Current mood:  amorous

Hello, hello, hello!

Brrrrrrrr! It is cold out there so bundle up! Well, the holidaze is fast approaching and as the frenzy begins (shopping, family, and friends) take some time out for yourself to have a real GOOD TIME!

If you missed WETbar this past Sunday, check out some of the pics below. The evening was magical, the DJs off the hook, the dancers, powerfully sexy, and the WHOLE night was bumpin'! If you missed this time, DON'T miss it next time, come get wet with us on January 3rd!

Also we had hella fun up at the CURVE Holiday Party last night. DJ Olga T had us shakin' our groove thangs @ LIME. I don't think the Cuban Shuffle had ever been danced there, but we just scooted our way around the tables. Check out some of our photos from last night's event below. Special thanks to Curve for inviting us out!

This week is the GRAND OPENING of GOOD TIMES, the new WEEKLY party for women in the East Bay. This an absolutely FREE weekly event for women. Check details below. We hope to see you out tonight!

TOMORROW is Ladies Night's first annual Toy Drive Fundraiser. During this holiday season there are so many of us in need, take the time to donate to your local charities!

Wherever you spend your holiday we hope you have a safe one.

Happy Holidaze,
Miz Chris

November 30, 2009 - Monday

Current mood:  blessed
I move to the beat of my own drummer, dancing to a rhythm heard only by my heart as waves of life and love wash over me.  I am my own music.

On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, I had a Pulmonary Embolism while driving home from dropping off a friend.  A Pulmonary Embolism for those of you who do not know that term, basically a blood clot hit my lung.  Because I am terca (stubborn) when I got home I told Olga to go ahead without me to her family dinner because I didn't "feel well."  Olga ignored me and called 911.  At that time we did not know what had happened.  They ran a slew of tests all which came back normal.  We were getting ready to leave the hospital when the doctor told us that the CT Scan showed the clot in my lung.  They admitted me immediately.  What had happened to me was big and serious, but by this time I felt fine.  And down into the rabbit hole I fell..,

Very few people, really only those closest to me have known my struggle around my health for the last year and a half.  April 2008 was when I had my first blood clot in my leg.  It was superficial and the doctor, absent of any other information, told me that I shouldn't worry about it.  Fast forward a year and a half, several blood clots later, a diagnosis of Lupus, 4 cardio-vascular surgeons, 3 hematologists, 2 general practitioners,  2 rheumatologists and literally dozens of blood tests later no one could really tell me what was wrong with me or what was causing these blood clots.  I became cavalier in taking care of me, because they couldn't find anything, I resigned myself to just accept that I had some strange and unknown illness.  I had learned to live with the pain, the uncertainty, the constant doctor appointments and the impact of being sick every day while trying to live my life to the fullest.

Although the Pulmonary Embolism is not something I would choose to have had happen to me, I can say that it totally changed my life.  No, I didn't go into the light and no, I didn't have some epiphany.  BUT I did, after many months, finally find out what is wrong with me and that it is totally treatable with a long life expectancy.  I have what is called a Protein C Deficiency, which is a hereditary condition passed down through families.  For me, a long and arduous journey has finally come to completion.  I now know what I have and what I need to do to keep myself healthy.  The life change for me was more of a slow blink, your surroundings are the same but when you open your eyes after that blink your priorities have totally changed.

I don't know why it is hard for me to talk about my health or to ask for help, maybe because I feel that in me it is a weakness.  But what I found out this weekend, as friends and family poured out of the woodwork to visit me, call me, email me, post on my Wall, cook for my family that flew in from Texas, was that I am surrounded by an amazing and loving support system.  An amazing and loving support system that is invested in me taking care of myself.

And that is what I am fixin' to do.  I love my life.  There is not a moment that I am here on this earth that I take for granted.  When I was eleven I remember thinking that I never wanted to die because life was just too damn exciting.  And I have to say, decades later I feel the same.  I am not ready to leave this earth just yet.  Too many things I still want to do and see and experience.  But first on any list that I write is to make sure I am feeling well and I am doing all the things that help me feel well.

Several of my friends had "Come to Jesus" talks with me as did my beloved.  And I really heard what they were saying to me.  AND I felt very blessed to be alive to hear them.  I want to thank all of you who sent your love over the phone, internet, text and who kept me in your prayers.  I felt them lying alone in the dark in the hospital.  There is a power in friendship and community and I am grateful to have all of y'all in my life.

I am doing well.  I feel good.  The meds are kicking in.  The next few weeks will be all about stabilization.  But I am on the road to a new life, at least from a health perspective and I am excited about that!

Some people get to have this moment, some never experience it, others never get to the other side... you know the moment where you have a "before you had a life-threatening event" and "after."  I know I am blessed to have an after.  I will take my miracles anyway they come.

