Vermont-based quartet RAQ describes the band's fusion of sound as high performance rock 'n' roll. But what exactly does that mean?

"Let's say Eddie Van Halen and Bruce Hornsby are in the same band, and it's being conducted by Frank Zappa,"said Chris Michetti, RAQ's guitarist. The analogy fits, considering it touches on the psychedelia, improvisation, straight rocking and all-around craziness of the band's sound. RAQ's music is bouncy, energetic-yet-laid-back and constantly danceable.

Relentless touring has earned RAQ a dedicated following of fans and regular appearances in the summer festival circuit. With six years and three studio albums under its belt, RAQ has created quite a buzz as an up-and-coming jam band. But as any fan of improvisational music knows, jam bands are best experienced live.

Michetti said the band is currently prepping for the digital release of their first live album, which was recorded in March at Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh. Although hundreds of the band's live shows are available for free downloading, this is the first official live album.

"It's really kick ass," Michetti said. A friend of the band thought that performance was particularly exceptional, and upon listening to the show, the band sent their recording off to get mixed and mastered for release. Now RAQ fans and curious listeners will be able to get their hands on a high-quality recording that accurately represents the live RAQ experience.

RAQ uses improvisation as a vehicle to enhance well-written, structurally strong songs. Drummer Greg Stukey holds it down with uppity beats and loud crashes while bassist Jay Burwick keeps the low end bouncing. Keyboardist Todd Stoops, who Michetti described as a "f---ing maniac," musically speaking, adds a hyper-funky layer of texture to the music. Michetti - taking after heroes Angus Young of AC/DC and Van Halen - mixes rocking riffs with lightning-fast guitar solos.

"RAQ is into correctly jamming," Michetti said, "doing it in a way that goes somewhere and makes a little bit more sense." Although RAQ puts a great deal of thought into set lists to make shows flow well, Michetti thinks the greatest moments are unplanned.

"The best things happen when we're just feeling it and we all kind of stumble across a jam," he said.

RAQ has been an improvisational band since its earliest days, when the band was playing clubs in their hometown of Burlington, Vt. Coming together in 2001, RAQ got its start performing locally, playing highly improvised cover songs.

"We would go up there with like four songs and just jam," Michetti said. Because each member of RAQ had been in other bands, he said, they each had their own catalog of original songs, which made their way into RAQ's repertoire with originals the band had started writing together.

"It was cool because there was no real pressure," Michetti said. "We just kind of did it for fun." The band released their first album, Shed Tech, in March 2001, and was featured as a New Groove of the Month on jambands.com in May 2002, after which they spent their summer bringing their energetic live shows to numerous music festivals, including Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Langerado and moe.down. The band's second album, Carbohydrates, was released that Halloween.

Their 2006 release, Ton These, which was recorded at former Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio's studio, was met with much praise from fans and critics who were attracted to the album's focus on tightly crafted songs.

RAQ even have their own festival, the Lew Au, which has taken place in Newport, Vt., the past two summers.

"The hardcore of the hardcore RAQs come," Michetti said. "People come from everywhere. It turns into the ultimate psychedelic freak-out."

It isn't hard to have fun at a RAQ show. While they may not be breaking any new ground sonically, the Vermont quartet plays a mix of quirky originals and killer covers that keeps the crowd both entertained and dancing. The energy that the crowd gave the band and vice versa at Highline Ballroom a few weeks ago was pretty cool to watch. Everyone in the venue (besides me) seemed like longtime RAQ fans, and they consequently hung on every note the band played.

Keyboardist Todd Stoops is a guy most people either think is the best thing since sliced bread or the most annoying musician they've ever heard. Personally, I think Stoops' spastic style adds some originality to both the jams and songs themselves. Check out Shirley Be A Drooler for a taste of Stoops' hyper organ-playing or Clamslide for a sample of what he can do on the piano. Guitarist Chris Michetti shredded his way through the evening, starting with rapid-fire runs during the cover of AC/DC's It's A Long Way to The Top that opened the show before exhibiting a more melodic side of his fretwork on Carbohydrates Are The Enemy > Freya > Carbohydrates Are The Enemy.

