wonderful. wonderful. christian of phonogarde and heathore kelday of herself and catherine maclellan all joined packed crowds at the sheep.

Thursday night at the sheep, Saturday in St. Jean Sur Richelieu and then back Sunday to the blacksheep. The crowd was so packed in, no one noticed that the furnace had quietly turned off (the fuel fellows had forgotten to come the day before!) because the room was packed with people! The next little run into NY, PA and throughout QC (two shows in the nation's headquarters and a wrapup final show at club soda in mtl), and then home for a rest.
Thanks to everyone who has come out and supported shows.

st. jean sur richelieu was a hoot - it was great to see pascale and mathieu with the band, and also catch a treat with the wooden sky.

so the shows were great. darren johnston channels louis armstrong something fierce, and the crowds bought all the albums i had. saw kent and his partner at the railway, as as sandra engstrom, the first person who ever presented a show in wolfville, and marc thususka, a transplanted waterloo-ite making his claim on the boom town that is calgary.

lethbridge was a fun, noisy little show - the two brothers who own the slice were very welcoming, and crowd members broke off from the chatter to listen. looking forward to going back.

alberta is fascinating - check this out: http://tothetarsands.ca/

closed burger kings due to lack of staff. walmart signing bonuses. its a province frothing at the mouth. i'm only worried that i met too few people who were actually interested in staying there for good.

i'm sitting in the royal hotel, est. 1898, at the base of the mountains, girded by CN track that runs into the mountains towards the vancouver ports. I'm staring up at a deer head with horns stretching 5 feet wide.

a new song i've been covering at shows by patty griffin.

"Making Pies"

It's not far
I can walk
Down the block
To TableTalk
Close my eyes
Make the pies all day

Plastic cap
on my hair
I used to mind
Now I don't care
I used to mind
Now I don't care
Cause I'm Gray

Did I show you this picture of my nephew
Taken at his big birthday surprise
At my sister's house last Sunday
This is Monday and we're making pies
I'm making pies
Making pies
Pies

Thursday nights
I go and type
Down at the church
With Father Mike
It gets me out
And he ain't hard to like
At all

Jesus stares at me
In my chair
With his big blue eyes
And his honey brown hair
And he's looking at me
Way up there
On the wall

Did I show you this picture of my sweetheart
Taken of us before the war
Of the Greek and his Italian girl
One Sunday at the shore

We tied our ribbons to the fire escape
They were taken by the birds
Who flew home to the country
As the bombs rained on the world

5am
Here I am
Walking the block
To TableTalk
You could cry or die
Or just make pies all day
I'm making pies
Making pies
Making pies
Making pies

currently driving through the prairies. long low and straight, accompanied by hydro lines. death cab and gillian welch on iTunes.

i've been trying to stay slim on the sends, but there may be a few more coming your way (a few shows being added!).

thunderbay was perfect - both shows crammed and full of people singing - thanks to mike, pete, sarah and wolf who created an impromptu litle band - i never thought that 'when people go' could be a spiritual / revival type song, but it exceeded my most evangelical expectations.

onto winnipeg - the cyrk was perfect, as was hanging with fellow artists jacob and lilly (aka karla + caleb). their album is up for best new folk album of the year. check them out - www.jacobandlilly.com

brandon was a fortune cookie of a show - given that it was a tuesday night, i expected a few people out. the room ended up streaming in with 50 people, and even the infantry + reservists who started the night off loudly, ended up just listening (feeding the love monster as one put it). had a great time debating canada's military approach and asking them about military life in general.

Goodnight (Go Home)
the album has exceeded all my expectations in terms of support from listeners. we've run out of the first pressing and have ordered a second batch to be delivered before i head out east.

iTunes is in the queue, but you can order a copy here from maplemusic.

porchlight.

