Greetings friends and ex-lovers.....

Please send me a message with your e-mail address to receive a crazy monthly e-mail about music, tour dates, my projects and general goings on in the sphere of Chase Frank.  Why?  Well, you may even discover new music that no one else would hip you too, in the "What I'm Listening to" section and beyond.  You may here juicy insider information on bands you already know and love, coded as whimsy about the music scene, you'll see.

I started the Rock Report to keep in touch with friends around the country, and those I met on tour--to share music, news, and more music.  I hope you'll write back, when you get the e-mail and tell me what you're listening to, because, like a true music addict, I need new music.....all the time.

Yours,

Chase

I haven't been so good at staying in touch with everyone lately, too busy dealing with life, working on new album and such, so here it goes.

Moved to Austin, what, about 10 months ago?   Seems like yesterday.  Adjusting to a new city, new state, is a challenge.  Firstly, I was raised in the liberal hot bed of Southern California, and for people who think Austin's 'so weird' and 'so liberal', I would have to dissagree. Of course, for the people who come here from other parts of Texas to escape the oppressive smaller towns, I can understand why they'd think it was free and easy.  I still see segregation, hear racial slurs and feel the presence of a good 'ol boy network that goes WAY back.  The music scene, though burgeoning is saturated and extreme.  It's either hipster havens or country licks.  The music scene, as I've discovered, can be good though, and there are good opportunities.   I've played at Emo's, a pretty prominent club, and a hipster place, called, The Beauty Bar, and those were great shows.   The other extreme is the Poodle Dog Lounge, which I played a couple months ago.  I think most people there were related by blood, in an inbred sort of way.  I'm sure that will get me in some trouble but can I say Twin Peaks?  David Lynch should shoot a movie there.

The weather when I got here was beautiful.  Winter is a dream in Austin, mild cold, beautiful rains, and greenery abound, but the summer is brutal.  Especially this summer.  This year, with record breaking months of over 100 temps, it has been somewhat intollerable.  Basically you have to stay inside for your health.

I was lucky to meet a great drummer (Alan Boatright) just a couple months after landing here, and an engineer who's interested in recording (Jamie Estrada) my next album, for which the material is done.  We're in pre-production and it's going pretty good, although, never fast enough for me.

I haven't been able to find a permanent job, like many here, and that's dampered my usual touring and such, but I'm sure it'll come.

I knew I'd miss California, but I didn't know why I'd miss it.  There's an excitement and sense of 'anything's possible' in Cali.  The weather, the food, the never-ending explosion of great underground venues, the great parties, the people.  California is more internatonal, more integrated, more progressive.  That's what I miss.

As with any big move, it takes time to discover the great things about a town, a state, and I am slowly getting to know the great things about Austin.  The trails, the lake, Barton Springs, ACL, SXSW, the independent film and music festivals, but it's hard in this economy to get out and see it all.  Most people I know here are broke.  The wages are lower and the job market is dwindling.   The art scene is what I'd call "sub par", not very unique and the art is very 1980's 1990's.

But, as always, I am happy to have my music (and Alberto!) and hope the new album goes well.  We should have something for you at the beginning of 2010, and that's good.

That's it for now,
Yours
Chase Frank

Sunbelly, of WMUH selected Midnight Manor as a "best new release", along with many others such as Nico Vega, Dan Deacon, Peter Bjorn & John, etc.

In other radio news Chase Frank's Midnight Manor continues to get airplay on college & alternative radio stations such as 88.7 KSPC (Clarmont), WXCU (Columbus, OH), KLCZ (Lewiston, ID), WTCC (Springfield, MA), CILU (Thunder Bay, ONT), WBIM Bridgewater (MA), WRAS (Atlanta, GA--regularly played on Mighty Aphrodite), WXYC (Chapel Hill, NC), WXCU (Columbus, OH), WGBK (GLenview, IL), WAIH (Postdam, NY) and so forth.

Thank you to all the new listeners writing and adding me here on myspace ---and to the callers who apparently called in, which is how songs "chart" in the top 30 which "Some Friend You Are" & "Bipolar Belle" have done.

