What's up my fellow beat-makers and enthusiasts. I'm sure many of you are aware of Red Bull's "Big Tune" Beat Battle Event.

We want to make sure we have a strong representation for the event here. We encourage all of you to register and try to bring the "Crown" to MPLS!!

To register for the Minneapolis battle, go to http://www.redbullbigtune.com

-The EVENT:
First Avenue
Wed, Aug 26th
ages 18 & Up
Doors at 8 PM

-Here's some background info and the registration info:

Red Bull Big Tune is the nation's premiere head-to-head producer battle, established to showcase the musical talents of emerging as well as established music producers. Created by DJ/producer/emcee -- Vitamin D and Music Manager/Program Director -- Jonathan Moore in 2004, the program is in its 3rd national tour and is excited to stop at the legendary First Avenue on Wednesday August 26th, doors at 8pm.

All local and regional producers are eligible to compete in the Minneapolis Red Bull Big Tune. The organizers will narrow all submissions down to 12 producers who will go head to head at First Avenue to decide who will represent Minneapolis in the national finals in Atlanta later this year. Last's year's national winner, C-Sick (Chicago), got to record a song with the one and only Nas at Red Bull Records' recording studio in Santa Monica.

Red Bull Big Tune is inspired by the spirit of Jamaican Reggae/Dance Hall culture where the term 'Big Tune' is derived. In traditional Jamaican dancehall culture a battle is referred to as a "clash". Selectors (DJ's) would "clash" with other selectors by spinnign the latest/heaviest "Riddim" (songs). DJ's would record their own artistic interpretation or version of a standard "Riddim" that selectors would play in the dancehall. Whichever version that was most favored by the people was considered the: "Big Tune."

My man Antonio Rodriguez hooked another promo video for the main event tomorrow. It uses clips from the first event with the artists in the studio. The instrumental used is the beat Medium Zach made for Carnage at the event. Then it all ends with "Rebel Music", the track made that day by Felipe Cuauhtli (Los Na) & X:144...the full joint!

Peep It Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_UzHelUk3M

Enjoy that and then come out to the event tomorrow at Fifth Element. If you aren't in the Twin Cities then peep it online: http://www.livestream.com/contentunderpressure

It's a different challenge this time because the artists don't have studios just their samplers/laptops, creativity and 3 hours to make it work!!

The only way to apply for the Redbull Music Academy is come to the event and get an application/CD!

Just in case, for those that don't know, Red Bull Music Academy is a pretty cool venture. There's a lot to it but basically every year the academy accepts applications from musicians of all types, varying ages, varying degrees of success (unknown to established), all walks of life, and all of the world. It's a lengthy process but they go thru it and pick the top applicants for that years "academy". If accepted the artists all go to special location together (they've gone to London, Barcelona, etc...) and do various workshops, lectures, recording, performances, etc... They have special guest like Chuck D, Dennis Coffey, etc... give lecture and also work in the studio with the applicants. It's a pretty amazing program, check out more info here: http://redbullmusicacademy.com/

First off, wanted to thank everyone who helped make Content Under Pressure #1 such a success!! It's now time for our 2nd installment and for this one we dig into the rising talents of the Minneapolis Twin Cities Scene.

Before I get into the detail, I have to mention that the response/submissions for this event were great and made selecting just 5 from each category (MC/Producer) a very difficult task. In Fact, so difficult that we've decided to add the Content Under Pressure theme to our regular monthly  Last Of the Record Buyers Event! For the time being, every month we select one producer and one MC to do the Content Under Pressure task. We have already selected our first several pairs and this will start with the July 16th date!

OK, back on track to the event at hand!

REDBULL MUSIC ACADEMY & LAST OF THE RECORD BUYERS PRESENT: Content Under Pressure #2

-The Invited Artists:

1)PRODUCERS: GMO, Mike Swoop, Cory Grindberg, Baby Gracious &
   Cayriss
2)MCS: Ibe, Yakub, Chantz, Prizm, & Truth Be Told

-The Event: On the day of the event the artists will be randomly put together and be given 3 hours to prepare a song to perform that same night. Artists will be set up at various tables in 5th Element and prepare their song with mobile production units and headphones. Customers/Fans will be able watch the whole process while shopping or just hanging out. It will also be streamed live on the internet. Producers can make a beat on the spot or bring a variety of beats for the MC to choose from, but should be able to "arrange" the track specifically for the event regardless. MCs can do a pre-written song (must be an unreleased song) or write on the spot but they can NOT freestyle.