My favorite part of the RAQ show came towards the end of the 90-minute-plus first set when they dropped Otis Spode. Otis Spode is one of RAQ's newest tunes, and it could be the best composition they've written in years. You gotta love a song that sounds like it was written by Nikki Sixx and Frank Zappa with a hint of Rush thrown in. Other highlights included a fun cover of Van Halen's Jump, the jam out of Helter Skelter and the Will Run closer that contained elements of the Dead's Scarlet > Fire transition.

It's been a few weeks since this gig, and some of the songs RAQ played are still stuck in my head. The choruses of Silhouette and Gabvonie continue to play on repeat in my mind. These guys sure to know how to write catchy tunes, even the instrumentals like Carbs stick with you after the show. RAQ brings the Donkey Show to Texas this weekend, where they will play two gigs at Austin's Club 115. (Scotty B)

Greetings RAQ Family,

Thanks to all of you for your support and we hope that you are having as good a time so far this fall as we are! If you have not had a chance to join us yet this tour, we hope to see you in the next few weeks!

MAGIC HAT has joined RAQ for this tour as our sponsor, and we will be running around the country with their beer and some great merch. The shows in Asheville and Charlotte will be promoted by the company in the local market, and we are excited to start this partnership with them for this tour, and in the future. Stay tuned for more news on this as we have it!

ECHO PROJECT.....we are in! RAQ will be joining Phil Lesh & Friends, The Killers, The Roots and many many more at this incredible festival. We will be playing in Ft. Collins, Colorado on Saturday, and then Sunday outside of Atlanta at the Echo Project. We definitely hope to see many familiar faces at this great event! More info and times to be announced in the coming days!

We also have a few additions to our tour this fall. First, Bellingham, WA at the Nightlight Lounge on September 30th. Should be a rager.. doors are at 8PM, and the show is at 9PM. We have also added the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on Nov. 2nd to our Halloween run. The Lincoln's recent renovations include a great balcony now, and we are really excited to add this legendary venue to this Southern run. It's going to be one heck of a week in RAQ world!

NEW MERCH online - we have just created a new online store with the help of Home Grown Music - Check out the new t-shirts and hats here, and keep an eye out for tons of new products, posters, and other items this fall! ! Thanks to Taboot for the great posters, Tripp and his crew are working hard to get us some new collector prints for the fall tour...keep an eye out on the merch table, because these are sure to go fast.

RAQ is also really excited to have some great openers this tour including DJ Logic in Asheville for Halloween, Kinetix in Boulder, Moon Boot Lover with Peter Prince in Baltimore, Kanvus in San Francisco, and more to be announced.

RAQ Tapers have taken it up a notch this tour and we couldn't be more honored and appreciative of their hard work and dedication to spreading the music. The turn-around time has been amazing and a "Recent Additions" list to the Live Music Archive is now on the Myspace page. Check out the RAQ Recordings section on our community site, Hyperfunk, if you would like to meet other RAQ tapers or to learn more about downloading from the Live Music Archive.

Thanks to the folks at Bands That Jam for coming to the show at Club Infinity and sharing photos, video, and kind words:

"Last night was awesome. Another great night for music in Buffalo, NY. We went and saw RAQ perform at Club Infinity and were treated to two killer sets. It's amazing how much better live music is as compared to just listening to over the radio or downloading a few songs. I was blown away at their ability to include heavy guitar riffs with improvisational jams."

Take care everyone!

a message from dave

Well we're less than 5 weeks away and I hope you guys are ready. I wanted to thank you all in advance for everything you guys do to support both RAQ and S.V.P. Many of you have reached out and offered help personally to me and I want to especially thank you for that. When somehow days can feel both unimaginably long and just too short at the same time, it helps to know you have people on your side. I have already excepted some of your offers and plan to get in touch with some of you still. But the one thing I am going to ask all of you is to remember what Lew-Au is about. Lew-Au is about all of us. Its about all of us taking the opportunity that RAQ has given us to come together and rage. An opportunity to celebrate the music we love, on our terms. It took two years for this opportunity to return. I suggest we all take advantage of it. But that also means doing it in a safe and respectful way. We're all in this together. Let's make sure we remember it when its all over.

