Elsewhere, London-based black metallers
Abgott rip apart the Sophie Lancaster stage with their blast-beat-driven ‘old school’ approach. Agamoth and company have all the technical ability and theatrical appeal which makes this such a life-affirming genre, and if numbers like “Lustmord” are anything to go by they could be leading a new wave of BM.

Artist: Abgott
Album: Godfather In Black
Type: Album
Label: Helvete & Hate
I have had this for a while, having reviewed the band at the album wrap party and interviewed them for Terrorizer magazine (issue 186 plug, plug). The test of a truly good album is putting it down for a few weeks and picking it up again and being blown away all over again, this is I am pleased to say one such example. The Godfather title alludes to the group’s part Italian heritage, a statement in fact to both fans and detractors that this is the next step and they are declaring themselves as the mob in control, leaders and not followers within the scene.
Last album ‘Artefact Of Madness’ took the group to another level, certainly as far as the already technical excesses of ‘Fizala’ were concerned. However the group have never really got the sound that they deserved but here this is all changed by a superior mix, which is sharp and contrasts all instruments and vocals with much clearer definition. Changes in the line-up has led to new drummer Morgawr and bassist Robin ‘Graves’ Eaglestone (who has since album completion left to be replaced by Triserial ) tightening things further and upping the ante even more.
This was received by me in a lovely steel-box DVD type case and I have been told these should be available on album release in some limited supply but it is the music contained within that is the real test right! Intro ‘616’ is a short Bach like Toccata before ‘Obscure Renaissance’ fires away with riff work that dashes all over the place, changing direction as it basically bounces off one wall and into another. Vocals are evilly dictated, like a vile sermon and the instrumentation apart from a swift stop/start never really stands still for a second. Schizophrenic would be a good description for it but unlike a true mental case it does actually makes some sort of sense, although I would not have a chance explaining it fully in musical terms. Guitar solos fly out with a virtuoso zeal not really seen by many within black metal and then the progressive beard stroking flow of ‘Innocent Breed’ is next to gallop in and leave you even more bamboozled by the fluidity of it all. The fact that the band is composed of members who actually teach music is apparent here but hopefully it is something that those untalented and not in a band can enjoy in equal measures.
There are also some track bridges (de)composed by the bands ghost member Kaoma Mega, adding atmosphere and a bit of breathing space from the deranged rifferama. My favourite is ‘Horror’ the albums penultimate track as it effectively evokes the spirit of Goblin and John Carpenter treating us to a real short but sweet horror show. I am reminded a bit of Emperor’s final album Prometheus and perhaps British band Thus Defiled as far as the fretwork is concerned (another black metal group who believe in the power of the solo). However this really stands in a field of its own. The militaristic strumming assault of ‘Lustmord,’ spirals into dizzying heights with plenty of melody about it as it builds into a vortex of delirious riffing.
The 47 minute running time is just about right, any longer could have been too much as there is simply so much going on here. ‘Sentenced To Suffer’ is one vicious stormy number and you are left feeling like you have just survived a particularly vicious storm before being creeped out by the aforementioned ‘Horror.’ The final title track wraps everything up offering one last bewildering display of technical prowess that leaves me practically scratching my head and wanting to play it all again to see if they can possibly repeat themselves (even on disc).
I am a lone voice so whether the Godfather status is enforced by others remains to be seen but I am certainly looking forward to seeing reviews of this album and reading what others make of it all. Godfather In Black is the extreme metal equivalent of sticking your head in a blender, the question remains, are you up for the challenge of losing your head in the process?

Abgott – The Crobar London 27/5/9

I have to admit that it takes a fair bit to get me to the London’s most overrated alternative watering hole The Crobar. I have never seen a band play down at this tiny place and would have never thought it possible to fit one in there. Turning up I saw loads of people in the street and assumed they were going to something at The Borderline next door but realised they were here for the same thing as me too and wondered how the hell everyone was going to fit in. Tonight was to celebrate the wrapping of the new Abgott album ‘Godfather In Black,’ not exactly a launch party as the album had only just been completed and mixed. I left with a copy of the promo and very nice it is too in a steelbox DVD type presentation cover, but have decided to put it to one side and not listen to it before writing up my thoughts on the tracks they were airing from it at tonight’s exclusive show.

At about 9oclock we unceremoniously were ushered in from the cool street outside by what sounded like the gates of hell opening. It was however just the band starting without finesse or even a support act. I had the task of joining the phalanx of photographers at the front and not fall over or get too in the face of frontman Agamoth as the band charged into ‘Kronos Cosmic Throne’ from their last album ‘Artefact Of Madness.’ Since that era there has been some line-up change with new drummer Morgawr joining the coven. Vocals howled and rattled through us in a cavernous fashion and so did Robert ‘Graves’ Eaglestone’s hefty bass assault. With first of the new numbers ‘Obscure Renaissance,’ eyes were drawn to Thanatos dextrous guitar work which swept through with a prog laden air about it. The group have always been heavily technical in fact one of the most technical black metal bands out there and this was like the ghost of Frank Zappa had suddenly joined in and was jamming away.

With ‘Innocent Breed’ the crowd was urged to move forward and trample the photographers and space got tighter and the sound more empirical. The drumming was by now ricocheting off the walls and despite the claustrophobic proximity, everyone was enjoying themselves. None more than the frontman however who was in essence announcing ‘Lustmord’ as being a song about war. The complexity was certainly enough to leave us shell-shocked. Agamoth was trying to read the setlist strategically placed on a roof slat, not easy but I guess those tricky vamps have excellent eyesight and there was no faltering here as they furiously run riot with the amok sounding ‘Shining Insanity.’ To prove there was a sense of humour, the locals were particularly enamoured by a cover of WASP classic ‘Wild Child’ which went down a storm. You could not imagine the singer conducting it from a motorbike though, hell you couldn’t fit a tricycle in here.

Things went into a blur after that, air was desperately needed and I missed the album title track grabbing some and another beer. Still the audience were not satiated and Abgott were forced into playing quite a lot of last songs. For all the complaints about the venue it was a canny choice really as it installed an atmosphere of excitement and tension to the tightly drawn throng and by packing them into such a small place they were easy prey. Job done, now to listen to the album.

Hail to thee All

We announce a new change of line up in Abgott.
We have parted ways with our drummer Antichrist and have already replaced him with a new skin beater, MEGIDDO. He has proven himself to be in a really strong position as a successor to Antichrist and we are pleased to welcome him in the band.

We also heartily thank Antichrist for his years of hard work with us and his commitment and dedication to the cause of metal!
We understand his needs and we wish him well!

He will always be a brother in the Abgott clan!

Farewell Antichrist
welcome to MEGIDDO

Stay in tune and get ready for a new Abgott chapter of devastation!!!
