GRAMMY SHOW 2008 is history now. We did not win the trophy but 4th Nomination is an honour and we got a lot of complimentary media coverage for it. We had a great time in Los Angeles. We partied with many other Nominees especially with the guys and gals from our category. Alex Meixner, Bubba Hernandez, Ann Marie, Jeff Barnes, Walter Ostanek, Brian Sklar and their entourages. Our schedule was like this: On Wednesday Feb. 6th we went to the ELLEN SHOW, on Thursday we had a beautiful reception for all the Canadian Grammy Nominees at the Canadian Consulate - very classy event - Jennifer Lynn Communications did a fantastic job arranging all of it. Thanks. On Thursday night we went to a local bar to see Alex and Bubba perform. Friday was sightseeing day and we even took the LA Metro to Hollywood for a dinner and stroll on Hollywood Blvd. Saturday was the pre Grammy party and life time achievements awards at the Wilshire Ebel Theatre. Sunday, 8 AM mass at the Cathedral (very large, modern & impressive building), Afternoon was the pretelecast awards and then Sunday evening the Grammy show and then post Grammy party. Busy busy 5 days. Our hotel Westin Bonaventure was very elegant. Great memories. Thank you Lord. BTW - Congrat's to Jimmy Sturr for winning his 17th Grammy.

We will be recording a new CD this year, it'll be called "MY POLISH ROOTS", it will be all in Polish but I won't be submitting it to NARAS in the polka category.

Band Polkas its Way Back to Grammys
By Kathryn Dunmore, Backbeat

Canadian Polka artists John Gora and the Gorale have earned their fourth nomination for the Grammy Awards. They're up for Best Polka Album for their recording entitled Bulletproof Polkas.

John Gora and Gorale, also known as The Music Factory, have been performing for more than 25 years throughout southern Ontario and the United States at various festivals, dances and special events. Consisting of clarinet, trumpet, drums, bass, guitar, violin, sax and vocals, the band caters to a range of music from classic rock to dance, but has made its mark with its upbeat polka sound.

"We're a variety band as we can't survive on polka alone," said band leader Gora, a Burlington resident. "But polka is fun music with no generation gap. It's a very social sound. Everybody enjoys it."

Although offering a variety when performing live, the group only records polka music.  Four albums have earned Grammy nominations for the band, including Duty Free Polkas (1997), Follow Me (2000), Pangora's Box (2004) and BulletProof Polka (2007) which was released back in June and nominated last week.

The band's three other recordings are: Ready for Takeoff (1990), Take a Spin (1994) and Can-Am Polkas (2002).

"The album is well done," said Gora. "It has something for everyone, even a Cajun song that is an original. We're not typical 'oompa' polka style music." The band takes classic rock/pop songs, like Boy George's Karma Chameleon and adds its polka twist.

Gora said the Grammy nominations mean peer approval. The group hasn't won yet. "It's recognition by your peers when nominated for a Grammy, as only people in the industry can vote," he said. "It is an honour. We're definitely going down for the award ceremony as it is the 50th anniversary of the Grammys, so it will be a spectacular show. We're very excited and optimistic."