I am also going to ask those of you who can afford it and have the time, to please buy your tickets early. There are multiple elements involved with a festival that have to be changed, altered or that evolve based upon attendance. The sooner and earlier we have a handle on that the easier and more effectively we'll be able to act and react.

I remember after the first Lew-AU thinking about the evolution of RAQ and how ,in my opinion, it's fan base had really grown into a community. The growth was not only obvious but extremely gratifying. Please bring your friends, bring your family, bring everyone you know. They'll thank you for it. We're going big.

We all know RAQ is going to bring it. They'll bring the energy, a million notes and shit you don't even know about. I'll take care of all the paperwork. So, it's up to you to come and match that energy. Its up to you to take advantage of the opportunity. Lew-Au will only be as epic as YOU make it. Our Music. Our Terms.

Let's F***ing GO.

Be safe
dl

BANDS

Five Sets of RAQ

Did that say five? Oh yeah, kids! Five sets of blazing, melt your face, leave your head spinning RAQ n' Roll! But that's not all...Tim Reynolds has been added to the line-up, along with Burlington's own Casual Fiasco and Bad Suit. These additions are rounding out an already sweet schedule of Strangefolk, Al & The Transamericans, The Brew, and The Jaik Miller Band. We want you all to be as amped about our line-up as we are, so here is more info about each of them, along with some links to download and listen to their shows and music before you join us in July!

Tim Reynolds

The name Tim Reynolds is often inexorably linked with the Dave Matthews Band. While Tim has certainly jammed many times with the band and has played with Dave in a variety of ways, don't let this association fool you into thinking that Tim Reynolds is anything but his own man. He is a guitarist who rises above the mere mastery of chops to a virtual state of communion with his instrument. Tim makes use of every capacity the guitar possesses and has brought a whole new sensibility to his instrument with his wide-ranging musical ability. From progressive rock, straight-up jazz and high-powered funk fusion guitar, to bass, piano, sitar, mandolin, violin, and a plethora of ethnic percussion instruments, when Tim Reynolds performs it is a symphony of the senses.

Tim Reynolds Live at Wilde Auditorium 4.27.07

Tim Reynolds Live at The Double Door 9.14.06

Tim Reynolds Live at Hilton Garden Inn 2.16.07

Strangefolk

At the heart of Strangefolk's songwriting is a seamless blend of narrative lyrical content and inventive melody. Rock, folk, blues, and bluegrass influences converge to create an instantly recognizable sound, which keeps Strangefolk's listeners moving from start to finish. When punctuated with Strangefolk's trademark three-part harmonies and soaring lead guitars, the band's unique songwriting ability develops a natural avenue for the band to extend themselves in a live setting. The result is one of the more gratifying live music experiences around.

Strangefolk is Jon Trafton (Guitar, Vocals) Luke Patchen Montgomery (Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Vocals)
Erik Glockler (Bass) Russ Lawton (Drums) Don Scott (Keyboards)

Strangefolk Live at Sunday River 12.2.06

Strangefolk Live at Gathering of The Vibes 8.18.06

Strangefolk Live at Big Easy 10.21.05

Al & The Transamericans

Al & The Transamericans are a roots rock, alt country, Americana group hailing from the great Northeast. The music is a nice blend of bluegrass, country, & rock. All of the musicians have 'day jobs' in other bands (moe.,Strangefolk, Okemah, the Gordon Stone trio). These guys all come to this simply for the love of playing a good 3 chord song. Their shows typically feature everything from straight up acoustic bluegrass barnburners to balls out rock.

