Day 7 - Mc Minnville, TN

We spent pretty much all day hanging out with J from Raging Storm Records (who had booked the show for us tonight) and his family. It was a blast. They were very hospitable and it was great being able to discuss our hearts for music and ministry. We also had some good times with Play-Doh.

The show that night was at a coffee shop/bar/music venue called Calapano’s. It was a pretty cool place. There was a coffee shop in the main part of the building, and then upstairs there was a fairly large room with a stage at one end and a bar at the other. We went in with high hopes, but were a bit disappointed to hear that both the other bands we were scheduled to play with dropped off the show. Bummer.

So we played to a VERY small crowd, but two old friends of ours, Angela and Eric (who drummed for the first band Ben and I were in together) came out and that made things a lot of fun. The guy running sound was also nice enough to pull some of his friends together to form a sort of impromptu jam/cover band so there would be a little more music than just us that night.

We went back to J’s place after the show and were welcomed by a room full of air mattresses. We stayed up and talked about the Christian music scene until late into the night.

Day 8 - Greenbrier, TN

Ben and I got to sleep in today, but Matt was up early due to the general hustle and bustle of J’s family. Ben and I have evidently learned to sleep through anything, possibility due to the fact that I grew up living with eight other people and Ben currently lives with eight other people.

We left J’s house in the afternoon. We were hoping to spend some time at Eric’s house, but he ended up being busy so we drove straight to the venue. I was asleep the whole time so I don’t remember if anything interesting happened.

The venue we played at in Greenbrier was Loudhouse Coffee. I liked the setup a lot; one room was a coffee shop and the other was a small venue with a stage. Punk concerts can be a lot of fun in small spaces. Unfortunately, this one was not.

There was actually a good number of people there, but the response was very lacking. A lot of people left after the first few local bands, and all the touring banding that played after that (there were three) played to an uninterested and constantly diminishing crowd. It was shame because I absolutely loved one of the bands we played with: The Fastest Kid Alive from Chicago. I think this ended up being the only show on this tour that we sold absolutely no merchandise.

The owner of the venue was nice enough to let us stay at his place. We got there and did our best to fit the three of us onto one futon. We decided that after going through that, our new drummer Matt was officially part of the band.

Day 9 - Louisville, KY

We all woke up this morning to a humorous conversation about Tater Tots. The family was making some for us, but unfortunately we never got to enjoy said tots. We hung out for a while then decided to leave after finding ourselves in an empty house.

Our drive to Lousville wasn’t that long, so we decided to kill some time on the road. This was principally accomplished by Flea Land (“Kentucky’s Largest Indoor Flea Market”). It certainly was large, complete with unneeded and possibly illegal items, a concession stand, and even an arcade. Ben was disappointed that there was no Dance Dance Revolution machine to be found in the small arcade.

Eventually we made it to our venue for the night, the Third Street Dive. Matt had played there several times before with his old band. We ended up being the only band that played that night, but we had a blast. For a bar show, the audience seemed to be very attentive and all the people we met there were really friendly. It’s not always easy for us to connect to the bar crowd because we don’t drink, but we didn’t have any trouble at the Dive.

We stayed with our old drummer Mitch’s mom that night. She owns two really cute beagles.

Day 10 - Evansville, IN

So today was the last day of our tour. We spent most of it doing non-music related things.

We headed over to Evansville and, in true Highway Magic fashion, wandered around the mall for a while. A nice girl in FYE took a picture of the three of us in front of an Edward (of Twilight) cutout. I’ll post pictures as soon as I have them.

Later on, Ben’s desire to play Dance Dance Revolution led us to an arcade where we further indulged in our new-found gambling habits as we tried to see how many tickets we could get with $1. In the end, we only got three party poppers. But we did get to play some DDR, which quickly reminded Ben and I how out-of-shape we are.

The final show of the tour was with Punk Rock Night Sunday at a bar called Lanhuck’s. This was actually the third time we have played there, and oddly enough, each of the three times we've played with a different drummer.

