have more interesting stories. Many guests and workers have seen a Latino lady in a full floor length white dress in high heels has been seen there in the restaurant numerous times. Very period piece timing and is gone as quick as she is identified. Most recently a mischievous ghost has been making waves in Teatro with a quick push. One of the owners was pushed from behind in the front of the bar and had bruises on her back to show for it. Nobody was around! This I was told, "happens a lot!" And in a very eerie moment, workers were stripping and sealing the wood floor. They closed up late and when opened the next morning candle wax was puIddled all over the floor near the huge floor to ceiling windows. The only candles around were new and had not been lit! Yes, doors open and close by themselves at Teatro and yet nobody is around. King Corona on 7th Avenue had a lot of different operating tenants prior to the famous cigar /coffee shop. Previously Raul Vega for decades sold the finest in women's clothing then La Nica Fashions was there up to 1997. Owner Don Barco gave me some of the chilling accounts that he has experienced and were told of his establishment. First was a taut cigar smoking gent who looked like a boss of the place. No it wasn't Don! This business gentlemen spirit had been spotted by customers and was said to be wearing a light colored fluffy shirt and the sleeves rolled up on this hairy armed ghost. He seems to be curious as to what customers like to buy! Secondly is the sighting of a small smiling little girl. Store employee Sarah has seen the little girl and thought that her parents were around. She vanished. She has been seen by customers and salesmen that call on Don. " That is a cute little girl Don! Who is she?" he has been asked by a number of reps and patrons. All describe a smiling little girl in a turn of the century Sunday dress. Is anyone missing any children? Island Florists on 7th Ave is a most unlikely place for a ghost. Flowers and gifts fill the local shop owned by Mario. I had heard of a co existing ghost at the store. HE is said to have been in the big fire in the 1920's when a large portion of Ybor City was burned down including the brothel and the unlicensed casinos directly behind Island Florist. Mario showed me the fire and smoke marks still scoring the bricks almost 100 years prior. The ghost makes the dog bark as he comes in through the ally door. He comes in quite frequently some days. It is said that he was burned to death in the fire leaving the brothel! He still marches around looking for an escape in the 15th street ally. The Italian Club of Tampa ( est. 1894) on 7th Ave is an ethnic pillar and the social outlet for many decades as a plaza for dances, dinners, card playing and community social events. This historic building has a singular aspect that isn't scary but memorable. A number of members have seen past Italian Club President Paul Longo and a long standing board member (1920-1980's) ghost walking around inside the huge social club auditorium and in the basement bar. Always working to keep it in ship shape condition. The Italian Club Cemetery on 22nd Street North is a private Italian Member Cemetery. But one of the most recalled stories that I was told from early 1980's is the story of club women working one day at the cemetery sprucing up the cemetery for the annual Italian Cemetery picnic putting in plants and trimming around the family gravestones. A lady on her knees was trying to get up from working when a young dressed soldier came up and offered her his hand to help her up. She 'Thanked Him very much' and asked for his name not recognizing who he was and thought one of the other ladies had a relative coming to see the cemetery. After she looked around and yelled to the other ladies, the well dressed muscular smiling soldier spirit vanished. Others have said to have experienced the same uniformed young gent at different times. Gaspar's Grotto on 7th I talked with owner Shere Schiller about the ghost appearing hands in pictures taken at the eatery and bars location. The pictures when developed have ghostly long hands around a small boy. Easy to see but unexplained! Noises are heard by patrons and employees in the back of the bar still occur. And nobody is back there! The Ritz on 7th has recently had a million dollar makeover. It is spectacular historic theatre and something else is too. Children are heard running, screaming and playing in the upstairs apartments corridors by a lot of the tenants. Sometimes disruptive, the playful noises come and go in this adult only apartment complex! Carla V. a manager of the Ritz, says she has had a few of the 2nd floor tenants tell her more suspicious stories. The residents look in the hallways and see nothing but faint to loud noises of children being heard, often! But before that in the 1970's, the projectionists, Beemer, knew the dazzling Melanie Minyon. On occasion the infatuated admirer of a very