Dear Beautiful Souls,

On Saturday, April 11, 2009, I was treated to The Leonard Cohen Concert at the new Nokia Theatre in L.A. by my friends the Petit's,
(Michael is Leonard's graphic designer, art curator, etc.)

First off, the acoustics were so incredible in this new venue...pristine,
crystal clear and yet sonically warm. A sonic feast.....

Leonard's band was absolutely amazing !!!!  United, magnificent
and so on top of it, with him....

And then the one and only, poetic Maestro, Leonard..... Oh, what can I say.... he is  the most charming, engaging, and intimate artist, live, that I've ever seen....(and I have seen some incredible concerts)...

He has a genuine love affair with his audience.... with his gratitude and graciousness....it's as if he's honoring you as a listener for being there....on bended knee....

From the moment that I heard his writing many years ago.... "Suzanne", "Halleluya" and so many more....the depth of his work into the human psyche was completely spellbinding....
a mastery of poetic substance.....empowering and subtle with full gestures of such wisdom of Heart and of understanding human nature !!!!!  and Romantic Love....a poetic dance of life well lived to the fullest.....

That was an experience that I will never forget !!!!!!

And yes,  just above is a photo of the renowned actor, Dustin Hoffman, in the VIP Room.......this is where I shook hands with Sting, who was very gracious and friendly !!!!!!

A most phenomenal night !!!!!!

Hi Beautiful Souls,

On Saturday I was invited by my friends Michael and Janet Petit to a very special event: an evening combining Leonard Cohen's words and images with Philip Glass' music. Michael curated the first part of the evening, a private art show of Leonard's works. Michael also does all the graphic art for Leonard Cohen's CDs, DVDs, promotional materials and merchandise, in addition to curating Leonard's art shows, like this one.

The event, "An Evening with Philip Glass", included the art show, dinner, an interview with Philip Glass and the performance of "Book of Longing", his recent collaboration with Leonard Cohen.

The evening started off with a private showing of Leonard Cohen's own artwork, which was intriguing, excellent and quite powerful. On our way to sit down to an exquisite dinner, I had the chance to meet Leonard Cohen's great drummer, Raphael Goyol. Then I had the distinct pleasure of dining with Leonard's illustrious manager, Robert Kory and his lovely wife.

After dinner, we were treated to an excellent interview, conducted by Pulitzer Prize winner, Tim Page, where Philip revealed how his collaboration with Leonard Cohen had come into being. "Book of Longing" draws its text from Leonard Cohen's book of poetry by the same name and also includes Leonard's artwork.

Then we proceeded to the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at Claremont McKenna College, to listen to the performance of "Book of Longing". Philip Glass not only composed the music but also performed the keyboard alongside 9 other singers and musicians. The conductor, Michael Riesman (who has conducted many of Philip's scores in the past) also played the piano throughout the composition.

The performance and performers were uniformly excellent, masterfully bringing out the nuances and strengths of this amazing work.

Oh what an inspiring night!!!

Hello Beautiful Souls,

Last weekend I had so much fun at the NAMM show in Anaheim, here in California !!! I was able to meet and hear some amazing musicians and see lots of exciting new music gear and software that's coming out this year.

It was also great getting to meet some of the people that make the fine sounds that I so enjoy. There was Eric Persing from Spectrasonics (I love Omnisphere!), Nick Phoenix from Quantum Leap, and of course the innovative Ernest Cholakis.

On the musician side, I met electric guitarist Søren Andersen, Brazilian rock guitarist Kiko Loureiro, and even the awesome keyboardist for Dream Theater, Jordan Rudess, as well as many others. There were too many great musicians to count!

Photobucket

I'd also like to thank Ernest Cholakis from Numerical Sound, who I met for the first time only a few days before the show at dinner with Per and Brent Randall (from Recording Magazine and ProRec.com).

Thanks Ernest: Per and I wouldn't have been there without you!

For anyone that hasn't heard them, Ernest makes some of the most beautiful IR reverbs that I have had the pleasure of hearing and using. You can hear them on many of the songs on my page. He also collaborated with Dan Dean at Pro Audio Vault to create a beautiful sampled Blüthner piano.

Ernest: we, didn't get any pictures this time! We'll have to snap some the next time you're here.

Hi Beautiful Souls,

My good friend Roine Sangenberg just released his new CD, "An Angel's Longing", and we collaborated on the title track together. My contribution on the song was writing the lyrics and vocal melody, performing and recording the lead and background vocals here at Dreamtown Studios. All other elements were composed, performed and recorded by Roine at Movement Studio.

An Angel's Longing - Full Size

You can hear more of the album at Roine's page at www.myspace.com/sangenberg.

Enjoy!

Hello Beautiful Souls,

Joyeux Christmas! O Holy Night is my favorite Christmas song...

I have sung it many times as a vocal soloist, ever since the tender age of ten.

It has been a great pleasure to finally arrange and record a rendition the way I have always heard in my head.

It features a harpist (Laura Glouster) and mandolin player (Donny Ward) against the gentle background of a children's choir.

I hope this interpretation warms your heart and stirs your soul...