-The Point: To show artists how to work in a high pressured situation that could require being prepared to collaborate other artists with limited time. A situation similar to the one presented at Red Bull Academy as well as what could occur in real life situations. Plus give the rising talent an opportunity to do what the do best in a public setting to help encourage networking and promotions.

-Oh yeah, there will be one "SPECIAL" artist pairing with two key local Minneapolis artists as an added bonus! I can't announce them or then they would know who they are working with.... :)

Last Of The Records Buyers (A.K.A LRB) is a monthly event for “producers and those who love them”. Every month any and all producers are invited out to bring their beats on CD or IPOD and take 3 minutes to share their work with the crowd. All you need is your beats and to arrive early to sign up. Each month we also have a Featured Producer who does an extended set that night. There is also the potential for spontaneous battles, surprise performances, Sample/Remix Challenges, & other musical treats.

After doing the event for a year and ½ at the Dinkytowner we needed to relocate the event. However, we predict this change will create a growth for the LRB experience so come out and check us at the new location: Fifth Element! The store will remain open during the event with vinyl sales as well as other special promotions in the works. –Kevin Beacham

Monday, May 04, 2009

What up beat lovers! I know I have been saying I would regularly update this page with beats people give me at LRB and tracks I got get from producers around the world....but my schedule has been bonkers to say the least.

Anyway, I'm finally on it and I'll try to keep it moving. I added 6 new beats today. Check out em out, drop some feedback, and let your peoples know to listen in.

Here's what we go this week:

1)Abstract Rude-Rejuvenation: Produced by Vitamin D, this is the title track from the

Rhymesayers album dropping tomorrow (5-5-09)! Vitamin Produced the whole album

and it's filled with ill beats. For info on how to get all the album instrumentals as well

as grab a link to download the instrumental and the acapella (flip your own remix!)

peep the blog from last week for details

      www.myspace.com/abstractrude

2)Sevadar Sehaj-Got this at the Feb '09 LRB. If you ever been to LRB then chances

are you have heard his beats and his "banter"...ha. Not only does it come with

tight beats but free entertainment as well. Beyond that he's got some tracks on the

new Toki Wright "A Different Mirror" album dropping in June!

   www.myspace.com/sevadarsehaj

3)The Whole Truth-This is from LRB Mar '09. He had a few beats on the CD but this

is the main one that grabbed my attention. I just like the vibe, it's perfect for the

Spring weather to me. The beat he gave me was only like a minute long but I

I made a extended version to use for Redefinition Radio a few weeks and now it

can rock a lil longer on here as well as you cool out.

   www.myspace.com/truthmusik

4)Yakub-The "Mad Scientist" indeed! He seems to always have a CD full of new beats

at LRB. This is also from Mar '09 and this CD had about 19 beats on it. There's

a wide range of stuff on there but I decided to roll with this one. It's the first track

on the CD and helps set the mood right...

   www.myspace.com/yakubproductions

5)Dimitry Killstorm-Another one from Feb '09. It's got the "energy" to it. It seems like

you should be accomplishing something while listening to this...ha. He always comes

down with his CD formatted to the 3 minute limit (which we appreciated). Every

once in a while when he gives me a CD I'll pull out a certain beat that catches my

attention, this is that beat this time.

    www.myspace.com/brainstormbeats

6)Cliff Rhymes-This is from Nov '08 so I'm reaching back a bit. This is the first and the

only time I remember him coming thru (but I might be wrong about that). I recall

this beat caught my attention that night and I asked him for the CD, I'm a sucker

for reverse samples so that helps...ha. This is one of those beats that I think is

good to freestyle to and just zone out. I'm not sure of what his music page is so

hopefully come thru with more joints soon.

Aight, that's all we got this time around. Remember leave your beats CDs with us at LRB and you might get some extra shine on the page here or on Redefinition Radio. Peace- Kevin Beacham

THIS JUST IN: THE DINKYTOWNER IS CLOSING BUT LRB DON'T STOP!! WE WILL BE HAVING THE EVENT AT FIFTH ELEMENT (2411 HENNEPIN AVE). SAME DATE, SAME TIME (START AT 9 AND OVER WHEN WE HAVE GONE THRU THE PRODUCERS LIST). SPREAD THE WORD!
