Films

Goddess by Satyajit Ray / DVD / OUT NOW
In Goddess (originally titled 'Devi'), Doyamoyee is left alone with her husband’s ageing father-in-law, a devoted follower of the goddess Kali. One evening, the aging widower she cares for has a dream that she is an avatar of Kali, and must be worshipped. Word spreads, and others come to believe that she is an incarnation of the deity. Hearing this alarming news, her husband, Umprasad, returns only to find Doyamoyee herself beginning to believe that she is an avatar; a belief which soon turns to tragedy.

Two Daughters by Satyajit Ray / DVD / OUT NOW
Two Daughters (Teen Kanya) tells two tales. The first is about Nanda, a young man who leaves Calcutta to work as a postmaster in an isolated, malaria-infested village. His only solace in the village is in teaching his host, Ratan, how to read and write. The second story is about a student, Amulya, who returns to his village after finishing his exams. His widowed mother is very anxious for him to marry, and has already picked out a girl. Yet he rejects his mother's choice and, being forced to choose some girl, marries a lively tomboy who is not ready to give up her freedom.

Earth by Alexander Dovzhenko will be following shortly on Mr Bongo Films.  Full info on these titles available and more please visit <http://films.mrbongo.com>

Records

20th Century Steel Band – Warm Heart Cold Steel / CD + 12” / OUT NOW
The 20th Century Steel Band has its humble beginnings as a working band on the Baileys Circuit, however 1975 saw the band record and release their debut album ‘Warm Heart, Cold Steel’. This would prove to be a landmark album, featuring the track ‘Heaven & Hell is on Earth’ which would go on to be an infamous addition to the world of sampling - artists such as Salt-N-Pepa, Xzibit, Anonymous (ft Eminem), the Black Eyed Peas on their debut album ‘Behind the Front’, The Jungle Brothers and LL Cool J (Featuring in the film ‘Take the Lead’, starring Antonio Banderas) have all sampled it. Perhaps the most famous of all tracks to sample ‘Heaven & Hell is on Earth’ is ‘Jenny from the Block’ by Jennifer Lopez (This is me …Then).

Various Artists - Latin Beats Boxset / 8CD Boxset + MP3 / OUT NOW
Previously only available as separate albums, this fantastic special-edition boxset contains over 120 tracks from the old-style mambo, boogaloo, the sounds of Fania to Latin funk and Jazz, as well as contemporary remixes from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Masters at Work, Quantic and Bonde de Role…

Sao Benitez composes the music for the new Bacardi advert

We are thrilled to annouce that we were commissioned by Rainer Kelly to compose a bespoke piece for the brand-new worldwide Bacardi ‘Island City’ campaign. A fter many hours in the Mr Bongo/Can Can studio with a variety of wonderful artists from South America and beyond (and a little rum), the end-result is a wonderful party track in its own right. Written by Mr Bongo’s own legendary producer ‘Sao Benitez’ the track features special guests including Incognito’s horn section and the untapped talent of singer/beatboxer Sammy Sarfas.

The track will be available to purchase very soon, in the mean time you can check the full advert at <http://reels.sohosoho.tv/xhtml=A8XM2C43>

INCREDIBLE BONGO BAND REMIX COMPETITION

1ST PRIZE: Ableton Live 8 + SoundCloud ProMAX account and have your remix included on the CD album
2 x RUNNERS UP PRIZES: SoundCloud ProLIGHT account and have your track included on the digital version of the album

Incredible Bongo Band was formed by MGM A&R Michael Viner in 1972 to supplement the soundtrack to the virtually anonymous B film ‘The Thing With Two Heads’, the ‘IBB’ went from loose studio collective to an instrumental pop covers consortium, interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion.

The groups cover of ..Apache.., originally made famous by The Shadows, is simply legendary in the world of dance music. Not only arguably one of the most sampled tracks of all time and a staple for Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash as they invented the art of DJing at the Bronx block parties of the ..70s, it has become an all-time hip hop and breakers anthem and is revered as the original break of all original breaks with the rhythms of this LP coining the term Breakbeat. Apache has been sampled by: Missy Elliot, Coldcut, Will Smith, Goldie, Jurassic 5, Moby, Run DMC, Sugarhill Gang, Beastie Boys and Massive Attack and many many more…

So, now is your chance to follow in the footsteps of these greats, by remixing one of the other break-heavy tracks by IBB, ‘Last Bongo In Belgium’. To get involved please visit http://records.mrbongo.com/ibb-remix/
