Hey, folks!
Just a small note: we're busy writing new material for our next recording sessions, which will (hopefully) complete this new record. The songs so far are AWESOME - if there's one thing I've always enjoyed about being in Juniper Lane, it's the growth that we have from album to album. John has become a fully integral and wonderful part of our writing and recording process, and I can't thank him enough for choosing to join us in this endeavor. (I also like John being in the band 'cause I can say shit like "anamorphic" and he'll know EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN.) We'll be back in 2010 with more shows and a new record, so please be patient.
In the meantime, I'm gonna post what I think are, in my estimation, ten of the finest records released from 2000 to 2009. Why these? These are the ones that I enjoyed the most. From front to back, track to track, these are the albums that either get spun in my CD player or on my mp3 player the most. For inspiration, for fun, for something that puts me either in a good mood or a shitty mood, depending on what I want to be… There were “great albums” that I was told to listen to, but they just didn’t move me as much as these following albums did. And that is why you may not see Wilco’s “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” or Radiohead’s “Amnesiac” or other such "brilliant records" on here. I’m not trying to be hip; I’m not trying to be cool. These are just the albums that moved me in one extreme or another, and I’m very happy with this selection.
My Top Ten Albums of the Decade
1) Travis “The Invisible Band” – what’s not to love about this record? This is a must-have – if you don’t have this in your collections, shame on you. Go out and get it immediately. Standout tracks: well, all of them. 2) Green Day “American Idiot” – proof that a band can evolve and make one of the greatest records of all time. Provocative and heartfelt, Green Day takes you on an odyssey through one’s own self and back again… marvelous stuff. Standout tracks: “Jesus of Suburbia”, “Homecoming”, “Letterbomb”, “Give Me Novacaine”, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” 3) Coldplay “X&Y” – it was tough deciding between this and “A Rush of Blood to the Head”. However, it came down to the fact that I love EVERY song on “X&Y”, and I have to skip maybe a few on “Rush”. But also, because “Fix You” (my favorite song of all time) is on here, this one gets the edge. Standout tracks: “Fix You”, “Swallowed in the Sea”, “White Shadows”, “The Hardest Part”, “How You See The World” (available on the Japanese edition) 4) The Flaming Lips “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” – we were recording “Sirens From A Mile Back” in Blacksburg, VA when we heard this in 2002. Our producer played it for us over the studio loudspeakers, and we enjoyed it immensely. Went out and bought it the very next day. This is their “OK Computer” – a redefining of purpose and self, and it’s even better in 5.1 Dolby Digital. Pick that up, if you have the chance. Standout tracks: “Fight Test”, “Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell”, “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1”, “Are You A Hypnotist??” 5) Pete Yorn “musicforthemorningafter” – this album was very influential on me as a drummer. Instantly memorable and not easily forgotten. Standout tracks: “Life on a Chain”, “Sense”, “Strange Condition”, “Murray”, “Sense”, “Lose You” 6) Interpol “Turn On Your Bright Lights” – we heard this the same week we heard “Yoshimi” for the first time. Dark, driving, and insanely great. Standout tracks: “NYC”, “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down”, “Obstacle 1”, “PDA” 7) Death Cab For Cutie “Plans” – from back to front, this is one of the most imaginative albums from one of the greatest writers in our generation. It’s hard to come up with standout tracks on this one, because Ben Gibbard and company make every song as unique as the last. But here’s what I think: “Marching Bands of Manhattan”, “Crooked Teeth”, “Soul Meets Body”, “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”, “Different Names For the Same Thing”, “Summer Skin”… and, quite frankly, the whole damn thing! 8) Beastie Boys “To The 5 Boroughs” – I love this album. There’s something present on this album that’s not in a lot of hip-hop these days – proper MCing. True, with the political bent of it, it may turn some people off, but I still have so much fun with this record. Standout tracks: “Triple Trouble”, “Right Right Now Now”, “Crawlspace”, “Hey Fuck You”, “That’s It That’s All” 9) Ben Folds “Rockin’ the Suburbs” – Ben Folds’ first solo album says it all about a lot of things – love, loss, and Prozac Nation. Seriously, at once, the most darkly comic, energetic and earnest albums of our time. Standout tracks: “Fred Jones, Part 2”, “Fired”, “The Luckiest”, “Zak and Sara”, “Still Fighting It”, “Not The Same” 10) Jimmy Eat World “Bleed American” – from 2001 through the present, not a month goes by that I don’t listen to this CD. Some of their best work is on this record, “The Middle” notwithstanding. Standout tracks: “Hear You Me”, “A Praise Chorus”, “Cautioners”, “If You Don’t, Don’t”, “Sweetness”, "My Sundown"
Honorable Mention: Eminem “The Marshall Mathers LP” – I know, you’re like, “WTF?” And I say: what an album. Hilarious, scary, thought-provoking, maddening, vile and defiant, this was a swift middle-finger to the establishment that was a marked improvement over “The Slim Shady LP”. This is art of a different form, and I’ve had a lot of good times with this record. Standout tracks: “Bitch Please II”, “Who Knew”, “Marshall Mathers”, “Criminal”, “Kill You”
So there you have it. The ten albums of the last ten years that meant the most to me. A little more mainstream than most, but for better or worse, these are some seriously great records. Enjoy them at your own risk and pleasure.
Love, Eddie
p.s. See you at Whitlow's tonight!

Our song "Catch My Breath" is currently a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition, in the AAA (adult album alternative) category. It's now in the final round and will be judged by panelists including Robert Smith from The Cure, Neil Finn from Crowded House and Black Francis from The Pixies - pretty cool!

