Been doing freeform digital painting using painter. At work I paint line art of backgrounds. Here I'm sketching and getting rid of the lines all together, moving toward painting. Actually at this point, it's already fucking painting. I'm painting. There. Finally!

Times are tough...

So, at night I stop being an animator and transform into... the FLATTER. Who is this mysterious FLATTER? We'll it's me, of course. What are his super powers? It has to do with color and photoshop. And I have a mighty LASSO and MAGIC WAND, and an iMac.

Like Wonder Woman if she was a wizard switched from PC.

Actually, my lasso and wand are not magic and they aren't even real. I'm talking about the tools in Photoshop CS4. Basically I get the line art for a comic book or newspaper at 400 dpi, and I paint the major colors underneath in various shades. It makes the area selections of the image easy. Then I send it off to the publisher/editor/colorist to get painted en full.

This has been a cool source of extra income, getting a few pages done a day for different books. I've been charging 5 bucks a page and I'm fast, about 2 pages an hour on average, 10 bucks an hr basically it amounts to. Don't know if I'm shortchanging myself because I don't know anyone who does this aside form me.

I started doing this for a BUNCH of stories for the HERO INITIATIVE anthology book which got EXTREMELY backed up with the production schedules. Now I'm working on some regular publications from the people I met while working on that.

Some flats from last month:

In other news, I got a job teaching animation at a college. Also, the new Terminator movie looks cool.

I promise to be on myspace more. Damn, facebook dominate me.
