Current mood:  ashamed
People,
Our pals, CLOWNS, a fine band of brothers, movers and shakers will be gracing The Albert stage around about 8pm on the 22nd of this month. Expect lyrical relationship-based embarrassment, brutal chromatic chord changes and a fair old amount of hasty face paint.
Come.

Restlesslist write: we will also hopefully be planning more gigs throughout April and May and a new single sometime soon. Also, I (Matt) have been recording Brighton trio Foxes! debut album, which is out soon. They are touring in April joined by me on extras. Check out the dates on their myspace and come down and see us. Very good stuff! More vagueness soon. Happy happy joy joy. Matt x and Restlesslist

Alex White recently stood in on drums for Official Secrets Act and they have mentioned him a few times in their Myspace Tour Blog Some quotes from them about Alex (ESP have not played any gigs recently, sorry for any confusion)

18th March:
We’re now back in the flat (flats in berlin are absolutely awesome, Peaches used to live in the flat below the one we’re in) listening to Jay Zs Glastonbury set with our stand in drummer Alex White of Electric Soft Parade/Brakes fame.

13th March: We are standing at the top of the tower of the Dom, Cologne’s super famous, super impressive, gothic cathedral. Alex, our stand in drummer, surveys the bell towers and suggests that religion seems to inspire the most noble and the most foul of human achievements.

Thomas writes:
Firstly, may I say what a fab time I had touring with Mr. Patrick Wolf (myspace) An absolute pleasure from beginning to end. You can get the gist fromthe many videos of the shows posted up on YouTube. Personally, my favourite was most definitely the Heaven show - by that point the band had really started to gel, and everyone properly leaned into it. Big shouts to the whole team for making it special - Patrick, William, Jon, Nick, Vicky, Marcello, Laura and Nick - legends in their own lunchtimes, as they say.

I will leave you with the news that my forthcoming second solo record has finally found a home. At present I can't disclose any other information, other than that it is finished, and when I get a minute to myself, I shall put the darn thing out and do the right thing and come to your town and quite possibly play some of it. Good times. TWX

More news to fit in before the next update...

Update from Thomas (Myspace) On top of all the rad touring Brakes have coming up (both in the UK with Voluntary Butler Scheme and 'round Europe with, among others, The Fray!) the lovely Patrick Wolf has requested my rock action for his upcoming UK dates. It's a different slant for me, that's for sure, but his stuff's great, very theatrical, gothic and layered - right up my street - and it's an absolute honour to be asked. Earlier this year I added some guitar to his forthcoming record, and from the mixes I've heard he used a fair amount of what I laid down, which is charming to say the least! Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to the shows, and it would be lovely to see some of you ESP/Brakes-heads there in amongst 'em!!

8 March: The Arts Centre, Colchester - live video: 'Accident + Emergency'

9 March: The Guildhall, Gloucester - live video: 'Blackdown'
(Thomas provides the drumbeat half way through)

10 March: The Junction, Cambridge - live video:
'Hard Times'
(Patrick's new single... lots of Thomas White's "rock action" !!)

12 March: Heaven, London - live videos:

Hard Times - Patrick introduces the band at 3 mins 30 ("Tom White on the fucking guitar")

13 March: KOKO, London (the Heaven video footage is much better)

Patrick Wolf Myspace His Blog is a total inspiration against the horrors of the music industry...

"This is a brave new world we face. I refuse to let the crumbling industry around me make me have to give up this life long passion and journey I've been on"

"I recently met the actress Tilda Swinton and she filled me with so much fire thinking about Derek Jarman; to me, the greatest outsider and visionary of British Film. I think about him down in Dungeness making one of his last films, "The Garden", With a couple of old Super 8 cameras; no script, no money, and hardly any eyesight, making a true masterpiece. I am from this world of creativity, when you have nothing you really make something... and when you have too much, you often make too little. Tilda actually ended up being the narrator for this album. She appears on four or five songs as the voice of hope against all my negativity... The album has been blessed!"

He is releasing this album himself with help from his fans.

