After months and months of dabbling and a few interested labels we have decided to release this album DIY style. DIY in the way we perceive it. On our terms, with the quality of production WE decide. The album will be released jan 31. 6 panel digipak, full colour + booklet insert. The artwork has been taken up a whole new level. We firmly believe in the dedication of our fans. You can already preorder our album on our merchstore @ http://herfstmerchstore.bigcartel.com. Those order will be shipped as son as they are in. This also helps us to finance the pressing. Thanks and hopefully we'll be able to bring our material to a stage near you soon. Bookers, distributors and editors get in touch. info@herfst.org

SHIT and good news: We have been waiting so long to make any updates since a very high profile label had selected us among a few other bands. Unfortunately today they have decided to let us go and opt for another band out of their selection. This week we will inform you about when & how the album will definitively be released. Pointless to say we're very disappointed by this decision. A small positive note: we just got a REALLY positive review from the prestigious Metal Rules guys:

H E R F S T Necrotica October 2009 Released: 2009, Self Rating: 4.0/5 Reviewer: Hanntu H E R F S T is a melodic black/death metal band from Belgium, a country not too widely known for its metal exports. So it’s with justifiable curiosity and not a little trepidation that I take a quick listen to NECROTICA, the band’s debut album. Think a slightly less overblown later-era Dimmu Borgir – by which I mean scoop out all the unnecessary symphonic bits – crossed with Carcass and Nile, and I think you’ll have a pretty good idea of what 85% of H E R F S T is about. Musically, the harshness of Dietwin’s vocals bring to mind Jeff Walker and even Karl Sanders at times; certain riff sections definitely do echo HEARTWORK and the melodic death era of Carcass - and you can also hear quite a bit of Amon Amarth in there; and while the Dimmu and Nile influence may not be there for all to see or hear, they are present especially in riff ideas and the ear and instinct for a disagreeably good and gnarled melody. Slicing away a lot of Dimmu’s fat around the keyboard section was a great move, this Belgian band is set to go! There are also great slow sections scattered around the album, bringing to mind some really good gothic-doom bands like Forest of Shadows, with occasional clean singing, harmonised twin guitars and driving double bass. I’m of course thinking of the closing song on NECROTICA, ‘Serpent Tongue’, but this is not an isolated example. The tiniest criticism I’d make is that some of the songs do drag on a little (the entire album is 47 minutes for 8 songs), but that’s really only because I was looking for something to complain about. The overall production is a little flat and underwhelming, and I did have to turn up the volume to really get my teeth into the CD, but that’s also a minor criticism. There’s really nothing to dislike about a band that is sonically influenced by Dimmu Borgir, Kalmah, Nile and Carcass, and lyrically influenced by gothic horror literature and HP Lovecraft, especially not when it’s as well done as NECROTICA is. It would be a good album regardless of when it was put out, but the achievement is even more outstanding if you consider that this is the band’s debut.

Current mood:  rockin
First of all welcome to our freshly exhumed myspace lair! Thanks to Bernhard Spitzer (spitzer_berni@hotmail.com) for the skillful programming job!

Secondly, we have finally started receiving reviews of our latest record Necro†ica. We're more than happy with these words of praise. Arrogant pricks as we are -according to some- you can read them below. This section will of corpse be regularly updated.

Metalteam UK: "horror is to metal what chips are to fish; sure you can have one without the other but horror provides an endless source of inspiration for gore-worshipping growlers, thrashers of the dead and witchfinders of doom alike. The idea of Lovecraftian metal conjures up thoughts of the mysteriously macabre and for the music to work it really has to project that vibe and atmosphere which was done brilliantly with Sceptic Flesh’s album Communion. That would be quite an obvious comparison to make as this does project a similar vibe and although not quite as rich in sound, I must point out that it’s very early days for Herfst yet.
This album does come steeped in atmosphere and with that element of mysteriousness. ‘House Of Twilight’ has an underlying creepiness and intense air of foreboding which fattens out the core rhythm section. There is a strong melodic death metal backbone throughout this album that should appeal to fans of Hypocrisy and Dark Tranquillity; ‘And Interest In Distress’ comes at you with a crushing wall of sound that kind of stomps along angrily before the dirge-like guitars offer a sudden portent of doom. The album feels a bit like a listening to a story, going through its various twists and turns and would surely be one filled with death and sorrow.
I really like ‘She Wore Death As A Shroud’ with its dark, morose chorus that contrasts the swaggering riffs of the verse which all kind of sweeps up into a horror-soaked ambience. This shows off some melodious guitar work and a romantic ending. ‘Vulture Feast’ is another track that is highly melodious and I can’t help but get drawn in to its majestic chorus. The clean vocals are a lovely feature; really rich and grandiloquent and offer respite from the deep deathly growls. The vocalist only joined the band shortly before the recording so I guess the band made the right decision! There is a feeling of melancholy that remains constant right up until the finale of ‘Serpent Tongue’ which has a wild and rather devastating array of guitars, drums and bass yet is tinged with sorrow.
The whole album flows well and Herfst have created a well-crafted debut that is a must for fans of atmospheric death metal. The album release was put back after talk of a record deal, which appears to have fallen through but with the quality of this album I can see them getting signed in no time!

fyu.be: "After a well received demo, which secured them many underground fans, a debut album was only a matter of time.

