dawww... here is a nifty article from ubik on the stranger forums:

http://forums.thestranger.com/showthread.php?t=22970

If I'm backing all of my posts by calling attention to bands that never get mentioned in The Stranger, I'm not sure how much this next band qualifies (I don't think they get much attention here, but they're regular mentions at Three Imaginary Girls)... but I don't care. I absolutely love the Tea Cozies.

There's something a little deceptive? tricky? there's something a little Loki about this band, and I think some people might miss it on the first pass. It's important to notice that their caption on MySpace is "We don't want your friendship. Only your blood," which is more than a little confrontational, no? And when you think about it, I think the band name was chosen, specifically picked, to be uncomfortable: never in my life did I imagine myself telling friends "I'm really into the Tea Cozies." (every time I say that, I realize what an incredibly unmanly statement it is) It's even more confounding when the listed genres are Indie, Garage, and Pop... and that I could easily describe them in the buzz words that usually make me want to not listen to a band: that "pop sensibilities" phrase that gets used on half of the Stranger's Up & Coming listing is applicable here.

But they're just so good... The first day I had their self titled disc, I listened to it, and it was okay. The second day, I listened to it twice. The third day this CD was in my possession, I listened to it all day. It's a five song EP, and I just couldn't turn it off; when I went out that evening to meet up with friends, I copied it over to my mp3 player so I could keep listening to it after I left the house. Very few albums have ever had that effect on me. (If you want a copy, they're sort of unofficial label-mates of ours: their discs are available at CDBaby). I've had that album for over a year, and it's always at the ready; it's particularly tasty walking home after a long night.

I've come this far and haven't even attempted to cover how they actually sound... which still stumps me. Their listed influences include not just Pixies and Talking Heads, but also Can, and I think that has a bit to do with the tricky hold they have on me: there are a number of female-fronted indie pop bands in the world, but there's more going on the Tea Cozies than pretty vocal harmonies and bright guitars... there's an incredible amount of atmosphere, and a lot of texture. The songs never shy away from getting complicated, but aren't afraid to be simple, if simple is required. There's reverb on hand, but the atmosphere isn't born of the band being "reverb drenched" (they're not), echoes are common, and so are jumps from clean to crunchy distortion or fuzz.

The best way I can describe it is that every aspect of the band is much deeper than most people will get from one listen. Lyrically (literally?) I still haven't quite wrapped my head around everything these songs have to say: even if I do "get" every lyric, I'm not sure how it fits with the song titles, or how the whole stew sets as a whole... to this day, I think about these songs every time I hear them. The arrangements still move in a way that feels surprising, the drums are always more clever, the two guitars have incredibly distinct personalities. And, of course, there is the inclusion of synths, cowbell, and barroom piano that are absolutely not studio magic-- they're part of the live shows.

I'm not a shameless fanboy for many bands, but this one's a gold star. So much so that I have to force myself to stop rambling, or I might just write another 10 pages...

"Seattle garage-pop pretties Tea Cozies bop to a darkly sexy, sauced-up Britpop that's marinated in such transcendent '90s girl rock as the Breeders and Elastica. Playful, catchy and smart as a whip, the three girls and one (lucky) guy prove Seattle's scene to be at least one indie band away from completely dead."

Jay Horton, WILLAMETTE WEEK Portland, OR

"Naming themselves after a British tea insulator, Tea Cozies play frantic guitar-centric pop that reminds me of what Deerhoof would sound like if they popped a chill pill and started hanging out with the Rondelles. Hailing from Seattle, Tea Cozies transform the gray days of their city into a hologram of sunshine-soaked, jangly art-rock with sweet-as-a-lollipop girl-on-girl vocal harmonies. While their fingers are sticky from borrowing influence from Britpop and '60s-era American underground icons, Tea Cozies successfully transform their inspirations into arrangements that sound completely fresh and new. Post-post-modernism, anyone?"

