It has been a grueling few months!

First of all I know I've been slacking on my intention to list our shows in the blog and give everyone a synopsis of the night. However, to make up for this I'll be listing our shows and try to say something small for each one, as time permits. Therefore, I'll list the shows we've played since Nov. inception below and get cracking on it, & I'll be updating this post as time permits.

In other news, we are currently recording w/ our dear friend Brian Herb, this month. We've been sneaking into Orchestra Hall downtown Minneapolis, guerilla style between the hours of 12AM & 6, and recording in the hall, so as to take advantage of the great acoustics. Brian has a sweet mobile rig, we've been using & the drums sound super sweet! Hopefully we can be done by August. Furthermore, thanks to everyone for their interest in Linnea's artwork, the best way to purchase/commission work is to contact her directly @

http://www.linneamaas.com

not that I don't appreciate the emails, it is just the best way to get a hold of her in a timely fashion, as I am not always the most punctual person.

Thanks so much to the warm embrace of the Minneapolis musical community, the shows we've played since our inception in Nov. have been great & we've been very lucky to share the stage & work w/ some great people/artists.

Cheers,

Winter...

PS
The doc says I should wean my way off crutches by next week, for those off you concerned. I'm looking forward to doing a show on my feet next month.

21+, $5

What can I say, but our friends are brave mofos.  It was colder than a witch's tit tonight.  I was mightily impressed w/ the number of brave, brave friends who came all the way to St. Paul in f***ing sub-zero weather.  Lindsy, Allie, Matt, Anna, Fred, Ben, Jamie, Alex, Taylor, Adam, Claire, Rachel, Tom, Loni & David, & whomever else I might have forgotten, you're all nuts!  Anyway, it has been almost 5 years since I've been in this room, not since Rye Coalition & I wasn't sure what I was in for. The strange thing to me about this room, was the fact that for such a small sound system, the stage sound was amazing.  I could hear everything really, really well!  We played the Triple Rock in early Dec. & you would expect a sound system like that (which probably cost them 5 times what Big V's did) would have a great monitor system, but I heard the violin & myself sooo much better than @ the Triple Rock.  Wow!   Also, what was sort of funny, was the fact that the stage was literally like a trampoline.  Every time I walked towards the middle, it bowed in.  I thought I was going to literally break through into some dark seamy sub-basement where a man in a mask lived off of rats & stale Grain Belt.  However, after I got used to it, it was really sort of fun.  You could almost time your hopping with the music, and get about a foot of lift, w/out even trying.  Anyway, I had a really good time.  Really liked both the sound man Mike, and the door guy Kevin (who was nice enough to give me a smoke, he told me some cool story about when he was in some old celtic band that used to play w/ The Chieftans alot).  We got to play w/ Ghost in the Water, whom I really dug.  Very soft, pulsing, earnest music.  It would be something I'd love to listen to at home by myself w/ the lights off, and a glass in my hand!  Coltrane Motion, was sort of spastic keyboard rock, they had a great stage presence and seemed to be having a good time.  It was too bad that not many people, got to see them.  Sadly, the room cleared out pretty early.  So not many people checked them out.........anyway, Adam, Ben, & I finished out the night w/ shots of Jameson & making googly eyes at this girl who was very drunk and was doing this really, really, weird hula hoop/break dance thing, while facing the corner.  I don't know where her friends were, but I hope she made it home in one piece.

Cheers,

Winter...