Al & The Transamericans are Al Schnier (vocals, gtr, mando) Vinnie Amico (drums)
Kirk Juhas (b3, rhodes, piano, vocals) Eric Glockler (bass, vocals) Gordon Stone (banjo, pedal steel)

Al & The Transamericans Live at SummerCamp 5.26.07

Al & The Transamericans Live at Club Cafe 3.26.04

Al & The Transamericans Live at Higher Ground Music Festival 6.26.03

The Brew

The Brew is an energetic quartet hailing from Massachusetts' North Shore. When the four musicians joined together in 2002, they clicked instantly and it was obvious from the start that they possessed that indefinable "IT" that is rare and often overlooked, but sensed in the music, and always searched for by fans.

The Brew is Dave Drouin (guitars/vocals) Kelly Kane (drums)
Chris Plante (keyboards/vocals) Joe Plante (bass/vocals)

Blending elements of roots-rock, groove, backbeat and Americana, The Casual Fiasco have been turning heads down the east coast with their shirt-soaking live shows and unique songwriting. "The Casual Fiasco's upbeat, ska-infused rock is designed to put a smile on your face. Combining the open-ended vibe of groove music with the solid hooks of pop, the Burlington-based band bridges the gap between Sublime and Paul Simon. Throw in a little exploratory jamming and you've got a recipe for laid-back good times." --Seven Days

Bad Suit

The firestorm of invention that was jazz-rock fusion music of the Seventies resonates today in the music of Burlington Vermont's innovative trio Badsuit. This trio sounds a resounding charge for the genre in an already vibrant music scene, slowly but surely making a place for themselves and promising to widen their prominence—not to mention their audience-- the longer they play. Badsuit reach for those musical heights that illustrate, in no uncertain term, how great is the art of music and how inclusive that experience can be.

The Jaik Miller Band

The Jaik Miller Band is a visionary rock band from New York City. Since their first performance at a THG Presents party at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in 2005, they have been playing shows from coast to coast. At the heart of the band is Jaik Miller (guitar/vocals) and Marco Ferraro (bass) who have been riding this journey with many friends and changes along the way.

Hello to All!!

Summer is finally here and the fun has started! Mountain Jam kicked things off this past weekend and what a great time it was! Radio Woodstock and Warren Haynes presented an incredible weekend of music in a beautiful setting. Those lucky enough to make it to RAQ's early set on Friday nite were treated to an impressive show including a new instrumental tune entitled "Premium" and a sweet "Maybe I'm Amazed" cover. Mountain Jam had a live webcast feed all weekend and you can check out anddownload RAQ's set. (note~RAQ starts a minute or two into the video)

Late nite in the lodge, RAQ threw down another monster set. The room was hot and RAQ was blistering which left many in the packed and sticky crowd picking their jaws up off the floor early Saturday morning. Tight, locked, and dialed throughout the entire show, the guys were on fire. With Chuck and T-Bird back together at the helm, die-hards and innocents had a true "RAQxperience".

Read more about last weekend on the Mountain Jam Blog, where you will find some great shots of RAQ!

Next up on the schedule is Wakarusa!, Join RAQ along with Ben Harper, Widespread Panic, MMW, Les Claypool and many, many more June 7th-10th in Lawrence, Kansas. Honest Tunes Radio Show has a Wakarusa Festival preview show, including tracks from RAQ to get excited for this weekend! Hope to see lots of you there!

We have more news about Lew-Au II!!!!!

Slanted View Productions and RAQ are excited to announce Lew-Au II, a two-day camping and music event in Newport, VT on July 21 and July 22. RAQ, the energetic quartet from Burlington, VT, will deliver at least five sets of its high performance music throughout the weekend and headline the event for the second time. Other acts that have signed on include Strangefolk, Al & The Transamericans, Jaik Miller Band and The Brew. More bands TBA.