young Melanie had her come over to the Ritz. "On many occasions the projector in the projectionist room would just start running and show what ever movie was on the reels or with nothing on the movie reels. It just had a mind of its own." Melanie said. " Very eerie." The Ybor Eagle is a new phenomenon sighting that occurred by one of the bartenders, Shane. Working on opening the bar, all alone, noises came from the back of the bars restroom areas. Doors opening and closing. He was sure that he was the only one there but went to investigate the situation after a couple of doors started banging. Seeing that nobody else was there he walked back to the bar. Around the corner he heard chains rattling and taps on the wall. He left screaming and didn't stop until he could go to another cafe for some water. And probably a couple of beer! Oh I just love gothic, paranormal and ghostly stories. Czar ( former Tracks, Pleasure Dome, El Goya) on 7th has a lot of friendly ghost beings. I had to talk with the Ybor Diva Joey Brooks about encounters and stories she had heard. "Need not go any further. These are first hand encounters." she said. First when a youngster starting work at El Goya in the spot light room upstairs next to the office she and co-worker friend, small midget, Dolly were working the spot in the small cubby hole. The infamous drag show was getting ready to start. " You have to realize this area we worked in was small space right over the bar." They heard footsteps and thought the manager (Warner) was checking up on them. But they noticed the manager down stairs next to the bartender. They waved for the bartender to have the manager go check upstairs as someone was walking around in the office. Security went and didn't find anyone and locked the door. The show started and the lights were on stage with the performers and they heard the definite footsteps overhead again. Joey slipped a note for the bartender for the manager to check upstairs again. Again nothing and was yelled at by the security guy. Show was almost over and again the steps were loud above their heads in the little spot room space. All of a sudden a ghostly man in his white pant legs dropped through the cubby hole where they were working. Then just disappeared. Yes, it scared the begeebers out them both!!! The lights went out...Sorry who was ever on stage. Then in the back western bar one night Joey and a couple of other performers were getting ready before the club opened and walked down the hallway and there was a man in a white tailored suit, large white hat, smoking a stinky cigar. " Are you suppose to be here?" Joey asked then turned around and left. Calling a security guard to check it out as no one was suppose to be in the club yet. No one was there as they returned but the cigar smell was strong and smoke still was there. Others have seen this same ghostly man in white in all parts of the club. A story Joey also shared was about the club was when it was the Havana Hotel and the Las Novedades Restaurant. A chef and waiter had a deadly knife fight. The dead waiters ghost has been seen in the club in a white waiters outfit. Don Vicente Hotel (old Gonzalez Hospital and Clinic) on 14th and 9th Ave we have been told that the basement bar of the hotel has had many guests see ghosts. This was the previous area of the once hospitals morgue. Known as The hospital of the 'un-dead' as patients whom were thought had passed away were put in the cool basement morgue and were miraculously came back to life. Some say hot weather and some say no explanation! Ybor Resort & Spa ( former Trelles Clinic & Hospital) on 8th Ave is another very bewitching and scary place. The building sat for years without any tenants or maybe they spiritly did. Before the remodeling to the new resort I personally can say this place was like going to the halls of a haunted house. Equipment left; a huge sanitizer machine, the pot shape bone crusher in the morgue and the medical surgery room with the surgeons sinks. It wasn't until I met up with owner Fred about the windows closing on their own. The doors on the 2nd floor rooms would never stay closed. The feeling of someone putting there hand up the back of your neck and hair line. It would end chills up your spine. I remember calling televisions Sci Fi Channels "Ghost Hunters" about this scary place. They responded as did HBO's Paranormal, local groups leader Bill Sharpe's Ghost Watchers group and SFPRS. On many 30+ tours of the old medical building we experienced anomalies, spirits, huge temperature changes, and things you just knew were ghosts and not tales! We met the child in the pharmacy who said in Spanish on digital recording, "My name is Juan." I and others also met up numerous times and even filmed with the ghostly spirit Conchita Trelles, beautiful wife and nurse at the medical center to Dr. Jorge Trelles. Well, that is only a few sampling accounts of lore tales, unexplained spirits and stories in