SKY SUNLIGHT SAXON of the psychedelic garage rock legends THE SEEDS passed away at 9:10am Thursday, June 25th, 2009 at St David's South Austin Hospital in Austin, Texas. Sky died of heart & kidney failure, due to an undiagnosed infection of his internal organs. He passed peacefully with his wife Sabrina Smith Saxon & his spiritual brother in YaHoWha Joshua Aquarian by his side. He died, in his words, at the age of "eternal".

SKY SUNLIGHT SAXON, fell ill as early as Thursday, June 18th in his new home in Austin. Despite feeling under the weather Saturday, he performed a short set of SEEDS classics at the local night club Antone's with his local collective WORLD SPIRITS, his favourite local Austin band SHAPES HAVE FANGS. After continuing illness, he was rushed to St David's South Austin Hospital Monday morning & was immediately placed in ICU. He remained in critical condition in ICU until his passing several days later. Sky & his wife Sabrina recently moved to Austin, following his exciting headlining performance at the Austin Psych Fest #2 in March. Several tours were scheduled, including the East Coast/Mid-West tour in August with the California Revue, with members of LOVE & THE ELECTRIC PRUNES. The tour will still continue despite his absence.

Sky had many projects in the works that will undoubtedly still be completed & released in the coming months if not years due to his wealth of creative material left behind. One of which is a documentary about his legendary band THE SEEDS to be released next year in 2010. The documentary chronicles the band's activities with exclusive interviews with all original members, & rare never-before-seen footage of the band live & in session. The project is spear-headed by Alec Palao of Ace Records U.K. (The Zombies' box set "Zombie Heaven") -

"Part of the impetus for the SEEDS documentary is to correct a lot of the misperceptions about the band," explains documentary-maker ALEC PALAO, "and to properly state their role and achievements, and celebrate their music for what it is. The band were way ahead of their time, which I realize more and more as I go thru the nuts and bolts of their recordings. Due to various circumstances beyond the band's control, the original integrity of what the band was doing got lumped in with the worst commercial hype of the psychedelic scene as it expanded. Ultimately it means that the hipsters and tastemakers got turned off by the hype, and those prejudices have remained with all the commentators and writers ever since. So THE DOORS remain hip and leaders and THE SEEDS are seen as commercial hippies, followers, or not even an authentic part of the initial movement, which of course is dead wrong. I'm doing my part to correct that!"

SKY SUNLIGHT SAXON BIOGRAPHY

From http://www.ponderosastomp.com:

During the mid 1960's, suburban garages across America rocked to the fuzz-drenched frenzy created by kids hoping to emulate THE SEEDS, one of the biggest and best bands to emerge from the phenomenon known as Garage Rock. The Seeds style was undeniably simple but nonetheless brilliantly original. Muddy Waters once called them, "America's own Rolling Stones".

The Seeds' debut album arrived in April 1966. Saxon's lyric's were infected by a wondrous charm, while the blend of British and blues influences served notice that The Seeds were developing a sound quite distinct from that of their "Louie Louie" based rivals. "Evil Hoodoo" is a piece of high octane freak-beat that was as much a genuine slice of punk as anything the late seventies punk explosion threw up. This sentiment of primal angst, as defined in the classic "Pushin' Too Hard", is the reason why Joey Ramone started singing in the first place, as the now deceased founder of punk titans, The Ramones, expressed in an interview.

Best known for their rock and roll standard "Pushin' Too Hard", the Seeds combined the raw appeal of garage rock with a fondness for psychedelia. They were the creation of charismatic vocalist Sky Saxon who, along with guitarist Jan Savage, recruited Daryl Hooper on keyboards and Rick Andridge on drums to unleash The Seeds onto the world. They soon signed to record biz pioneer Gene Norman's label Crescendo Records and debuted the 45 RPM, "Can't Seem Too Make You Mine" (1965). This was a slow, driving' number that highlighted Saxon's unique vocal style, and their patented Combo sound, which for the record, pre-dated the Doors! This single earned the band appearances on all the major variety shows at the time including American Bandstand and Shebang. "Pushin' Too Hard" was the anthem for a generation and hit number one in many cities across America including Los Angeles and New York and hit #36 on the Billboard national chart in 1966. It was based on a simple driving riff over which Sky vented and growled and was characterized by a masterful minimalism that would make the band a source of inspiration for countless bands to come (check out bands that have covered The Seeds). Their self titled debut LP had other great groovy stompers like "No Escape", "Nobody Spoil My Fun" and "Girl I Want You".

A second more adventurous LP, "A Web of Sound", appeared in October 1966. The album brimmed with rockin' mid-60's classics, including the fourteen-minute "Up in Her Room". Another smash on the American charts was the tightly grooving', pro-pot / working class anthem "Mr. Farmer."