We played to a very small crowd, but I had about the most fun I’ve ever had playing to less than 10 people. PRN Evansville is always a good time, regardless of the crowd size. A fantastic pop punk band called Be My Doppelganger played after us.

The last official act of the tour was me trading the Ampeg V4 that I have used for years for a 5150 with Be My Doppelganger. I haven’t played it yet, but I’m pretty excited:

And now I’m headed straight back to Purdue. No sleep, no recovery time, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The tour went very well, and I want to send out a special thanks to MJ, Ryan and the Whited family, Nate and all the guys in Heck Veckling, Sam’s the Hero, True Liberty, Reeses Puffs, the Powells, Hannah and the 24/7 church, The Lost Skeleton of Cadavera, Jake It Away, Diamond Dan Grundy, Hannah and Russ from Casta, Justin and the MarVell, Taco Bell, J and the Scannell family, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Fastest Kid Alive, The Third Street Dive, Meat and PRN Evansville, and Be My Doppelganger (thanks for the 5150!). All you guys helped to make this tour awesome, and I can’t wait to get back out on the road all see you all again!

Day 4 - Cullowhee, NC (aka Star Wars VII: The Fugitive)

We had our second day off in Cullowhee, NC. It ended up being one of the most fun days we’ve had so far on the tour. We hung out with our friend Hannah all day. We got to do some exciting things like visiting Dillsboro where part of the Harrison Ford classic, The Fugitive, was filmed. We were lucky enough to have Harrison himself lead the tour.

We got to meet up with a lot of other friends we’ve met from the area also: Sarah, Will, Chris, Michael, Zach, and Kansas. We watched the Fugitive (of course), listened to Brian Regan, and saw my new favorite movie The Lost Skeleton of Cadavera (I SLEEP NOW!).

As always with the 24/7 church, we ended up having a fun and encouraging day, despite Ben almost suffering a concussion from repeated bonks to the head with a spoon.

Day 5 - High Point, NC

We woke up late and spent some more time hanging out with Hannah. After a few acoustic songs and some prayer, we headed out to our next show in High Point, NC. We drove straight to the venue, Arts by Alexander, and got there fairly early. We were a little surprised when we showed up to see that we were playing in an artsy home furnishing store, but there was actually a cool venue set up in a back room.

The show was great. We got on last minute so we had to open, but we still played a solid set. There were two ska bands on tour from NY, Royal City Riot and the Homecoming Queens, who were both great and a lot of fun to hang out with.

After the show we stayed with the promoter Jake and his friend. The house was really nice with a lot of signed pictures of celebrities and athletes. We later found out that his dad used to work in professional wrestling as Diamond Dan Grundy. We stayed up until around 3:00AM talking about music.

Day 6 - Durham, NC

We left Jake’s house around lunch. We didn’t have a lot to do that day as our next show was only an hour away, so we spent the day taking in the local High Point culture, which consisted of Kohl’s, Target, Old Navy, a Christian thrift store, and two different malls. We ended up spending most of the day as mall walkers.

We went to the local Hot Topic and found a guy who was really interested in my piercings. A little later on we met two girls who were really psyched about Ben’s Trigun hoodie. Ben and I also found we are predisposed to gambling as we put about $10 into trying to win a Nintendo DS from a block drop game. We didn't win anything.

Eventually we had killed enough time to head over to the venue. This is the second time we had played in Durham, NC (home of Duke U) and we were happy to see that the city was much more alive than it was when we played there last summer. We loaded into the venue and played a small but very fun show. Russ from Casta and a girl we met last time named Hannah came out and it was so much fun hanging out with them. The other bands were great and super friendly as well: Girls Make Messes, Phase Zero, and The Aints. One of the highlights of the night was a slightly inebriated girl who didn’t even see us play buying two shirts.

We had some offers as far as places to stay, but since we had such a long drive ahead of us (8 hours) we decided we should just drive through the night so we could get to the show plenty early tomorrow. And we did.

