Organization
Philly Gamers [PHL] is a video game tournament promotions group based in the Philadelphia suburbs.  The crux of Philly Gamers is to organize and promote console based tournaments focusing on competitive and fun game play for the widest range of gamers.  And through the tournaments raise the overall level of competitive video game play in the Delaware Valley.

Sponsorships
Philly Gamers looks at sponsorship as a two way street.  Just as we expect support from the companies that sponsor us, we support our teams.  In return, we expect our teams to promote us.

PHL is not currently looking to expand it's roster.  But when we do, we will be looking for high profile, competitive teams competiting in LAN's and online events based primarily in the Delaware Valley.  This includes the Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey tri-state area.  We will only be sponsoring teams who can participate in PHL promoted events.

Games
As of Summer '08, PHL runs games in Four divisions.
Shooters Division: Halo 3,COD4,GOW
Music Division: Guitar Hero 3,Rock Band
Sports Division: Madden 08 (Madden 09 coming soon)
Fighters: SSB Brawl and Guilty Gear

At this time we are working on game types and rule sets for several of our games including Call of Duty 4, Gears Of War, and Rock Band. This 3 games will be added to our event list at later dates.

Gameplay
In an effort to promote fun, competitive game play, we have developed our own rule sets and maps to promote exciting, fast-paced and competitive game play. But while we would like to promote our maps and game types at all our events we always look to the players themselves for input and that is why for the current summer season we are running all current versions of the MLG maps and the MLG TS v5 game type.

The PHL "Shoot2Kill" maps are available to download on our website at PhillyGamers.net.  This team slayer game type removes gravity hammers, plasma swords and vehicles from the map.  It also turns off radar.  This focuses the game on the player's ability to aim and shoot rather than rewarding a player's twitch reflex. We hope to use our maps and game types in future events.

Entry Fees and Eligibility...

PHL reserves the right to refuse entry to any person, team or faction for any reason.  We will deny entry to individuals who act in a disrespectful manner towards PHL staff, other players, or employees of our host venue.  Any person engaging in any form of hate speech, or threatening actions will be denied entry or ejected from the event..

Entry fees are posted well in advance and are usually between $25and $30 per individual player.  Philly Gamers is run independently from any venue we may use.   Prize money comes directly from entry fees along with prizes from our sponsors.

Our winter season will be announced soon .
Friday, June 06, 2008

We have been flying fairly under the radar the last few weeks, but with just one month left until the start of our Summer Season, we're turning up the heat.  Looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends from our Media War Memorial Auditorium days as we start running events in Drexel Hill, PA.

We announced our Halo 3 gametypes today.  And in a move that will surprise some PHL Old Heads, we have decided to use MLG v5 rules.  We explain the decision in a post over at Clantacular.com.

With one month left until the start of the 2008 Summer Season, Philly Gamers is pleased to announce the finalized ruleset and maps for the Halo 3 Doubles Division. For the 2008 Summer Season, we will be using mlg v5 TS rules and maps. To avoid any possible confusion, we will use v5 rules for the entire Summer Season. A decision for the Winter Season (which we expect will begin in October), will be made no less than one month prior to the season. We are still only running 2v2 events, and will only be using Team Slayer. After playing several different gametypes, we decided that the most competitive ruleset available to us was the mlg set. We also acknowledge that many of our dyed-in-the-wool PHL players dedicate many hours every week to practicing on mlg maps. We do not want to put any player at a disadvantage, and since mlg games are available in match making, they are universal enough that any player with any interest in tournament or competitive play, or even a casual LAN experience can familiarize him or herself with the gametype and maps prior to the first event of the season. It is our hope that by using the widely accepted mlg ruleset and maps, will help to establish PhillyGamers as the Delaware Valley's premier console based eSports league. This decision is the latest, but by no means the last we will make to ensure that our players are playing the most competitive maps and rules available in the Halo community. None of this, however, changes the fact that Sundance DiGiovanni wears stupid ass track suits. We will need a few players to bring HDD's to faciliate the v5 map set which includes DLC maps. (Please PM me or Saint for details.) The season starts in one month. Make your plans. Philly will never be the same.

Keep checking back over the next month for more information.

We are just about 24 hours removed from Philly Gamers' first foray into game conventions.

Thanks to Paul and Chuck at Too Many Games for being gentle, and providing a very loving, and tender environment for us.  We were very comfortable with giving them our big V card.