Em Brownlowe, THE PORTLAND MERCURY Portland, OR

"The precocious child of Brit and indie pop, Seattle's Tea Cozies sound as great as any of their influences on their debut EP. Underneath the fiery emotions expressed is an undeniably accessible charm. Playful, passionate and defiant, the band's catchy songs are intelligent, strong and well-crafted."

Tom Murphy, Critics' Picks for 2007, THE WESTWORD Denver, CO

"While the ever-present deluge of indie-pop bands in this town can sometimes make it difficult to sort out the merely listenable from the truly exceptional, the Tea Cozies fall squarely in the latter category. Steeped in the transcendent pop of Elastica and the Breeders, stirred in with the soulful swoon of PJ Harvey or Mazzy Star, and topped with the cockeyed, ramshackle energy of early Talking Heads, these just-under-the-radar charmers are a band to watch in the new year."

Bill Bullock, THE STRANGER Seattle, WA

"(Named one of the) Best Northwest Bands to look out for in 2007."

Three Imaginary Girls, SEATTLE WEEKLY Seattle, WA

"This EP is... really good."

Dj Troy Nelson, 90.3 KEXP Seattle, WA

MAY 10th- East End (Portland)
Oh Portland. Oh geez. Had to take a few days off before posting this one because we've LOST OUR MINDS and are super tired. We hit up a thrift store again to kill some time, and purchased Billy Idol's greatest hits, purely because we'd been dying to hear "eyes w/o a face" all week. and when I say "we" I probably just mean" I", since Jeff promptly ejected the cd and called it crap. For the first time in the history of ever, we found the venue in Portland w/o getting lost! (only to get lost later after we had dropped off our bags elsewhere) East End is damn cool and hip like New York. I've never been to New York though, so really I'm just guesstimating on this one. Yes. First up were the Little Penguins, who really you must check out if you haven't already. Their songs have been stuck in the collective cozie brain all week (especially a new one called "Waiting for the Sign")… them boys are catchy and talented as hell. Plus you can close your eyes and pretend you're on a beach when you listen to them since their guitars/harmonies create a delicious sunny afternoon with just a slight hint of breeze...whaa?? Maybe that is why we have been drinking so many margaritas on this trip. There were definitely a fair amount of people meandering around which was quite the opposite of the night previous and the gods were pleased.

Cozies were up next and the entire place was rocking, we were tight as all get out… and in the words of some gushing Penguins "that may have been the best Tea Cozies show ever!" The crowd was yelling for an encore, but we were only the second band so they got none of that. Minmae played next, but acoustically and sans two members, so it felt a bit awkward after we made everyone's ear drums bleed. The singer's scarf kept nearly getting caught in his strings and I was obsessed with watching that near catastrophe. London and the Look were last and really pure insanity is the best way to describe that part. Their singer, Lindsey was everywhere all at once, falling to the floor and kicking her heels in the air and the place was dancing all over again. Then we drank and decided perhaps we should go visit one of Portland's finest strip clubs, which would've been quite humorous, but they were all closed. Boo. We ended the night at our bud Megan's house watching Jeff dance around to an extremely skippy Madonna CD. It wasn't even close enough to normality to be a remix version, but nothing would stop his crazy dancing legs that night. He eventually tuckered himself out though and crashed face first on the floor. poor little pup.

 May 11th- Le Voyeur (Olympia)
We thought it unwise to drive ourselves/gear anywhere the night before and were thus forced to bus it around Portland. It was time for eating and we were stuck in downtown Portland, where we can never seem to find tolerable foods. The last time we came to Portland we walked into this weirdo chinese buffet off of Jeff's instincts, and his food picking instincts were never trusted again. Needless to say we weren't eating there. We wandered through the Satuday (Sunday?) Market for a bit and found this weird place called Hubers or something. It looked like The Shining in there. seriously super creepy. all the waiters had on white button down shirts with little black ties, and the ceiling was stained glass! At any second Jack Nicolson was bound to come strolling in on the hunt for scotch. We walked back across the Burnside Bridge (lovely views!) and finally headed to Olympia. Le Voyeur is a rad little vegaby diy cafe thing with a graffitted as crap room in the back where people host shows. There were lots of dinosaur paintings and drawings around which made us proud. Also, the food was exquisite! There's no sound person, you just plug in and hope for the best…. There weren't many folks inside, so both bands figured we'll just amuse ourselves and just rock out like woah.