Historic Ybor City. I know that I will be receiving more fun stories. Ghosts Lore Stories of My Growing Up Years ... I just love the crispy fall season. It is reminiscent of my younger days growing up in the colorful leafy wooded area in northern Wisconsin. I encountered many paranormal and ghostly stories of lore growing up. A few that really got my mind going was the story of a Wisconsin River ferryboat captain murdered and was an American Civil War deserter, Calvin Blood buried near St. Point, WI. The irony is that he was buried in the Blood Cemetery alongside the river. A lot of area kids and college students went to see the grave site and often saw what appeared to be a ghost who was said to have whispered to many, "I'm Capt. Calvin Blood!" He is said to have been murdered by a couple of crazy ferry goers. His ghost was here, there and everywhere! I went to the cemetery one day with a family friend St. Point Police Detective Audrey on a cool fall night to see if we would see the infamous Calvin! We took the police cruiser out to the cemetery in the early evening hour. We arrived at the tempered care cemetery and walked around to see where the Blood gravesite and stone was. Definitely a party place for young crowds in the area with beer cans spread around. To our surprise the portable police radio started to screech and then went dead. We walked back to the cruiser and the car didn't start. The battery was totally dead. We were a little on edge with both of the incidences that just occurred. We were stuck out in no where land. And not along a well traveled road. We walked around the fenced hallowed graves and grounds. The wind was whistling through the tall pine trees and we were sure we would see something out of the ordinary - ghost or something! Nothing but a sense of eeriness. An hour later the police radio came back on unexpectedly and we called for a tow truck. The car was started by the truck driver. Oh well.... No signs of ghosts or apparitions but a truly weird northern night experience. The second personal experience was also very ghostly. I think everyone knows Alfred Hitchcock's movie, " Psycho" a haunting Halloween season timed classic. The deranged movie is based upon a guy from our neighboring town. His name was Ed Gein; loner, handyman, farmer, murderer, taxidermist and cannibalist. He was one of America's worst documented psychopaths, serial killers and a big 'mommas boy'! In fact he preserved his dead mother and had her body sleep in his bed with him. As a youngster I recall, I went with my parents to see his farmhouse days after the cities newspapers reported and county sheriffs dept said that he was arrested for murdering a hardware owner, Bernice Worden in rural Plainfield, Wisc. She was well known as a country hardware and farm store and both my parents and family knew her. The 2 lane highways around the isolated farm were packed with police cars, tv trucks, cars and people. He was known by our family because he bought vegetables and fruit from my Aunt Grace who had a fresh vegetable roadside stand. Police traced him from the last receipt at the hardware store. They found the shop owner decapitated and strung up in his barn. Neighbors said that Gein would often offer them sausage meat saying it was deer meat and he was a hunter. Hmmm. Police investigators found human skull bowls, tanned human skin lampshades, human skin belts, ground up human meat, human sausage and human organs in the refrigerator. Weeks after we had visited the gruesome site neighbors burned the farmhouse and out buildings down so it wouldn't turn into a cult museum attraction. The whole area called Gein's house the "house of horrors." Gein's truck was sold to a circus as a sideshow exhibit. Police said that they found a list of older area women's names on a pad in the trashed dilapidated farmhouse kitchen and Aunt Grace's name was on the list. Other movies also used this psychomania guy as inspiration to "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and in "Silence of the Lambs." They say ghostly sightings and things still are found around the Plainfield farm property today. He died in a Wisconsin Mental Asylum 1984. Philip Dinkins, chairman of the city's human rights board, told the Council that "A need exists in our city for legal protection of these individuals from discrimination." He said "ensuring that the city of Tampa takes a strong stand against discrimination in all its forms will have a positive impact on our city's economic development. Progressive companies seek out communities committed to diversity and opposed to discrimination." The Council has directed the administration to research the issue and come back to the Council with a recommendation.

BACK TO THE SIXTIES FOR THE STAGEWORKS GALA
Stageworks Theatre’s fourth annual Masquerade Ball will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Centro Asturiano. This year the theme is “Tie Dye Black Tie!”, a sixties evening.