1 month down, 1 more month left in
i can't wait to see you again
i'm going to hold you so tight
untill my heart gets unbroken.

some of us got lost
the rest of got found
mortgaged, cars, dogs, kids in the suburbs in-town
what happened to the fireworks?
what happened to the promises spoken?

all my friends are someplace else
i'm stuck out here by myself
leave our porchlight on and
your heart wide open.

went for a walk where i grew up slow
looking for a face i used to know
i walked for hours and didn't see a soul
everyone had left, so i heard

i'm tired of other people's bathrooms
other people's beds
some of is fled, some of us stayed.
we got a little bruised, a little older, a little broken.

i threw myself out into the world
and it threw me back at you
i threw myself out into the world
and it threw me back at you

all my friends are someplace else
i'm stuck out here by myself
leave our porchlight on and
your heart wide open.

goodness gracious:

four perfectly amazing shows - either sold out or near capacity, all hushed. everyone welcoming new music. pascale, mathieu and karl were awesome to share the road with, all presenters - holmes hooke, kevin priddle, andrew fleming, tanya springer - who poured themselves into making the shows amazing. seeing friends i haven't seen in ages. it feels like because i'm always in and out of places that i don't get to connect - like being at a table of amazing food - conversations to explore - but not being allowed to partake.

come to shows this weekend:

thurs oct 18 - waterloo, on - bombshelter pub - (519) 888-4042 - w/ paul mathew + s/g mike evin
fri oct 19 - peterborough, on - showplace performance centre - (705) 742-SHOW (7469)
sat oct 20 - london, on - london music club - (519)640-6996 + s/g mike evin
sun oct 21 - windsor, on - phog lounge - (519) 253-1605 + special guest christian massoti

please please please purchase tickets in advance - you save up to $5 in most cases and it helps us predict turnouts (important for when i'd like to bring out other musicians to perform!). our goal is to keep ticket prices as reasonable as possible ($5-$10)

order the new album here:

ranked 3rd best selling album at maplemusic.com after cowboy junkies and loreena mckennitt!

Mike DiRisio

10/10/07

Craig Cardiff is back, bringing his acoustic folk melodies across Canada. Touring all the way from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, he does not plan on leaving any Canadian in the dark.

With the release of his newest album Goodnight (Go Home), he now has even more music to share with the nation. Remarkably his 11th release, this album is one that has been brewing for quite some time.

His newest release was produced by Les Cooper and showcases talent from Paul Mathew, along with many other musicians. These are two people whom Cardiff has found he has a great relationship with when it comes to writing and recording.

"I've worked with Les on my last several albums, and Paul and I started playing together back in highschool," said Cardiff. "It's the same relationship editors and novelists have - having producers who can push the song into a stronger place is always handy."

Although the themes underlying his songs are varied, he has a tendency to focus on the many different sides of the human condition. His writing style tends to begin somewhat messy, which is something that he feels makes his music sound far more human and real.

"Some of my songs deal with loss - people leaving from illness, and I've just written the song as it needed to be," said Cardiff. "Afterwards, I'll worry that it's a bit raw or overexposed."

This unusual style appears to be well received by fans, since it has helped them to connect to his music. Cardiff has found solace in this connection, and appreciates how fans see themselves in his music.

"I've always been surprised at how people are at shows, saying 'that's what it was like for me'. It's confirmation that the song needed to be put out there," said Cardiff.

The fans are always in the back of Cardiff's mind, and he wants to remove the distance that a stage can create. Although he views himself as a performer, he wants to do much more than just put on a good show. He strives to communicate with the listener on a deeper level.

"Music is meant to be a conversation between people and so its crucial as an artist to get out there, to listen and talk, learn from the conversations, and take the conversations to new places," he said.

As a veteran musician, Cardiff knows the ins and outs of putting on a good show.

"I believe that all live shows are about weddings and fistfights - it's all a matter of degree, presentation and intensity," said Cardiff.

This philosophy has proven itself effective over the many years he has been on the road, and this road has taken him much farther than most folk/acoustic artists out there.

Touring extensively over the years, he has travelled down many of the back-roads that weave through Canada and the United States. He has learned a great deal about the local scenes of these cities and towns, and feels that Canada has great potential when it comes to music.

"The biggest difference I've come across is how the U.S. has so many older, established cities, steeped in the culture and appreciation of music," said Cardiff. "As Canadians, I feel like we're still growing those audience bases and listening rooms."

Whether it's with the intensity of a back alley brawl, or the elegance of a beautiful wedding, Cardiff wants the audience to experience something truly unique.

Craig Cardiff plays Isaac's on Oct. 13.