The Penguins started off their set, spread out across the room standing on sofas and the like. The sound wasn't half bad at all. In a stroke of genius they launched into a cover of the Velvet Underground's "What Goes On." Suddenly people were streaming in from the bar out of nowhere and started shaking their hips all over each other. Where did they come from? We don't know. Maybe Olympians can teleport like Captain Kirk. Maybe they can't. We were just glad to see them rocking their butts off. Oh crap. How were we to follow such an energetic set? Well kiddle diddles, we don't really know how it happened..but that night Tea Cozies reached back to our punk rock roots and beat the crap out of Olympia. Actually they were beating the crap out of each other, and us. Literally. People were moshing and falling all over the place, fists pumping in every direction, Will Penguin was lifted like a jesus baby and crowd surfed in that tiny room, simultaneously nearly broke the stage lights and Jeff's unassuming neck. During Tranciting, Jessi told the audience to freestyle rap during the stomp-clap breakdown which they promised to do. They all pansied out thought when the crucial moment came, so she was forced freestyle Shoop until the song kicked back in.  Who knew Salt-n-Peppa were such a hit in Oly?

We lost a micstand to the frenzied mob so Brady and Jessi had to share for our last few songs. The people yelled for an encore which we obliged on the condition that they danced. Dance they did, as we played Elastica's "Waking Up". Afterwards we all passed out in a sweaty sweaty graffitied mess. Apparently, Olympia can bring it. London and the Look continued this night of marble losing rock through an insane set triggering yet another moshdancefestival and ended it all with a giant dogpile. I'm not from Olympia or anything, but that may have been the most ridiculous and rockin show Le Voyeur has ever seen. It was by far the most fun we've had in awhile. Dear Olympia, thank you for being so crazy bitchin, you are glorious!! We ended the night with a two band back rub train, the way all tours should end. Body massage! All us Cozies are even more in love with each other than when we left, and adore the Penguins more than ever! Really we really couldn't have asked for a better inaugural Tea Cozies tour. Pleased as a punch from Olympia.

MAY 7TH KIMO'S (S.F)
i broke a string in san jose and this little metal backing piece fell out of the back of my guitar and was lost to johnny v's. once we hit sf, we went up and down van ness street looking for this mystery guitar repair store that the guy from haight ashbury music told me about. this little shop was called "real guitars" and we finally did find it nestled in between some row houses, the hunt was worth it. i bought two of the little metal string holder things for $1. score! (later that evening i found the missing one had been in my guitar case all along. balls!) we went down to the piers and looked at all the touristy stuff, alcatraz t-shirts, golden gate place mats, full house postcards, etc. mosied over to pier 39 and looked at the seal lions. brady recorded them for later use. had some fish stand food and bought some fresh cherries and stuff so we don't get scurvy. i got into a yelling match with a mean street heckler which ended with me saying "get a new schtick, dick." that shut him up but good.

trailed a trolly back up the hill and saw that sf still has a swenson's !! our swenson's in ft collins had a mini train and was like the coolest place ever to hang out after elementary school but it closed some years ago. we would have gone if we didn't have a show to play.

kimo's was really cool. our friends erin and ryan and erin's mom came over from oakland which was super fun. a local sf band called the new day breaker opened the show with some very loud and rockin stuff. then us. then the penguins. there was no cover for the show so after the fees involved we earned a whopping $2 to split between the two bands. the sound guy told will that he didn't want to be offensive by even offering us each $1, will said "no, we'll take the dollar" ... but the sound guy ended up forgetting to give it to us. i don't what else to say except that we love san francisco.

