FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEContact: press@unfinishedthought.comUNFINISHED THOUGHT:Highly Anticipated Second Album Released To The Public. Confusion And Worry Prevail. Dark rock innovators Unfinished Thought bring you a story... ...of never ending sleep ...of forever deepening concern ...of unavoidable consequence A story that cleverly shifts back and forth through time revealing the tragic details that have led to the mysterious disappearance of an unforgettable individual. The Timid is a lonely recluse unsuccessfully managing his own mental instability and deepening depression. When a series of seemingly random events bring him face to face with the chance to take his own life or start anew in a memoryless world, he must decide his final destination before fate chooses for him. Based On Actual Events chronicles the last days of The Timid's life as he battles unimaginable coincidence, cruel circumstance, accidental insanity, hopeless insignificance and the frightening vulnerability that is naturally created by the presence of human thought. Following up on the unexpected independent success of their 2002 debut album, Becoming Aware, dark rock perfectionists Unfinished Thought have returned with an album that solidifies the duo's status as one of independent music's most original and creative forces. Based On Actual Events is a genre defying collection of songs that spotlights the unparalleled precision and forceful elegance that defines Unfinished Thought's decidedly unique sound. Stacey Nelson's magnetic voice demands unconditional emotional attention while at the same time stealing hope from any thought that once resembled a happy ending. From a soft whisper to a soaring three part harmony, her vocal talents glide each song to completely perfect dimensions. Unfinished Thought's unconventional song structure lends itself well to the compelling lyrics that carefully decorate each track on this dark, schizophrenic album. At times seeming to barely be able to manage their own perceived randomness and at other times in complete understanding of the premeditated confusion that created them, the lyrics fall delicately into a soundscape of threatening synths and razor sharp bass lines. These elements combine with crashing walls of distorted guitars and multiple layers of intricate rhythm to produce a sound that breathes freshness into the state of modern independent music. Based On Actual Events is a progressively precise turning point for the unconventional mind that can't quite come in from the rain. It's thoughtful. It's careful. It calculated, unique. It's about being lonely. It's about passing time. It's about the reasons you're still thinking through. It's a shade from every angle and it's all coming true.

"Unfinished Thought, the dynamic duo from Kalamazoo, MI that stunned listeners with the dark ambiance and painful beauty of last year's Becoming Aware have followed up the success of that release with Based On Actual Events - a CD even more mentally unstable and musically brilliant. As always, the dusky mystique of Joe Kiser's music provides the perfect tone for the luminosity of Stacey Nelson's vocals. Here's the twist: this time each song is not a separate entity, but chapters of an epic story set in the innermost depths of a mind not so abnormal, only more aware of itself than most. Believe me - you should check out Unfinished Thought."
-Sarah Byrne, Recoil Magazine
"Propelled between the nuance of delicate, angelically ethereal harmonies and compulsively aggressive guitar playing, the music Industrial-Goth-Rock duo Unfinished Thought creates on 'Based On Actual Events' is a complicated and layered environment. A difficult achievement for musicians with decades of experience and rarely achieved multiple times by the same band. Their powerful sound is built on intensely haunting vocals and genre defying riffs and beats. Arrangements shift through an umbra of full-on industrial noise to orchestrated Goth rock and back to a soft whimper or the musical equivalent of a banshee's wail. They may have struggled to find a sound they could solidify as their own, even though it seems to have flawlessly found them. Influenced by musicians the likes of Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails, Unfinished Thought have been compared to the likes of Evanescence, Kidneythieves and Italian industrial act Lacuna Coil. Note also, none of the bands UT's sound is compared to have been listed as influences by the band members. This disc is the next evolution of unbridled rock, with a hint of industrial flair and a pinch of Goth for intensity. 5 out of 5."
-Adam Tibbott, Tainted Imagez
"Unfinished Thought portrays what all music should strive for - excellent vocals, driving instrumentation and a sound that makes you NEED to listen. Unfinished Thought have a great edge. They have an interesting outlook and their music is way above par. Don't hesitate to check out this CD!"