In other news someone in Turkey made a weird music video of Night Eyes Are Wild (Winter is My Summer 2006) which is comprised of still shots of cats.  for cheap thrills search it on youtube....  I'm sorry, but I don't love cats.....

upwards / onward.

Yours,
Chase Frank

Myself & drummer Alan Boatright are playing Friday April 17 at Emo's, Austin, TX opening for the highly bitchin' "That 1 Guy".  (all ages show/inside)
There is no one man band like "That 1 Guy" who has graced albums with the likes of Tom Waits & many more.  The Onion / Decider Austin recommended the show http://austin.decider.com/events/that-1-guy-and-chase-frank,69385/
And if you've never seen this guy check out this video "The moon is Disgusting"   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wGMsOhaPJs
$8 presale / $10 @ door.
AND...the fantastic Dan Deacon w/Teeth Mountain and Future Islands (outside)
a very very musical night!

It all started with a conversation with Ikey a couple months back....I was asking him to play a pool party I was dreaming up.  Since I moved here only a few months ago (from California) and pretty much knew no one, and had not applied for the actual festival (oops), I figured it was a good time to throw down a good party and not worry about it.  I wanted to see old friends from around the country and do a show with them.  One day-show turned into two day-shows and soon I had a mini festival on my hands.  Yikes!   I knew I had to employ publicist extrordinaire Becky Carr, Yarrr PR.   I was also relieved when Laly said she'd be flying in to help.  I miss Laly so I was stoked!
The weekend before the festival Albert & I went to see White Denim as my SXSW warm up.  They just kick ass live!  If you're not in the know check them out.  Seriously creative trio!  The bassist told me they hadn't played for a few months so he was aching....I knew exactly what he meant since I was about to do my first live show in over, what, 5 months?  (again moved across the country!) Yikes again.  I moved across the country and had to find a new drummer.  I got really lucky when I met Alan Boatright.  He just gets my music.
The few days before the first show was filled with alot of errunds, such as buying alcohol for the bar, helping Metropolis assemble the band apartment, picking up turn tables, etc. etc.  Bringing in every single thing to a pool area is a challenge and it was a great test run for future shows.
Monday night bands started arriving to the band hostel. Tuesday that night I got food poisoning.  Boo...Yuck!  I won't go into the gory details but yuck!  That left me exausted and then I had to set up the pool party, play the pool party and run the pool party Wednesday.  Thank god I was in great company and the "green tea" was flowing.
Wednesday was sort of a test run for Friday.  The bands were all amazing and the sound was great (thanks to Alan Boatright finding me an engineer).  People straggled in but it wasn't huge.  The lure of the sirens took effect and residents came out and also realized they want to come back Friday.  I sold ALOT of merch, which was a real suprised based on numbers there.  Yay!
Thursday I took Laly and her boyfriend Jeremy around Austin.  Starting at the festival downtown we started at the Team Clermont party at Flamingo Cantina.  Good times!  Got to meet Shil Patel (who is doing the national campaign on my album) and see Loney Dear and Wildbirds & Peacedrums.  good performance!

We wandered around making it to a lucky stop where I saw The Fresh and Only's (San Francisco, CA) on the Beerland porch.  Hell yeah!  they were amazing.  I stood right next to King Khan and the Shrines (most of the band) and that was rad.  They loved the Fresh and Only's and who wouldln't!  Check 'em out. they're infectious.  We walked around downtown and saw a ton of poster for Free Moral Agents downtown for our show w/them Friday.  woo hoo.
Then we had to go straight to Ladybird Lake, it was dusk and that's my favorite time of day.  It was a cool break from the heat of the day (i hate sun). I took em to Waterloo Records and showed them around to some other favorite spots.  Laly was already sick so we took it easy, sort of.....we went to meet Albert at The Draught House.  yum, English pub with every kind of beer imaginable (central/austin).
We chilled pretty hard then got ready for Friday.  Friday was the original party as I like to call it....The energy was in the air.  We had lost a couple bands that day but gained two amazing bands including The Pity Party & We Are Dio (formerly Dios Malos).  To say it was awesome they started the day is an understatement.  The whole day was bitchin'.  every band killed it....Free Moral Agents killed it!  They've changed alot and have way more dynamics live.
Unfortuantely at the end of the day I caught what was goin' around (flu?  cold? allergies? all of it?)  It was a rough day Saturday, still really sick.  I was bummed I didn't get to go to the Mess with Texas shows for King Khan, the Bronx, etc etc., after completing my two shows.  Also wanted to see 2-Mex at the scoot, oh well.  best laid plans, as they say.
Truth is I'm just now recovering.  But all in all, this year's SXSW wasn't a bad experience.  Anyway, I'm just getting back to everyone, and confirming more shows!
Cheers,
xx

