Current mood: cold
The one sheet that came with this sums it up, "modern cross over at it's best." Palehorse play what I consider to be hardcore the way it should be, a little of Integrity and older Hatebreed with the multilayer song structure of early 90's metal core bands like Undertow and One King Down. This kicks you in the face pretty hard, great metallic breakdowns and some guitar noodling to add flavor to the music. There are some beefy breakdowns, but they are garnished with a good amount of melody. Each song starts off in your face, along the lines of Integrities "Humanity is the Devil," you can't help but feel the anger.
Vinny's voice is a little rougher around the edges this time, and I think it compliments the music really well. The bass sound is a little too twangy, but the guitars sound amazing. The drumming is top notch, a lot of double kick and quick snare rolls. Lyrically nothing has changed, a few more "personal" songs, but more conspiracy theory fueled rage.
Palehorse haven't changed much of their formula, a bit more thrash esque guitar parts thrown in, but over all they have stuck with a formula that fits them well. Why fix it if it aint broken?

Connecticut's hardcore heavyweights return with this followup to 2005's Secrets Within Secrets EP. Amongst the Flock boasts a heavier crossover-influenced sound (think Shipwreck and Integrity) with much improved vocals and very solid riffing (which comes as somewhat of a suprise after the death of guitarist John Tamas).
The album opens with a crushing track entitled "St. Louis." Second is the title track, which is probably one of the heaviest. The album unleashes a furious assault through eleven songs, incorporating their dark lyrics about conspiracy, religion, politics, and everything else in between. It also includes a re-recording of probably their most well-known song, "Mayday," which is arguably much better than the original.
I will say this though, the album is not for everyone. If you aren't into the heavier side of hardcore, raspy vocals, or chugging riffs, it's not for you. This band has been lumped in with "tough guy" hardcore before, but it's much more accurate to put them in the class of Integrity and Ringworm.
There are very few flaws with this album; in fact, the only one that comes to mind is the repetitiveness that is often noticed with this style of bands. The songs are all very similar, but not to the point that they are all the same or indistuingishable from each other.
All in all, I'd say this is one of the better records of the year, but that's up to you.

Palehorse — Amongst the Flock Buy it at Amazon
.. Buy it from InSound
While the flocks of metalcore sheeps are busy tweaking their 'neener neeners', Palehorse is busy paving the way for future generations of hardcore hybrids. Dark lyrical content spotlights political disapproval and religion dot "Amongst the Flock" while Palehorse challenges both the moving bodies and the inquisitive mind. Churning metal riffs, dynamic thrashy grooves, and face smashing rhythms are perfectly combined by producer Jim Siegel (Blood For Blood, Death Before Dishonor). Heavy hardcore blitzkriegs that brutally whiplash the scene into shape.

review from punknew...with some great feed back
New England is essentially known all over the country as the mecca for hardcore. Converge, Have Heart, and With Honor are just a few of the multitude of hardcore bands to call the northeast its home at one point or another. Well, add Connecticuts Palehorse to that list, because their brand new EP Secrets Within Secrets is dropping something fierce.
Five tracks is all it takes for Palehorse to quickly establish themselves as a real force to be reckoned with. The spitfire vocals of Vincent Calandra power over the top of the lumbering rhythm section, his extremely commanding presence having strong effect on the music as a whole. The music is relatively standard fare, the songs all hovering between two and three minutes, but its the band as a wholes demeanor that give things an extra kick. After the intro chugs through its duration, Mayday blasts through, all guns blazing. The guitar work is at its quickest, and Calandra sounds positively enraged. The band is at their musical peak here, but the momentum continues throughout the EP, and a lot of the lyrical content is equally impressive;
Cover-ups in a place called Rome, city of gold and holy blood-stained white robes / Corruption fills the halls, a blindfolded public eye / Secrets within secrets, they illuminate the ones behind / Cover-ups in your cities and towns, spit on the cross our nation was found / / The freemasons the one behind, bleeding treason and promoting lies / Secrets within secrets, your leaders are the ones behind. Its not often a band like this strays outside the lyrical themes of brotherhood and vengeance, so this is more than a welcome change. There are varied themes explored on the album, all of which stray away from traditional tough guy fare. The members of this band may keep with the traditional, straightforward sounds of the genre, but they do it in the least cliché, most enjoyable way possible. A straightforward hardcore effort with that little bit extra to offer, New England strikes again.