The first Lew-Au took place in New Woodstock, NY where over 600 fans flocked to experience multiple sets from RAQ, Jazz Mandolin Project, and DJ Logic. This year the festival will make its debut in RAQ's home state of Vermont where they hope to find a home for the event and make it an easy drive from anywhere in the northeast region. Guitarist, Chris Michetti, says, "It was important for us to have this in Vermont. We feel as though we represent it. We owe a lot to this state. This band grew up here together. We were conceived here. This is the most important gig of the year for us, possibly in our career and having it in Vermont just feels right."

We couldn't be more amped about the "Return of the Lew-Au" and are positive it is going to be the blockbuster hit of the summer! Handing out Lew-Au flyers to the music drenched kids leaving RAQ's late nite set on Friday, the most common response was "we'll be there!". Seriously, as you all know, any event put on by Dave is going to rage, so make your plans now to join us for what promises to be epic!

Other news for the summer are two more additions to RAQ's festival journeys. August 16th to 19th, get lit at the Bonfire Festival in Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. Then, August 24th-26th RAQ will headline Phanphest 3.0 at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY.

We want to say thanks to our friend Andy at Phish & Chips for his continued support of RAQ and for spreading the music!

Plus much appreciation to our friends at Hidden Track for their great story and interview with the band from the Bowery show!

Jam Cruise, Relix HeadCount are sponsoring "Vote to the Boat," a contest to select the fan pick on Jam Cruise 6 via text message. Send a text message to "56658" and enter "RX RAQ" to vote RAQ onto JamCruise 6! You can only vote once so be sure to tell your friends. Everyone who votes is entered to win a trip on Jamcruise 6! As an
additional bonus, Relix is giving everyone who votes a free lifetime digital subscription. The contest will run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Take care everyone!

A Soundboard Matrix of the Bowery Ballroom show from this April is now available to download on archive.org. Thanks to Ed, Chuck & Ned for their efforts in this!

Lots of fun had by all who joined RAQ this weekend for two nights at the Mayflowers Festival! Only eleven days until Mountain Jam! The line-up for this festival got even more fun, when Phil and friends were added to the already great schedule. Two nights of Goverment Mule, New Orleans Social Club, Assembly of Dust, Tea Leaf Green, Ozomatli, Umphrey's McGee, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Robert Randolph, U-Melt, G-Love and more. RAQ will be playing on Friday at 6:30pm and then later that night will be the "Late Night in the Lodge" band. In order to attend Friday and Late Night events, you must purchase a three day pass. This is going to be an awesome weekend at the beautiful Hunter Mountain, so we hope to see you all in the Lodge!

Thanks to everyone for your love & support!

It just keeps getting better! Good times had by all who rode in to catch RAQ in Philadelphia and Virginia this weekend. The North by Northwest show was especially top shelf and a great example of where the band is at this moment: crisp, engaged, connected, experimental and surrounded by a growing, close knit community.

Follow the fun to Fontana's in NYC on Thursday night, where Chris Michetti & Todd Stoops will be joining DJ Logic and Paul Frazier (David Byrne band) for a special jam session brought to you by THG Presents. The party will get started at 9pm with The Jaik Miller Band. Tickets are $15 at the door. 21+

Check out this week's Cold Turkey Podcast brought to you by Relix Magazine. Featured are performances from last month's three city Green Apple Music Festival. RAQ represents the New York portion of the podcast with "Walking in Circles->Technoavailable->Walking in Circles" tracks from the Bowery Ballroom on 4.21.07. Thanks to Mike & Benjy at Cold Turkey, along with Relix and Peter Shapiro for presenting this great festival! Looking forward to next year already...

For all those who could not make it (and those who want to re-live an amazing night!), Phil Emma wrote an enthusiastic review of the Bowery show on Grateful Web.

RAQ Shines at the Green Apple Music Festival
Published on 5/5/2007

"Conformity is nice but it will never tell you twice to live for fun!!!" - Stoops

The carnival came to the ultra sold out Bowery Ballroom in New York City for the largest Earth Day celebration. There were fire swallowers, people dressed in costume, and even popular musicians such as Page McConnell lurking through the crowd. All here to see the rapidly rising jam saviors from Burlington take the stage in one of their most important gigs to date. It seems just like yesterday when another band from Burlington saved music after the Grateful Dead bowed out. RAQ has been flying strong under the radar for some time now, and it was nice to see about 700 people pack the venue, all in support of this high performance rock n' roll band.