MAY 8TH BOILER ROOM (Eureka)
the drive to eureka was hands down the most beautiful so far. we listened to the beatles anthology and got mad kicks out of the demo take of "no reply" where john forgets the lyrics and keeps laughing and repeating YOUR FACE over and over again. then we hit this town called willits. what you talking bout, willits. we stopped for gas and saw this girl riding a horse down the main strech of road. she did a funky lean back on the horse trick when she saw us looking. there was also a really cute dog at the gas station. willits was pretty alright.

due to a hot tip from charlie at kimo's, we took this scenic route called "the avenue of giants" which took us deep into a redwood forest. we listened to the jurassic park soundtrack and it was scary. then we stopped and had a photo shoot.

when we first arrived in eureka we checked out the mervyns right next to the venue. kelly bought some items to replace the clothes that got left in the safeway parking lot, jeff looked for some velcro shoes to no avail. we found out that the eureka police department is housed in the mall. later on we ate some more mexican food in downtown eureka for dinner while jeff crashed out for a bit after the long drive. we brought him back chicken tacos!

the boiler room was painted blue with flames on it. THERE WAS A STRIPPER POLE NEXT TO THE STAGE. they had a pretty awesome juke box which we spent our show money on later. a local band called "hey eleanor" played first. they were splendid... definitely one of our new favorites. their cd features a hand sewn cover. we love us some crafty music. will penguin cited a "belly" comparison and i think that is pretty accurate.

penguins played next and sounded even better than at kimos. will diva'd out a little and stood a few feet in front of the rest of the penguins... but as the rest of the band was a few feet higher up on stage it evened out. divas all.

we played last... our set was:

waking up
pretty pages
stir the cup
2:1
the south turned him sour
hot probs
loxo
tranciting
like a friend

dance party 2 came next. we loaded the juke with prince, madonna, depeche mode, bauhaus, the smiths, and all things dancey and good. oh did i mention, there was a stripper pole next to the stage? garrett penguin did some acrobatic spinning moves proving that he definitely has what it takes to make it in this business. there was a giant german shepherd dog named happy who cleaned up spilt beer by rolling around in it... there was a fist fight which ended with the sound guy getting fired, and later rehired. jeff and kelly helped clean tables in order to earn drinks... monica at the boiler room rules.

planet of the apes was on tv when we returned to the west bestern. some of us watched that and some went swimming until hotel security ended that endeavor.

MAY 9TH EUGENE
in the morning we all went out for omelettes, and us cozies stopped at clam beach to get out of the car and run a muck on the ocean shores. we wanted to take a band photo but didn't want to get sand into the camera, so we made a tripod out of our shoes. weeeeeee!!!!

then california thwarted us once again, as we were crawling along a mountain pass for hours and finally we went down a hill only to get a speeding ticket at the bottom of the hill about 100 yards from the oregon state line. we found out that the penguins got a ticket in the same exact stretch of road. dear california, why you gotta hate? love, tc.

we stopped to get ice cream in a random town and saw a senior center thrift store mega sale. kelly got bag of clothes for $2 and brady bought a polaroid camera for 50 cents.

i overheard a few elderly women talking about the golden compass and one of them mentioned that sam elliott was in it and they all giggled like crazy and practically swooned themselves silly. yikes.