The band then changed their garage style and threw the lot in with their emergent flower-power movement. The Seeds coined the term "Flower Power" only to watch it crumble in commercial media hype. The result was "Future" (1967). Saxon's compositions contained a strong element of acid-tinged horticultural playful whimsy as in "Travel with Your Mind" and "March of the Flower Children", while the band, like The Beatles, were innovators with Eastern-style instrumentation... Mega success seemed just around the corner, especially after their cameo appearance in the Jack Nicholson film "Psych Out" performing the song "Two Fingers Pointed at You" and a follow up 45, the moody, haunting, psychedelic rush of "Wind Blows Your Hair" (1967). At this point in their success the Seeds headlined over bands like The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Vanilla Fudge, Jefferson Airplane, The Kinks, Four Seasons, Diana Ross and The Supremes and others. They also split bill with Jimi Hendrix in New York City. One has to realize that the Seeds far surpassed the Garage rock label, what other garage band can boast selling out the Hollywood Bowl!

The next LP was A Spoonful Of Seedy Blues (1967), released under the moniker Sky Saxon Blues Band and featuring sleeve notes and songwriting collaboration by blues giant Muddy Waters. The Seeds were back with the 1968 album "Raw and Alive: Merlin's Music Box". This exciting live LP was recorded in Orange County California at Merlin's Music Box and produced a song that captured The Seeds at one of their most powerful moments, "I Can Satisfy You", Jan's scorching brilliant guitar and Daryl's wonderful contrapuntal bass and keyboards demonstrate one of the bands most vital ingredients-Intensity. Originally a single, this song was a powerhouse live. In later years, some called The Seeds "the original punk rock band". Although this was true as far as raw furor goes, their sophistication level was light years beyond this label, especially for the 60's.

Sky Sunlight Saxon left a huge legacy of music but more than that he left a legacy of touching so many people in positive ways and that is the best legacy any of us could hope for .....

Sky Sunlight Saxon was fearless and he met every day with a newfound hope that peace and love could someday rule this world - that someday all wolves and dogs would be taken care of and loved and that all people would cease to eat God's precious animals. He very deeply believed in YaHoWha and the teachings he learned from his spiritual Father and he spread that word to everyone he met. Many people began their own spiritual path after being witness to Sky's determination that everyone understand that they are indeed spiritual beings trying on this human body and human ways but that one day we all will shed this body and move into our etheric body of light where we then will be unfettered and can continue our work to help mankind and the universe from the other side. Sky Sunlight Saxon now fully Sunlight Arelich Aquarian is free from the restraints of this world and his human vehicle and remains with us in spirit and in his music. ~Sabrina Sincerity Enchantment Saxon~

Sky Interview w/ PennyBlackMusic UK 03/19/09 SXSW Austin, Texas

PB : Why the name Sky Sunlight Saxon ? Was this your birth name, or did you just think that it had a cool feel to it ?

SS : Sky Saxon to me was like my hero, Errol Flynn. The name sounded great and he was great and made great movies. Who could ever forget 'Robin Hood' ? Sunlight was given to me by my spiritual father, YaHoWha, a few years later. The three names together carry a lot of power and a lot of liberation. They are also energy names. It is like any movie star name. The movie star is not the person. The person is not the movie star. It is a whole new super identity. That gives me the power to stay young and be prolific.

PB : Why the name the Seeds? Is that about growth?

SS : The Seeds is grunge before grunge. People have said, "That person looks seedy. Or it is a seedy part of town." But in reality, seeds are all-life. Everything comes from a seed. Some seeds thrown on the cement don't sprout so when the seed of man becomes a sprout and can get no further it just dies its death. My new slogan is, "Seeds on Earth and in Space 21st Century."

The word 'Seeds' appears over 5000 times in the Bible - not so with the Beatles. The Seeds might quite possibly be one of the great rock names of all time. What can you grow from a Rolling Stones ? As I knew it, a rolling stone gathers no moss. It is just a rock'n'roll name. It meant even more with flower power which is also a part of my energy.

I'm also initiating now glow rock and trance music. Glow rock you will know it when you hear it. My band, World Spirits, is playing it now.It makes you happy when you hear it and excited. My trance music has come about because I've taken many trips and it puts the listener in a trance. Each song is an experience but a good experience. The name the Seeds didn't allow me to express myself fully.

I have other new bands now as well. Berlin Now was initiated by me in Berlin and has Rudi Patrudi in it, the Cheeks in it, the Polaroids in it, Manuela in it, as well as Atomic and myself. Some of our videos are showing up on YouTube.

My band which I made in Spain I call WOW Lost Brothers and Sisters - for that is what we all are. My last band - The Royal Family Band Save the World - is coming out with two great singles which are now out but in limited pressing. One is called 'Amnesty' and the other called 'Halt'. Also, I have a spiritual band called Sharing Shepherds which is just myself.