The opening quote is a line from the first song of the night "Tumbling Down," off of RAQ's newest album Ton These. Tickling those ivories, Todd Stoops started the show off with a high energy song followed by a super fast version of a classic, "Brother From Another Mother." Chris Michetti destroyed the Trey Anastasio style solo that bent his strings to their limits. "15 Shakes," "The Ventriliquist," and "Reason," kept the dance floor surprised and on their toes. After "Forget Me Not," special guest and former manager Dave Lew came out to give the crowd the official announcement of next RAQ festival called the Lew-au II. RAQ fans went wild as the band played an incredible "Late Night," into a powerful "Weakling." This was just one of the many high points of the show for me. The first set closed with "Quick and Painless," and the crowd erupted with sweat and tired feet.

They opened the second set with a not so surprising "Walking in Circles," but went into an extra rare "Technoavailable," which sent the Hyperfunkers, a term used to describe Raq's dedicated, into a jaw dropping whirlwind. After they went back into "Walking in Circles," the rest of the crowd caught up with the magic that was swirling through the room. Then, they let the crowd think and talk about it a little while they played the mellow "Circumstance" off of Carbohydrates. "Bag It Out" got the crowd going again so much that an African-American fire eating Gene Simmons came onto the stage to do some tricks. While the flames were engulfing his mouth, Michetti signaled to the band to go into the Kiss classic "Shout It Out Loud." After finishing "Bag It Out" and "Back to the Head," a pair of panties sailed on stage as smooth talking bass player Jay Burwick teased the women with "Sweet Cream Butter." The girl who threw them was so moved by the lyrics that she climbed on stage to dance until she taken off a few minutes later.

When I asked my good friend and big RAQ fan Mike "Tiny" Wilson, who flew in from Colorado just for the show, what his favorite part of the night was he said, "The energy was high throughout the night, but the "Botz" (outro) > "Time Bomb" closer was the best." It was truly electric when the smiley Stoops rocked and gave the crowd one last reason to remember this night. The encore was a "Late Night" reprise, and the crowd seemed resistant to leave. It was one of those nights that you just don't want to end.

RAQ is growing in popularity by the day and for good reason. I'll be seeing them again tonight in Philadelphia, and I'm starting to sense another great jam band from Vermont to tour with could be in my cards for the future.

Thanks for the kind words Phil!

Also appreciation to Lydia Cox for her review on jambands.com of the Bellingham, Washington show from March!!

April 25, 2007 - Wednesday
RAQ fans were treated this weekend to stellar shows, with a special sit-in and a surprise announcement that left all feeling stoked for this summer!

Friday's festivities at the Higher Ground Ballroom in Burlington included a power setlist and a guest appearance:

"Mike Gordon Returns for RAQ"

Mike Gordon emerged from semi-hibernation Friday night to help RAQ celebrate 4/20 at South Burlington, VT's Higher Ground. The former Phish bassist emerged at the start of RAQ's second set for "I'm Bad I'm Nationwide" and the Allman Brothers Band's "Whipping Post." During his 92nd St. Y appearance Trey Anastasio mentioned that Gordon was taking a year off from touring, which likely accounts for his limited appearances in recent months. Gordon wasn't the only Phish-associate on the bill that night: former Phish engineer and current Page McConnell band bassist Rob O'Dea opened the evening with Deep Soda. On Saturday Jon Fishman and Touchpants supported RAQ at New York's Bowery Ballroom as part of Green Apple. RAQ will perform May 4 at Church, VA's The State Theatre.
(from jambands.com)

RAQ raged the Bowery on Saturday! Tons of appreciation to all who came out for another sell-out, crazy, fun night here. The energy was through the roof and the band tore it up. Thanks to the folks at Hidden Track for the great show review!
