Got back from NorCal Sunday. Of course I left Wednesday with only a vague idea of how to survive for the next 4 days, and that bit me in the butt. My dear 'ol friend/roommate is not the camping enthusiast I am,and the cold rainy weather was a deal breaker. We spent Wednesday night in the car in Morro Bay, and I heard about it the rest of the next day. Thursday the campground I'd planned to stay at in Half Moon Bay was in the middle of the predicted downpour, and I was roped into half-paying for some overpriced motel room (this happened Saturday night too).
Other than spending way more $$ on crap I hadn't planned on, I did enjoy the sights. Morro Bay Xmas morning was getting drenched, so we decided to catch the infamous rock on the way back (missed it). Stops along the way to the Bay were for Missions San Miguel and San Juan Bautista. SJB is a cute small town with a cute resident 'mission kitty'. That evening I had the best dinner I'd had in a long time @ my friend's stepbrother's mother's house (Whew!) Lamb, prime rib, stuffed potatoes...mmm mmm.
Friday we stayed with the stepbrother and his GF in Elk Grove, and saw some of the sights of Sacramento. Small city area that I don't think I saw enough of;we went in the evening as it was getting dark and kinda explored around there. Everything closed grandma-bedtime early, so we roamed the streets taking night shots. *Shameless plug here: trip photos @ photophanatic.deviantart.com*
Saturday was for SF. This is definately an area that requires better planning. Next time I definately have to research public transportation as I think I spent half the day on the carseat trying to maneuver around this city with more 1-way streets than downtown LA (yes, its true!) But we got to see some mochi-pounding at Japantown and try some delectable stuffed crepes, which I NEED more of.  Chinatown was godawful touristy;the best thing to come out of there was seeing the invisible bike cat painted on the side of a building. We went to Fisherman's Wharf @ night, which was packed of course. Did get some good clam chowder though and "interesting" people to watch/listen to. Finished up with a trip to Ghirardelli and tried the Peppermint Bark Sundae (SO goooood....).
Next day was for packing and coming back. I made a point to stop at the missions I missed coming up, San Antonio and La Soledad (which had more mission kitties for me to play with ) It's a real pain in the ass getting to San Antonio:it's 23 miles off the highway and you have to pass through a military base and have your DL and car paperwork scowled at by some gruff lieutenant (or whatever rank he was), but worth it when you get there: tons of scenery, we didn't even get to finish looking around and stayed too late.
It was too dark driving back to make it to Morro Rock or Mission San Luis Obispo unfortunately. So I guess at least my next trip is set right there. Definately tried to see too much in too short of time, but you gotta make the most of 4 days. Would definately want to stay in SF or SLO area for the whole time on the next trip. Hopefully soon!

Current mood:  adventurous

I used to consider myself a straight shooter in regards to my photo aesthetic. Abnormalities annoyed the hell out of me, and I know I threw away less-than-perfect negs and blurred shots from my digital P&S. And I don't even know what got into me,but all of a sudden about 3 months ago I felt the urge to finally EXPERIMENT!!

I got some interesting stuff when I started night photography, but that wasn't adventurous enough. So (probably late in the game compared to most) I got a Holga and a Polaroid--yeah,I needed one as soon as they decided to make Polaroid film obsolete. And now...I love them, for completely different reasons.

The Holga forces me to let go of all my intentions. I can make a composition in the right distance and lighting, but that doesn't guarantee a single thing. I was kinda nervous getting my 1st roll back that I shot in the Sequoias--would I love it or hate it? And sure, half the roll was unusable, but as for the rest--I was totally impressed with the results! So much so I'm putting some in the Photo Club's show in 2 weeks. The stranger the neg turned out,the more character it had. Even photos I though were pretty simplistic when shooting them are given a whole new feel just from the Holga's quirks. Someone who found out I just got a Holga in my photo class suggested taping up the sides to prevent light leaks. Well guess what?! I want light leaks! I want light leaks, and vignetted dark corners, and forgetting to adjust the crappy little measuring device to give unexpected depths of field. My Holga's unleashed the crazy that was always there(as I'm sure some of you know),but that I hadn't let filter into my art.

The Polaroid was a whole different story. I hadn't really thought much about shooting a couple pics with my parents' olf one years ago;I certainly didn't take it seriously as a camera. Now that Polaroid's getting rid of their film, shooting with mine has extenuating circumstances kind of. They aren't the throwaway snapshots the Polaroid's been used for most of its existence. Not to mention the price for 10 exposures is sky-high now. It's the same old instant shooter, but I've used mine as carefully as I would set up a shot meant for my Yashica or 4x5. It's instant exposure doesn't make the setup any less important. I kinda am approaching each shot I see as a mini-masterpiece,instead of something to be flung around casually. The colors and detail aren't as vibrant as I see them, but hey, that's a quirk of Polaroid and like w/my Holga,I've gotten some shots I can't imagine liking as much as if I'd taken them w/one of my "straightforward" cameras.

Whew! Well...congrats to you if you read this whole outburst, but I'm just excited about my new creative outlets. And p.s....my bday's next week,so how 'bout some outrageously priced packs of polaroid? ;)

Sooo...I got the full-time job at Freestyle Photo Supplies, which means I:

a) Don't have to worry about how I'll manage to stay up in LA anymore

b) No longer have to spend $100 a week on gas for going down to LB

c) Will FINALLY have a job that pertains to my interests!