----> we took the long road to eugene, and the penguins took the extra long scenic byway deluxe. by some minor miracle we had all arrived at diablo's on time. us cozies welcomed our tums back to the pacific northwest with some delicious sushi YEERS! diablo's is far classier than we had expected. for some reason we assumed we would be rockin another tiny bar like san jose, but no no no, diablo's is classy and full of mobster booths, lovely red lighting, pool tables, food and even buck hunt! my favorite deer hunting video game ever, downstairs is a dance club, with yes, ANOTHER STRIPPER POLE! we could hardly hold back our excitement and decided to put it to good use after the show.
the arithmatic danger club opened the show with some sassy dance music, and even had their very own choreographed dance troupe. which was pretty special i think. there's nothing like being completely out of your mind and watching 3 girls in devil themed costumes dancing in time the moment you walk in the door. sadly 90% of TADC had to leave directly after their set, as they were underage. oh the young! we were up next, and the craziness continued. there are tv's all around diablo's and during our set this crazy french film was playing called "dead alive." dead alive is apparently one of the most disgusting movies we'd never seen. so there we are racing through our set trying not to get distracted while this lady is getting the entirety of her insides pulled out through her mouth in one long bloody chunk, people's faces are melting off and some dude lost all the muscles and skin off his lower half and now just has bone legs. i still don't understand what was going on in that film. it was kinda like the continuous party scene from breakfast at tiffany's where everyone gets progressively drunker and then the chainsaw massacre guy comes in and starts ripping all their skins off while they cough up blood in one last ditch breath effort, oh but the show.. yes the show was lovely! and the dance troupe danced along to us as well and we were all having a good ol time, minus the gory french film. i got incredibly jealous later on when the penguins took the stage and a very soothing surf movie came on the screen. all these pleasant yellow warm colors and surfing and palm trees. it actually makes a lot of sense with our musics i suppose. haha we are your worst nightmare. IN FRENCH1!! the penguins beat the crap out of that place per usual and we all ran downstairs to dance party some more. us cozies really can't ever get enough dance parties. in fact we'd probably take another one right now, but instead we are driving to portland BALLS! We'd like to thank Diablo's and Jeff's cuz Dan for having us, Eugene was a blast! word to the wise....if you stick your feet in the ocean, you should try and wash them off asap or they will smell like kelly's, and kelly's feet smell like death right now. seriously i almost vomited. SEE YOU IN AN HOUR PORTLANDDD yes. hahah

berkeley

berkeley is a place for students and greenies, and old beat dudes. we landed in a parking garage with prices far better than anywhere in seattle and hunted around for food for a bit. we found a neat place called "the med." we ordered omlettes, salads, carrot juice and frothy almond milk. according to a sign behind the bar this place invented the latte. i invented shoe laces. i had a nice latte there and it was quite fun to watch all the professors and tweedies strolling past. the waiter was this old hippie dude and accidently brought misha's food out twice. part of the graduate was filmed at this place and ethan was sitting in the seat that dustin hoffman sat in. we took a picture.
afterward, we perused record shops (the famous amoeba records, i bought abba gold) and wandered around for a bit. i took a picture of some crazy street head shop to send to my brother. we ran into camp 2 on telegraph ave. those crazy dags!

then we drove to sacramento, the capitol city. on the way we spotted a herd of goats on the hillside, stopped for some photos7. by the way, the weather has been unbelievable this whole time. we're all pale little eskimos compared to these golden cali kids. my nose got sunburned by day 2.

in the sac we walked around the capitol building and saw a giant mariachi cinco de mayo rally happening. we think someone famous was there because there was a lot of security, but it may have just been arnold. they have lots of palm trees and citrus squirrels everywhere. saw an old squirrel we deemed skinny legs.

then there were margaritas and more tacos for camp expedition. we rolled over to the venue at about 8:30, blasting "gimme gimme gimme" by abba. old ironsides is a small bar with a small stage room attached. they had these video screens in the stage room and in the bar so people could watch the band's set without actually getting up. innovation and laziness. hmmm. i think the crocodile had something like that too. the sound guy, larry, was extremely meticulous and doesn't like it when you touch anything on stage. but he knows his shit, that larry.

we opened the show and when we started playing there were about 10 people in the stage room and i think 5 of them were in daguerreotypes. but ah well, we rocked it as best we could. some people must have been lazy watching the tv from the bar room though because we sold a fair amount of merch.

thee set:
2:1 (elastica)
pretty pages
tranciting
hot probs (new!)
loxo
the south turned him sour
stir the cup
like a friend (pulp)

dags played exceptionally well. they had this extended jam sesh at the end of bridge of daggers which kinda blew everyone's mind. those bastards.

after we stayed with johnny's friends eric and courtney. they are both chefs and live in the middle of this jungle in auburn... in the morning they made all 9 of us breakfast burritos. we love them. stopped in lodi and listened to some ccr. oh lord.