.... and the beat goes on.

Miz Chris here checking in from sunny Mexico! I am so very blessed to be partnered with an amazing, beautiful and beautifully talented girlfriend whose talent has taken me on adventures I never knew I would take. I am one lucky girl and I thank the universe everyday for our love. She is working here in Puerto Vallarta DJing every night for over SIX HUNDRED women. Whoot! Whoot!

Recently, on the homefront, Wednesday of this last week a few of us had the pleasure of attending Jade Studio Productions LGBT Open House. It was a wonderful little shindig over at Treasure Island benefiting Out & Equal. If you haven't had a chance to check out this AMAZING photo studio, I highly recommend that you find your way over there one of these days. The owner Phillipe and his team of award-winning photographers are the best. They have like a bazillion very interesting places in their warehouse to photograph their subjects. Although the food was fabulous and the wine divine the BEST part of the evening was the free photo shoots they were doing all night long for folks. There are TONS of great pictures but these are a few of my favorite from the evening. It was really a great time! Oh and if you ever need an extraordinary photographer, Jade Studios is the place to go. Also I want to give a shout out to Michelle Caabay-Brokstein (Charlene's Sis) who invited Olga and I to participate in the original photoshoot and organized the entire event. Thank you, thank you, thank you it was AMAZING! If you didn't make it to the event please consider giving to Out & Equal, a really great organization that fights for all of us in the workplace. Signing off.... for now Have a beautiful weekend in the Bay Miz Chris

October 16, 2009 - Friday
It has been two weeks to the day since a bevy of beautiful women of color and our allies descended upon Palm Springs. I remember the excitement and energy that pulsed through the ACE hotel as the BLISS team waited for everyone's arrival. There was a sense that we were all embarking on an adventure together and what a beautiful adventure it turned out to be.

There is a history to how BLISS weekend came into existence. Joe Hawkins, who puts together Blatino Oasis in Palm Springs for Men of Color, was over at our house last fall and quite simply said to Olga and I that we should do a Women of Color event in Palm Springs. I remember so clearly thinking what a huge endeavor that would be, but filing it in the back of my mind. Fast forward almost nine months to SF Pride when a group of amazing women, who would become the BLISS team, were producing the Women's Stage. As I watched all these powerful, exciting and capable women do their thing, I thought we can do this together. Olga and I drove down the day after Pride to Dallas, a 30 hour trip non-stop and we talked about what a Women of Color Weekend would look like, who we thought would be good for our team and if we could produce the very first one this year (2009). Maybe it was lack of sleep, maybe we were just feeling wild and free, but sitting in an IHOP in the middle of South Texas, Olga and I sat with a pen, a paper, and a blackberry thesaurus trying to find a word that would encompass all we were trying to do. BLISS was born that day. We raced back to the Bay, calling people on the phone and getting folks on board as we drove through the night. We called our friend Gigi to help us locate a hotel. We started calling DJs, performers, promoters and all our friends and on August 1st, 60 days before the event was scheduled to kick off we announced BLISS - an Oasis for Women of Color in the Desert.

We had 60 days to promote. 60 days to get our sponsors together. 60 days to hire all our DJs and performers. 60 days to get volunteers. 60 days for the BLISS team to plan and program a 4 day event. The outpouring of help from our community both locally and nationally was overwhelming and humbling at the same time. We are so grateful to all those folks who believed we could do it. And do it we did! The best part of it all is that we did it TOGETHER. From the BLISS team to the BLISS volunteers, the BLISS attendees to the BLISS sponsors, we created a space that was beautiful, welcoming, fun and magical.

There are no words to describe those four days except to say that will forever be burned into my mind as some of the most beautiful days of my life. It was a weekend filled with women of all ages, sizes, races, abilities together under one roof enjoying each others differences and similarities. My entire being is better for having met, talked, laughed and loved with all of you. We look forward to seeing you next year, please SAVE THE DATE:

OCTOBER 7-10, 2010

Tell your friends, aunts, cousins, neighbors to follow their BLISS.

In the meantime we cannot WAIT to see you again sooooo in the new year we will be doing our BLISS promo tour and hopefully coming to a city near you. We will be hitting New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Austin, New Orleans, San Diego, the Bay and a few other cities. Stay tuned for details.

Finally, I have to say I miss our BLISS. I miss the village we created for those magical four days. I miss seeing you all when I wake up. I miss swimming at 2am in the morning in our street clothes and playing a mean game of water volleyball. I DEFINITELY miss the wet t-shirt contest ;) However, I see all the connections that have been made and that continue to grow. And I know that next year's BLISS will thrive with those connections made and those connections yet to be made.

Until then I leave you with some photos of our weekend together.

We will see you soon!
