OK, so you're talking to these Rehab people, but who does what?

Donna - [SisterCrow on the friends list] - you'll meet me at the gigs. I put this project together, originally with someone else who is no longer involved, but its my baby and I care deeply about how your "Rehab Experience" goes. I'm the gob of the outfit, if you like.

Currently I do the sound desk - yes I'm looking for a replacement on that duty...help? lol. I also manage this profile, and sometimes beg bands to come and play for me >:-)

Jacko - [JACKO on the friends list - funny enough] - Jacko is currently arranging the gig bookings for me. He's the lucky bloke who deals with all the stress of getting confirmations, arranging equipment and sorting out line-ups etc. I like Jacko's style, he's a musician himself and takes no nonsense from anyone. Not that we get any nonsense from ANYONE here ;)

Jacko is also the man responsible for those fantastic flyers!!

Lyndsey - [midian101photography on the friend list] - is the mad burd with the camera who'll be snapping you as you strut your funky stuff onstage for us!!

Lynds also doubles as sometime barstaff and taker of door money.

Pete - [refuses to use myspace/facebook/any other form of social networking site, lol] - Pete is my son, and is also the fella taking the money on the door.

Pete comes out from behind the "door" to get up and have a dance to bands he particularly enjoys. (Once all the money has been taken and is safely secured of course!). He is our trouble-shooter and, once he's got his license, will also be my unofficial door person.

ok its easier for bands to add names here for gigs for next year

were looking to do punk every 2nd and 4th week of the month and metal 1st and 3rd of the month so its more managable

right so before you get your names down heres what we expect from bands and the main one is if you dont have the gear to play ie guitar and bass amps dont put your name down

Ok this as a cut and paste so sometimes it's going to feel cold

So sorry for that but I was fed up with typing stuff out week after week same old shit

So here's a fool proof guide of what people will need, and a faq in types

There have been some problems in the last month or so of what people have been turning up with

Claiming not to have had the same mail as everyone else etc

So here's the only mail I'm going to send from now on so it's the same for everyone

1)      Headlining band will be bringing a drum kit

2)      Supporting bands drum breakables (and showing much respect to the headliners kit)

3)      What are drum breakables, stool,  cymbals', snare drum, sticks, pedal, clutch, stands,  and anything else you think you might need

4)      All bands bring guitar cabs and heads all bands bring bass cab and head not just show up with heads unless organised with other bands first

5)      If you haven't got the gear to play you will have to organise it yourself before the gig don't just show up expecting to borrow you may get sent home

6)      PROMOTION if you don't promote your gig don't leave it up to us thinking were going to get you the best crowd you ever had. We don't know who your fans are you will find fliers in the rehab pics section

7)      So if you cannot be bothered to promote we won't be bothered to book you it's a 50/50 split

8)      If you don't believe in your product why should we

9)      We will be checking to see if your bothered to promote as we will be spying on your MySpace and friends   as if each band brings 12 people we have a cracking night it's that simple

10)   Payment if there's people in the room bands get paid but can't say how much as depends on how many people turn up that's why promotion is so important no people no money

Now then still with us and want to play sorry for the rant but bands are getting lazy now days and it has to stop

gigs are 8pm start unless stated so please turn up 6 to 6:30 how to get to the sporran is in a blog on the rehab page

If you're using drum mc or anything weird and wonderful bring the leads and adapters it needs to run it

Main thing have fun

Love and hugs from the rehab team

I couldn't find a better map than the one here:

The Swinging Sporran - Pub's Galore

Isn't insertable or it'd be on the profile..that link will give you a decent map and full route directions

The Swinging Sporran, for our older viewers, was formerly known as "The Cabin", "The Priory" and "B3".

For route planning purposes, the postcode is B4 7LL.

The venue is on the corner at Priory Queensway, opposite The Square Peg (kinda), Tesco Express and Forbidden Planet...a short walk up from Argos. If you get to that awful Tony Hancock metal bust thing, the pub is just a short walk across the road.

If you're driving then you can get a decent route planner from google maps:
Google map to the Sporran

Parking is via prior arrangement with the pub, as you'll be using the underground car park, shared with the Academy. This parking is STRICTLY for bands only - not for general use - unless you've got permission, the security staff won't let you in.

Easy to get to than to explain, lol.

A huge number of buses stop right outside - using the Travel West Midlands coding, these stops are PG, PH, PJ, PK, PL, PM, Bus Mall - google has those stops listed on their maps or alternatively, have a look at the city centre map from Network West Midlands.

The venue is also within a few minutes walk of New Street, Snowhill and Moor Street rail stations.