-Yvonne Glasgow, Music Revue Magazine
"I think I've done it again. I've come across another shiny gem in the vast world of independent music. Dark Rock duo Unfinished Thought have just released their second album "Based On Actual Events", and it is nothing less than extraordinary. Vocalist and pianist Stacey Nelson and Producer Joe Kiser merge their talents together and create a compelling, layered sound. This album is very diverse. The opening track "Through Crowded Rooms" immediately grabs the listener with its fast-pace and honest lyrics. Another stand-out track is "Umbrella", an emotionally charged song with Stacey on the piano. The chilling piano wraps around Stacey's words "It's sad when the rain falls and it makes no sound, when it falls out of order, when you're not around." UT also shot a video for the song, which is available on DVD or on their website. Unfinished Thought do an excellent job of combining layered music with amazing vocals and lyrics. They seek to bring the listener a story of "never ending sleep, of forever deepening concern, and of unavoidable consequence." This is true, as "Based On Actual Events" takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride. Fans of Garbage, Kidneythieves, and Lacuna Coil should definitely take notice as I believe that this is definitely a band to watch."
-Sarah, Collected Sounds
"Unfinished Thought certainly aren't a band you can meet everyday because it's quite rare to find two people dedicating so much effort to the recording, release and promotion of an album nowadays without losing a single ounce of inspiration. I've always been convinced that when you don't have much time to experiment because of label deadlines or fear of the label dropping you, then it becomes hugely unlikely to survive and stand out. Add that every developed country produces thousands of rock CDs or vinyls every year, and then you'll get a picture of why there were great bands in the 70's and 80's, whereas the rest of the years onward allowed for just a few good bands, hardly any legends and very few unforgettable songs that ever entered the book of classics.
Yet there are some trying to achieve the status of "Wonder CD of the Year" and this duo's come back seems to be one of these, and luckily most of all - a memorable record including a handful of compositions pleasant to be played again even in the far future. Just admit it, how many pieces from your CDography were listened to again this year? Not many indeed, and "Based on Actual Events", owing to manifold qualities present at the same time, definitely shan't get covered with dust like most of your collection, trust me!
Twelve tracks narrate a story about the mysterious disappearance of an unforgettable individual, 'The Timid', a recluse about to lose his mental soundness, pushed by an ever-growing depression; a real potential suicide, hoping to be reborn into a memoryless world giving the miserable bloke a second chance. Now, the possibilities are two: either [lyricist] Joe has telepathic powers, or he has lived through similar experiences in his own life like mine, however I feel this character quite autobiographical and that's another point in favor of him. Even if one may have slightly different interpretations while reading the lyrics, one sees that the chap's life doesn't end well as one would expect, and that reflects this two-piece's life vision: hopeless.
[A song by song review:]
The kick-off is given by "Through Crowded Rooms" mixing dark-wave, metal, industrial and electronica with Stacey Nelson's voice, now sweet and magnetic, on other occasions hovering and quivering. To be cited - the short funeral keyboards break, but keep in mind that during all the 53 minutes of this album this instrument is never a frill and on the contrary plays an important role in the sound economy, different from most gothic bands.
Based on a lively programming, "Sidewalks" lulls you with Stacey's swinging vocals, pulsating bass lines, making me think of a hybrid between Evanescence and Lacuna Coil, among the others.
In the elaborate "By the Time You Read This" Stacey's first vocals are close to Skunk Anansie's, but when the programming starts they change and are layered on male choir vocals in the background; the languidness of rock guitars is fused with the coldness of the programmed drums, the crawling and obsessive keys melt with penetrating riffs, while the vocals sound very dramatic in the refrain, one of my favorites.
Another highlight of the CD is "Umbrella", the most Dead Can Dance-oriented; this is a masterpiece, nevertheless wholly different from the previous song, where Stacey's voice is angelic and melancholic at the same time, accompanied by only a piano and a light programmed percussion (or maybe just a synth). I wouldn't be surprised at all if the video matched with this song would make a go of it, as U.T. proved they pay attention to every single aspect of their project, and that's a rewarding policy 90 times out of 100. The clip was professionally shot with a steadycam in particularly suggestive places, especially a big wood during fall. Easy and effective as shown in the DVD making-of.