PB : How did the Seeds evolve ? Were you all at school or uni together ?

SS : We evolved through life. I went to UCLA and studied piano for a few semesters. Daryll Hooper was a natural and more like Beethoven. Rick Andridge (Drums-Ed) was an every boy in the neighborhood boy. Jan Savage (guitar-Ed) was truly an Indian, a Cherokee. I, myself, was like Johnny Appleseed. The combination was too great to just pass by. It has endured through the love of the people which I am very grateful for.

PB : I know the band through the six 60s LPs reissued by Edsel on 3 CDds in the early 2001, and your three more recent albums. I know nothing about the years in between. Did you still record and tour ?

SS : Sum it up like this. You can look at my biography on www.skysaxon.com but should also know I am going to be putting out the 'Lost Lost Lost Tapes' and some other recordings soon too. There is enough music that I have recorded to go into the 22nd Century !

PB : The Seeds are not just a psych garage band but most people know you because of 2 songs, 'Can't Seem to Make You Mine' and 'Pushin' Too Hard'. Do you think you get judged on those two songs too much ?

SS : What about 'Mr. Farmer' ? What about 'Thousand Shadows'? What about 'Evil HooDoo'? What about 'Fallen'? What about 'Six Dream'? What about 'Flower Lady and Her Assistant'? What about 'Chocolate Rivers'?

I wrote 76 songs with the Seeds. I consider them all to be classics to be discovered now or at a later date. It doesn't matter. They will always be classics. The people have told me so. I think I should be judged by my body of work - not two songs. I shouldn't be judged at all. I just wanted to help and give good music. God knows I haven't made any money on it. I do it for the love of the earth and the people and animals that walk upon it.

PB : Are there any films made on the band or books written on the band worth checking out ?

SS : Only bootlegs to my knowledge. But there is a new documentary in production now about the Seeds along with a re-release of all the early albums. This is being done by Alec Palao and sould be a great and well-done documentary. Stay tuned at www.skysaxon.com for all new news of this and everything else happening with me.

PB : You were around at the same time as the Doors and Love. Were you friends ? Were you close ? Do you miss those two characters no longer with us?

SS : We were always friends, great friends but I believe the Seeds were around first. I miss Arthur Lee very much but don't wish to join him and I think Arthur Lee should be remembered also for his saying, "People are the greatest fun" which I totally agree with, but I find dogs are more fun still. They are always there to cheer you up and make you laugh and help you when you cry.

PB : Are all the original band alive and well ?

SS : They are all alive but Rick Andridge unfortunately has dementia and does not remember anything. Everyone else is alive and well. Daryll Hooper played on my latest Seeds album, 'Back To The Garden'. This album can be purchased by going to www.skysaxon.com.

PB : What were your influences originally. What was the game plan ?

SS : My original influence was classical music. I loved it. After that it was the blues. I thought I could be a solo artist. With Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley and people like that, it was hard to do that unless you were on a major label.

I would not get on my knees for a major label, so I decided that a band was the only way to go but it needed to have a piano because everyone else at the time had only guitars. I needed the piano to express my words better.

PB : The 60s were a cool time. What was your favourite period and why ?

SS : Actually my favorite period was 1964 because that is when the Beatles came. My favourite period after that was 1965 because that is when my music happened as well as a lot of other great music. There was so much great music that could bring tears to your eyes, but where are these bands today ? I hope they are all okay and that God has blessed them.

PB : Would you change anything if you could ?

SS : I would have paid my income tax and not lost my two homes in Malibu to the IRS in the late 60's. I would never have taken loans on my publishing rights and have them taken from me so that I now have 0% publishing rights to my old songs. Those are two things I would change for sure.

PB : On the live Seeds album things sound pretty much like Beatlemania. Did you like all the attention ?

SS : Absolutely, unequivocably. The limos were the best. To me that is one of the keys. Arrive in a limo and leave in a limo.

PB : What keeps you writing and performing when you could be happy and be retired ?

SS : Well, I think you could retire when you die. I don't, however, believe in death, so I guess I will retire when I leave my body. But I plan to continue writing and performing in heaven. It is my mission. I have a lot of callings in life and ways to make a lot of money, but I stay true to music for I believe just like 2 + 2 = 4 it opens the door to understanding throughout the world.

PB : You are reunited with Daryll on this new album. How did that come about ?

SS : That was always in the works. Daryll and I have written many songs. A song I wrote with him that has not come out yet is 'Paper Money'. It is so good. We shouldn't sell our souls for paper money. Daryll and I have always been and always will be great brothers and friends. I look to the time when Daryll and I can play what we deserve which is colosseums with our friends.