FEB 16th
Well, we had an awesome Anti-Valentine's Day Massacre in terms of the bands on the line-up. It would have been nice to have more people show, but such is life.
The Abortions (Mid-Wales) opened for us, and gave us some of the best raw, hard, fast, dirty punk , just the way I like it!!! They'll be coming back SOON! Lovely, lovely lads! (should I say that about punks? It'll ruin their cred no end >:-PP)

Brum's own The Fortunate were next up next, and played a blinder, despite their drummer (and my rehab righ-hand) Jay having cracked ribs. Liz is looking so much more comfortable behind her bass, and Karl is really settling in as a singer. They're truly looking forward to their stint on the Stockport Spit n Sawdust 3-dayer (April 11-13..tickets £10, if u want a lift, I may have room in a hired minibus!!) Looking forward to meeting Fungalpunk Dave then too!!

Local lads Dirty Mindz came on to blow the room away. What a surprise - they hovered around looking very young and sweet - THEN they hit the stage!! This was their first gig in front of an adult audience as such, and they were quite nervous, but we couldn't help but warm to them as they gave us a totally professional, tight, well-polished lesson in how young people used to AND STILL CAN make punk music from the heart and brain. I can only repeat myself - a truly tight performance. BOOK EM if you get the chance!

F.T.R. (First Time Riot) delivered us some cracking punk, with so much raw energy that it may have been their energetic performance which brought on the problems the next band had. I'm looking forward to having FTR back as soon as I can fit em in too. Good guys, awesome sound, and well-worth seeing!!

After coming all the way from Yorkshire Most Likely To Fail bore the brunt of technical difficulties. Initially it looked like the PA had blown through the vocal channels. IF this hadn't happened, MLTF would have shown us the true professional side of punk music - good, hard anthemic punk, played beautifully! As it was, they were totally amazing given the circumstances, and soldiered on through their set. AND they were polite after, which meant the world to me as I felt I had let them down (despite being unable to do anything about what had happened). I have MLTF booked for April and look forward to giving them the venue their performance deserves - a damned fine one!

There was a long, interim pause, which must have been truly annoying for Liverpool/Birmingham punk icons MDM (Mere Dead Men). This was while Dave (the ingenious, multi-skilled manager/soundguy) attempted to jerry-rig the PA in order for MDM to play for us. The band members on the whole were absolutely lovely about the delay, and very professional in the way they dealt with it.
Once they were able to get on stage, MDM gave us a solid, polished performance, and Mandy was as stunning as ever...I know the reason they don't have people dancing is because most of the blokes in the audience are too spellbound watching Mandy to remember to dance! (I've seen this in action - and yes my fella at the time got a few choice words for it >;-)).
MDM interact with their audience - how many other punk gigs are going to give you a Mexican wave, as to include members of The Drongos For Europe, Mangled and GBH? Had to be seen to be believed >:-)))

So, all in all, a great night - which you probably missed, and should be kicking yourself for doing so - marred by slight technical difficulty.

Current mood:  determined

The idea is to bring you nights of "musical unification"; Birmingham is a city of many subcultures, all divided...division makes us weak as a scene - unity makes a good alternative scene strong and lasting. We have the some of the best metal, punk, darkwave, goth, rock, pschobilly/rockabilly bands both upcoming and as part of our musical heritage (Black Sabbath anyone?). We need to take advantage of this. There is also a glut of current music that a lot of people love that just never gets played in our places..attend, to see what I mean about that >:-P

The main point of Rehab is to provide multi - genre gigs that DO NOT clash with others..we will not book a punk gig at The Swinging Sporran  if one is already booked elsewhere THAT WE KNOW OF. The point is to work together to make the scene strong, not to try and tear it apart by being in competition, that way lies weakness.
The idea is to have a general night of good music, amongst friendly, like-minded people of our own kind.

Rehab will be working closely with local bands to get decent, reliable gigs for bands of all sub-genres, and will be looking to you lot to provide support for all events. As "scene" regulars, we have provided our support to many nights and gigs, now we're looking for some payback for our loyalty >:-)

Bands - all I ask is, once you've played the Black Horse, to leave a comment here, even if it's only a couple of lines...to give other bands a "taste" of the venue from YOUR point of view as musicians and what they can expect when they come to play a "Rehab" night.

Just to start you off, here's a couple of leading questions:

1. What did you think of the backline?
2. What did you think of the PA/Sound arrangements?
3. What did you think of the promotion for the gig?
4. How do you feel about the size of the venue?
5. Were we, as promotors, fair with you?
6. Is there anything you think needs improving (within possibility and reason?).

I'd find the feedback really useful, and I think this'd be a great way to let other bands know what to expect.

Many thanks for taking the time.

All the best,

Donna