PLUS...I've got a kitty up here now! Her name's Bathsheba, and she's insane! In a good way. I think she's just missing her sibs right now though. I have to give her a bath,so she wasn't allowed in my room last night. She was crying about being alone though, so yeah...I slept on the couch to keep her company. Total cat sucker here.

So I started out going to San Juan Capistrano with Diana and Chris Monday. Shot some good stuff. Oh,I forgot to mention I’m trying to do a documentary on the California missions for my final doc photo project. Looks like it might just have to be the Southern CA missions now though. ANYWAYS...back to the story...

Tuesday...hmm...have no recollection what I did up til evening when I drove down to SD. Went to the Carlsbad flower fields Wednesday morning, more good stuff :) Then kept going up to San Luis Rey mission. Definately not as impressive as SJC. Back to CV after that, where JC initiates me into that warm fuzzy bliss that can only come from top-shelf silver Patron (plus a couple beers after that--some kind better than Blue Moon! Stock...stock...eh,I’d have had to be sober to remember.) Then back home to say bye to the fam and pets. At this point, I had decided to head up to...Santa Barbara!!!

So I hit missions San Buenaventura (got there after closing, snuck in through the garden gate)  and Santa Barbara, then turned in for the night at Rachel’s, who GRACIOUSLY lent me a place to stay. Yay!! And after all the niceness, forced her to be a part of my current doc project. Yeah, I’m ruthless. And I finally got to see Across the Universe, which was pretty neat. Yeah yeah,no one can really cover the Beatles properly, but the movie was strung together nicely.

Soo...starting out this morning at 7:30 AM towards Solvang to see mission Santa Ines. Oh,but before that...I go to get my car off the SB street, and there’s a big cracked indent on the back of my passenger rearview mirror, like someone hit it. So I’m kinda pissed, and make a mental note to get it fixed in a few weeks (you’ll appreciate the irony of this later).

Santa Ines...kinda small, but a pretty garden. Apparently they don’t let people walk through it anymore, though. And then another 20 miles to Lompoc and the La Purisima mission, which I remembered from the family’s mission tour 10 years ago. I remembered there was 1 that had a long pink building and still kept farm animals there. Took more pics here. And then time for the big ’ol trip back.

Can’t believe I survived a trip from SD to SB and back to LA w/o incident until like a minute after I get off the freeway...I’m sideswiped by the city bus at Stearns and Bellflower, and the mirror in question snaps right off and bounces into my passenger seat. And the molding broke off, and the right side is scratched to shit, the window is squeezed...

So now I’m back with my car in the shop, trying to write a stupid report on Kuba raffia cloth, with memories of a Spring Break that almost turned out pretty OK.

Ahhhh...for once,a visit home was just what I needed! I noticed at work today my hand twitch went away! Stupid school...stressing me out.

Unfortunately,I also felt horribly sick today. Maybe because I had some kind of cake or pie or cinnamon bun for 3 straight days for breakfast and snacks in-between,plus eating the cookies Britt's mom made for her to bring to work. Eh...it was worth it!

Also cool--I got FOTC and the Futurama movie on DVD.Yep,I already watched them both--the whole series in 2 days. And yes,Futurama was worth the wait, although the ending was kinda lame. And I got to introduce my little brother to FOTC,who became an instant fan after hearing "If You're Into It". Of course...

And Julian was an awesome mini-getaway as usual. Only it was FREEZING,with wind just making it worse. AND I took off my gloves so I could use my camera. Yes,I'm prepared to suffer for my art  Plus we got more pie there. And I got an awesome vintage hat store sign of live cats in hats.

Oh yeah, this is interesting...my brother was telling me how our mom had the Xmas music going nonstop as usual...

"Yeah,Chirps (1 of the new cats) will just run around the house while the music's going as usual...until the Harry Connick Jr. CD comes on."

"What does he do then?"

"He'll just go into the kitchen and sit on the floor until the song's done!"

Weird cat...

...but I just got a Speed Graphic on ebay! For *just* $290,plus shipping. Yeah,I know I can't get with the times of digital photography and I'm hopelessly old-school and now I have no $$ for Xmas gifts...but I'm still excited! Now my final goal is the Canon Rebel (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-10-1MP-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B000I1ZWRC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-2735093-0492007?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1194513402&sr=1-1). Judging by my finances,I'll probably be able to get it around the time the next version comes out :P

I've been at my photo portfolio all week til night-due Monday, I've got a throat full of phlegm, 2 other projects due the 30th I've had to blow off to work on portfolio, and some fucking asshole just rear-ended me on the way home from work--and kept going!! Fucker. OK,how can I have had a shitty car for almost 2 years with no accidents, and now that I have a nice one for just 9 months that I have to pay for myself, it's some Moronic Driver Magnet with rear-endings within a month and a half of each other?! I swear I'm going to go postal.Grrrr.

Sunday I got my NEW car (well, its an '05, but practically new)! It's a silver Kia Optima. SO much better than that piece of crap I've been dealing with.I've actually got a radio and AC now! Yeah, I'm even more in debt now, but whatever. I'm just mad that all I got for the old car was $100, but still...I have a NEW CAR! WHEEE!