right now we are en route to san jose, passing hundreds of these windmill machines. i remember seeing those in wyoming when i was really little kid. then i didn't see them again for years so i had supposed that i imagined them. guess not.

well so long, see you in san jose!
jessi

------->

we made a detour to the coast around 4pm or so and visited the lovely town of santa cruz. which was full of hippies and carnival rides and we loved every minute of it. the rides were shut down yesterday, but that didn't keep us from sticking our tootsies in the ocean currents, and my were they freezing! i can't be positive but they simply must have filmed the lost boys on the boardwalk there. it just looked to gaw darned similar i tell ya. really wish the haunted house had been open, it looked rad as all get out. We zipped to a restaurant and got more mexican foods. you'd think we would tire of eating nothing but mexican food for every meal. nor cal really knows what it's doing mmmhmmm. after feasting on shrimpies we drove quick as lightening back to san jose while rocking out to disintegration. we were on cloud nine. then we reached san jose.

ahh san jose, what would i like to say about you... we played this place called johnny v's with the worst sound guy ever. it was a massacre. so we left promptly. the bartender was nice though at least there was that. then the dags got pulled over and ticketed for running a red light about a block from the venue. mmmhmm. yep. we hate san jose.
HOW DO THOSE MAGGOTS TASTE?
WHAT?
YOU'RE EATING MAGGOTS MICHAEL.
don't i know it.

we must off to the airport now and trade in dags for penguins..we will talk again i am sure.

DAY ONE May 2nd
hit the asphalt straight after work. the drive was long and tedious. we hit a batch of insanity round about 1am when a woman on coast to coast am called in complaining of a vortex in her back yard, which inspired a spontaneous blur themed dance party shortly thereafter. We cranked up the bass in our oh so fancy rental vehicle. They promised us minivans and didn't deliver, so hooked us up with a pimped out excursion. All other cars on the road fear us and our secret government black sleek action. We hit the giggles round about 3am and crashed in yreka.the sopranos were on tv and that nerdy italian kid from doogie hauser was dunking this guy's hand in boiling hot soup. not very nice.
Around thereabouts, in true tea cozies style, kelly realized her bag with all her clothes in it was probably left in the safeway parking lot at 15th back home. So whoever the lucky winner may be, we hope you enjoy Kelly's favorite hoody and you better be playing the crap out of that cowbell.

MAY 3rd: Woke up and drove past the majestic mount shasta. weed, the city right below...not so majestic. found some hilarious signs in the burger king though...

finally arrived in San Francisco around 3pm and headed directly to the mission district and took a load off in grassy dolores park. california is sunny and gorgeous with just a slight breeze. it warms our cold seattle souls. there were cinco de mayo festivities, kids rolling down hills and little puppies playing everywhere. Somewhere, something was on fire and the firetrucks kept sirening from every direction. so we watched some hipsters beat up a donkey pinata in a sea of smoke. what else were we gonna do? if you ever want to eat tacos, check out the place at 24th and valencia because dear god they were delicious. and mess filled! might as well have dunked our whole faces in tacos. Soon thereafter we traveled afar to Edinburgh Castle, and realized there was no one to run sound. Eventually someone volunteered, so here's to you volunteer sound guy you served us well, though i forgot your name and apologize! Edinburgh felt like an old pub down below, then there was a pool table and some super stinky bathrooms and then the venue room up top. And really as far as bar music goes that was the most enjoyable mix we've ever heard. we played first, it went pretty well i think, even though tamborines are definitely not as awesome as cowbells and one of the tuning knobs on jeff's bass had broken clean off in the van. He can tune it down, but he can't tune it up. Oh! we debuted our brand new song "Hot Probs," and it got a few hollers afterward so we were pleased as punch. Next up our buds Daguerreotypes played a rockin set, causing many a booty to shake. They've got a brand new album out and you should go have a listen! The three cozie girls and ethan hopped in a cab and flew across town to a dance party, the one thing that makes cozies happy beyond all belief...but this dance party was far superior to the usual dance party this one was sparkly and britpop themed!!! It's named Leisure and run by the same people who run Popscene (another fantastically britpop themed night in S.F.) It only happens once a month and there's britpop kareoke in one room, while the likes of jarvis, morrissey, new order, supergrass, and joy division blast from the other where all manner of fashionistas jump around in a crazed whiskey fueled frenzy.