Listen to a mix of new songs at his Myspace and read about how the album came to life here

"This was not the album that my last label wanted me to be making; I guess I'm not family friendly or conservative enough to play that game, and I am getting a bit more fearless as I grow older. Not really been one to compromise with businessmen in my life, so I thought why should I start now when I'm at my most self confident and passionate about the sound of music that I want to create and explore? So with album 4... I'm back in the free world of Independent Music"

The Pipettes appear at Wonky Pop at Matter, The O2 on March 20th and Brighton's Great Escape Festival on May 14th.

Just a quick round-robin to draw your attentions to some White Brothers-related releases coming your way in 2009:

As you may already know, a new Brakes record is now finished and ready for an April release. The album, entitled 'Touchdown', was recorded in Glasgow with former Delgados drummer Paul Savage, and will be in all good (and some shit) record stores on the 20th of that month. Yowza. The band head out for a short UK tour in support of first single 'Hey Hey' at the end of January. Check http://www.myspace.com/brakesband for dates and deets.

On a solo note, Thomas has now completed two (yes, two) new albums, the first of which he is currently mastering/sequencing and sorting a label for. What with schedules being what they are, it's unlikely they'll see the light of day this side of summer, so in the meantime, head down to his myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thethomaswhite) for a taster. Why not ask to be his mate, too - he might even accept!

In other Brighton news, we have new Restlessslist and Pipettes albums in the, er, pipeline (check both bands' myspaces/webpages for up-to-date information), not to mention the solo debut album from Rose Elinor Dougall. If her recent shows were anything to go by, it should be lushness in the extreme. With bells on.

And finally we come to the news of a forthcoming (fourth) ESP longplayer. Tentatively titled 'Blue Music', the (20-track double) album will include live favourites of the past year 'Things Snowball' and 'We Don't Need To Fight Anymore', both previously heard here on myspace. More details on that later.

Oh, and a Happy New Year to one and all!!!!!!

luv,

ESP

Thomas is fast becoming an institution. Best known for his work with brother Alex in the Electric Soft Parade and Brakes, he has also played for a host of other acts including Sparks, Restlesslist, BSP and Clowns. Here though he releases his solo work. It is beautiful prog-psych folk. A musician of almost immeasurable talent (myspace)

Also at Drift: Rather than your average poll, Drift asked everyone on the roster to give their summary of the whole year; opinions on records, live shows, clothing, dinners and acapella rock music. Starting with Thomas White...

How was your year? - Thomas White at Drift Records

My personal highlight of this year (and probably every year to come for a long while) has to be touring Europe with The Electric Soft Parade. Having spent months piecing together a set of films to accompany our 'No Need To Be Downhearted' album, it was a joy to be able to take the show around the UK late last year. To then take it all around Europe, and to have it received as warmly as it was (especially in Germany) was touching, to say the least. It was a truly rewarding experience, having spent so many lonely nights meticulously recording click-tracks and synching edits etc... we felt like we'd truly arrived as a band.

Other highlights were, of course, working with Drift on 'I Dream Of Black', ESP supporting Sparks at their 21 nights in London, and being part of the continuing gestation of Clowns, a project which is finally coming to fruition right about now! In addition, much fun was had playing with Restlesslist (new record coming soon) ....making the new Brakes record, oh and another couple of solo albums, all of which will hopefully see the light of day sometime next year.

Other notable mentions are:

- The imminent downfall of the worldwide economy... arf!!!...
- Discovering Richard Linklater - 'Waking Life' and 'A Scanner Darkly', in particular...
- Sparks - 'Exotic Creatures Of The Deep' ...
- Elbow winning the Mercury Music Prize (brought a wee tear to the eye!) ...
- Obama winning the election (hell, yeah)...
- RTX finally touring the UK properly...
- Wild Beasts - 'Limbo, Panto'...
- The Levellers 20th Anniversary show at The Royal Albert Hall, London (great gig - insane evening all round)...
- The first 'At Home By The Sea' Festival in Brighton (great line-up...bring on next year)...
- People finally waking up to the magnificent genius of Of Montreal, even though Skeletal Lamping kinda sucked...
- Playing Summercase Festival w/ Brakes and witnessing the full force of Grinderman on the main stage...
- Blondie at the same festival...
- Cornelius at the same festival...
- The Week That Was............. THE WEEK THAT WAS!!!!!!!!!!!...

......and that's about it!