That being said, some things seem to have been changed.
For a start, the former vocalist has been replaced by new singer Void. Whereas the old vocals tended to sound shrill and monotonous, you will be glad to hear that they are now an atmospheric amalgam of grunts, clean parts and bone-shivering melancholia.

The new vocal style seems to fit in with the horror concept that the band has embedded in the music. It's pretty clear that there is an analogy with Herfst and Lovecraft inspired bands such as The Vision Bleak and Septic Flesh, mainly due to the atmospheric similarities.

That aside, there are far more references than the horror sub-genre alone. It's mainly the guitar and drum work that opens up new horizons for the album. The melodic parts that we recognise from the Gothenburg scene are drenched in a brutal coating and at times the music is reminiscent of bands like Hypocrisy and At the Gates. However these moments are brief, as the setting can change from aggressive to doomy in no time at all. Each song has its own depths and influences while maintaining an original sound. This makes it rather difficult to categorize "Necrotica" under one specific genre, as with each spin you'll discover something new.

Technically, things have vastly improved . The production is clear and suits the music perfectly. The only minor flaw that I could find is the rather silent snare drum. Luckily this is quickly forgotten when you encounter the playful, warm and at times diabolical solos provided by lead guitarist Bram. Throw in epic drums, sheer vocal melancholy and you've got yourself an eerie opus that our small country won't easily forget.

On a less positive note: the bloody record still isn't released. We will decide within two weeks wether we'll release it ourselves or not... Blame the music industry!

Good news is that we're planning a small tour with our fellows Thurisaz in November.

official band statement:

"A few weeks ago Xavier decided he no longer wanted to be a part of our
band. Of corpse it wasn't exactly the best news, but there were
indications that he wasn't happy in the band anymore. Especially the
live performing part was not his cup of menstrual blood. I must admit
we panicked for a while, since we think Xavier was and is one of the
most talented vocalists/lyricists out there. We however need a vocalist
that is motivated to destroy as many stages as possible.

Good news though. After our ad a very select group of interested
candidates contacted us. One dude immediately caught our attention. We
are happy to say that we have finally found a fucking well worty
replacement!

His name is Dietwin Elbers, you might know him from Inclination and
some more obscure projects. He -sadly- hails from Antwerp yet
compensates for this with his fantastic vocal work. The fact that he
can almost outperv Bram worked in his advantage. He has a broad vocal
range (from Hypochrisy to Cradle of Filth, from Amon Amarth to
singer-songwriter) which we will gleefully exploit.

I think we can safely say we are a full nekromantic deathcult now, and are ready as ever to conquer Ertvelde and beyond."

some words from Xavier aka Nihil:

"Herfst and I joined forces to make a great album. And we did.
Unfortunately, I am just not that interested in performing live. Of
course, this lack of enthusiasm shows on stage. As I will be short on
time this year anyway and have a few other musical projects running, I
have decided to leave the band. I've seen and heard some examples of
what my replacement has to offer and I'm certain he will be an asset to
the band.

Since we all parted as friends, there may still be some Herfst-Nihil collaborations... should circumstances allow it.

Depending on Dietwin's schedule, I will normally still do the Mortsel show.

This time... in full health and with an appetite for destruction"

and here's a statement from our newbie hehe:

"I am very excited that I was chosen to sing and play with H e r f s t.
I can clearly imagine the future and potential of any band with
musicians like these, and I am nothing but proud that henceforth, I
will share in this future.

Times have been harsh. "Easy" is not a word to describe the long road
that all bands must travel. And roads have been walked, alone and
together, each in his own quest. Now these roads collide, and it is
this collision which will turn out to be a collaboration of mutual
interest and desire.

Xaviers voice is quite special. It will be hard to fill these shoes, as
his voice is powerful, stable and eerily low, whereas my voice has the
tendency to 'fly' trough it all. But there is not a doubt in my mind
that H e r f s t and I will benefit from this decision, and I thank
Bram and the whole crew and each and every follower for giving me this
opportunity

Hope to entertain y'all soon!
"