The proceeds from this year’s gala will go to the building fund for Stageworks’ new theatre in the Channel District. The build out of the donated space at Grand Central at Kennedy condo is expected to begin by the end of 2009, with a Fall 2010 opening.
This radical chic evening will be a creative mix of peace signs and glitz in a magical mystery tour of delicious food, drinks, entertainment and lots of dancing. M.C.’s for the evening are Brendan McLaughlin and Deiah Riley of ABC Action News.
Gala Chair Andrea Graham says, “Bob Dylan’s quote from the sixties is very relevant for our event. He said “The times they are a-changin’…” which mirrors the role we are playing in helping to bring change to Tampa’s Channel District!”
Tables of 10 are available at the $1,250, $2,500 and $5,000 level. Individual tickets are $125 per person. Graham also says that the proceeds from the gala will put the theatre over the top in the building fund campaign so that construction can begin. “ To use the words from The Beatles: ‘we’ll get by with a little help from our friends.’ ”

Along the way there were rest & food stops. As we headed into Washington, DC the film "MILK" was played and was just the right spark we all needed. When we all saw the traffic jams we knew this was something BIG!!! 100,000's of people were all making their way into the city. Arriving at our host hotel, The Washington Plaza 3 hours late it was 4PM on Saturday. After much needed showers and change of clothing we were off to tour & explore the city. We are very lucky to have our Niece Sarah & her Fab partner Jennifer living in Washington and offered to give us an historical tour. As we were standing out side the hotel taping a GaYBOR show segment with Rich Kerin, when a carload of GaYBOR people we knew drove by honking (I guess GaYBOR really is everywhere). Just then, quite by accident, our niece Sarah pulled up too. We had the VIP treatment as Sarah showed us all the presidential monuments, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR newest monument & their lovely suburb home. Sarah suggested a great iconic LGBT restaurant in Dupont Circle called Annie's Steakhouse. It was simply the best and great with its 20+ years of historical service to the community. If you think Ybor City has problems with parking try Washington, DC! We gave our names at the restaurant and walked into neighboring Jack's for a drink. To our surprise we were given a full glass of Absolute Vodka, a Myers Rum filled to the brim over ice and side bottles of sodas. How tasty!! The streets were packed with visiting marchers from around the country and tourists from around the world. Wow Washington, DC is historic and great!!! It had high energy levels everywhere we were at. We met so many people from across the country in Annie's, packed sweaty boy bods and sky high energy at Jr's and also at the hotel with so many others for a night cap. Some were getting back from President Obama's speech at the HRC $500 Gala Dinner. As we woke Saturday morning there was excitement in the air! 8 AM for breakfast and the room was filled with new friends all laughing and talking like a family reunion. It was a refreshing 45 degrees outside. Load up our belongings on the bus again before the march and go to the staging area to march. The streets were getting crowded with marchers. We were so close to the staging area 2 blocks from the hotel. Thousands were already in place, greeting new ralliers and chanting by 10:00 in the park 1000's of rainbow flags, signs, pins, shirts and banners. Choirs, bands and drill teams. Colleges, churches and organizations. State by State Gay unity signs appeared. It was totally unbelievable! Who was waving out of her window yelling? Rosie O'Donnell! All for equal rights for everyone in the United States! A very boisterous Young Queers for Change had thousands singing and chanting college age students from across the country. Socialist Workers, Metropolitan Church Clergy Group, Equality Tennessee, Wisconsin Gay Student Union, Christian Clerics Alliance, Texas GLBT Reform, Gay Soldiers of Iraq and thousands of other GLBTA state college and political action groups were all close by our Stand Up Florida staging area. There were many state Equality organizations from across the country. Humm... We did not see representatives of Equality Florida present? We had a Stand Up Florida banner most of the media wanted to film. You have to see the pics. The National Equality March started on I Street at 17th then onto Pennsylvania Ave. to pass the White House, then right to the Capital. With cameras flashing & video rolling, The Florida Contingency was off led by Anthony Farver, President of STAND UP FLORIDA. There were Drums, PA Horns, Signs, Music, Flags Waving & cheers everywhere like... Obama Obama, Let Mommie Marry Mamma!!! What