September 25, 2009 - Friday
Join us First Friday October 2nd for "Arrowed" where we will be displaying work by guest artist Natalie Lowry.

Natalie is a veterinary student and a taxidermist. She is quiet, well-mannered, and often creative. After earning a useless degree in French Literature from the University of San Francisco in 2005, she went on to attend Second Nature School of Taxidermy outside of Missoula, Montana in 2006.

Natalie is currently earning her DVM at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. If she isn't at the hospital treating animals, she's in her studio at home stuffing them. However, if the fur market is down, she dabbles in other artforms including pastel, watercolor, and pen & ink. A recent disciple of steam punk, she is also self-taught in the craft of electroplating.

Natalie employs a multitude of mediums to explore the human-animal bond, most noteably by finding life in the dead.

We will also be featuring a guest appearance by painter Rachel Herrera.

DJ "bluchris" will be spinning some great sounds for your listening pleasure.

Come celebrate two great years of outstanding art with us for our biggest show of 2009, First Friday, September 4th from 6-10pm. To help us mark this stupendous occasion we will be displaying guest artist Evan Levin for one night only. Evan is coming all the way from Florida to share his amazing body of work. Evan's paintings embody the original look and unique approach that has been the trademark of The Gallery Underground over the past two years.

We are brightening the place up a bit as well with a fresh coat of paint and some new lighting. You won't want to miss this show!

New work by artists; Kieth Van Eron, Andi Rose, Reindeer, Chelsea Glanz, Travis Parry,
Bryan Collins, Ryan Gualaume, Forrest Gerke, Oscar Woodruff, Cody Kuehl, Rolfe Bautista, Kirsten Savage and Darren Mahuron.

Sponsored by New Belgium.

Be there or be square.

Evan Levin is a Pensacola native who has increasingly dedicated himself to his highly stylized, easily identifiable brand of art-making. Having graduated form Pensacola Catholic High School, Levin moved to Sarasota to attend Ringling School of Art and Design. Concentrating in the area of illustration, he received his BFA and relocated back to Pensacola where he opened Gallery 11 in downtown Pensacola in May 2004.

Looking to evolve his personal style, he headed off to Atlanta for a short stint at Atlanta College of Art before returning home once again in 2005. After a hiatus spent pursuing business endeavors, Levin’s artistic drive soon reared its head again, and in June 2008, he moved to New York City seeking the inspiration to once again expand his artistic horizons.

“New York was great because I could go to a gallery and see paintings by artists that I had previously only been able to see in magazines like Juxtapoz,” says Levin. “I think living in New York City helped me push my characters to a new level.”

In February 2009, Levin returned to Pensacola once again, ready to unleash his beautifully surreal creations on the art-lovers of Pensacola. Recently his work was featured at the popular nightclub Suite during July’s Gallery Night. Levin is preparing for an upcoming show in Fort Collins, CO as well as displays at Jeweler’s Trade Shop and Jackson’s for the September 18th Gallery Night.

For those unfamiliar with his work, Levin’s art leans heavily towards the dark and childishly surreal realms inhabited by people like Tim Burton. His paintings and drawings feature numerous characters and environments that are equal parts odd, vibrant and awe-inspiring.
“I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I always had a sketchbook with me when my parents took me to dinner or on trips. And in school, I was always doodling in class and taking any open electives as art classes,” says Levin. “I draw with a Bic pen, and the process is tedious and slow,” adds Levin. “Finished drawings take an average of five to six hours to complete. For my oil paintings, I’ll choose a character from my sketchbook as a subject.”