Ok fine probably not everyone was drinking whiskey we sure as hell were. Would like to send a HUGE thank you to Mir for getting us in and for the lovely drinks! We rushed back to the Castle to pack up our gear and found some crazed sorority girl had fire extingush-ered all our equipment during the last band. So thanks a load kid, now all of our instruments look like they've been in an attic since 1924. I can say that everyone else we met so far in San Fran has been exceptionally nice, and huge props go out to our buds in the chop for all their helpful bay area band knowledge!! yers.

DAY May 4th
Super thanks to Elizabeth and Ben for letting us crash at their respective houses! Kicked of the morning with killer breakfast and indian foods, YERS I can't speak for the breakfast eaters, but the indian food was some of the best I've had in years. even if we thought the restaurant was called "breast of india." that's just not true. detoured to the safeway for kelly so she could own deoderant again. Oh yes, kelly is purchasing a new shirt every day to replenish her luggage, which is now a safeway bag. So if you see us at shows, help a brother out and bring her your unwanted outerwear. The afternoon was lovely, slightly breezy but full of sun! Headed over to a flea market and looked through boxes and boxes of random old photos. most were family photos of little chiddlers and grandmas and such but a few were naughty and my poor little eyes will never be the same. watched a drumcircle for a bit with a cameo performance by a mechanical yipping dog, somehow in time with the music wagging it's tiny tail every which way. those dudes were cool so we gave them some money. we don't give money to no losers see? onward to the stork club our second venue of the trip across the bridge in oakland. the stork club is glorious with weirdo vintage barbie dolls still in their cases, mafia booths , random xmas decor, pool tables and immense amount of pinball machines. and by immense i mean 4. but still! I tried to take on the terminator 2, and we duked it out for a good while, but eventually my step mom stabbed me with her shiny chrome knife arm and i was done for the count. but i'll be back. first up were locals the parents with some dancy ass pop i must say. especially enjoyed their use of hanging keyboards around their necks. not keytars mind you, just mini keyboards. Then Dags were up, and after some technically a jerkass ruined our equipment related difficulties, pulled off a killer set. We got up there, and ripped out Hot Probs again and their was definitely a little dancin going on and some handclappin which is all we can really ask for. we would never ask you to throw things at us for instance if you are enjoying our set. especially not shoes or empty beer bottles. that smarts man! The Hot Toddies were up last and they killed it with their do woppin dirty dance pop tunes. Their were booties shakin in every direction, even enormous dog booties, that ran in during their set? forgot to get a pic of those though..hurumph. we were all pretty hammered at this point full of barbque-ness and beer which the Storks had graciously provided...
If there's one thing Cozies and Dags love to do is dance, and so we did!! For an hour I think. Even the hot dog man danced. well at least i assumed he was the hot dog cooker man because that's what he smelled like. Oh yes oh yes oh yes we stayed with erin from the toddies who has probably the nicest house i've seen in a while with brilliantly fun paintings everywhere and a ghost! yes on the stairs. i didn't see it though. We partied well into the night, jamming out on pianos and guitars and such, the great thing about oakland is you can drive four blocks at 1 am on Monday morning and get delicious delicious tacos while blasting hey ya and singing at the top of your lungs. and dear god were they tasty! Oakland has been very very good to us, and we shall be sad to leave it. Thanks again erin and ryan for letting us crash at yer house and use your internet (obv.) we'll have more updates soon!