do we want? Equal Rights, When do we want them? Yesterday!!! Stand Up, FLORIDA!!! - Stand Up FLORIDA!!! We're here, Were Queer, Were Fabulous, don't F--K with us!!! & 100's of more new chants..... Who would have ever thought that over 400,000+ GLBTA people, with heads held high, would Proudly March the 3.4 mile parade route to the Capital steps and the speakers stage. The march was 4 times bigger than expected! Dozen & dozens of speakers kept the crowed energized & inspired. This was a day that history was made for the GLBTA community. At 5 PM, with our voices gone, we all made it back to our waiting bus at Union Station. The bus pulled out of Washington. The group was over the top energized. On the TV monitors played all the classic LGBTA Videos; I Will Survive, Dancing Queen, We are Family... as the group danced in the isles while the sun went down. A couple of rest stops, then hamburgers at midnight. The next thing we knew it was morning and we were back in Florida. 11:30 AM Monday as the busses pulled into Ybor City. Everybody had bonded and shared a life time of memories, as we were rejuvenated and ready to continue the Fight for Equality. Looking back at the march, we were very impressed by the size, organization & well behaved groups. The most impresive thing to us was all the young people that were there. It is so good to know that 1,000's & 1,000's of young people are picking up the torch and carrying it on into the future!!!! Below is our Video of the Trip & Photos Enjoy!!! Mark & Carrie Click here for our video.... A couple of fun moments we have to share.... It was getting late afternoon & we all were a little tired. When while looking at monuments Mark suddenly got a strange looks on his face pointed & said "Looks there... why do they want to end trannies?" Rich & Carrie both busted out laughing. "Mark... the word is Tyranny, not trannies!" When we ordered a Vodka Soda, the club served a glass of Vodka & a bottle of Soda on the side. Richard proclaimed loudly "I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!" we agreed! When we stopped at the rest stops on the way up. Mark would wake up and say "Were are we?" The guys replied "Were in Vending, South Carolina. See the sign?" It took 3 stops until Mark caught on. (Vending machine Signs at rest stops) New 20th Anniversary Tampa Intl. Productions wraps up production on the controversial docudrama TAMPA CITY HELD AT BAY. It relates the story of Jason Galehouse and of Michael Wacholtz who were victimized by two thugs who got together for a weekend of carnage and who were part of a sub-culture of slavery and "snuff" films. One of them described to authorities in detail how they dismembered Galehoses body and how they made him disappear. The docudrama features Pamela Williams, Erick Bunch, and Galehouses best friend Tyler who was responsible for breaking the case and pushing it on. Tyler went out to gay nightclubs and cruised the streets of Tampa at wee hours in the morning to find a hustler who had been tortured by two individuals, brought the hustler to the police and had him ID the men from photographs The same two men who abducted his friend Galehouse, and cut him to pieces with an electric saw... He found the killers of his friend. An odyssey which led to their trial and conviction.« The MC Film Calendar For all the upcoming events & posters please click on the calendar star above. Leather Men's Brotherhood
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: This year, South Florida will be fortunate to have two leather events to attend over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend; the Leather Men's Brotherhood will host the Fourth Annual Leather Masked Ball at Purgatory on Friday, November 27, while the White Party will host The White Hot Leather Ball at Sea Monster on Thursday, November 26. That means two consecutive nights of leather, and who wouldn't like that? The Leather Masked Ball has been the premiere leather event for South Florida, generating over $50,000 for local and national charities since its inception. This year promises to be a great success as well, with an anticipated attendance of over 1000 leather men and women from all over the nation and abroad. This year, the beneficiaries of The Leather Masked Ball are Equality Florida and the Leather Archives and Museum. An all-volunteer organization, The Leather Men's Brotherhood hosts several fund-raising events throughout the year, in addition to cultivating relationships with community sponsors in order to raise funds to defray the costs of producing The Leather Masked Ball. Therefore, one hundred percent of funds raised at The Leather Masked Ball are distributed to the designated charities. This holiday season is proving to be one of great opportunity for the residents of South Florida, in that they will have great