The follower's called "Probabilities" and borrows a helluva hard beat dear to Nine Inch Nails, while the vocals are as shining as the bass notes; danceable but not commercial tout-court; Stacey used dubbed vocals here, and reminds me of Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia's. The programming proves to be heavy, while the 6-string sounds are strongly modern metal.
"Evening" touches quality pop-rock shores, with the black-haired goddess seducing me with her catty hooks; the chorus and the riffing are real mind-penetrating, so that I feel like a mouse in the clutches of the unmerciful Pied Piperess from Kalamazoo. The recording and the mixing would be excellent even for an unselfreleased act, though I'm sure they're not enough to justify the siren's effect such a song has on me.
Hypnotic is the drumming at the beginning of "Don't Stop Raindrop", using very 80's keyboard sounds, and alternating it with electrically nervous structures; multi-instrumentalist and co-leader Joe Kiser turns this song from an ordinary one to an efficient one thanks to some Goblin-like keyboard notes suitable for an auteur horror flick.
Simply wonderful the words of "The Order of Detail", the Gathering-influenced vocals and the piano notes bringing to a climax, making me think of the lightest Evanescence, and then to a dynamical break; before the initial strophe is re-used, the song remains close to gothic metal coordinates.
Unfinished Thought own several potential singles to choose from this record, and "Perfectly Still" belongs to that group. If you liked "Mandylion", you'll drool for this song, although I must admit there's more, like the odd parts with overdubbed vocal parts (all female like in all the CD), far from the Dutch act's standards.
An arpeggio opens "The Timid", the longest track of all, slightly employing Pink Floydian guitars and mellow keyboards; it seems to me this is the only track with a human drummer, but the point is that this is the most complete composition of U.T., representing almost all their shades; it's a soft song, yet not banal at all. I'm convinced that even though you're knocking on 20, you'll dig this kind of songwriting, notwithstanding it's straightforward and not aggressive.
Fervent is the right adjective to qualify "Silhouette", gifted with its winding drum 'n' bass moves a là NIN, or trip hop a là Portishead; once again Stacey doesn't miss a nanosecond in her beats, and besides the song's effect is doubled if you listen to that with a serious subwoofer.
Thrills and hearts broken are the results for the closer, "Coming Back"; you can really feel the sadness of the piano and the passionate hopelessness sung here, and sustained by deep lyrics; there're also some violin lines - probably synthesized - to reinforce this atmosphere before a ringing phone, the name Lucy repeated with obsession and another unidentified noise. A very disturbing end for a masterpiece of decay started not happily, and like "Umbrella", based on the piano and Stacey's voice but without the programming.
Joe and Stacey have passed every test: they're all-round pro musicians; not only performers, but also remarkable songwriters in an utterly creative period of their careers. It really is true that after Evanescence's success, who even played some U.T. songs live, that this genre has become extremely profitable in Uncle Sam's land. But still their artistic side is decidedly larger than the business one as yet.
Listening to the duo is an experience that will make your heart bleed, freeze and finally wither and implode into itself. What makes my day is their perfectionism, absolutely needed for a music like this, in which moral decadence and despondency are the very goals.
When you love music, people notice that. Now I can only hope to see them live in Italy as a 6-piece due to the obvious recourse to session musicians. Buy or feel responsible if mainstream keeps on force-feeding you with soulless mersh."

Illuminata is a female "secret service" agent (of non-American nationality) who has been hired (by an unknown employer) to track down The Timid who has faked his own death in order to start a brand new life. "Illuminata" fits in to the Exits album concept about half way through the timeline. As the story goes, The Timid has faked his own death (ala Richey Edwards) by leaving his abandoned car on a London bridge commonly used to commit suicide (there will be an opening song about this bridge on the Exits album).
The Timid left behind his friends and family as well as his troubled past of mental illness and uncontrollable depression. Of course he is still struggling with his mental illness, but he is generally free of the day to day mundane problems he used to face. It was this "ordinary world" that he was trying to escape during the storyline for "Based On Actual Events". This album builds directly on the story outlined during "Based On Actual Events." Essentially, BOAE and Exits make one double album, albeit very different SOUNDING albums...
