Monthly Céilí & House Party 26 DECEMBER
The Craobh Úll Mór CCÉ Céilí began in December, 2005, due primarily to the generosity of Fr. Colm Campbell and the New York Irish Center. We hold an informal lesson at 7pm, and live music begins at 8pm.

WE HOLD THIS EVENT ON THE 4TH SATURDAY of each month, September through June. We meet at the New York Irish Center of Queens, which is just a few steps from the no. 7 subway. There is plenty of free, safe, well-lit parking available, too.

The dance schedule offers set dancing, with a few céilí dances and waltzes, as well. We pride ourselves on our BEGINNER and family-friendly, welcoming atmosphere – ALL are welcome! Our function feels more like a house party than an organized, structured dance event. You need not know how to dance to join us, and listeners are most welcome, too!

LIVE MUSIC is provided by Ceol na gCroí Céilí Band: flute player LINDA HICKMAN, All-Ireland champion JOHN NOLAN on button accordion, KEITH SAMMUT on keyboard and band leader / founder, BRENDAN FAHEY, who plays céilí drums. These musicians find great joy in playing for dancers. The love of the tradition and the respect they have for one another is clearly expressed through their music. No wonder, then, that the band name means "Music from the Heart"!

This is the official web site of Craobh Úll Mór CCÉ, the New York City Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, maintained and updated by current Branch members ~ the ONLY web site sanctioned by the Branch Committee. Craobh Úll Mór CCÉ was founded in 1997 by musician and dancer Niall O'Leary, who served as Branch Chair for nine years.

We are an international organization (pronounced "coal-tis kyol-tory air-in")  dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of Irish traditional music, dance, language, song and culture. Loosely translated, it means "gathering of Irish musicians."

Founded in Dublin in 1951, CCÉ now has more than 400 branches promoting the traditional arts of Ireland around the world, including some unexpected countries: Hungary, Sweden, Australia, Japan, Italy, to name but a few.

CCÉ has no religious or political agenda, and you do not have to be Irish to join or to attend our events. Comhaltas is open to anyone interested in traditional Irish culture. We always welcome new supporters to our growing organization! Our events offer a friendly, informal atmosphere that members of all ages will enjoy.

On Saturday, May 16th, Ceol na gCroí Céilí Band members Brendan Fahey, Linda Hickman and John Nolan each received the "Friends of Úll Mór" Award, presented by Craobh Úll Mór CCÉ. This is the first time the award was presented, and we honored those who have helped to keep the Branch "alive and well." A home-cooked dinner preceded the monthly céilí. During the evening, each recipient was awarded a plaque and a yellow rose, symbolizing friendship, presented by the Branch Chair.

The awards were held in conjunction with the annual Branch Musicians' Night, where the entire band was featured (Brendan, Linda, John, Bernadette Fee, Keith Sammut). At this yearly event, each musician receives a small token of appreciation from the Branch céilí committee.

November 15, 2008 - Saturday

We have lost another musical icon: our dear friend Joe Madden has passed on. He was a great accordion player from Galway and influenced many of the best traditional musicians in the New York area down through the years.

Joe suffered serious damage to his spinal cord in a fall at his home last weekend (Nov. 8). After major surgeries to try to stabilize his condition, he was removed from life support this evening (Friday) and passed away.

He will be terribly missed by his wife Helen, his daughter Joanie and her six siblings, as well as all of those whom he befriended through his music. Please send your prayers, positive thoughts and good wishes to Joe's family during this difficult time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
