Current mood:  strong
We're all good to go for Saturday's shenanigans with HEATHERETTE and SIMONOTRON and it's all shaping up to be a cracking old night.

Now though, to early Yuletide news. The Rumba is taking a small Christmas sojourn in the Merchant City this year, more specifically, Blackfriars Basement. It's all happening on Sunday December 27th and we have some special old friends dropping in including THE ID PARADE, THRIFTSHOP XL, DJ B*LICIOUS AND DJ SMC.

We'll be running that night from 10 until 3. Which is nice. And it goes without saying that it would be wonderful to see you all there. Tickets are a mere six quid but we're giving two lucky people the chance to get there for free by answering the following question;

NAME TWO FAMOUS FACES THAT HAVE APPEARED ON RUMBA FLYERS.

That applies to Rumba flyers from the very start so it shouldn't be too difficult a task to rummage around for the answer. The first person to get in contact with the answer wins. Simple as that. You can get in touch via Myspace, Facebook and email twokanguru@googlemail.com. And we will announce the winner by way of al

l of those.

That ol' Rumba bus is rolling back into town next Saturday and it's jam-packed with some very special kinda people.
For starters we have a much anticipated debut for you in the form of the veritibable vamp of filthy electro punk disco, Heatherette. She, along with her band of twisted minstrels, are at present working with the man who produced The Young Fathers' album and single so you'll know we are assured of something that surfs high over and above the dross and the drivel.

'...the sound? Yeah, well, imagine throwing The Cramps, Peaches, a drum
machine and that "Dirty Boy" video by Angela Viracco in "The Last
Dragon" into a blender with the puree blade on full blast, pulsing it a
few times to make a textured sludge of amazingness. Which is to say,
it's tons of fun, the guiltiest of pleasures and full of the pomp that
only someone consumed by throwback metering and "Genius Of Love" would
take into consideration. We really really love this song "Canary" with
its stop-start drumming and arrangement of swirling cinematic effects
and the washes of sometimes hushed and sometimes shouted vocals.'

Here's a teaser to give you an idea of what to expect.

Also on our crazy coach and blocking the aisle with his big eclectic bag of funk, disco, and electro epicurean delights, is the fun-loving cyborg/humanoid DJ behind Edinburgh's Club For Heroes, SIMONOTRON.

And causing a rumpus at the rear is the usual bunch of discrepant ne'er-do-wells that constitute the Rumba crew. And with the Magnate Soundsystem stowed away in the luggage hold there's nothing to stop the whole thing careering into town like the latest instalment of the Speed movie franchise. Only better. And funkier. And without the guy from Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure. And cooler. Much cooler.

In some of the other rooms, some other stuff you might be interested in including Mark Robb, JG Wilkes, Harri & Domenic and much much more. Check da flyer folks, this is a biggy!

This Saturday we have a guest appearance from Dub and Reggae
specialist, The Groove Gangster, along with our Rumba regulars. And a
word to the wise folks, you might need ear protection. The Magnate
Soundsystem has just arrived back from Mutt n' Jeff's Interplanetary
Sound Technicians and now has the ability to make your body move in
ways most laxatives can't. The guys are going to give it a good old
bass workout so expect some foundation rattling. There's also a raffle
and possibly a surprise or two along the way.

Join the happy crowd in the charming old good-time emporium that is the
Pollok Social and gather some more astounding tales to tell the grand
kids in the years to come.

Current mood:  mad
Wondering where we've been? We been hibernating. Taking
our winter nap to recharge the Rumba power pack. But now we're back,
positively rattling with raw energy like some kind of freaky sex
machine which could quite possibly do some serious damage in the wrong
hands. But don't worry, you're safe with us and we can show you all our
health and safety certificates to put your mind at rest if need be.
We're
all really looking forward to the first Rumba of the year and to truly
get things off to a flyer we have a guest appearance from Latino kraut
funksters, CB RADIO, a bunch of German ex-pats now resident in Cuba and
visiting our shores on a mini tour, so it's a bit of a coup to actually
have them at the Rumba.
Also appearing is Rumba favourite, the Wilf
Lunn of the audio visual world, THRIFTSHOP XL, with his magic light
cabinet full of tricks and curios to dazzle and delight. Throw into the
mix a random selection of Rumba DJ's, the Magnate Soundsystem and a
rare visitation by one of the club's founding fathers, MR DADDY G, and
you have a concoction on your hands which could easily foment extreme
giddiness throughout several coach loads of aunts.
See you all Saturday, and remember, put your feet on shuffle mode.