He finds that his "new life" is not free of problems however - he is now battling the urge to contact important people from his past to let him know that he is in fact alive and well. His friends back home refuse to believe he is dead and his "death" is still under suspicion as obviously no body was ever found. Little does everyone know however (sometimes not even The Timid) that he has also escaped his previous life with an unbelievably dangerous secret - "the meaning of life". It is this meaning that The Timid wants to unleash on the world (when he can figure out the final pieces of the puzzle for himself) and it is this same meaning that Illuminata, the agent sent to track him down, is trying so desperately to recover. The "meaning of life" cannot be known to the rest of the world and it is her job to prevent just that from happening - one way or another. There is a price on The Timid's head and Illuminata intends to collect that bounty.
When trying to interpret this song, think of Stacey playing the lead role - "Illuminata". In the beginning of the song she is standing (looking very commanding) at a futuristic podium addressing a large hall (dark, dusty, Star Wars-y hall) of hired guns. ("Gentlemen lay down your fears, we are taking volunteers") - volunteers to hunt down The Timid. She is adamant that the men accept her offer ("If you say no, there's no telling what I'd do to you"). Think of her wearing something out of Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" video. Illuminata has great respect for The Timid and his ability to disappear and walk around undetected ("Evidence suggests our subject fled his life to find affection, must admit I quite admire....") She herself is not positive The Timid hasn't committed suicide, but in her heart she knows he is alive. The chorus of this song is Illuminata speaking of the futility of the chase and how at the end of it all, no matter the outcome, "the world will still be spinning". The irony is that if The Timid is in fact successful with his plans, the world will not spin on - a "revolution will be spun". The second verse finds Illuminata questioning The Timid's motives - finding perfect love and sharing the meaning of life with the world. She is a bitter woman and does not believe in such things ("Gentlemen would you agree, perfect love is fantasy"). Think of the very end of the song as shifting perspectives away from Illuminata and toward The Timid. The Timid is speaking now - "It May Already Be Too Late To Spin A Revolution, To Shade The Escape. (His escape) Silent While I Advance, Silent In My Arrival, Silent While I Walk Away". He is taunting Illuminata to come find him at the end of this song.

Following up on the unexpected independent success of their 2002 debut album, Becoming Aware, dark rock innovators Unfinished Thought have returned with an album that solidifies the duo's status as one of independent music's most original and creative forces. Their brand new release, Based On Actual Events, is a genre defying collection of songs that spotlights the unparalleled precision and forceful elegance that defines Unfinished Thought's decidedly unique sound. "Uniqueness has been a blessing and a curse for us" explains producer/multi-instrumentalist Joe Kiser. "Every band wants to say that they sound like nothing you've ever heard before. Obviously comparisons can be drawn between any two given sounds, but our music tends to drift freely between multiple genres. I think we have more of the 'nothing you've ever heard before' element than most bands that have surfaced in the past several years."
Combining the more abrasive elements of dark wave, industrial, electronica, metal and goth with the more melodic components of etherealism, ambient, dark rock, and even pop music, Unfinished Thought have crafted a sound all their own. "Our audience tends to find their way to us through the darker channels like goth and industrial, but quickly realize that we have a lot more going on than most bands in those genres" continues Kiser.
The duo that would eventually become Unfinished Thought began their creative partnership in 2001 when Joe Kiser, a Midwestern college student studying music production met Stacey Nelson, a young singer/songwriter with an extensive choir background. Joe had been producing instrumental tracks while auditioning female vocalists for several months prior to meeting Stacey. He explains, "I had a vision of what I wanted Unfinished Thought to sound like. I wanted to find a girl that could sing gorgeous multi-part harmonies over some really heavy material. I can't sing or write vocal parts however, so I needed the girl to be able to not only provide perfect pitch, but also do the actual writing of the melodies and harmonies. Lots of girls that I auditioned could sing, but not one had the amazing writing capabilities that Stacey had. She could write a melody within seconds and her voice was absolutely beautiful; so fragile and haunting." The two began writing immediately, drawing off of each others' diverse musical influences such as Jeff Buckley, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Nine Inch Nails to produce their signature sound.
