spend 7 hours today doing what he thought he could not do: teach private, bass, voice, piano, guitar theory, rock band, composition and arranging. Of course everyone will get a heaping spoonful of the Bubba Hernandez philosophical approach of it all which some of my colleagues call Bubbasizing. Let me know if you or someone you love would like to be next at finding they're own true musical inner voice.

Had a blast last night with Los Super Vatos at Casbeer's in San Antonio. Bobby, Kevin with special guests Ricky Hernandez and Jorge Alejandro tore it up! The icing on the cake was when Max Baca along with Los Lobos' David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas and Conrad Lozano came out to check out the show and hang after their corporate gig. It was a total gas!

BUBBA HERNANDEZ

9:30 p.m., Juanita's. $7.

An integral member of Brave Combo for two decades, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Bubba Hernandez brings his Los Super Vatos (“The Super Dudes”) crew to town for what's certain to be a kaleidoscope of fused sounds on Saturday. Twice awarded (with Brave Combo) and once thus far nominated as a solo artist for Grammys, Hernandez has meshed his Latin roots with rock guitars, funky drumming and pumping bass on his latest release, “Dancing En Fuego.” Worthy of mention is that Hernandez will be joined on congas by former Combo alum and Little Rock native Joe Cripps, who recorded tracks for Hernandez' second post-Combo record. With two decades of international touring, compositions on radio, TV and film under his belt, Hernandez should intrigue the curious and satisfy the familiar with this 18-and-up performance. PP.

The last band was Bubba Hernandez and the Super Vatos also from Austin. I had seen Bubba's name in the Austin Chronicle
under club listings but didn't pay too much attention. So when I found
out that they were also playing, I go excited because I was curious as
to what they sounded like. At the club I saw this older guy, about my
age, with long hair and derby hat walking around. I thought to myself,
" I've seen this guy before at other shows and venues" and to my
surprise that was Bubba. The Super Vatos were super. They played with a
heavy base and percussion rhythm and beat. They describe their music as
"Fiery Bilingual Cumbia-based Pop Rock Songs of Intrigue, Naughtiness,
Heartbreak and Other Steamy Delights." Wow! Now I'll tell you who
Wow-ed me that night and that was the conga/bongo player, Clemencia
Zapata. If you get a chance to see Bubba Hernandez and the Super Vatos,
go see them because you'll have a good time and feel like you're at a
party. I did purchase their new CD "Dancing En Fuego" and my favorite
songs are Hero and My Big Charanga.

Dancing En Fuego

Moon Zero Bird Records

Bubba Hernandez GOT SIX Grammy Nominations as the bass player for Brave Combo, and his seventh for his 2007 solo debut, Polka Freak Out,so we know he can play.

His new Dancing En Fuego is a high-energy, joyful-sounding blend of cumbia-based funk-pop-rockin Spanish and English. We get bass, guitar, horns, keyboards, percussion, and more with some humor, lots of late-night encounters and would-be romance and sexual innuendo and tension,

and simple rhymes with a variety of sometimes intricate carved, cool rhythms.

The opening “My Big Charanga” urges listeners to

“jump right off the frying pan and on my big charanga.”

The reference is to club and dance bands popular in the 1940s that mixed Spanish and African music and instruments; today, it often refers to the blending of traditional styles that influenced salsa.

The 14 mostly original dance songs mostly deal with desire, insecurity, and bravado. The premise is a love cycle from top to bottom and back again.

Hernandez produced it himself in Los Angeles, San Antonio, and Dallas with a cornucopia of musicians to create the big, satisfying sound.