Day 1 - Cincinnati, OH

We met together in the afternoon and began packing up our touring vehicle, which will hence forth be referred to as the Magic Bus. Our first show was not too far away in Cincinnati, OH. On the way over we noticed a few things about the Magic Bus. First of all, the back seat is really far away from the front seats. We decided to make it the "time out" area. Secondly, we didn't really have any way to listen to CDs in the car because the MB doesn't have a CD player, and none of our tape adapters would work. We've had to find some creative ways around that.

The show that night was at the Blue Rock Tavern. We had played there last summer, and we all liked the venue pretty well. We loaded our stuff in and enjoyed watching Ben get completely owned by a random girl in pool. Said girl didn't stick around to watch our set.

The show had a slightly odd dynamic as it was a combination of a short concert (just us and one other band), and an art show. We went on first around 11:30PM, and played a very solid set. The band that played after us, Mona Medusa, was fun, dark, and featured possibly the best female guitarist I have seen before.

That night we stayed with our old friend Ryan. It was great to see him again, and as always, his parents were very hospitable. We left their house early the next morning with full stomachs.

Day 2 - Gainesville, VA

Most of our second day on the road was spent on the road. It was almost a nine hour drive from Cincinnati to Gainesville, and we left Ryan's house around 10:00AM.

We arrived at Rocktastica 2009 around 8:00PM. This show was particularly exciting because we played with a lot of friends: Heck Veckling, Sam's the Hero, and True Liberty. We went on not long after we got there, and had a much different performance than the previous night.

We played to a fairly large crowd and were excited to see that several of the people knew our songs. We started off strong, but had a little surprise halfway through our set when I accidentally ripped my finger open on a guitar string. It resulted in me not being able to hold on to my pick for the rest of the set, and also this:

So it ended up being a fairly sloppy set, but Ben made the most of the situation by using the extra breaks to take a few cheap shots at Twilight and promote decent literature. Our friends Sam's the Hero was up after us, and then Heck Veckling with their last performance. Their concert featured an epic intro, pillows, and tight leather pants.

We stayed after the show to help clean up, and spent the night with Nate from Heck Veckling.

Day 3 - Driving

Today was one of our two days off, and we spent most of it hanging out with Nate in Gainesville. I went to the church where his dad is a pastor that morning, and got to enjoy a potluck lunch afterwards. Mid-afternoon we started our trip south to Hannah's house in Cullowhee, NC. We made a stop in Charlottesville, VA to see some old family friends of mine. We enjoyed great company as well as a steak and salmon dinner! We left their house after a few games of ping pong and drove through the night down to Cullowhee. We arrived around 4:30AM. Our friend Hannah was still up waiting for us.

Current mood:  satisfied
Our third official release, the Star EP, is now out!

Info

The EP was recorded and mixed during September and October of 2008. It was produced, mixed, and engineered by myself (Philip Zumbrun) at the Purdue Sound Studio in West Lafayette, IN. It was mastered by Mass Giorgini of Sonic Iguana Studio in Lafayette, IN. I believe it will be the fifth release from Piradical Records. Perfomance credits include: Philip Zumbrun (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals), Ben Wolma (bass, vocals), Matthew Wilson (drums), Mitch Vice (backup vocals), Sam Eakin (backup vocals), and Mikey Midnight (backup vocals). Special thanks go out to Mitch Vice for making the studio magic happen and Rob James for some great production tips. The track list is:

1. Untitled
2. Our Family
3. A Star
4. Don't Hit Me with a Bus
5. The Noise in my Head
6. Thirteen
7. I Hate Marijuana
8. Fade Away

How to Get It

Like our last release, this EP is very easy to get online. It is available for streaming in its entirety on several sites online (including Virb, Facebook/iLike, Last.fm, and Garage Band). You can download the whole album (192kbs mp3 in a .zip file) right here.

We had an early release show on November 1st where we passed out burned unmastered copies of the EP. The final mastered version is now available online and is being pressed as I type. The pressed copies will be available starting at the Piradical Christmas Show (Dec 20th at the ES Jungle).

The album is free digitally, but we are going to be selling the pressed copies for $3. If we decide to get the album in any local record stores, we will post them here.