Friday, Dec. 21st:  La Crosse, WI @ JB's Speakeasy

w/ This Machine, Czarbles

Show Starts @ 10PM Sharp!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Wow, Wow!  What can I say?  I wasn't sure what to expect for the smaller college town of La Crosse, WI as it has been years since I've played in the town.  However, the people delivered, we arrived about an hour before show time and didn't have time to get a bite to eat.  But, it didn't matter, the owner of the establishment gave us great hospitality!  I drank Jameson throughout the night instead of eating.  Thank Vishnu, we went on before midnight, as I was unable to stand by then, let alone play.  We had played with This Machine in Mpls, and they had invited us down to La X to play w/ them, wow they had one hell of a draw in this town.  Although the bar was small, (probably only held about 150+) the room was so packed it literally took 10-15 min to work your way from the bar to the stage.  The crowd was very receptive to our music, although I felt bad as we had limited merch, we were asked for more than we had!  (none that night, so sad)  Anyway, This Machine is a soulful indie rock band, which reminds me of Up Records era,  Built to Spill, very catchy melodies.  However, the really pleasant surprise of the night was Czarbles.  Being from Madison, I was surprised at the amount of fans they had.  Czarbles was an instrumental 3 piece, full of noise/prog goodness!  Dear Shiva, the drummer was  brilliant.  Anyway, great night overall.  I look forward to playing w/ both of these bands in the future......and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the quality of the young ladies in this college town.  I guess I just expected large corn fed Sconi women.   I briefly spoke w/ an uber attractive brunette who I had met @ the 400 bar in MPLS, sadly I didn't get her name tonite.  However it twas probably for the best, as I was super/sweaty/drunk after playing!

Cheers,

Winter...

Saturday, Dec. 15th:  Minneapolis, MN @ Hexagon Bar

w/ Meg Ashling, Sunspot, The Parlour Suite, Western Fifth

Show Starts @ 10PM

We go on last, bout' 12:30-1AM

Free Show!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I spent the night, running back and forth playing taxi for friends, as well as getting a few missing drum parts.  So I caught all of Ms. Meg Ashling's set and most of Sunspot, hopefully John will fill in the rest of the night, as I feel I can't do justice to Parlour Suite & The Western Fifth, as I caught only a few songs each.  First off, this is our 2nd time, @ the Hex.  they have this great eccentric older woman running the back bar.  She reminds me of the way, I like my tofu (gentle yet firm).  She seems like a hard-ass, bout' the rules and getting people out after close, BUT she would slip me a free drink throughout the night.... anyway, we love, LOVE the sound guy Alex, this place has a smaller sound system compared to some of the other places we've been playing but he is great.  We put mic. on the violin this time, I think made things sound much better.  Meg Ashling's voice was haunting reminded me of some of the old scratchy Jazz Records my grandfather would play!  My friends Matt, and Jason were very smitten by her appearance also, which obviously didn't hurt the attention her music was getting.  After, her set a 3-piece from Madison called Sunspot was up, I'm sort of sad I didn't catch the whole set, but I was tapping & nodding my head to the 2/3 I did catch.  It was catchy eclectic rock.  The thing that stood out bout' them, to me was the fluid drums/bass and the lyrics.  Any band who makes references to "fucking his pc, my PS3 and wii" brings out the sheer delight of my inner geek!  Hopefully, John will post something bout the other 2, but I must say was impressed w/ what I heard.  Twas, good to see Jason/matt/Madam Adam/Allie, thanks for sticking round, as we went on bout 1:20AM.  Brian, Madam Adam, and I closed the night out @ Alex's apt, w/ Dulono's pickle pizza, cheap beer, smoke, his roomate, two crazed cats, an even crazier dog, a view of America from a Romanian & Brian's in depth knowledge of pharmacology as well as the dispensing of free samples.

Cheers,

Winter...

Thanks for the post Winter..., and shall I add my own descriptions  for what I heard?  I think I might.  I don't blog very often. can you tell? yes. OK.  My keyboard has a broken backspace key so I can't delete anything.  The Parlor Suite played a set that sounded like Judy garland x 2 transported back to circa 1920 singing along with Joplin on piano.  Very cool, I enjoyed it much.  The other acts were very enjoyable as well - the western fifth with their swingin poppy blues-western songs, which got more people dancing, Sunspot, with their perfectly executed and coordinated songs (they were really tight), and Meg Ashling, with her sweet voice and harmonica.  Ahhh.  Our cello player didn't show up again, so I think I will fire him. or her.  Its name is "pinky", and I did not realize that we had a cellist before derek told me that Pinky didn't show up.  Anyone know a good cellist/dulcimer/skorg player? Didn't think so.