choices of where to direct their charitable giving and leisure time. The Board of Leather Men's Brotherhood wishes White Party much continued success as they enter their 25th year. We look forward to seeing everyone at The Leather Masked Ball at Purgatory on November 27. Ken Fiegel, President Leather Men’s Brotherhood The MC Film Mail Bag Mark & Carrie, First, Mark thank you for being so kind to me the other day while trying on Go Softwear items. I will be back for a few pieces. There are so many great events coming up in the Tampa Bay area this month including the TPA In'tl Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, InterPride, and Aquafest Halloween Cruise. I know most of you want to look your best when in attendance. With the economy being as such, I really want to encourage everyone to support their locally owned businesses such as MC Film in GaYbor, Urban Body in SoHo, and The Row at International Plaza (lower level near Dillard's). MC Film has great swimwear from Unico & Go Softwear, Urban Body has awesome tanks by Whittall & Shon and underwear by Sweat Under Gear, and The Row has some great items by my favorite brand Rufskin and 55 DSL. All of the brands mentioned have a great selection $20-$50, and look fabulous. No one gives customer service like Mark & Carrie at MC Film, Scott Moore at Urban Body, or Jason, Eric, & Heather at The Row. They show a lot of love to the community, so let's show them some in return. Corey

Caught at Steam Fridays Early Gay Rights Brings New GLBTA Challenges Gay Rights Movement beginnings are set at the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, Stonewall Inn in New York City. That was an important date in Gay History. The day that we said that we wont' take police brutality, discrimination and abuse any longer. We acknowledge historical gay crusaders including; Julius Caesar, Plato, Socrates and Alexander the Great. But it was following the likes of the 1960's Black Civil Rights Movement years prior that we moved on in our fight. We are all equal, the constitution says so. . Most recently on CNN with Anderson Cooper, former President Bill Clinton said, " If I knew then what I know now, I would have made more positive changes to the gay community." It is all about educating. Now we have a progressive thinking Congress and a liberal minded president. But are we getting the equal rights gays were promised in the campaigns? "President Barack Obama, We Need Change, Equal Rights and Your Help Now!" Equality comes from ones giving up or sharing power and status. If you think that Americans are going to give up their religious upbringing toward gay tolerance, you are wrong! Yes, education is important. But the ways to educate the populous are not necessarily simple and safe. You have to make noise and you have to show unity. I believe that the GLBT community can't even achieve that and you yet want to push this down the straight community's throat? Again equality is equality and moving in a positive direction such as the National Equality March in Washington, October 10-11, is a another beginning for the GLBT equal rights cause. We are going to be there!! We are riding the busses to Washington, DC. We are going to march and demonstrate. We are going to voice our concerns about being an American and not having equal rights. We are gay and we are equal!! It is important to us. Recession or no recession, we have to live and be truthful with ourselves and be who we are. Being treated as second class citizens is not an option any longer! And if you are Gay then stand up and say so. October 11th, is National Coming Out Day. So we fight among our own gay friends and groups for identity, yet we are asking for a National covenant to treat us all equal. What is wrong with this picture? We have enough enemies already. We say..."Unite our community first then equality will follow." BACA Experiences Historic Ybor City This past week Ybor City businesses and a lot of GaYBOR District Coalition members threw a business showcase in sorts for the Tampa Bay Area Concierges, (BACA). The re-introduction of this historic destination in Tampa was one that unfolded for months. The Ybor City Development Corporation, part of the City of Tampa's governing body, helped with the Red Carpet event. Over 60 attendees had a chance to see and experience Ybor City hospitality, nightlife, food, the trolley and friendly residents. Guest goody bags were presented to each invited guest. GDC Members taking part were MC FILM, Laughing Cat Restaurant, Streetcar Charlie's, King Corona, Reservoir Bar, Ritz, Fresh Mouth, La France, Rock-n-Sports, Bernini's, Gaspar's Grotto, Honey Pot, Game Works, Mermaid Slipper, Ybor City Chamber of Commerce, Teatro on 7th and L 'Oliviers Bistro & Cabaret. And a hearty THANK YOU!!! All the concierge members had a great time and we all hope that they recommend Ybor City as a must stop for all travelers staying and visiting Tampa Bay! 5 Cent Trolley Rides? You have to be kidding? NOPE !!! Ride the trolley from Ybor City to Downtown Tampa for only a single nickel. Saturday, Oct. 10th! Clang, Clang, Clang Goes the Trolley Again!!! When the Streetcar Charlie's hit a drag queen lying down on her tracks the results were devastating for the trolley. We are glad to report that the trolley is now all repaired and back on her tracks at Streetcar Charlie's! By Janet Zink, St. Pete Times Staff Writer Posted: Oct 01, 2009 10:10 AM