Making this CD was a particularly exciting experience because it is the first album that we all are satisfied with. I feel like the production and the songwriting are at a whole new level that will set the standard for our live performances from here on out. I thank all of you who helped fuel our drive and passion to make this album as good as we possibly could. In the end, it is for you, so I hope you enjoy it, and remember to distribute it freely!

Day 11

Our show tonight was in Solon, OH. We got in the area early afternoon and were surprised by the suburban oasis that we found. It was reminiscent of Carmel, except that not everyone seemed upset about life.

Anyway, we hooked up with Jordan from Positive (one of the bands playing that night) and got to hang out at his house. Mitch was psyched to find out that he was vegan. We ate Boca and had a jolly time watching VH1 downstairs on a 64" screen TV. The two arcades and signed Hank Aaron baseball bat also added a nice touch to the basement. We headed over to the venue, which just so happened to be the Solon public library.

The show was a blast. There were five acts that we unexpectedly had to cram into two hours. It somehow worked though. Overload and a fun two piece band opened the show (sorry I can't remember the band name). We went on third as the hilarious General Ledger entertained the crowd with some acoustic songs.

We played to around 80 high schoolers, and at least 15 parents. It was a fun show. I got the crowd to do a braveheart, which resulted in hilarious consequences. Unfortunately, we had to tell everyone to stop moshing before the end of our set, but it was still good times overall.

Cross the Rubicon and Positive closed out the show with solid sets. Make sure to check out Positive; they are a cool mix of indie and punk with some folk influences.

The show was great. We met and got to hang out with a bunch of cool kids afterwards. We're feeling a strong pull to come back to Solon already.

We weren't able to spend the night at Jordan's house, so we started the long trip to Cincinnati. We pulled into our friend Ryan's driveway around 5:00AM.

Day 12

We spent the day hanging out with Ryan at his house in Cincinnati, OH. The highlight was catching Jumanji on TV. Fortune was obviously smiling on us that day.

We headed over to the Blue Rock Tavern for the show. We didn't know what bands we were playing with, and we were pumped to find out that we had gotten hooked up with the Frankl Project, a fantastic reggae/ska band we have played with previously in Indianapolis.

The show was another success. There was a good crowd there, the other bands were fun, and we played a decent set. Make sure to check out Static Vessels, Kitten Frenzy (Till Plains), and especially the Frankl Project.

After the show we decided to head straight back to Indianapolis. That was hard for me, but I knew it had to happen sometime.

Day 14

Today at IMAF (Independent Music + Arts Festival) marked the final performance of our tour. There was a good crowd there, despite the fact we played in the morning. I also (unexpectedly) got to see two of my favorite students I used to teach tennis to. They were there supporting the SOLD project.

IMAF is always a lot of fun. It is cool to see art and music so closely connected at an event like this. I would encourage any of you who have never gone to check it out next year. The highlight musical performances for me were State, Wolfy, and the Last Domino.

So the tour is official done, and we all came back in one piece. We finally unloaded the van. It didn't end up smelling as bad as I thought it would.

Day 6

At this point we were all running low on sleep, so it was nice to be able to sleep until mid afternoon in a comfortable house. We spent the rest of the day before the show exploring VA Beach with Christy. We were psyched about the prospect of getting to tour the American Heritage Wild Fowl museum again, but unfortunately it was closed when we got there. Major bummer.

The show that night was at Gil's Bar and Grill. The place seemed cool, and it we were excited to be able to play on a full-size stage. We opened up the show and put on the worst performance of our tour. By this time we were all feeling tired, and my voice was completely shot. It was a bit disappointing, but we were still well received. Plus, the other bands were great. Official and the Unabombers were both fantastic, and also some of the friendliest guys we have met so far. Even though we put on a sloppy set, we still walked away feeling great.

We got back to Jeff and Christy's place around 3:30AM. We need to give a big thanks to both of them and their other roommate Matt for giving us a place to stay two nights in a row and making us feel so welcome. We love you guys.