Current mood:  exhausted

The two shows we put together for this year's SXSW (Ikey was very involved) were killa.  It was great to see everyone from Long Beach/Los Angeles (I just moved to Austin a few months ago) and we all had fun hanging out in the band apartment, compliments of Metropolis.  More musical pool parties to come...Thanks to all the Met residents and Austinites who came out!

Yes, yes, you know the routine as Apu might say on Simpsons.  I'm now a Twit-ter-er.  My url: twitter.com/chasefrank follow me damn it!  The insights and gory details will at least make you laugh if only for the mispellings from texting from a cell phone in very dark rooms.  I'll be giving you one-liners from SXSW shows and gutters and quoting famous people I run into, and when I say famous, I mean to me, not you necessarily :)  (Like Ice Cream Man, hi Matt!).

PERFORMING WEDNESDAY MARCH 18th!! (below)

BLANK BLUE
photo plastic <st1:City w:st=
Los Angeles producer Nobody had already established himself as a mainstay in the left-field hip-hop scene by the time he decided he wanted to follow up his 2003 Ubiquity release, Pacific Drift: Western Water Music, Vol. 1, with one that featured one singer. Soon he approached Niki Randa, with whom he had worked in the same Long Beach.... record store since 2001, asking her to add her vocals to some of his possible beats. The result, titled "Sonic What?!," pleased both of them so much they decided to go ahead with the full project, utilizing the help of their many acquaintances to fill out and develop their sound, and also performing at Nobody's Low End Theory night at the Airliner club. Calling themselves Blank Blue, the duo released Western Water Music, Vol. II (whose title was based on jazzman Gary Bartz' Harlem Bush Music), a concept album that dealt with an Armageddon-type earthquake that sank the state of California, on Ubiquity in May of 2008. Now a four piece live band, Blank Blue is striving to deliver psychedelic pop as loud and live as they can!  www.myspace.com/blankblue

I’M GORGEOUS INSIDE

I’m Gorgeous Inside is an experience you will not soon forget. From the depths of the Mariana Trench to the peaks of the ..Himalayas.., there is nothing that will prepare you for their fierce onslaught of puppies, dating tips, and loving tributes to everyday household items. They met in Austin, but their roots are in small-town  Texas, and the two perspectives are combined with deftness and precision. Their sound is an amalgam of rock, country, death metal, torch songs, and pure redneck sexual lust. Live performances have been known to inspire speaking in tongues, also weird dancing that has been mistaken for seizures in some cases. If you can’t take the heat, take yer clothes off. www.myspace.com/imgorgeousinsideband

THE HAPPY HOLLOWS
SCardoza Photography....
The Happy Hollows is a raucous three piece rock band from ....Los Angeles.... that play fast and irreverent noise-pop. The band writes melodic and quirky songs with odd arrangements. Among other things, the subjects of their tunes include Vietnam flashbacks, palindromes, the colors of the rainbow, labyrinths, time travel, mythical animals, and Tarot cards. Myspace.com/thehappyhollows.

CHASE FRANK
what the!035!%035???.
Chase Frank is a multi-tasking maniac who approaches music as art. Her live-loop-guitar-samplings may mesmerize as she blends torch vocals, vintage guitar and witticism. In her nine lives, she has produced California festivals, organized show upon show, and toured the country in support of her albums. Originally from Long Beach.., ..CA.. she now resides in Austin, TX and records & tours regularly. Band mates are project-based and have included La Dawn Best, Ahmad-Jamal Butler and a delicious array of guests including Beegs (Coaxial, GSL).  www.myspace.com/chasefrank.