I can't say the day went off without a hitch, there were some power supply issues.  But these were not in Chuck & Paul's control, and the building's staff worked quickly to resolve them for us.  So those headaches shouldn't be a negative reflection at all on the convention's staff.

We rode through to Reading Saturday night, and got to our hotel early enough to catch the last five minutes of the Flyers on the web.  And Sidney...wear a cup, we're coming for you, son.  We ate a quick dinner and called it a night.

Sunday is when the real fun began.  Once we got past the power issues, things began to run very smoothly.  We featured Halo 3 8-man FFA's and 2man 4-team multiteam games along with COD 8 man FFA's.  As soon as we got 8 people signed up for one game, we sat them and they played.  $5 a head, winner got $15, a T-shirt and a PhillyGamers.net bracelet.  And we sat down 8 more.  We were running games constantly the whole day, and when we did finally take a lunch break.  We felt quite a bit like a bleeding simmer in a shark cage at feeding time.

And by the way, thanks to the players for cooperating, and not bitching about having to play default maps or rules.  It was a convention, everybody was there to have fun, and I think everybody had a great time.

We were also fortunate enough to meet a lot of very cool people in the video game scene.  Met DJ Pretzel from OCRemix.org, Robert fom MAG Fest, Ed from VGXPO and Paul from Zenkaikon.  A lot of people we're anxious to work with.

There are a handful of pictures up at Clantacular.com.  More pictures are coming.

First of all, the Flyers, baby.  The fucking Flyers.  Hell yeah.

Anyway, Grand Theft Auto 4 comes out in about an hour and fifteen, and I know a good lot of you are already in line.  So when you have your fill of wanton destruction and read this.  I hope it's worth while.  I will not have a copy for quite a while.

We are now in Too Many Games mode.  This Sunday we will be in beautiful downtown Reading, home of Donyell Marshall, Dolores Wells and conjoined twins Lori and Reba Schappell.  We will be running 8-man Halo 3 FFA's and Call of Duty FFA's all day long.  $5 entry fee, $15 to every winner.  We also have some Glitch Gear T-shirts, and a couple headphones from SteelSeries we need to figure out what to do with.  We may have some more surprises up our sleeves as well.

By the way, three past PHL Champions will be in attendance.  Adrian "Unaffiliated" Sosa will be representing the PHL in TMG's National Guitar Hero Championship.  And two time PHL Halo 3 Doubles champions team So Wrong's Ch0i and Tri0 (AKA: Rated |R|, AKA: Vitamin Water, AKA: Haloster and Blastercrombie) will be sitting in on some Halo FFA's taking your money.

So come out, support independently run video game companies and artists, and meet Team PHL.

For more information consult your local Oracle.  or visit TooManyGames.com.

The last two weeks have been pretty crazy.  As you saw from the last post, we have 8 of our own systems, and 8 matching 22" HD monitors.  We also have an HD projector and a 106" screen.

There are a lot of things that are so fucking close to being official that I can taste it.  New sponsors (we're two sponsors away from officially having "mad sponsoreorres), new events, new games and new gametypes.  I count a lot of you as friends, even if we just bullshit on XBL and poop on randoms in Halo.  So biting my tounge and not telling you what's really going on in the Danger Dungeon is tough.

What I can tell you is that next Sunday we'll unveil an assload of new stuff (including all those Xboxes in the last post) at the Too Many Games convention in Reading, PA.

Make sure you're there.  We'll also have some 1" buttons and silicone bracelets so you guys can start rocking the PHL logo.  Baby steps.  T-shirts and stickers are on the way.

There is going to be a day in the next week or two when you get on MySpace and see "Philly Gamers has posted a blog", and it will be a blog so full of awesomeness in generations to come the post will be referred to as the "Schukyll River Scrolls".  Generations to come will refer back to this single post for guidance in life choices.  This post that has yet to be written will end global warming, find world peace, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.  Followers of false relgions will throw down their golden idols and worship at the PHL altar.

...

Did I go to far with that last one?

But yeah, things are in the works.  We didn't buy those Xboxes because we had the money and nothing better to blow it on.  If we had dropped that cabbage on just hookers we'd be knee deep in strange for a month.

But no, instead of satisfying the needs of the flesh, we instead spent all that squash on you guys.  With this gear and everything else we've got working, the tournaments you guys attend in the summer of '08 will be the best you've ever seen.