Day 7

We didn't have a show booked for this day, but we caught word of a day-long festival going on about an hour away from where we were staying. We headed up there around noon and found out that two bands had cancel, so we got a spot! We played first and put on a very solid set. We ended up spending the rest of the long day hanging out with our new best friends, Heck Veckling. It ended up being alright, even though Mitch got in trouble for trying to sleep and drink his Mountain Dew in the venue.

Nate from Heck Veckling offered to let us stay at his place that night. We found out that he had 10 brothers and sisters who were all homeschooled, so we knew we would feel right at home.

Day 8

I went to church with Nate, and found out that his dad was the pastor. Afterwards Nate and Jesse from Heck Veckling took us out for pizza. Good times were had. We decided to head to a Guitar Center so Mitch could get some sticks, and it just so happened that Colin from Dead in Marseille was working there! We were super excited to run into him.

The rest of the day was lame. Why? Because Delaware sucks, that's why.

Day 9

We found out last night that our Philadelphia, PA, show was canceled, so we were stuck with nothing to do today. Ben rode roller coasters at Hershey Park, and Mitch and I bummed around. The highlight of Ben's day was loosing his cell phone on a roller coaster. The highlight of Mitch's day was checking out Dale's Drum Shop. The highlight of my day was giving our EP to a guy cleaning the bathrooms in the mall we went to.

Day 3

We got to Hannah's house in Cullowhee, NC, at 2:30 in the morning, and found about 12 kids hanging out upstairs. We spent the night playing games (which luckily involved Mitch putting on fairy wings and using a fly swatter as a wand), and got to bed around 7:00AM. We would have gone to bed earlier, but people kept hitting us with pillows while we were watching Mary Poppins. It felt good to be home.

We woke up for lunch around noon. We spent the afternoon exploring Sylva, NC. We tried to find a music store, but came across a cigar shop instead. In honor CS Lewis, we decided to investigate. We met the lady who owned the shop and quickly found out that she had recently moved to NC from Indianapolis. We were reminded that being on tour is totally awesome.

We eventually found the music shop, which just so happened to be the equivalent of a lousy overgrown Karma store. They did have what we needed though. We headed back to Hannah's house and got ready to play.

And play we did. Christian from Beauty Above the Thorns opened the show with a few acoustic songs (including the first Children 18:3 cover I have ever heard). We went on and played for twenty of the coolest kids in the world. It felt great. We knew almost everyone there, and almost everyone there went absolutely bananas. This show will go down in history as the first Highway Magic concert with a braveheart.

We spent the rest of the night eating and hanging out with our friends. We watched Little Shop of Horrors (a musical about a giant man-eating Venus Flytrap from another planet), and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I stayed up until about 5:00AM just talking and hanging out.

We love everyone over at the Twentyfour-7 church, and they have been the greatest blessing we have had on this tour.

Day 4

We woke up, ate, and had a time of prayer before we had to leave Hannah's house. It was difficult; we miss them so much already. I have high hopes of returning there sometime before the end of the summer.

We headed to Durham, NC, and arrived to the deadest city we have seen so far around 7:00PM. We walked around for an hour and saw nothing but law offices. Ben figured the lawyers must have to take turns representing one another. The only coffee shop we found closed before we got there. It was a little disappointing. Luckily, the show would prove to be much livelier.

We played a cool venue called the MarVell Event Center. It had a bar, but seemed to be primarily a music venue. We played a fun set to a crowd of about 40. It was great for a Wednesday night show. Shout outs to Dark Tide for a putting on a great set, Blister for being great people and playing a Ramones cover, Hannah and Emily for rocking out hard, and Casta/Dustin for setting up the show and having us back to play with them a year later!

Overall the night was a success. People enjoyed our set, we sold some merch, and got to hang out with some great bands/people. The venue was very cool as well. There is also a live recording of our set from this show, but right now it appears this will never make it out to the public.

Day 5

We didn't have a place to stay last night, so we drove to the bistro/coffee shop we were playing at that evening, CBCC. We got there around 5:00 in the morning, and tried our best to sleep on the grass. We each got around 2 hours of sleep.