TAMPA — The Tampa City Council agreed Thursday to explore adding transgender people to individuals protected under the city's human rights ordinance. The council made the decision after hearing from Philip Dinkins, chairman of the city's human rights board. "A need exists in our city for legal protection of these individuals from discrimination," Dinkins told the council. "Ensuring that the city of Tampa takes a strong stand against discrimination in all its forms will have a positive impact on our city's economic development. Progressive companies seek out communities committed to diversity and opposed to discrimination." Dinkins said no transgender individuals have filed complaints with the city's board regarding discrimination because the group is not a protected class. But he noted that the topic became highly publicized two years ago when Largo city manager Steve Stanton was fired when it was learned he planned to have sex change surgery. Now Susan Stanton, she has a job with a city on Florida's east coast. "While not happening in our community, it happened across the bay in a very visible situation," he said. Unlike gay people, transgender people can't hide their identity if they need or want to, he said, which makes legal protection even more important. Council members directed the administration and legal staff to research the matter and come back with a recommendation.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper Friday, Clinton explained that he still believes each state should decide whether to legalize gay marriage, but he is no longer personally opposed to it. Skip over this content Skip over this content "I think if people want to make commitments that last a lifetime, they ought to be able to do it," Clinton said. "I was against the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage nationwide, and I still think that the American people should be able to play this out in debates," the former president added. "But me, Bill Clinton personally, I changed my position." Asked what caused him to switch his stance, Clinton said he realized his support for other gay-rights issues -- such as adoption rights for same-sex couples -- didn't square with his position on marriage. "I realized that I was over 60 years old. I grew up in a different time ... and I was hung up about it," Clinton said. "I decided I was wrong." ************************************************************************ .. | South Florida Blade, writer AUG. 26, 2006 |
Anthony Deriggi, the owner and sole proprietor of the Schubert Resort, a 31-suite gay hotel in Fort Lauderdale, has begun serving a one-year federal prison sentence for tax evasion, according to court documents obtained from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami. Deriggi also owns the properties that house several gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses in Wilton Manors. Deriggi, 71, pled guilty Feb. 17 to one count of “structuring financial transactions” to evade IRS reporting requirements, according to court documents. He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined $20,000. He began serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Miami July 11. The prison’s website lists his projected release date as May 24, 2007. Deriggi owns several properties on Wilton Drive in the heart of the gay area of Wilton Manors, including the buildings that house Galanga restaurant, To the Moon, Ruff Riders, Sidelines bar and Dalilah Rose Salon. Good Morning Sunshines~ I know this may be a weird question but I wanted to see if there is anyone in the Gaybor community that is affiliated with a baby store . We have had Valerie Post's family staying with us for the past 5 weeks. Valerie is the young girl who got the swine flu and they had to take her baby 10 weeks early. Valerie has been in a coma and ICU since and her condition is deteriorating. Her mother is taking care of the infant as well as Valerie's 16 month old daughter. As you can imagine they are buried in medical and travel expenses and I am trying to help out just a little by collecting much needed supplies for the infant, Norah. If you have any ideas of anyone that may be interested in helping out please let me know.