 THE FLING
By Gregory J. Aune
The Fling is a Long Beach, CA based band that blends together a unique mix of folk, pop, and psychedelic rock to create a sound that is both familiar and new.  While influenced by the use of three and four part harmonies from such sixties groups as The Everly Brothers and The Beach Boys, the group maintains a modern experimental side in the vein of bands like Grizzly Bear and The Pixies. Their songs can range anywhere from a slow, acoustic waltz to a complete wall of sound.  Constantly experimenting with multi-layered harmonies, arrangement and instruments, the result is always interesting.  www.myspace.com/thefling....

POWERHAMMER
wtf am I supposed to be looking at.
The very mention of this name inspires fear in some, fervent adulation in others, and complete indifference in those who haven’t yet been exposed to his supernatural talents. Known for eclectic DJ sets, he morphs his soundscape to fit the moment’s vibe. Over the last 8 years, he’s played all over Texas to crowds ranging in size/shape from a couple of swamp rats sitting on his kitchen table to an entire herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle. He plays for people too, but only if you ask real nice-like. Book him, or be damned to mediocrity forever.  myspace.com/alanselectronicmuse

PERFORMING FRIDAY MARCH 20th!!!! (below)

FREE MORAL AGENTS
....
Free Moral Agents is the brainchild of Isaiah Ikey Owens, Grammy Award winning keyboardist for The Mars Volta & De Facto.  The Long Beach, CA-based Owens initially started Free Moral Agents as a solo project.  It has since expanded into a group effort, a result of Isaiah's decade-long career of collaborations with artists as diverse as El-P, Mastodon, Sublime, Saul Williams, and Z-Trip. Free Moral Agents released their debut ‘Everybody's Favorite Weapon’ on GSL Records in late 2004.  With freestyle moments layered over vibrant melodies, heavy beats, and jazzy interludes, ‘Everybody's Favorite Weapon’ was just the beginning of something that was no longer considered just a side-project.  Free Moral Agents is now gearing up to release their new album Honey In The Carcass Of The Lion, an EP titled Control This and a 10" vinyl collaboration with Fela Kuti's legendary drummer and Afro Beat co-founder Tony Allen titled North Is Red.  www.myspace.com/freemoralagents....

NOBODY

Nobody (Elvin Estela), has been a fixture in the Los Angeles music scene since the early 1990s, first as a producer for many of the premier emcees at the Good Life Cafe/Project Blowed, and then as a remixer, producer, and important member of the global electronic and indie-rock communities. He has worked with, remixed, and toured in support of the Postal Service, Prefuse 73, Mars Volta, Aceyalone, Mia Doi Todd, and many others. His releases for Ubiquity and Plug Research have garnered him not only critical praise, but the clout to define and redefine his sound as he sees fit. His productions effortlessly flow from the hip-hop themes of his early career to the psychedelia and rock motifs of his most recent work with Blank Blue, and his vast musical vocabulary allows him to deliver with each and every mix.  www.myspace.com/nobodyelvin

DEATH TO ANDERS
Photos by Zoe-Ruth during Gary Smithson39s Ghost Rock video shoot outside of <st1:City w:st=
DEATH TO ANDERS Death to Anders are an indie rock/roots band formed in ....Los Angeles.... in 2006. Their lineup consists of Rob Danson (vocals and guitar), Nick Ceglio (vocals, guitar, keys), Peter DiBiasio (bass and vocals), and John Broeckel (drums).  Often compared to Pavement, early Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth, but ultimately considered "unclassifiable" and "fresh”, Death to anders mix smart, sometimes noisy, rock with quirky, Gothic Americana.  They are active in the ..Echo.. ..Park.., Silverlake, and underground gallery music scenes in ..Los Angeles.. and were founding members of the Central Second Collective, a group of up-and-coming rock musicians dedicated to promoting innovative, new music in ....Los Angeles..... www.myspace.com/deathtoanders....

DJ DENNIS
Bringin back the Fonz.<SPAN style=
Music is a love and a lifestyle for Dennis Owens. He’s been in bands since 1989 and a DJ since 1998. As a co-founder of The Good Foot (Long Beach, CA) and Space Rollerdisco (Los Angeles, CA) he truly is part of a group that make the musical Southern California world go around. Dennis Owens is also bassist for Free Moral Agents and THE vinyl aficionado of Long Beach’s Fingerprints Records