We went in the venue as soon as it opened. The owner was very nice, and got us all free coffee. Around lunch time, we went over to Aaron's (from True Liberty) house, as he was kind enough to let us hang out there even though he wasn't home. We got to swim in an above-ground pool and did our best to get some more sleep. Eventually we headed back to the venue and got ready for the show.

The concert was a lot of fun. There weren't a whole lot of people who came, but all the bands were fantastic. This Black Box (local aggressive punk), Heck Veckling (our new best friends), Sam's the Hero (amazing pop punk from VA Beach), Shut Up Travis (tight touring ska band from AL), and True Liberty (local street punk) were all great. I also appreciated how much the venue wanted to support the music, and how helpful they were with all the out of town bands.

After the show we headed to VA Beach to stay with Jeff and Christy from Sam's the Hero. This was the first time we were introduced to the convenience wonder known as Wawa. Kanye West was blaring in the van the whole way there.

Day 1

We all woke up gorgy and somewhat unprepared. Last night was full of packing and preparation. We spent quite a while getting everything together, and by 1:00PM, we had found a way to cram all of our stuff into our small minivan. We hit the road with high hopes of finding adventure, excitement, and enough food/shelter to survive the next two weeks.

We rolled into Nashville around 7:00PM. We found out that (unexpectedly) we weren't going to be playing until at least 9:00PM, so we had some free time on our hands. We used this time to relax and visit the local Wallgreens (where we were tempted to buy a large fake inflatable stereo for $25). We eventually started loading into our venue that night, the FooBAR. The place had a familiar look, but quite a unique crowd. It wasn't hard to tell that almost everyone there was into punk rock, as if the fact that Rancid was blaring the entire time wasn't enough of an indicator.

We opened up the show to a surprisingly large and receptive crowd. We put on an energetic set and the crowd seemed to dig it. The other bands that played after us were quite exceptional as well. Make sure to check out Radio Death Wave, Whiskey Romance, and the Curb Side Saints.

Mitch was forced to use a house drum kit, and he found it adventurous, so one of our goals has already been fulfilled.

After the show last night, we spent a sizeable chunk of time driving around in circles trying to find Mitch's grandparents' house. We eventually did at 5:30 in the morning, and went to bed right away. We ended up getting a full night of sleep, as most of us didn't wake up until at least 3:30 in the afternoon. We hung around the farm for a while and enjoyed some stir fry and mashed potatoes for dinner. We headed out not long after that for Hannah's house in Cullowhee, NC.

We aimed to make it there by midnight, but forgot to take into account the great amount of twisted roads we had to survive. Luckily Ben enjoys driving up mountains on winding, steep, deserted roads in the middle of the night, so we made it without a hitch, and got to enjoy some nature in the process.

Our second official release, the Heart EP, is now out!

Info

The EP was recorded and mixed sometime during the months of December 2007 through March 2008. It was produced and engineered by myself (Philip Zumbrun) at the Purdue Sound Studio in West Lafayette, IN. It was mastered by Mass Giorgini of Sonic Iguana Studio in Lafayette, IN. It is the fourth release from Piradical Records. Perfomance credits include: Philip Zumbrun (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals), Ben Wolma (bass, vocals), Mitch Vice (drums, clean guitar, backup vocals), and Sam Eakin (backup vocals). I would like to give a special thanks to Jason Knox and Sandra Venegas for helping me with the mixing/engineering. The track list is:

1. Another Round
2. Another Night Alone
3. Close Minded
4. School Sucks
5. Not You and Me

How to Get It

The EP is quite easy to get! It is available for streaming in its entirety on several sites online (including Myspace, Purevolume, Virb, Facebook/iLike, and Garage Band). You can download the whole album (192kbs mp3) right here.

We will also be pressing physical copies of the CD. You can get one from us at a show, or at a variety of local stores around Indianapolis and Lafayette (list coming soon).

The album is free, but we are asking for donations. If you like the album, we would appreciate it if you gave us a few dollars. If you don't have a few dollars to spare, or you don't like our music at all, then don't worry about it

Making this CD has been another great opportunity for us, and we've learned a lot from it. Thank you all for the support, and hopefully we'll see you all at a show sometime this summer