Current mood: excited
We just finished mixing four of our new songs at Quad Studios in NYC (right in Times Square) with Michael Brauer, whose work we really admire. He's mixed records for some of our favorite artists, including Coldplay, Doves, Travis and Athlete.
Brauer is fresh off yet another Grammy win, this time for his efforts on Viva la Vida. He also mixed The Fray's latest album, which is #1 on the Billboard charts.
Needless to say, it was an amazing experience and we can't wait for you to hear the new tunes - we think they're our best to date.

We hope you are all having a Happy Thanksgiving! Don't forget to come see us and our friends Against Grace and Zelos this Saturday, November 29th, at IOTA in Arlington, VA. The Washington Post selected the show as one of their weekend picks, and here's what they had to say: "With an opening spot for Coldplay and a soundtrack highlight on ESPN, the local up-and-comers have proven they fit on a big stage -- all the more reason to catch them on a more intimate stage now." Speaking of the Washington Post, they also will publish a review of Wake From Yourself in tomorrow's paper. It's also posted online in their electronic edition. The full review will be on page 7 of the Weekend section, so be sure to keep an eye out! See you Saturday!

Current mood:blown away
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008.
We started loading stuff onto a cargo van around 1:30 pm or so. Everyone was in high spirits, and I think the reality of everything fully hit during packing. Rehearsals were one thing – actually packing up the van was a huge indicator of YES, THIS IS HAPPENING. We got to the Verizon Center around 3 and were escorted to our dressing room. It was everything like you see in band documentaries – stalls with cubbies and a hanging rack lining the walls; a refrigerated case where we put our two cases of water; a curtained-off bathroom and shower area; and eventually, pretzels. The refrigerator was a Coca-Cola case with the sliding glass doors, the kind you see in gas stations and behind food stands at arenas and sporting events.
Let me give you a general idea of where we were: we were in a room at one end of a long hallway running the length of the Verizon Center. At the other end was Coldplay's side. They had a ping-pong table set up in the middle of the hallway down at their end, and they had several dressing and family rooms. We didn't see them soundcheck, and we didn't see them when we came in.
Around 5 pm, we started putting our stuff together; as we were doing so, we got called up to do our soundcheck. This was around maybe 5:20 or 5:30 or so.
Walking onto the stage, past Will Champion's drums and percussion instruments (a timpani, bell and field bass drum, all used on the song "Viva La Vida"), I could scarcely contain my excitement. We set our stuff up, got mics placed, started line-checking (making sure that a signal is going from the mic to the mixing desk) and getting monitor levels set. It was probably about maybe 6:00 by the time we got offstage, after soundchecking with "Catch My Breath".
We went back to the dressing room, where we hung out for a little while until Coldplay's drummer, Will Champion, came to visit. We had brought some stuff to get signed, hopefully – five vinyl editions of "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" and ten posters that were specially made just for us – and Will graciously signed every one of them. He took some pictures with us and talked for a while, and then he had to leave. That was really nice of him to do all that, you know? Shortly after that, we headed towards the stage entrance and started focusing on what we had to do for the next 25 minutes.
7:30.
Go time.
The backstage manager got onto his radio and signaled the light operator.
"And we have a go on the house lights."
The house lights went dark and a cheer erupted from the crowd. Exhilarating, I tell ya. The audience was excellent – I felt like we got a fantastic response. As each song progressed, I just felt extremely happy and light-hearted. We were all having the time of our lives onstage.
Our set list: Take Me Home
Catch My Breath
Now That I've Started
Backwards
Impact
Coma
And as the last note of "Coma" rang out, we got offstage, waving to the audience on the way. We had to take our equipment off the stage with the help of roadies, but hell, it was just… awe-inspiring.
We got our stuff packed away, and we went back to the dressing room. There was a tub with four bottles of champagne on ice, with five champagne flutes, accompanied by a handwritten note from Coldplay, which read: "Hi guys – Thank you so much for playing with us today – Love, Coldplay", surrounded by all their signatures. Close to the start of Coldplay's set, I found some of my band members around the ping-pong table near Coldplay's dressing room. On the table were all the posters and records that we'd asked them to sign, which they all had. After collecting them, we proceeded to watch the concert.
Folks, let me tell you – Coldplay was AMAZING. All the energy, all the excitement… they're just awesome. Favorite moments? "In My Place", "Fix You", "Lovers in Japan", "Lost!", and "The Hardest Part", where Chris Martin played half of the song by himself on the piano before stopping and saying, "Well, that's enough of that." The new spins that they put on certain songs – the electro version of "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face", the acoustic set that was played up on the second level – made the night more than memorable.
After Coldplay's set, we went and handed out postcards on the street, after which we packed up our dressing room and left. We took the call sheet (the piece of paper that lists everything hour-by-hour – setup, rigging, soundcheck, dinner, set times and pack-out) off the wall as a memento, and after doing an idiot check, we left and put stuff in our cars. We had drinks and a late dinner at Clyde's next door, where we all just sat and talked down the night. Each person had different "favorite moments" of the night – be sure and ask them about it.
And so went the night.
To Shaleigh, Ted, Eric, Jenn F., Leanne, Nate, Ashley, Tom, Meg and Jenn C. – thank you so much for all the support onstage and offstage and in our daily lives – and thanks for helping us load our stuff on or off the van. Jenn, thanks for hooking us up with Emre – he and his crew deserve a big thank you from us.
If anyone from Coldplay is reading this, thank you so much for the opportunity. It was an honor.
To Chris, Freddy, John and Viv – I couldn't have asked for a better day. Thank you.
And finally – to the fans that voted so that we got here – thank you all.