Friday Octomber 22. Been looking forward to this show more than any other show in a long time. You'd think it's because of the mason temple, but no. It's becuase of the list of fucking awesome bands. Sometimes i don't watch every band at evey show, (i know i should) but tonight it was an absolute pleasure.
The first band was Joe Longbardi's band. He's our drummer. Their band is cool, but I missed them unfortunately, but those kids they roll with are nuts. If any of you NM kids read this, you're a fine legacy. I'm proud.
Recon is a tough ass stompy hardcore band from West Glen Falls New York. We're always chilling with these dudes somewhere, and they're a great band. They keep getting better and better. Alos a great bunch of guys. We play with them all the time and look forward to continue to do so.
Wrench In the Works was the great dramatic surprise for the night. I logged onto myspace this morning, and lo and behold, the Wrench is representing. They were fucking incredible, some sick journey through disturbing states of conciousness and the feeling of being torn apart, limb by limb, your teeth shattering one by one from the vibrations. Really takes you into a zone.
Robots and Empire (the band formerly known as whendreamsdie) then once again stole the show with thier sabbath esque groove-core. That band put out so much energy, the whole room was electrified. The groove was so damn intense, and Brian's vocals, and Gregs bass,. Greg was in Drowning Room, and has been coming to shows in CT for more than ten years. He is an incredible musician, I have always admired everything he has ever done. Jay is also incredible. His energy, and swing, that is they snap in his playing is the real center groove. And I just don't know what to say about Nick's sick guitar riffs. Quite possibly on their way to becoming the Into Another of another generation. Though they shoud play From Out of Nowhere one more time, because that would make my fucking head explode. Either way, they were fucking awesome. One question every one keeps asking, why aren't Robots and Empire signes and on MTV?

Now, if anyone was in on the skinny, they new to expect great things from the brand new band Nerve Gas Tragedy. Nerve Gas Tragedy is four original members of the ORIGINAL ALL OUT WAR. Fucking incredible. Alfonso heard it and said, "It's what All Out War was meant to sound like". ANd it was. The gnarliest crossover shit I've heard in like, i don't even now. Sick scary gutair parts and insance fast fan picking speed metal, done with so much taste you can tell these guys were their when they invented it. They were. And damn Will! Will is our homey from back in the day. And he couldn't be a better front man for Nerve Gas Tragedy. His voice is incredible, unrelenting, and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. This band will do big things.
Then of course, came Pale Horse. We had a lot of fun tonight. It was so great to see so many kids moshing. Probably the best part about being in a band is watching people go nuts when you play. I guess that's one of the reasons why you do it to begin with. So maeny firends came out, it was great. I love being in a band with these guys. I love playing what we play. It was cool. It was a really a tight scene show, I think everyone knew each other, and was pysyched to see a bunch of great bands. Imagine this same show a year from now. Everyone that was there know they saw something special, a whole batch of incredible, energetic, young, talented, and above all else, tasteful, bands.
Migzy (Mike) who booked the show was awesome. He payed all the bands, hooked up Pizza, after show gorge fest, he was just great to work with.Hopefully he'll do some more shows.
Me and Joe tried to go to Shanon's afterwards after everyone in the band (those of us who have jobs and had been up since 7:30 in the morning) crapped out to go home. But we got on the wrong side of the hightway, and didn't realize it untill waterbury. We were so stoned on hash that going back was impossible... now here i am. now i'm not. later... John.