The recording of Becoming Aware would consume the duo's lives for the next year and a half. The writing process remained basically unchanged throughout the recording of the album with Joe writing and recording the instrumentation and Stacey flawlessly bringing her signature vocal style into the mix. Both contributed lyrics, but always retained a common theme, conceptually focusing the album on issues such as mental illness, obsession, and addiction. Musically, the songs were becoming more and more diverse. Joe explains, "The songs weren't coming out as hard and heavy as I had originally intended, but that's what I think really set us apart. We were confused in the early stages about whether we wanted to be a hard industrial band or do something softer like Tori Amos. In the end, we just recorded what felt natural. I think that's the definition of a musical style. You take all of your musical influences; songs that make you cry, songs that give you chills, and just remember all of that when you sit down to write. Whatever comes out is your own personal interpretation of what music should sound like. We can go from a hard, driving song to a soft piano ballad and still retain a sense of style. There's always an undercurrent of darkness in our songs, whether it's lyrically or musically."
Released in 2002, Becoming Aware drew immediate critical acclaim and soon drove thousands to the band's website. Driven by delicate vocal harmonies and compulsive electric guitar playing, the album introduced audiences to Unfinished Thought's signature layered atmosphere of sound. It was a very schizophrenic album with arrangements ranging from full on industrial to orchestrated dark rock. The album delivered deceptively beautiful musical textures while at the same time exploring very dark lyrical themes that immediately struck a chord with fans. Vocalist Stacey Nelson describes the initial reaction from critics and fans, "We were unprepared for the reaction we received when the first record came out. We were completely unknown and had the unadmirable task of promoting a very unconventional album. We didn't know who our audience would turn out to be. Luckily, we had a little help along the way." Help came in the form of 2003's break through sensation Evanescence (Wind Up Records). Evanescence received a copy of Unfinished Thought's first CD and began playing it in between sets on their world tour. Stacey continues, "Things just exploded when Evanescence began playing tracks from Becoming Aware. Suddenly our website was bombarded with people that had been to Evanescence shows and had heard our music. We caught on to the idea of marketing ourselves with comparisons to bands like Evanescence, Kidneythieves, Lacuna Coil, Switchblade Symphony, and Garbage." The promotional efforts paid off as fans and critics alike began to rally behind the duo. Overwhelmingly positive album reviews and extremely supportive fans pushed Unfinished Thought further into the forefront of the public eye as sales of Becoming Aware continued to double month after month. By mid 2003 a cult following was thriving on the duo's website and fans were clamoring for the group to begin playing live shows.
Joe explains, "We were very much unprepared for live shows. Unfinished Thought began as a studio collaboration and we never had any intention of playing live. All of the sudden we realized that we had a legitimate chance at making a good name for ourselves and we knew the next step would be to go out and recruit live band members." Recruiting took the better part of 2003 as Joe and Stacey auditioned musician after musician. In between auditions the duo also found time to do a myriad of radio appearances, newspaper interviews, and film their first video. As 2003 came to an end, Unfinished Thought found themselves as the unlikely stars of an independent music success story.
Production on the duo's second CD was also in full swing during 2003. Joe explains, "When we saw the reaction to the first CD, we immediately began work on the second. We moved into a more secluded studio and got right to work without interruption. Writing for the second album was far more intense than the first and we were able to complete the recording in half the time as a result of our newfound direction."
Released in April of 2004, Based On Actual Events shows an acoustic maturity and unexpected evolution for Unfinished Thought. With concise, intelligent song arrangements and a concept album feel, the new release from Unfinished Thought highlights the strengths of the previous album while introducing the depths to which this duo is unafraid to explore. A brand new DVD was also released in April 2004 containing a unique and stirring video for the new song "Umbrella".
With two albums on record and a steadily growing fan base to support them, Unfinished Thought now turn their focus to the live stage. Crowd reaction has been amazing since UT's live debut in November 2004, proving that the Unfinished Thought signature sound is readily translated to the live stage. Currently all six UT live band members are now anxiously awaiting what lies ahead as shows are planned for 2005. As the buzz surrounding Unfinished Thought continues to grow daily, Joe and Stacey are proud to look back on their past successes and look forward to propelling themselves further into the forefront of modern independent music.