Band of the Month: Tea Cozies

The Seattle quartet makes ’gargadelic janglepop’

IN A NUTSHELL
The humble beginnings of the Tea Cozies began when Jessi Reed and Brady Harvey met in 1999 while attending high school in Fort Collins, Colorado. Even though they ended up at different colleges (Reed at Colorado University and Harvey at the University of Northern Colorado), the girls still found time to meet up and jam to Elastica songs. They went through a slew of drummers before finding former high school classmate and drummer Kelly Viergutz, courtesy of a want ad at a local record store. As a trio, they managed to play only one show on New Years Eve 2003 at what was suspected to be a haunted condo. The current lineup only became complete after all three ladies made their way to Seattle. There, they met bassist Jeff Anderson at a party and asked him to join on Halloween, according to Reed, "partially due to his impressive land shark costume."

For those who may be wondering: a tea cozy is a cutely decorated cloth cover for teapots that helps keep tea warm, more often seen in the U.K. So the choice to name themselves "tea cozies" actually aligns well with the band’s Brit-based sound but mostly stems from their desire to call themselves something that would most likely appeal to "knitters and British grandmothers." And much like their namesake, the band is to the indie scene what tea cozies are in the U.S.: obscure and unknown, yet still appreciated by a chosen few. "You’d be surprised how many people don’t know what tea cozies are," Viergutz says. "Our bass player still doesn’t."

The band calls its sound "gargadelic janglepop," which involves sampling well-known genres and mixing the sounds into something new. The band’s primary influences are David Bowie, Justine Frishmann, Ray Davies, Michel Gondry, Prince, the Beatles, Morrissey, and Kim Deal, all chosen not only for their musical prowess but also due the band’s personal belief that they’re all "aliens."

Songs like "Loxo" and "Stir the Cup," from their 2006 self-titled EP, are a testament to their sound: catchy guitar jams mixed with upbeat pop that you can shimmy and shake to while the girls wail and croon. Others like "Tranciting" stick to the same beat, only with a noticeably grittier, underground sound. One of their newer singles, "Pretty Pages" is comprised of jingly sounds (including a tambourine) played along with fast-paced pop.

With their fun, danceable beats, you would think the Tea Cozies are all about energy at their shows. And they are — if there’s enough room. Harvey reminisces about one show in which the band was packed into the corner of a small café. There was so little space that if they moved around, they would hit each other with instruments or accidentally turn off their power strip and unplug half of their equipment. "It was ridiculous," Harvey says. "Then a drunk woman took off her shirt and danced in a swimming suit for the rest of our set; it made us feel better."

Lyric writing is mainly left in the hands of Reed and Harvey, who also share vocal duties. Reed is known for translating her lyrics into various languages and back to English through Babelfish. Harvey likes to mix together phrases and double meanings until they become long chains of words. On top, they’ll throw in fun words to shout and melodic chants. Other songs are the products of jam sessions played repetitively to the point where it’s either permanently stuck in their heads or something they never want to hear again. "We all have little handheld recording devices at our side during practice," Reed says. "When we play something really bitchin’, we’ll each record it. We have tapes and tapes of those. It’s like an archive of thoughts and silliness."

GOALS
The band will tour the West Coast in May 2008 and will be joined with fellow Seattleites Daguerreotypes and the Little Penguins. Tea Cozies are working on songs for a new album and says its mission statement is to "keep making music until the apocalypse hits."

Tea Cozies

The amount of great Seattle bands, which can at least peripherally be considered power pop, never ceases to amaze me. It seems like I discover a new favorite just about every week. This week it's Tea Cozies who play smart, quirky, rhythmic, punk spiked pop that reminds me of Elastica (one of my favorite bands of the '90s), Deerhoof and Blonde Redhead.

They have a new single Pretty Pages/Réglons, the former ostensibly about libraries and the latter about love. You can hear both sides over at Tea Cozies'
MySpace page along with some great songs from their self-titled EP.

I haven't seen them live yet but by all accounts they put on an energetic, rocking show. They'll be playing the Comet Thursday night with a few other bands that have a similar sound that I've also just discovered but think I really like: Danielli, Kiss Her For the Kid and Daguerreotypes.