PB : Was writing the three recent albums easier ? Does writing get easier with age ?

SS : Since I don't write it is hard to answer that. I channel. I, however, refine it after I make the first recording. It is usually straight by the third or fourth recording.

PB : Do you have any plans to come back and tour Europe again ?

SS : I just got back from Europe but Europe is my second home or maybe it could be my first home. It pulls me like a magnet. I'm magnetized by the beauty of the people and their beautiful energy. A tour is in the works for this summer, probably June and July. But then I have to come back to America for a tour in the states with Love and Electric Prunes in August. I will return to France to work on a collaboration with Etant Donnes' in September. They are great brothers and I look forward to an amazing collaboration with them.

PB : What are your future plans ?

SS : That strikes a bell in my head because I want to make the album, 'Future Revisited', but this time I will use a philharmonic symphony maybe from Germany or England or even Austria. It will be a 4-volume set. My wife and I now have a flat in Austin, Texas and hope to find a enchanting dwelling in Europe. We will be looking for that place on our next visit this summer.

PB : Thanks for your time, Stay beautiful, Sky.

SS : Thanks so much. You are beautiful too.

Sky has improved a little today ... I say that but I also want to stress that he is seriously ill and is heavily sedated. He is not responsive when being talked to so I'm not sure if he hears or not. He is still in danger. I am playing his music for him ... Right now I have Back To The Garden on. He always likes hearing his own music when he isn't feeling well and it always helps so we are hoping he is hearing somewhere deep in the recesses of his mind ... The nurses and doctors are enjoying it too! I have the slideshow from his myspace site playing continuously on my computer ... helping me project him up and laughing and performing and talking and having a good time being alive! TODAY: His main doctor tells me that this process is going to be a crawl ... very slow ... They are trying now to just get rid of the infection and to keep his organs running and get him into a truly stable doing everything on his own situation. We are NOT there yet. This is not going to be a situation where he wakes up any day now and is okay. He has a long long way to go so although he is improving it is at a very slow pace. At this point I am not allowing visitors into the room. I do not believe that Sky would want people to see him with the breathing machine and all of this stuff. Once he is able to be more awake and if he communicates with me that that is what he wants then I will allow it. People are welcome to come and be here in the hospital and in the ICU waiting room and I'll be happy to come and sit with you and talk and give updates and all of that. I am here 24/7 except once a day after the doctors make their rounds and update me when I run home and feed our dog, take a shower, do some basic stuff, and I head right back. I also am very vigilent and if I think something doesn't look right or isn't working right I go to the nurse. The nurses are amazing and have no problem with me doing this. I'm not overbearing about it. I just want you all to know that I am your ears and eyes because I know everyone wants to be here so I promise I am watching and making sure he is taken care of. Nurses have sooo much to keep up with and they do an amazing job but it doesn't hurt to have an extra set of eyes. I have an amazing support system here with the boys from the and ... World Spirits / Shapes Have Fangs --- Dustin has been an amazing support just showing up with fruit and nuts and tea and just sitting with me and talking --- the rest of the boys: Joshua, Evan, Skylar, James (videographer for the band) ... also Donny and Jessica! Kevin Phillips! Brian Curley! Sue Davis!!! Christian Bland of the Black Angels .... We are so appreciative of all of you for being willing to do whatever needs to be done ... to help me out so that I can be here for Sky. He is going to get through this. I just know it. With your continued support and positive vibes and thoughts and prayers, he will pull through. Some details: *** Blood Pressure GOOD *** Heart Rate GOOD *** Lungs CLEAR *** Kidneys - not good and not producing Temporary dialysis will begin tomorrow or next day per his Kidney Doctor *** He is receiving blood now and already the nurses tell me they can see an improvement *** He is still too sick for the gastro doc to put the scope in to see what is happening down in his gut .... but that will happen eventually ... Patience seems to be the word now .... Patience .... LOVE LOVE LOVE to each of you and now I'm going to go send this update out to the email distribution and post to myspace.com/theseeds ... then I'm going to try to answer individual messages ... so bear with me, okay? We have been thinking of ways to try to be able to really get as many of Sky's fans in one place so that it will be much easier to make sure as many as possible know what is going on with him now, in the past, and in the future. It will take a while to find everyone but here's a start! Let's make this a happening forum!!!

QUOTE from AUSTIN360.com blog regarding Sky at PsychFest2:
"The other ringer is Sky Saxon, genuinely legendary guitarist with ’60s garage monsters the Seeds. Saxon will be hanging out and signing at Antone’s Record Shop the Saturday before Psych Fest (March 7) at 4 p.m. This is his first appearance in Austin. Expect a set from Austin rockers (and Saxon’s Austin back up band) Shapes Have Fangs ..."