Current mood:  jubilant
Saturday approaches and brings with it the Christmas Rumba, and, by logical conclusion, the last Rumba of the year. As per usual there will be no Rumba in January, so get down on Saturday and get a hearty Yuletide serving inside you to tide you over the cold winter weeks ahead.
Either of the two bands, Young Fathers and The Chihuahuas, could stand alone in any La Roche Rumba night but we really wanted to make it a bumper bonus celebration so we're cramming the two of 'em into the bill and to hell with the flagrant surplus of quality. In fact, these two combos may quite possibly be two of the best bands to have graced our humble environs. YF's were recently voted NME track of the week with 'Straight Back On It' (the single is released on Monday by the way) I don't think I exaggerate when I say they are BIG for '09 so get down and see them in a cosy venue before they hit the stadia. And then there's The Chihuahuas, an off-kilter, shit-kicking country collective who boast the artist formerly known as squiggle among their many fans.
Also on Saturday, bringing his bumper bag of quality funky toons back to the decks is Mr Stephen McCole, accompanied, as always, by your friendly neighbourhood Rumba DJ's and, for one month only, The Romeo Stodart Soundsystem.
There's one or two treats in store including some kind of Christmas punch concoction which probably isn't legal. This will be in limited supply so get there early if you want to partake of it. And that is really the mantra for the evening: early, early, early! It's going to be busy. We're open from 7.30 cos we wanna make a night of it so please don't be disappointed. If you come down at 11, not only have you missed half the night, there is just no guarantee you will get in. Once we're full we're full.
See you all on Saturday - Bring your Crimbo freak folks and get it on!!!

Current mood:  fermented

Well people, as the month of April approaches so too does The Rumba’s second birthday. Yes, two years ago we were partying in that dank, rank dungeon that was the Fotheringey basement with staff who cared not a jot and, almost from the start, the threat of imminent closure hanging over us like one of Big Stu’s nads.

It seems a far cry from those early days to the halcyon times we’ve enjoyed (and still do) in the commodious environs of the Ex-Servicemen’s Club. Long may it continue.

The feeling is that the April Rumba will be a busy one so the advice is to get there early. We’re planning some special treats that will hopefully act as an incentive including giving away some goodies, the shape and form of which haven’t quite manifested themselves just yet.

There will be a veritable panoply of Rumba DJ’s with the format reverting to much as it was in the early days with each DJ taking a half hour shift which should ensure a brisk turn around in musical style. But that people, is only the start of it. We can, without fear of disappointing, announce to you that we will have, playing live, as promised almost two years ago but delayed due to technical, artistic and motivational difficulties, Italo Disco outfit DEN HAAN! And having seen them make their live debut a couple of weeks ago I can tell you it’s well worth the wait. Add to that the welcome return of our lost son Mr James Gibson aka THRIFTSHOP XL and I think you will all agree that it is shaping up to be a classic Rumba.

So folks, you’ve got three weeks and three more Saturdays but remember, they’re only pracitice runs for the big one...

RUMBA ON...

Just thought I'd update you heads on the whole nicked charity bottle debacle.

The latest is that the club now think it was nicked the day after the Rumba. And as I thought, the mighty Rumba crowd are proven to be the honest and righteous citizens we all know you truely are!

To celebrate why not join us as the special guest DJ's this Saturday at the legendary Rock'n'Roll extravaganza that is STAR FUCKER at the Woodside Social, 9 till 2.

Your mother wouldn't like it.
