Quarter Mile Combo's new album "Motels, Gas & Beer" is now available for purchase at CD Baby and iTunes....
Here are a few recent reviews.....
Raucous Records (....UK....) A superb debut album from The Quarter Mile Combo. This 4-piece from ....California.... is led by excellent vocalist Nettie Hammer - she really does have one of the best voices in Rockabilly. The sound is Modern Rockabilly, with clear up-to-date recording which goes against the current trend of bands trying to recreate the 50s sound. The rhythms though are purely rockin', and the songs are all Quarter Mile Combo originals. All-in-all, this is a strong, solid first album from an original band who put their own stamp onto the Rockabilly sound. Recommended. Rockabilly HQ What we have here are 12 self-penned tracks of sheer joy. There is not a single down point to the whole album. As a reviewer of many, many CDs I am here to tell you that that is as rare as an honest politician. Justin Barr, Todd Jenkins and Gary Daly have managed to craft some awesome, modern Rockabilly songs which not only harken back to the golden age of Rock ‘n’ Roll, but also manage to sound fresh and modern. Of course they are lucky enough to have one of, in my opinion, the best female voices anywhere in the Rockabilly world in Nettie Hammar. Her voice sounds like it’s been sculpted by Michael-Angelo then dipped in chocolate. Blue Suede News Here's a hot rockin' quartet from ....California.... fronted by a powerful singer - Nettie Hammar. The Quarter Mile Combo has delivered their brand of Rockabilly to our corner of the North West a few times and always hits the right nerve with the Rockabilly crowd. Justin Barr's very tasty guitar licks, the steady rhythm of Todd Jenkins on slap bass and Gary Daly's drumming set the perfect stage for Nettie's commanding vocal delivery.....

Posted by Al E. Cat on 20th August 2009 in cd reviewI can still faintly recall what is was like to be a kid and be waiting all year for 3 major events to take place: My Birthday, Christmas and Halloween These were the major events in the kid calendar, mainly because they involved the receipt of either gifts or candy. This week, Christmas, Halloween and my Birthday all came in the same week when I visited my PO Box to find something I have been anticipating since late January this year when I was fortunate enough to be involved in a benefit gig in San Francisco. It was overall an amazing evening, featuring some great (and a coupe of not-so-great) bands, but everyone was giving their time and talents free of charge and for a very worth-while cause, which made it all the more admirable what those guys were doing up on stage. About halfway through the evening a four-piece band took to the stage featuring, what has to be said, was the most attractive singer of the proceedings. As luck would have it, she could sing too! And how!!! Suddenly, people put down their beers and paused their conversations and actually started listening to what was going on on stage. The reason was quite plain; these guys ROCKED! From about 2 bars into their first song, I was hooked and was asking everyone about them. Did they have a CD out? Do they have a website? Where are they playing next? I got the answers I wanted, except to my first question to which I got the old “It’s in the pipeline.” It’s been a long 7 months for me, but I can tell you it was worth every second of the wait. Motels, Gas and Beer ranks in my top two CDs out this year (The other, in case you’re interested is Kim Lenz’s Its All True, but then I may be a little biased there) What we have here are 12 self-penned tracks of sheer joy. So, in short, to go back to my Kid Calendar analogy, it’s like waiting all year for Christmas, then finding a new bike, a GI Joe, the Constructor set and a Go-Kart under the tree. In case you missed it…I really liked this CD.

1/4-MILE COMBO: The Combo hit the Fourth Street Tavern on January 26 and set soggy San Rafael on fire, knocking out two big sets of rockabilly favorites. St. Peterbilt opened the show with a wide selection of songs about truckers, truckstops, and the agony and ecstasy of life on eighteen wheels, doing a better job of holding my interest than I'd have expected them to. It didn't hurt that their guitarist is Justin Barr, the same Justin Barr who hopped right back onstage to take his usual place with the Combo. He played 40 or 45 songs that night, and when I told him he must be an Iron Man to play that long, he just laughed, "That's nothin'!"
The rain kept a lot of San Rafael's bar-hopping hee-haws from stumbling in and spoiling the fun, so the true rockabilly fans had the run of the place and more room to dance. After the band's previous show, I'd written a review, sighing wistfully about how much I'd love to hear them play a cover of Wanda Jackson's "Funnel of Love," and wouldn't you know it, here they were, playing it for me tonight. Vocalist Tyler Terrell did a hell of a good job curling that purring voice of hers around the lyrics, and this was definitely a highlight of the show for me.
I caught the Combo again on February 17 at DeMarco's Club 23 in Brisbane, along with two other bands, and they sounded even better. In fact, better than I've ever heard them. Maybe it was the acoustics, or maybe they were feeling competitive, but man, they were golden. The set was stripped down to less than an hour, but that was time enough for lots of their standards: "You're My Baby," "Tear It Up," "Big River," "Riot in Cell Block Number 9," and more, right after the other. Tyler, you look great with your hair up like that. And please reconsider the whole leaving-the-band thing.

The Knockout, San Francisco, 1/13/07
Other than the Pendletons, 1/4 Mile Combo was the last major local rockabilly band I hadn't seen yet. There was always another show happening whenever they were playing, something good enough or close enough to tempt me away. I'm kicking myself for that now, because 1/4 Mile Combo is a hell of a good rockabilly band.
Tyler Terrell is the vocalist, leading the Combo through a course of classics with a purring but powerful voice. Her sound reminds me of Josie Kreuzer's, but without the syrupy thick Southern drawl. The singing is very natural and she's got a great stage presence. The band is very good too, and the drumming really impressed me. The music's got a lot of kick to it, generally more so than the originals have.
1/4 Mile Combo must have a direct hook-up to the part of my brain that stores all my favorite rockabilly tunes, because the band played them, one right after another. "Black Cadillac," "Big River," "Straight A's in Love," on and on, all of them well done, and all of them devoured by an audience gone wild; I've never seen so many people so into a band at this club.
The only sad part of all this is that Tyler is stepping down this spring, so she can devote more time to other areas of her life. Hopefully, the band will carry on with a new singer, but she'll be tough to replace.
If the band takes requests... man, I'd love to hear her do Wanda Jackson's "Funnel of Love" before she hangs up that microphone.
